Tethering Success!!!!!

All I can say is WOW!
I just moved into an old adobe in Tucson AZ and had limited options for internet. Most of them over $30 a month plus fees. I decided to try ATT tethering option after certainly griping about the idea (c'mon why does it matter how I access 3G...phone or laptop! it should be a free option!) going from Unlimited to 2g data transfer etc...
But I gotta tell ya it works incredible! Perhaps I'm under a tower but believe it or not it works almost as fast as my Cox Cable modem in CA! Almost...
A couple things I did that may help other considering this. Make sure you use less than 2g data per month. I was at 384mb so no issue. Also get ATT to run some chacks on your phone. The day before I decided to try tethering I was having issues with dropped calls. I thought it was because I had moved but there was some setting (a routing something...???) and they corrected that. And perhaps most importantly a new sim card was put in the phone.
The only glitch was the typical agent at ATT has NO IDEA how it works! After setting it up and agreeing to all of the details I ask the agent how do I do it and he says: "I don't know....try restarting the phone and call this number if you have trouble...bye" Beyond ridiculous! So be prepared to research how to use it. It's very simple and if you can't find how I will respond here as I could not find directions ANYWHERE!
But it's worth it, it's fast, it's reliable so far.

  • Will aperture auto advance to display each new image when shooting tethered?

I've tethered successfully with the Canon 6D using either Lightroom or Aperture. When using Lightroom, it will automatically load the new image for display on my external monitor. I cannot find a way to have the same result with Aperture and I would much prefer to use Aperture so the images can be imported directly into the Aperture library. Am I missing something or is this not possible? I like to work from the camera, not sitting at the computer.

    Short answer: Yes.
When you initiaite a thethered session, there is a checkbox in the tether HUD that turns auto-advance on or off. The default is on.
If you have tried it and it doesn't work, what are the symptoms?

  • Has anyone successfully tethered a Nikon D7000 with Aperture 3.1?

    Hi,
I have a new Nikon D7000 and tried to tether it to Aperture 3.1. Aperture recognizes it as a D7000, but I can't get an image to display. I'm outputting JPEG right now and can wait until RAW is available, but it would be convenient to tether so I can get immediate feedback on the image while I'm shooting.
Has anyone had success tethering the D7000 with Aperture 3 or is the software not there yet? I'm talking about having the image immediately downloaded to the iMac and automatically displayed after you take each photo, not downloading at the end of the day.
    Thanks

UPdate - the key was opening a new project in Aperture 3. Once I did that, Aperture recognized the D7000 and I could shoot from the camera and have it displayed immediately on the iMac.
It works right out of the box. Yea!!!

I'm trying to tether my iPhone with Ubuntu 8.04 via Bluetooth. How do I resolve this error -- "Couldn't display "obex://[XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX]/". Error host is down. Please select another browser and try again. ??

    Success!
    I used this guide here - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/iphone-tethering-on-ubuntu-9-10-karmic.html.
I enabled the "Network" service in Blueman, selected my iPhone PAN Network Access Profile, enabled DHCP, disconnected from my WiFi access point and VOILA!!! I'm online!!

  • Internet tethering from iphone to ipad

    Hi there
Does anyone know how/tried to access the internet via an ipad that doesn't have 3G by tethering the device to their iphone, in my case a 4G?
I have looked up this issue on a number of forums and there is some suggestion it might be possible.  If you go to Settings General Network then an option to tether might show up.  However from what I have read this may not show up if your provider does not suppport this option.  I am with Tesco and it certainly does not show up.
If you have had success with this tethering I'd pleased be know and equally to know who your provider is.
    Cheers
    Chas

Sorry, my initial response was specifically regarding tethering an iPad to an iPhone. I don't believe you can.
As for tethering in general, your carrier has to explicitly support it on the iPhone and you generally have to pay for a tethering plan.
If you're in the UK, Tesco does not support personal hotspots. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

  • Have you been successful porting your number and keeping unlimited data?

Hi , I am trying to save money by getting rid of my texting plan($20) and having Google Voice as my SMS provider. I want to keep my number so I will port my number to GV. For a 1-time fee of $20. The Problem is that during the process some people lose their UNLIMITED DATA package. I, of course don't want this to happen. I have searched the interwebs and found that this forum had the good information on it.

See post # 3 and # 85 for detailed instructions. I was in the process of doing it but Google Wallet denied my transaction because I needed to verify my account. This process takes 3 days. So I will wait and try again. I would like to know if the rest of the verizon community has been succesful or has regretted doing this.
I feel that this process should work and would like to keep this discussion open so other people can do the same. We all know sms and voice mins are cheap and carriers are just milking money from data plans.
PS. I felt # 85 was really straight forward
Joined the community to thank the OP - and to add in another success story. Before I start my 'experience share', I think its pertinent to mention that I have the Galaxy S4 [Android]
Started the GV Port on Monday at about 3PM. Provided GV with personal details, phone number, billing PIN (you can set one up or change your current PIN on the VZW website after logging on to your account) and my account number (excluded the -00001 after my account number as suggested by other posters on this thread). Google charged me $20 to complete the port.
On Tuesday morning, approximately at about 11AM, I logged into my VZW account and requested a new number (VZW's website states that this process is free if done online). At this time, my GV Port status showed "Number Change Pending". Once the new number was assigned to me by VZW (the number is issued instantly), I had to turn my phone off and wait a few minutes before turning it back on. When I turned my phone back on, it showed that the new number was active (no VZW notifications - just tried a test call from my landline).
Almost 24 Hours down to the minute (so at about 3PM on Tuesday), I got an email from GV stating that my port was complete. On the GV website, I then added in my new number (under Settings>Phones), and set all calls (and texts) to forward to my new number. GV walked me through a couple of programming steps - and confirmed that my GV calls would be forwarded to my new VZW number. Please note that if you want GV to pick up your VM's, then you will need to activate Google voicemail on the GV website (Settings>Phones). Else, VZW voicemail will end up picking up your calls - and a message like "this user has a VM box that has not been set up" will play.
I also opened up the GV app on my phone and changed the settings to "Make all calls through Google Voice". Also, I turned off the 'Messaging' app, and set the GV app as the default app for handling all texts.
As of now, I can make and receive calls via the setup described above. Folks receiving calls from me see my GV number on their displays (so no need to update folks with my new number), and when I receive calls on my GV number, my VZW phone displays the number of the person trying to reach me (so no updating my contacts list). Low priced international calls, desktop-based texting, unlimited storage of texts/VM's/call-logs, here I come!
My texts arent working yet, but GV states that it takes about 3 days before texting becomes active. When it does, I'm hoping that all texts will be routed via the GV app (I'm fairly certain that it will)
    Other things to note:
Banking Apps: Some banking apps that require verification codes to be sent via text might stop working. I just got an email from BOFA this morning asking me to reverify my mobile number. Need to fix this once GV texting becomes active
Messaging: Existing texts on your device cannot be backed up/imported into GV. That said, Google Play has a couple of free apps that backup your entire message archive under a separate label within your Gmail account
Hope this helps someone else out there in taking the plunge. Seems like the process is fairly straightforward unless you decide to skip some steps or if you are impatient and try to change things too quickly (I would really urge you against skipping steps, hurrying things up, etc. GV is completely automated, and getting "support" is almost impossible).
    All the best!"

You won't lose your unlimited data as long as your account stays active and you don't purchase a subsidized phone. I just did this yesterday and it took just a few minutes over 24 hours to port my number over to GV. I still have unlimited data. I pretty much followed the instructions you have above except I waited about 7 hours to get a new number from VZW just to make sure there were no hiccups. VZW says you may get some overages if you change your number immediately as opposed to on the first day of your billing cycle because they prorate your minutes and texts used. Luckily I have unlimited everything so it didn't make a difference for me. I'm planning on going over to T-Mobile. My home is a dead zone for cell phones and I always have a weak signal and sometimes don't get my calls. I figure if I'm going to pay for an unsubsidized phone, I might as well go with a company that has wifi calling and a cheaper unlimited plan. I pay $94/mo before taxes with VZW; I'll only be paying $59.50 with T-Mobile for the same plan with 2.5 GB tethering included. T-Mobile here in LA is pretty good and even if I don't get LTE, I can fall back on their HSPA+ network, which is way better than VZW's crippled 3G network. No regrets porting over. The ONLY way I'll stay with VZW is if they allow me to keep my unlimited data (not going to do Verizon Max) and get a subsidized phone. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW VERIZON?

  • 10.6.2 Breaks iPhone tethering

Firstly: I have legit tethering on Rogers in Canada. No iPhone hacks here. I was using tethering just fine until yesterday but, after installing 10.6.2 last night, tethering no longer works.
When I attempt to tether, both my Mac's Network Preferences and the iPhone register that tethering has been successful as always. However, no connections can be made to the internet. I verified while tethered that the phone itself was able to load data over the 3G network, so it was not a network problem.
I tried tethering over Bluetooth and USB, both with the same failed result. Anyone else having this problem or have a solution?

I fixed it, had to delete the Bluetooth PAN network, the iphone profile on the Mac and the Mac profile on the iPhone, re-pair, then manually create the Bluetooth PAN network. Have no idea why this worked, but, interestingly, it did not ask me what I wanted to use the phone for anymore under 10.6.2, I recall last time it asked if I want to set the phone up as a network device.

  • Bluetooth tethering no longer working - iPhone 3GS (iOS4.1) and Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I don't understand why this is not working anymore. In the past I had successfully paired & used a bluetooth tethered connection between my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6.4) & my iPhone 3GS (pre 4.1). The network connection was working and I was able to surf the web/use MSN etc. This is not a feature I have used in quite some time and for some reason now it is not working. I have done several upgrades on my phone since I last used it, currently on iOS 4.1.
Lets pretend I am starting from scratch and my Macbook & iPhone do not know each other, devices have been forgotten on both.
    - iPhone & Macbook both are on & discoverable
    - On Macbook Pro I select "Set Up Bluetooth Device"
    - Macbook scans and detects my iPhone, I select "Continue"
    - Macbook connects with iPhone & displays 6 digit pin, also pairing notification is shown on iPhone with the same 6 digit pin
    - I select "Continue" on Macbook & "Pair" on iPhone
    - Connection is made, iPhone is now listed on Macbook and vice versa
    - From bluetooth menu (on Macbook) in the iPhone device menu I select "Connect to Network". Error is displayed on Macbook "The bluetooth network is unavailable. There was a problem connecting to your device..." & on my iPhone an error "Connection Unsuccessful. Make sure iPhone is turned on and in range".
    - When I try to connect from the iPhone an error is displayed "Connection Unsuccessful. iPhone is not supported" with a button to Forget Device.
    What... the ****?
This has worked in the past without a hitch. Has something changed between say iOS 3.x and 4.1 that might cause this to no longer work for me.
    Any protips are greatly appreciated!

Don't feel like a noob, my settings changed after the last update without warning and I was having the same issue as you until I found your post that alerted me to the fact that my internet tethering might be off!
So for others out there that are having this issue to turn tethering on go to Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering > On
Thank you!! I had already wasted over an hour repeatedly syncing and unsyncing my darn bluetooth connection.

  • Trouble tethering my Canon 1Ds mk II with Lightroom 4.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8.

I had to get a Mac just to be able to use tethered shooting with my brand new 1Ds mk III (yes, brand new after 8 years not being used by it's previous owner, had 200 exposures on it)
Windows XP was not an option and Canon support told me that they never had any intentions towards supporting the Camera on Win Vista or Win 7 (even though these OSs were released when the camera was still the top end of their product line on the market!)
Long story short, I researched compatibility for Lightroom and found out, that 4.1 would be the last to support the 1Ds mk II. (Can somebody confirm that?!)
I bought LR 4 last year and am waiting for LR6 with my Win machine, so I installed LR 4 on the mac and denied any updates to be able to use my Camera..
The mac runs OSX 10.6.8, which is, to my knowledge, the last version to support the 1Ds mk II and it's EOS utility, etc. (How about that one?)
Sure, I should've bought the 1Ds mk III, considering all the money I invested just to be able to properly use the 1Ds mk II.. but that's not the issue here and if I should happen to have any success with my work, I will upgrade to a used 1Dx in a few years.
    To my problem at hand:
I installed LR4.1 on my mac and set up tethered shooting with the Camera connected to the mac. (It works fine with EOS utility too)
Camera with its settings is recognized by the tool and can be set off remotely.
Pictures are displayed and develop preset is applied.
However, sometimes it works just fine but then the camera stops taking pictures (Exposure is made, with AF, Shutter, etc. working fine, but pictures aren't saved to CF card nor transferred to Lightroom) Also, sometimes the camera isn't recognized anymore.. This happened repeatedly within 10 to 20 exposures, so not a rare issue here!
When I turn the camera off and back on, it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't work again..
same goes for the firewire cable that sometimes does and sometimes doesn't reset the tool when I unplug it.
I also sometimes noticed the CF-card LED continuously indicating whatever.. had to remove the CF card to stop it from doing that.
    In short:
What could be the problem with my setup and is there an easy way around that?
I really depend on this feature working properly.
    Your help is really appreciated
    Mischa

My camera is a 1Ds mk II..
and for that one it says
All versions tested. All versions tested. Supported only through Lightroom 4.1.
    however, it also says
Windows XP, Vista, 7; Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6
which is plain wrong, because Canon never supported any drivers for Windows Vista or Win 7, not to speak of XP 64bit. (You cannot connect the camera via firewire, without the device drivers!)

  • Windows 8 and LR tethering issue with D7000

I just purchased a new Lenovo W20 laptop with Windows 8 pro, installed LR and PS6. All of this is up to date on patches.
I tried to tether my Nikon D7000 to a USB 2.0 and USB 3 port and have the same issue...
LR sees the D7000 and lists it in the tethering bar and sees the settings for aparture, ISO, and shutter speed. Problem is it will not import and show the files from the camera when I shoot, nor will it trigger the camera with the LR tethering button.
I have successfully shot with this camera when tetered to another laptop using windows 7 and the same LR current version.
Do I likely have a LR or Nikon driver issue, or is there some basic compatability issue with Winodws 8 that is yet to be worked out?
When I use explorer, i can see the files on the D7000 and the thumbnails show up fine in explorer.
    Leroy

Are they using the built in reader in Windows 8 or is it opening in Adobe Reader?
I've noticed the built in reader app doesn't close files unless you close out of the application. So, you wouldn't be able to delete them until you close them.

  • Fujifilm Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

    Hi!
Today Fujifilm shared "Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®". And they shared only 1 exe file, which i can't open on my Mac=). I try open it on PC, but it can't open without HS-V5 ( i needn't it, because it work only on Windows)
    They write:
    To use "Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®" you need to purchase "Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 5".
*For customers who don't have the HS-V5, "FUJIFILM Tether Shooting Plug-in" will be able to be purchased at Adobe Exchange site."
So...i already purchased Adobe CC for photographers. I try find it in Adobe Exchange, but doesn't find it.
    May be somebody know anything?
Or may be somebody knows about tethering future with fujifilm X-T1 in new Lightroom 6?

The current situation seems to be this:
You are licensed to use the plug-in on a Mac or a Windows PC if you have purchased and installed H5-VS software.   Since H5-VS is only a Windows product the download for the plug-in is a Windows EXE because when you run that EXE it'll check for the H5-VS software installation and if it doesn't see it, it'll stop, so to be successful in extracting the Mac plug-in you have to use a Windows PC and have purchased some Windows software.
You can examine the contents of the LRPLUG.EXE by renaming it to something like LRPLUGIN.EXE.ZIP and opening it with 7ZIP; however, the contents aren't something where you can just extract and run w/o the license check.
The only way forward seems to be to purchase the H5-VS software and install it on Windows and then download and run the LRPLUG.EXE on that same Windows computer to extract the plug-in installers, and then run those on the appropriate platform.
However, the H5-VS software doesn't appear to be for sale, anywhere, although the Fuji people do seem to hint they will have a solution at some point in the near future--perhaps it is only available in Japan ATM.
Most of this information was gleaned from the download page for the plugin, here:
    Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® (Windows 8 / 8.1 / 7 SP1, Mac OS X 10.7-10.10) | Fujifilm Glob…
Which is the page you get to after agreeing to the terms and conditions of downloading the plug-in from this page:
    Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® (Windows 8 / 8.1 / 7 SP1, Mac OS X 10.7-10.10) | Fujifilm Glob…
The bottom line is that while the tethering plug-in is for both a PC and a Mac the licensing dependency is on a Windows-only program so the plug-in installers are contained within a Windows-only program and the missing link is how to acquire the required H5-VS Windows program to satisfy the licensing requirement for the plug-in packaging utility so it'll extract the plug-in installers for each platform.
From what the pages, say, there is also going to be a version of the plug-in available on Adobe Exchange that won't require having H5-VS already, I guess, but that is not available, yet, either, so lots of announcements, and mostly a lack of follow-through..

  • 8830 - tethering capability does not work after os upgrade

I upgraded the software on my 8830 world edition from 4.2.2.176 to 4.2.2.196 to increase functionality of business use.  The tethering capability that i had with the previous version of software does not work.  Installed newest version of VZAccess Manager from Verizon.   Nothing.  The phone has great coverage with all five bars as 1xEVDO.  When modem mode is enabled on the phone via tethering, the signal switches to 1x only and I get an error message stating server is not responding.  HELP!!!  I am on the road a tremendous amount and greatly rely on the connectivity that the blackberry provides.  Thanks.

    Update -
After last reset and reupgrade with the newest firmware for hardware version 1 I could config the router and connect 2 computers with wireless - but only for about 15 mín - then they lost connection and could not reconnect.
I did then get the newest update for hardeware version 2 - just to try and upgraded with that and got success, and now I have reset the router again and config it and those 2 computers are connected and have been for 1 hour now. So seems to be working - is it okay to have the firmware for hardware version 2 on my version 1 router?
Any thought what is going on - could it be that the other firmware had not loaded compleytle or?

  • Tethering using bluetooth

I have enabled Tethering on Orange UK and have no problems over USB cable, well in fact using that to write this message right now !
However Bluetooth tethering is so far less successful.
I have tried to Bluetooth tether to my admittedly pre-historic or perhaps Classic 12" Powerbook G4 with almost NO success so far .
The iPhone and PBG4 pair okay and the PBG4 is running 10.5.8 (however very slowly even with 1.125 ram and 7200PRM drive !)
I go to the menu bar select the IPhone and connect to network the iPhone briefly flashes the Blue tethering banner and safari begins to load .
After just a very few seconds however the tether link fails time and again.
The PBG4 says the network is still active but its NOT and what ever i try i can't get it to work again.
I know that the PBG4 is an old lady now and could the problem be that the Bluetooth clip is just revision 1.1 compounded with a USB 1.1 bus perhaps ?
Having said i can't get bluetooth to work on my MacPro either -the same crash out happens here too.
I known that the batteries drain exponentially via bluetooth but as i use tethering sparingly on the road when i need to visit certain business sites would rather use Bluetooth if only because a don't want to dig around my work bag looking for the cable.
(The cable is very likely to get damaged with all the other work stuff i haul day to day !)
Does any one have similar experience and/or suggestions to solve this problem please.

    Yes thought so .
Looks to be time to retire the old lady for a 13" Macbook Pro then.
Better arrange a meeting with accountant (wife) to authorise expenditure then !
