Tethering the Playbook to a Non-Blackberry Smartphone

Warning - I'm a Tech Journalist - Whatever you say can and will be used against you
I've been told that a Playbook can be tethered to most smart phones for email. Unfortunately the people who told me this weren't technical enough to be able to explain how, and my readers aren't so much interested in the capability, as in the nitty gritty details of how it works, and precisely what type of hardware the phone needs to have to be used for email tethering.
I've wasted an hour so far fighting with both the main website, and with the RIM corporate phone system. I'll tell you straight off that both suck big time. On the other hand, they aren't any worse than Apple's, and they are a hell of a lot better than what Microsoft has.
So, the questions are:
1) How does email tethering technology work?
2) What hardware does the phone need?
3) What software does the phone need?
4) How do you set it up?
5) What question didn't I ask, that I should have?
I always toss in the last question, because you know your product far better than I ever could. And while I've seen and touched a Playbook, I haven't actually really used one yet, so I really can't claim to know very much about them.

JSanders,
I'm going by what I was told by a RIM engineer - unfortunately at the time I had people waiting for me, and couldn't stay to talk.
OK, well, unless you can get back in touch with him, your 'known' options are above.
And you're question is not really clear, anyway. You want to "tether" to a non-BlackBerry smartphone for email... let's say an iPhone, to view your email ON the smartphone? No, not happening.
You want to "tether" to a non-BlackBerry smartphone for email... let's say an iPhone, to view your email your email via the web browser, again like logging into your Gmail account? That could be possible. But again, why not just use the WiFi connection.

As to talking to Media Relations - do you think that they'd actually know the answers to technical questions? My experience is that talking to Media Relations about technical issues is usually about as useful as using your automobile for waterskiing.
Just a suggestion if you are "media". They will bend over backwards to help you.
Anyway, you have the answers. If you still need more information, give a day or two and let the geeks play and we'll know more than the RIM engineers

Good luck with that...I'm trying to do the same thing.
I work for AT&T Customer Care/Tech Support and there's no way in hell I would recomend the 8220 to any customer unless RIM will actually start doing some customer service. Ive even recomended to AT&T never to support this device until RIM solves this OBVIOUS device issue.
I've even offered to RIM that I am willing to pay some for an upgrade - or a downgrade to a lesser Blackberry - I don't care which, I just want a Blackberry that actually works!
I don't think RIM will do anything untill forced to - ie. if someone needs to call 911 on an 8220 and it shuts off and someone ends up dying as a result. The court case would be LOVELY to see... Would be nice to see a class-action-lawsuit over this issue as well...
If RIM would actually give us an option of replacing this obvious lemon of a phone, maybe, just MAYBE we wouldnt be as upset and would remain loyal customers/users - Just sayin...

  • Introducing Enhanced Google Mail plug-in for BlackBerry smartphones

    Enhanced Google Mail™ plug-in for BlackBerry® smartphones
    Product Overview
The Enhanced Google Mail™ plug-in for BlackBerry® smartphones introduces an advanced level of email service integration for BlackBerry smartphones. It supports additional Google Mail™ features that provide BlackBerry® Internet Service subscribers with broader access to their Google Mail accounts while on the go.  The Enhanced Google Mail plug-in is optional. Existing and new Google Mail integrations will continue to function without it.
Note: The Enhanced Google Mail plug-in requires BlackBerry® Device Software 4.5 or later and Google Mail integration within the BlackBerry Internet Service. The Google Mail integration must use IMAP, not POP, to function correctly. Google Mail accounts integrated after March 2009 use IMAP. Deleting an existing account and re-integrating it will ensure that the account is using IMAP.
BlackBerry smartphone users with existing integrated Google Mail accounts must re-associate their email accounts to receive the link to download the Enhanced Google Mail plug-in.
    Features
Add and remove labels and stars on email messages
    Report spam email messages
    Perform local and remote searches
    Archive email messages
View related email messages as a single conversation (threaded view)
Note: Synchronization happens in one direction, from the BlackBerry smartphone to the Google Mail account. This means that some changes that take place in the webmail UI are not reflected on the BlackBerry smartphone. These include:
Applying labels and stars to email messages in Google Mail after they are retrieved by the BlackBerry Internet Service.
Labels that are renamed in Google Mail are not applied to the corresponding labels on the BlackBerry smartphone. The new label is synchronized to the BlackBerry smartphone, but does not replace the existing label.
Email messages that are marked as read, archived, or spam in Google Mail are not marked as spam on the BlackBerry smartphone.
Labels cannot be created, renamed, or deleted using the BlackBerry smartphone.

I'm having similar show-stopper issues.  I should point out that I'm not actually using an @gmail.com address; I'm using a Google Apps account for my own domain name.   Perhaps that accounts for some of my issues.  I'm using an AT&T Bold with OS 4.6.0.167 (Platform 4.0.0.217), and I have a BES plan to get mail from my employer (the phone and the AT&T account are mine).  I did not upgrade from an old Gmail plugin; I installed the Gmail plugin for the first time.
    1)  Having messages appear in both the main Messages inbox and the Gmail inbox is not a convenience. It would be nice to be able to segregate these, as with the option to keep SMS/MMS messages out of the main inbox with Messages Options > General Options > SMS and Email Inboxes > Separate.
    2)  I have a lot of Gmail filter rules that apply labels to incoming messages and "skip the inbox."  When I receive one of these messages on my Blackberry, I get a new message notification (asterisk) on both my main Messages inbox and my Gmail inbox.  The "skip the inbox" messages are visible in the main Messages inbox, but not in the Gmail inbox (unless I Filter on "All Mail" in the Gmail inbox).  To get rid of the new message asterisks, I need to open both inboxes.
The whole reason I choose the "skip the inbox" option is that I don't want to see these messages unless I explicitly filter on that label.  It's bad enough that I get them in my Messages inbox, but to have Messages behave one way and Gmail another is nutty.
    3)  I'm not seeing all of my new Google Apps mail on my Blackberry, even when I choose Filter > All Mail from the Gmail inbox.  In the standard Gmail client I see everything; but only selected messages appear on the Blackberry.  I haven't been able to pin down what the pattern is.  At first it seemed that incoming mail had to have a label applied to it by a filter to appear on the Blackberry, because all the messages I have been able to receive on the Blackberry have had a label.  I haven't yet seen any unlabeled message.  What what makes it tough to pin down is that I have never received a test message I have sent to myself, and I have tried using my work e-mail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail and AOL Webmail.  0% success rate sending myself a test message (even when a filter applies a label to these messages); 0% success rate receiving mail that Gmail filters don't apply a label to.
I guess the issue could be with Google's IMAP implementation.  I haven't yet looked at my inbox with another IMAP client to see how that looks.  I'll try that next.
    4)  On the topic of IMAP:  If that's the interface to Gmail, it seems strange that I can't view my whole inbox.  I can only view new mail since the date/time I first set up the Blackberry Gmail plugin.  That would make sense for POPmail, but not for IMAP should be able to show me my whole inbox.
Google's Blackberry Gmail app (from m.google.com/mail) has none of these issues, but it has other limitations (no push mail; no HMTL in messages), so I'd use Blackberry's plugin if it worked better.  For now I expect to abadon after another couple of days of noodling.

is there a way to password lock specific files I put on the playbook - both media & non-media files/folders?
ideally if a file is password locked, it can also be made hidden?

from my personal perspective, a device should always be password protected. I cannot see any case where you would accept for any device to be borrowed for someone to use.

  • Tethering via USB between the Z10 and a laptop or PC & and few Comments About the Playbook Tethering

Tethering via USB between the Z10 and a laptop or PC can be a bit tricky.
On the Z10 do the following:
On the Z10 go to the Settings.
    Go to Network Connections.
    Go to Internet Tethering.
    Select USB.
    Turn on Tethering.
On the computer run the Blackberry Link software for the Z10:
Once the software starts, connect the Z10 via the USB cable to the PC.
    Open the browser.
You should now be able to cruise the net, and do emails.
With the Playbook, the Bluetooth tethering does not yet work. This may be an OS or communications issue.
The best way to tether the Playbook for full speed and functions is using the WiFi option. Simply turn on the WiFi hot spot option and follow the instructions. The Playbook WiFi must also be properly set up. The Z10 USB and Bluetooth tethering mode must be turned off when using the WiFi mode. You can leave the base Bluetooth active on the Z10. There is a lot of available information about using the WiFi hot spot from the Z10. The process is very similar to the past models of Blackberry phones.
If you use the Bridge mode to tether, the Playbook email client software does not work very well. The browser will work fairly well, but slower with the Bridge mode. With WiFi the Playbook can brows at very high speed. With Bluetooth it is restricted to about 1.5 to 2.5 mb/sec. Take care that the WiFi mode burns through battery time very fast on both the Playbook and the Z10. Using the Bridge mode uses less power consumption than WiFi.
To use the Bridge mode, make sure the Playbook and the Z10 are first Bluetooth mated. Also the Bridge mode has to be set up between the devices. You will have to first install the Bridge software in to the phone for this to work.
I did extensive testing between the Z10 and the Playbook. They function well together as far as Internet and email are concerned, in consideration of using either tether or Bridge, depending on what you want to do.
From what I understand the Bridge mode uses some compression. It will not be as fast as using WiFi or Bluetooth tethering. The data cost using the Bridge mode is probably a bit lower because of the compression.
As far as the Bridge phone options are concerned, these features are not yet available. From what I read in a number of articles there are going to soon be some updates coming out to fix this. The Bridge options are a big part of the tablet application with the Blackberry phone. This was the big original application point of this tablet, otherwise any generic tablet would do the job.

From the look of this thread it appears that no one outside of Canada uses an OS 10 BB yet.  247 views and no comments or help ?  I'm sure I'm not the only BB user that uses Tether.  If BB doesn't care to help then this will just be another nail in the corporate coffin that has been projected.
Maybe we need different forums for US users as the Canadians don't seem to have the same issues or cares.
The whole idea of the app Tether is not to have to pay the outrageous tethering fees that US carriers charge and it has worked well for years.  But it can't work and won't work in the future without help from BB and the BB community.

  • Why do we want a cellular network with a special service plan to connect to the internet via a BlackBerry smartphone?

I always wondered why we need a cellular network with a special service plan to connect to the internet via a BlackBerry smartphone?  This problem is not occuring on smartphones of other brands. Can anyone please explain this to me?
    Hasanta

    Hello,
The reason is that, with legacy (e.g., pre-BB10) devices, the device itself does not do all of the work to provide you with your services. Rather, there is infrastructure (BlackBerry Internet Service - BIS) hosted at the carriers/BlackBerry that provides linkages between your device and certain services. This includes, among many things, email...unlike non-BB smartphones, the BlackBerry on-device email client is not a "full" email client; it depends on BIS in order to provide the "push" email capability that BBs rely on.
This BIS infrastructure is unique to BlackBerry, and only services BB users. Hence, it costs extra for the carriers to provide services for BB users, and therefore they can demand from their BB users a higher cost dedicated service plan so as to enable those proprietary services for the BB users. (In some markets, there is no extra charge for BIS...but the requirement for BIS nevertheless remains in all markets for legacy BB users.)
So, this is not a "problem" per se...but rather a difference between BlackBerry devices/services and others. One could instead think of it as a "market discriminator", favoring BlackBerry (only for those who desire such, of course).
With BB10 (Z10, Q10, Q5), BIS has been eliminated btw.
    Good luck!

  • HT204266 I am trying to connect a blackberry playbook to the Mac.  I have OS 10.5.1 and it says I need OS 10.6.  Is that a free update or do I have to purchase a new OS?  I just want to load music on to the playbook.

Trying to connect a blackberry playbook to the Mac.  It says I need OS6.  Is that a free update or do I have to buy a whole new operating system?  Just want to download some music to the playbook.  Also, is it possible to use a iTunes card directly to the playbook and bypass the Mac?  Thanks for any info you can provide.

The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 or 10.8 is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

  • Tips for getting BlackBerry Desktop Manager to detect the BlackBerry smartphone!

Here are a few tips that may help if your PC is unable to detect your BlackBerry smartphone!
    1.    Install the desktop manager software – when installing the Desktop Manager software that came with your device be sure to Not have the BlackBerry connected to the computer during this process.
    2.    Always use the USB ports from the back of the computer; never use a USB hub or a docking station USB port.
    3.    If you have another UBS cable you can try doing that to make sure it is not the cable causing the issue.
    4.    If you are using a laptop computer disable the power management settings.
        a.    For Windows-XP and Vista do the following to disable power management on the USB ports
            i.     On the computer, right-click My Computer and select Properties.
ii.    Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

            vi.    Click OK.
vii.    Repeat steps i. through vi. for each USB Root Hub listed in BlackBerry Device Manager.
    5.    If you have uninstalled and reinstalled the Desktop Manager Software trying using the following knowledge base article to do a “clean uninstall” of the software. http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB02206
    6.    The existing USB driver installed is for an earlier model of the BlackBerry smartphone.
        a.    Manually upgrade the USB driver for the BlackBerry smartphone by completing the following steps:
            i.     Right-click My Computer and select Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
ii.     Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, verify that the BlackBerry smartphone is found.
iii.    If an exclamation mark is displayed, right-click the BlackBerry smartphone and select Update Driver.
iv.    If the Hardware Update Wizard prompts you to use Windows Update, select No not this time and click Next.
            v.     Choose Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
vi.    Choose Don't search. I will choose the driver to install and click Next.
vii.    Click Have Disk and then choose Browse.
            viii.   Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers.
ix.    Double-click on RimUsbNT.inf, click OK, and then click Next.
    7.    If you have another PC try using that PC to see if you able to get the device connected
    8.    If you do not have another PC then try creating a new user account on the PC and then install the Desktop Manager software on that new profile.
