Hello Flash46,
It sounds like you are unable to use your TV as an external monitor over HDMI due to some unexpected behaviour. I would use these troubleshooting from the following article to help troubleshoot this issue:
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.

  • No sound when I connect my Macbook pro (2012) to TV via HDMI!

Hi! I have a problem with the sound when I connect my Macbook pro (bought in 2012) to a Phillips HD TV. The strange thing is that it only happens with some videos (specially youtube videos) but the sound works perfectly with films and audio files I have in my computer, and also when I watch TV online (Eurosport player for instance and other similar applications). It's even stranger because it doesn't happen all the time; last week I tried many times to watch some youtube videos and after unplugging the HDMI cable it seemed to work. As I said, with Eurosport player and many films downloaded in my macbook I don't have this problem (sound is ok all the time), and this is why I'm really confused. I suppose it's not a connection problem, otherwise I wouldn't have sound in any video, right? I've tried two different HDMI's cables but nothing has changed. Please, someone help me, as I can't figure out what's happening. Thank you very much!

Well Im not sure what the fix is for your problem, but can you please open up the sound preference next time you connect the philips tv, and make sure that sound output is set to hdmi out. Then try and play your video's etc and see if they are affected.
I can tell you I get a similar problem when, for example, I have a youtube window open and then connect the external display. The youtube video will not sound out through the cable, however if i refresh the window it works. Also the same when I use bluray player on mac, I have to close it and open it again for the sound to output through the external monitor.

jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times.

  • I can only see pink fuzz when I connect my Macbook Pro to my TV.

Hello.  I am using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, on 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and with 500GB of storage.  It's installed with OS Yosemite and I have it connected to my Philips 50/60 Hz, 74W TV via a VGA to component video cable and a thunderbolt adapter.  All I get on the screen in fuzzy magenta and black flickering.  Why is this, and is there anything I can do about it?
    Cheers.

Thanks, Brenden.  I have looked at that page; the fist time it went over my head!  I've read it a second time and is it true that you can't attach an adapter (thunderbolt to VGA) to another (VGA to RCA)?
This is a picture from the internet of a TV just like ours.  It's a flat screen CRT television.

  • HT1151 when I connect my macbook pro to a dell projector I find the images are not clear during powerpoint presentation. Can anyone make suggestion to improve this. all the writing is very clear

  • How to connect my macbook pro to LDC television

    I have a macbook pro 13-inch, mid 2012 model.
I have an LCD television of 32 inch from panasonic (TH-L32C8K).
My TV does not have hdmi port but have vga and AV ports.
To connect to Macbook I bought an thunderbolt to hdmi cable. Then I bought an hdmi to vga cable. So my final arrangement is like this
    Macbook<-->thunderbolt-to-hdmi-cable<-->hdmi-to-vga-cable<-->Television
On the television i changed to AV mode to PC. But nothing is shown on the tv screen. My TV works with other thing. When i connect the macbook pro, it does not show anything. Can you guys suggest whats going wrong? Before buying this macbook, i was like dreaming about it. But now life became so hard using the mac. Everything is pricy and not compatible to outside world devices.

That's a complete mess and I am not suprised that it is not working.
Instead of getting two adapters, you could just get a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter and a simple VGA cable, so you can be sure it will work. Maybe you should have looked for more information before purchasing anything.

  • Problems connecting my macbook pro to my samsung led Tv

Hi. I try to present some pictures and videos by connecting my macbook pro to my samsung led Tv but my mac doesn't recognize the Tv (or it could be that my TV doesn't recognize the mac). What should I do?

I have problems too with some projectors and the DVI--VGA adapter that came with my MBP. The projector is recognized by the computer, but does not show any signal.
With the help of Stéphane Madrau, who has written the excellent tool SwitchResX, I found out that the projector reports that it takes digital input when I connect the MacBook Pro, but analog when I connect it to my 12" PBG4. From the DDC information (collected with SwitchResX):
    MacBook Pro, DVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Digital
    PBG4, miniDVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Analog input with: 0.700V / 0.300V
    Separate Sync
    Composite Sync
Given that the VGA cable is analog only, I would think that the MBP tries (or rather, does) output digital signals only, which don't make it into the VGA cable. If I find a solution I will post it here.
The clue was that the computer did not report any vertical scan frequencies for the external display, while it did so for a projector that worked.

  • Problems connecting my  MacBook Pro to a video projector

I have a MacBook Pro. I have used it many times to connect to a video projector and give presentations in my classroom. Lately, it is hit or miss concerning whether the laptop will give a signal to the computer. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I have followed the instructions in the MacBook guide.(Start with projector and laptop off, connect, turn on, etc. )
I am using the DVI to VGA adapter. I have also tried to use the function keys and manually tried to get it to detect displays. Can't think of what to do next. I gave up and hooked up a Windows computer and it worked.
Could it be the adapter? Does anyone have any ideas I can try? Thanks!

  • "No Signal" on my Samsung TV when trying to connect my MacBook Pro

When I try to connect my MacBook Pro to my Samsung HDTV it says no signal. My Pro doesn't flash blue or anything. I'm using a rocketfish adapter with an HDMI cable connected to it. I got my Pro in June 2010. Any idea on how to get this to work?

    Hello TT31,
A quick fix you might attempt would be making visible, then clicking, the 'Detect Displays' button in the Displays pane of System Preferences. It can be made visible by holding the Option key once you've brought up the Displays pane (it will appear at the bottom right near the question mark).

  • When you buy a macbook pro does it come with all the software you need

when i purchase a macbook pro with retina display. will it come with all the software i need

    Hi logan_logan,
Probably all depends on your past experience, but I'm getting a new Macbook Air next week, and I will be purchasing Microsoft Office. I have been using Word and Excel for years, and know all of the tricks, bells, and whistles, so just really don't want to go through a major learning curve to figure out how to use a new word processing and spreadsheet processing system.
I've had a little experience with Pages on my iPad (which I know is not even a close comparison to what is on the Mac), but I'm just more comfortable with Word.
So, I'd say depends on whether you want something that you are comfortable with, or something that is a new adventure! What's your pleasure?

  • When I connect my Macbook air to my TV, using a Mini Display Port/HDMl adaptor and an HDMl cable, the only thing that appears on the TV screen is the Air's background screen,

When I connect my Macbook Air to my TV via the thunderbolt outlet and using a Mini Display Port/HDMl adaptor, the only image that appears on the TV screen is that of my Air background. There is obviously a signal getting through to the TV, but it is not sending images of anything else, and am unable to watch video through my Air. Any advise/suggestions?

This is called "extended desktop mode".  It's an extension of the desktop off to the right (by default) of your MBair screen.  Grab an app and drag it off the right side of your MBair screen and it will appear on the TV.
To mirror your MBair screen on the TV you can press Command F1.  This will toogle between mirror and extended desktop.
You can find all the settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.
