Text Console Resolution
Hi, i have a problem ... how can i change text console resolution for ex. 1024x768 ?? I tried add vga=792 in grub kernel entry (like in RHEL) but it doesn't work. Can somebody help me ??
Hmm, i'm not sure if you can do that. On SPARC i think you can change it by editing the output-device variable in the OBP (even if i don't remember if that affects the text console). I'm not certain if its possible on an x86 platform.

1680x1050 text console resolution
In case anybody cares :-),
I have set this line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/[MY DISK UID] ro vga=0x369
and now I have console with 1680x1050 resolution (that is native to my monitor)
I discovered this accidentally cause I had a wrong number for the vga and my system
complained about this error and suggested me the possible values :-)
So, I hope someone will find this usefull :-)OK, I have found this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=481411 topic
about the same issue, so this is not as hot as I thought.
But, nevertheless, better twice than never ;-) -
Black screen is in interactive and interactive text (console) mode
I want to install Solaris 10 on HP Proliant DL380 G5. After installing drivers for Smart Array (from CPQary3.iso) I can't see this:
"Starting Solaris Interactive (graphical user interface) Installation.
You must respond to the first question within 30 seconds or the installer
proceeds in a non-window environment (console mode)".
The screen now is black in both modes: interactive and interactive text (console)
If I don't install CPQary3 then graphical user interface works good, but "No disks found" :)
What can I do with it?
Edited by: Blutang on Jan 14, 2009 2:07 AMwell the problem has been solved...hope this may help others having this issue.
i basically just let the battery run out, then connected the ipod to my laptop and voila...it reset and all is well again...
pretty random, but glad it is all working again. -
Trying to set console resolution to 1440x900 at startup
Hi, I've got an NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500M and I'd like to set my console resolution to 1440x900.
For starters, X works just fine. Everything goes great.
But when I boot into the console, I can't set a resolution any higher than 1024x768 which, on this laptop, looks pretty wonky. I've tried vbetest and having GRUB ask me at bootup, but nothing shows me an available resolution near 1440x900.
Any thoughts? Danke.Hello
The solution is to use KMS (Kernel Mode Settings), to get the kernel to initialise the GPU itself, thus allowing every video mode in the console. This requires the nouveau driver.

[SOLVED] Lost my text console
After the last full upgrade yesterday, something odd has happened to my console. I don't use any kind of gdm; I boot (with nomdeset) to a text-only console and then run startx if/when I'm ready for GUI stuff. When I want a larger, full-screen font or just avoid the clutter of a desktop, I'll ctrl-alt-F{x} to a non-GUI console. When I'm ready to reboot, I quit out of fluxbox and do so.
All of a sudden, once I start xorg the text consoles are gone. ctrl-alt-F1 takes me to a blank screen; if I exit out of xorg entirely there are no visible consoles anywhere and I have to blindly ctrl-alt-del to reboot. It's not a crippling problem -- I can do whatever I want through xterm -- but it's annoying.
graphics card is an onboard Radeon 6530; using the arch implementation of the catalyst driver (catalyst-hook). Has anyone else seen this happen?

I got workaround from one of the bug reports in the unofficial site : just pass vga=... (say vga=792 ) to kernel from grub
This fixed it for me -
Is it possible to deactivate the beep/bell in text console [not in X]

Very thanks,
gethostbynameTo do the kind of thing you are talking about you will need to implment a Java Bean in your form listen for the changes. Take a look at KeyEvent Java Bean or the Oracle Forms PJCs-Java Beans web site for more information and examples.

Console resolution and X on dual screen
I'm using a laptop with an external display.
The laptop max resolution is 1024x600 and the external's is 1680x1050.
I've got xorg running this script on login:
# If an external monitor is connected, place it with xrandr
# External output may be "VGA" or "VGA-0" or "DVI-0" or "TMDS-1"
EXTERNAL_OUTPUT="VGA"
INTERNAL_OUTPUT="LVDS"
xrandr |grep $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT | grep " connected "
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT --off --output $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT --auto
else
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT --auto --output $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT --off
fi
Then when I close my window manager, this script runs:
#/bin/sh
xrandr --output VGA --off --output LVDS --auto
fluxbox-remote "Exit"
The only time the console resolution is correct is after i've closed my window manager and this script has run.
I'm using hal and don't have an xorg.conf. Is this the issue? I also have VGA=790 in my grub config. I guess my question is, what am I missing, and would there be a better way to do this?
Edit: if it helps, im using an intel gma945 in an msi wind
Last edited by keegan (2009-05-22 00:43:39)Okay, I got the console to work from bootup using vga=normal. Now the only time my console is unusable is after leaving xorg when I had been using the external screen and didn't run my script at logout. So when i reboot/shutdown, kill x, crash x or switch to a vt (ctrl-alt-Fx) the screen is jacked up. If I never startx, or make sure to use my script to close x, everything is okay.

Keyboard lag in plain text console
Hi everybody!
I'm experiencing a strange keyboard lag on both of my two machines, but only in plain text console.
Both consoles uses framebuffer (in 1024x768 and 800x600 modes). There are kernel26, Xorg 7.0 and Xfce 4.2 on both machines. No special fb driver used (eg. no nvidiafb or vesa-tng).
One PC uses nv, another - nvidia driver. In X everything is OK.
Has anyone the same problem?hi,
I have this problem, too, but it only appears on my virtual console #1, if I switch to 2,3, ... it works as it should.

[Solved...sort of]Changing grub and console resolution during boot
I recently purchased a new monitor that runs at 1920x1080, my older monitor was at 1920x1200, and when I boot now I end up with a boxed output, black borders on each side. This influences how my grub looks and how my terminal looks at startup. I've changed the settings so my WM looks and works properly, but I am not sure how to change, or update, the resolution for my boot-up process. I could use some assistance. Thanks!
EDIT:
Well I found out that I can only change my resolution in grub based on what is shown in vbeinfo when booting with grub. The strange thing is that the resolution being used is 1920x1080x32, which is the recommendedd, and max resolution of my monitor. I also noticed my BIOS splash screen is also being shown with black borders on all sides.
EDIT:
Well it looks like this is problem with OCD on my monitor, and my NVIDIA card. Looks like it's pretty wide spread without any real solution. I'll mark this as solved since this has nothing to do with grub or linux settings.
Last edited by barefly (2015-05-10 02:50:01)jasonwryan wrote:Did you regenerate your grub config?
I just tried this by running grub-mkconfig without changing any settings in /etc/default/grub, and it didn't work. So I went ahead and modified /etc/default/grub on my next boot to another valid resolution and restarted. That had no effect either. The last thing I tried was manually adding the preferred resolution instead of leaving it at auto. None of the changes made any difference. It only changed the way my text was outputted, making it more or less scrunched really. I think the issue could be stemming from the monitor and bios are interacting, since my bios splash screen starts with the black border, and then grub inherits the screen properties, and then in turn linux inherits these settings before my video card finally kicks in after tty and x starts.

There's been this white, or transparent bar on the right side of the browser (picture for reference: http://imgur.com/Jhzn9ym )
That annoying bar makes the whole browser become blurry in resolution and it even affects how I click on links, for example lets say I click on link, the browser will think im just highlighting text and make me click about half an inch to the right in order to click the link I want. I guess the transparent bar throws off the browser as if that bar isn't there but yet the browser has adjusted to fit the faulty resolution. I know about computers and I'm not a stay at home mom that has no idea how to fix things, if you notice the image the browser is fully opened, as in the button that has the square to make the browser fit the window is clicked, so the browser is set to fit. This is really annoying because it just throws off the way I use it and the functionality is not there any more.If the Firefox window isn't maximized can you then drag te windows borders to make it fill the full screen width?
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
*Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
*(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

[bash] Console resolution issues
Hi everyone!
I`m a Debian user who recently converted into Arch. I am really happy with the functionalty and way the system operates(hello up to date kernel ), but I have an issue with one thing. I built an old pc from leftovers and got an old 9" crt screen. I want to make it my personal mp3 player using ssh and mocp. The thing is when /dev becomes populated the resolution jumps into the one the screen and gfx card is able to provide. Unfortunately this screen supports 640x480 and 800x600, but due to the size I would prefer to run it in vga mode(640x480). I tried to force the resolution via GRUB but no dice. Any ideas? Thankskgas wrote:you need to disable KMS in that case.(KMS is enabled by default) i915.modeset=0 in the kernel line and blocking the modules help you to resolve this issue and wiki is your friend,
What I did was the other way around - I used nomodeset during boot and it worked!
No you do not need to disable kms. Just do video=VGA-1:640x480 or similar.
Btw, why not just use a larger font and let the res stay at 800x600?
Tried this but its a junky 9" monitor for ~3 dollars I got on a flea market and failed at this for no apparent reason(other screens worked on 640x480 with no problem). Also tried to force 8bpp, no luck with that. Guess its hardware dependant.
Thanks for the help everyone!

How to change [console, login, single-user] screen resolution?
Hello people.
This computer has a 1600x1200 capable screen but it show console (by "console" I mean the DOS-like interface showning white text at startup, single-user (command-s) mode as well as the graphical boot logo and Login screen) in 800x600 only. This is bad
Give me a Linux system and I'll go right to the bootloader settings and/or kernel arguments line. There it is. I have tried very hard to find the way. I have not given up yet but I am tired of not-finding my way around. There must be a way!
My question is: How does one go about setting the console resolution?
Interesting fact: Upon cold-boot, the screen is set at 800x600@60Hz-or-so all the way up to my desktop where it switch to my user-defined settings (1280x1024@85Hz). To log out gives back the Login screen at a proper resolution.I found that in /var/log/windowserver.log
Server is starting up

Changing virtual console video mode timings
I’ve been trying to figure out how to tweak the video timing for virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F6). I’m pretty sure KMS (kernel mode-setting) is running; the VCs are at 1280 × 1024 resolution and the Nouveau kernel module is running.
My motivation is that I have an LCD where the default timings (that apparently come from EDID information from the monitor itself!) aren’t handled perfectly by the monitor. In X, I am reducing the “front porch” by 8 dots using xrandr and this gives a correct image, at least while I am using X:
O=DVI-I-1
# Horiz. values from EDID: 1280 1328 1440 1688
xrandr --newmode metho 108 1280 1320 1432 1680 1024 1025 1028 1066
xrandr --addmode "$O" metho
xrandr --output "$O" --mode metho
I am looking for a way to do the equivalent to the other virtual text consoles. I’ve read about a video kernel parameter for setting the resolution, but I haven’t tried it because I haven’t seen any indication you can set the timing with it. I have tried playing with the “fbset” command which mentions some timing settings, but they don’t seem to have any effect.
I’ve also tried making a simple C program to call some libdrm routines like below, but I’m really just stabbing in the dark. This program kind of did what I wanted, but when I switch to another virtual console, the video mode is reverted; even when I switch back to the original console my changes remain undone until I rerun my program.
#include <xf86drmMode.h>
drmModeCrtcPtr crtc = drmModeGetCrtc(drm, crtc_id);
drmModeModeInfo mode = crtc->mode;
mode.hsync_start -= 8;
mode.hsync_end -= 8;
mode.htotal -= 8;
int ret = drmModeSetCrtc(drm, crtc->crtc_id, crtc->buffer_id,
crtc->x, crtc->y, &conn_id, 1, &mode);
drmModeFreeCrtc(crtc);
I fear I am stepping into rather specialised territory, but any clues might be helpful. Even a way to hack or fake the EDID information might make me happy.grey wrote:Are you using a login manager?

[SOLVED] I want to change my tty resolution
Just that, I want to change my console resolution (NOT the font size) cause it doesn't use my whole screen.
I've reading about KMS and i know there's incomplete documentation. I understand this
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KMS wrote:
The format is: video=<conn>:<xres>x<yres>[M][R][-<bpp>][@<refresh>][i][m][eDd]

But where in my kernel i can see which connector. I'm using a laptop and would like to use a resolution 1680x800@60
Any idea on how to know this or how to solve my issue?
Thanks in advance
Last edited by dgarcia (2011-05-22 19:37:36)If you are using an open-source driver(e.g. nouveau) you should have a good tty resolution out of the box, if not, you can do this (i use this for my tty resolution):
pacman -S v86d
And then edit /etc/modprobe.d/uvesafb.conf
nano /etc/modprobe.f/uvesafb.conf
In the line that says "mode_option" set your resolution, e.g.
options uvesafb mode_option=1280x800-32 scroll=ywrap
Edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
and add "v86d" to the hooks array after udev hook,e.g.
HOOKS="base udev v86d ..."
Finally rebuild the kernel image:
mkinitcpio -p kernel26
That's all...this is the preferred method for the framebuffer.
