Text conversion tool is junk

I must say I am disappointed by iWeb - the app has great potential, but there are a lot of gaps that should have been handled by the development team.
My complaint is with the Text Imaging function. It converts non-web text to graphics 'automatically' which is great, , but whatever method it uses is flawed. Sometimes it works for one text box, but doesn't for another text box on the same page with the same font! If you publish like this, the font is rendered as 'Times'.
Weirder - sometimes this happens to ordinary Arial!
If there was a way to set text imaging to happen manually, it wouldn't be too bad, but there isn't! And frankly, having to go to 'Preferences' just to see the indicators is goofy.
There are workarounds for this. The easiest is to apply a drop shadow to part of the text you want imaged, but make the shadow invisible.
OK, but c'mon. This is a bug and it is uncharacteristically sloppy for Apple.

Are you talking about the Select Object tool, which is a small black left pointing arrow, or the Edit Text & Images tool, which looks like a pencil drawing on a piece of paper, or something else?

  • Report Conversion Tool - problem with logging in table OBJ_G_MIGRATION

    Hello Community-Members,
since several days I am searching different BO-Communities for a solution, but I didn't find any threats about my problem.
I am new to BO XI R3.1 and I want to convert deski-reports with the report conversion tool.
I tried it directly on the server-machine and all is ok (report is converted inclusive the logging in the audit-table OBJ_G_MIGRATION).
When I try it on my client-machine, the conversion is made successfully, but there is no result in the audit-table.
On the client-machine, I use the same connection like on the server machine and on both machines, I am logged on (in the report conversion tool) with the "Administrator"-user.
Has anyone an idea? Could it be a problem of user-rights in the Oracle-DB?
    kind regards
    Guenny

    Hello Denis,
    thank you for your reply.
From my client machine I can successfully test the connection to the Audit-DB. With non BO-Tools like "SQL Tools1.4.1" I can also connect to that DB.
After your reply I have tested once again and I have found something else strange.
If I convert a deski-report, and the conversion-status is "not converted", the Audit-DB is written (for example: error-text = "document cannot be read" / workaround = "remove protection password if set").
But when I convert the same report together with an other report, which will result in "partially converted", nothing is written to the Audit-DB (same effect as when I convert only reports with status "partially convertet").
    regards
    Guenny

  • Conversion tool, UTF-8

I am sooo confused about a problem regarding the BIPBatchConversion tool.
The problem occurs because of the swedish characters Å, Ä and Ö
If the report contains any of these characters, the conversion tool fails to create the .xdo file.
Or rather, the .xdo file is created but size is 0.
I think I have tracked the problem to the data template file, xx_template.xml, that was created by the conversion tool.
I guess this file is used when creating the .xdo file.
And, the problem is that the data template file has encoding="UTF-8".
This means I can not even open the template file in my XML editor.
    It says :
'The XML page cannot be opened. An invalid character was found in text content....'
And the invalid character is, of course, the Å, Ä or Ö
There are two ways I can solve this, to be able to open the file with my XML editor :
    A. Open the file with Notepad and change the XML declaration to encoding="ISO-8859-1"
    B. Open the file with Notepad and chose Save As, and change Encoding from ANSI to UTF-8.
After any of these manual steps I am able to open the data template file with my XML editor.
But the BIPBatchConversion tool does not allow med to stop and do this change, it does everything in one command.
So, how can I get to the final step, which is to create the .xdo file ?
Is there another command I can use, to create the .xdo file ?
Or is there a way to make the data template file be created with the declaration encoding="ISO-8859-1' when I run the BIPBatchCoversion command ?
Or maybe there is a way to make the data template file be encoded with UTF-8 instead of ANSI ( can I set this in Windows XP ? )
I hope someone can help me on this one.

Sorry, no good example code to give, but here's the basics.
When you create an InputStreamReader to read your file, it optionally takes an encoding scheme, ie. in your case "Big5_HKSCS".
This means that as you read your source file, it performs the proper conversion to Unicode. ( All Java strings are in Unicode )
When you want to write out that string, using UTF8, again look at the
extra parameter in OutputStreamWriter, and pass in "UTF8"
Note : You must use the "International" version of the JRE to obtain the full list of encoding schemes. If you use the US version, there's only about 8 basic encoding schemes out of the possible 150 or so.

  • Conversion tool question

Again, I have a question regarding the conversion tool, BIPBatchConversion and it's output.
In the original report there is a line like this
    Report Year : 2008
where 'Report Year :' is boilerplate text and 2008 is the selected parameter when the report was run.
In the converted .rtf file this has been implemented as a two column table like this :
    Column 1 in the table:
Report Year : &F_year ( all boilerplate, no form fields )
Column 2 in the table contains a form field with syntax <?P_YEAR?>
The strange thing is that this form field has the default text, F_year ,which is the same that is used in the boilerplate text in column 1 !
    Will this work ?
What is the meaning of the boilerplate text &F_year ?
My expected behaviour would be :
'Report Year :' as boilerplate text, directly followed by the form field containing the parameter P_Year
Customer has several hundreds of Oracle Reports which we would like to autoconvert with minimum hands-on.
If simple things like this is failing, we will not be able to use the conversion tool.....
I have no access yet to customers database, so I can not verify if the converted report is working.
    Edited by: user792912 on Oct 23, 2009 4:35 AM

Nonsense. You can use the conversion tool to get the converted rtf files. Touch up work is usually required no matter what.
To answer your question, you will need to fix the substitution variables that are used as boiler plate text.
Example - Reports6i bad practice: Personally, it's a sloppy practice to do that since a frame could be used and should be used
Report Year:  &P_YEAR  <-Will not convert
    Fix in BIP:
Report Year:  <?.//P_YEAR?>  I believe I answered your question, don't forget to give me the points.

  • Problem when execute report Conversion Tool XI 3.0 on a client

    Hi everyone,
When I use Report Conversion Tool on a client (not on Webi Server Windows 2003) I have an error (a red cross appears) before the conversion.
I believe that RCT can not open the document to migrate.
All it's OK when I use RCT since the Webi Server.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for your prompt response.
I have install all the client tool (even SDK, Query Web Service) except Assitant migration source de données, Gestionnaires Vues d'entreprise et Gestionnaire de traduction.
I think I have a problem of rights on my Windows 2003 Server because in the log of conversion (C:Documents and SettingsUtilisateurLocal SettingsTempconversionUSER146731693logsD30860242.xml)
the following lines are written :
Note that I do the conversion with the Administrator login.

  • Where are text annotation tools?

I'm using Reader 10 to edit a PDF that is enabled for commenting. The Adobe Help shows that there are 10 tools under "Annotations," but my instance shows only 2 (sticky note and highlighter). I can't find a way to add or delete text. How do I find those other text-editing tools?

Thanks, George.  The file is in fact enabled for commenting. The problem seems to have something to do with Acrobat versions. I post the details here, hoping that maybe somebody from Adobe scans this forum. I doubt that my experience is the intended behavior of Reader.
    - The file was sent to me by a client who enabled it for commenting (asking me to edit it).
    - I opened the file with Reader 7, and the file properties showed that it was *not* enabled for commenting.
    - A colleague who received the same file opened it in Acrobat Pro 10 and found that it *was* enabled for editing, as the client claimed.
    - I downloaded and installed Reader 10 and opened the file. The file properties showed that it *was* enabled for commenting. (Note that this is the same file that Reader 7 said was not enabled for commenting.) However, in Reader 10, only the highlight and note tools were offered (not any text editing tools).
    - So I moved the file to another computer that has Acrobat Pro 10 installed and opened it. Acrobat Pro 10 showed that the file is enabled for commenting and the full range of text editing tools is available.
In short, Reader 7 and 10 screwed up.

  • Text select tool not working properly

When I use the text select tool, it selects columns, not words in a row, which is what I want. It used to work correctly. I am using Acrobat Pro, version 9.0.0.
I tried adding the ALT key, with no good result.

Is it with this specific document o any pdf you work on?
If it was earlier working fine for you, try repairing Acrobat  by going to 'Help' menu > Repair Acrobat.
Also make sure you have updated it to the latest patch.

  • Upgrade from ICM 6 to 7 (TR) -- Domain conversion tool / UMT

Hi, we are currently upgrading from 6 to 7.0 and subsequently to 7.5 (TR, new hardware, new domain, new instance).  So far we've staged our W2k3 domain and all the other soon to be ICM servers.
I'm currently trying to migrate the domain users and it tells me that I need to use the Domain Conversion Tool to go migrate the domain users from 6 to 7. (Staging guide chpter 4)
I can't find any documentation on the Domain Conversion Tool, when I run the executable I can see the different triggers (below) but that's it.
I've done an export and gotten a file but what next?
Do I do a convert now?
is the convert going to change my production database?
I'm also reading that the Domain Conversion Tool was replaced by the UMT (for 7.0 to 7.+).
Or should I now use the UMT and point it to my export file?
Im afraid to run the convert and and messing up my Rogger sideA database?
    Has anybody use this tool?
any tips and or documentation is appreciated.  Thanks
    D:\ciscoutils\domainCnvTool>domcvt
The syntax of this command is:
    DomCvt.exe /DB:dbname /F:filename /M:mode [/OD:old domain name]
              [/ND:new domain name][/P:password]
/DB:dbname           Specifies the database name to operate on (e.g. cust1_sideA)
/F:filename          Specifies the full path of the file to import or export to
/M:mode              Indicates export mode or convert mode
                             E  Export mode
                             C  Convert mode
The following switches are only needed in Convert Mode:
/OD:old domain name  Specifies the old domain name to convert from in NetBIOS form (e.g. MyDomain)
/ND:new domain name  Specifies the new domain name to convert to in NetBIOS form (e.g. MyDomain) or DNS form (e.g. MyDomain.mycompany.com)
/P:password          Specifies the default password to be set for all the users in the new domain
Use quotation marks when there are spaces in the file name or password

    Hi,
    From the 7.x(y) Staging Guide:
Common Steps Required before Migrating any ICM ComponentOn the Domain Controllers:
Confirm that Domain Controllers have been upgraded from NT Domain to Windows 2000Active DirectoryOn the CallRouter Server:
     \RouterA\Router\CurrentVersion\Configuration\Global\DBMaintenance.
    Note:
If moving a CICM with SideA and SideB disable the Configuration changes on bothsides.
    On the Logger server:
Copy the Domain Conversion Tool (DomCvt.exe) from the ICM 5.0(0) or ICM 6.0(0) Third-PartyTools CD as applicable (Domain Conversion Utility folder) onto the Logger server.
Export the ICM user list using the DomCvt tool using the following command:
    domcvt /DB:<instancename>_sideA /F:c:\DomConvert\userlist.txt /M:E.
And then lower down in the guide:
    On the Logger server:
    Step 18
Run the Domain Conversion Tool to convert the ICM users exported earlier, using the followingcommand:
domcvt /DB: <instance_name>_sideA /F:c:\DomConvert\userlist.txt /M:C /OD:<old_domain_netbios_name> /ND: <new_domain_netbios_name>Note: You can use the /p option to create a global password. If you do not use the /p option, the password is reset to null.
I'm looking to run this myself shortly. The only caveat with this info is that its extracted from the section related to ICM5 and migration from multiple to single forest ... so possibly not the correct info. However, there's not much documentation on this as you've seen!

  • Acrobat 9.2.0 Update Breaks Text Box Tool, Possibly Introduces a New Security Flaw.

Anyone have any ideas for this one?
Once we upgraded to version 9.2.0 (This is a major security release that fixes a Javascript security flaw) our text box tool no longer works the way we want it and crashes the program.
    Try this:
    1. Open any PDF document on a  Windows XP SP3 computer with Adobe Acrobat 9.2.0.
    2. Add the 'Text Box Tool'  to the toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar and selecting 'MoreTools' then placing a checkbox next to the 'Text Box Tool'.
    3. Click the 'Text Box Tool' on the toolbar and draw a new textbox anywhere on the PDF document.
    4. Click out of the textbox to cancel typing mode, then single click back on the textbox that you just created.
    5. Right-click the textbox that you created and select 'Properties..."
    6. Under the 'Appearance' tab,
    a. Select Style: No Border
    b. Select Fill Color: No Color
    c. Check the box 'Make Properties Default'
    d. Click OK.
    7. Click the Text Box Tool again, and draw another textbox (Since there is no border you will not see it but you will still be drawing a textbox).
    8. Let go of the mouse when you are done drawing your textbox rectangle and the program will crash at this point.
    Results:
    1. "An internal error occurred." dialog box is displayed.
    2. After clicking ok the following "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" dialog box is displayed:
    "Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe
    R6025
    - pure virtual function call
    3. After clicking ok another dialog box is displayed:
    Error signature
    AppName: acrobat.exe AppVer: 9.2.0.124 ModName: acrobat.dll Offset: 000509dd
    4. The same error has occurred on all five computers that we tested the new version on.
Expected results: A new textbox is created and you may start typing in text (This was the behavior in version 9.1.3).
    Additional Information
At times, we need to add information to PDF files (i.e missing dates, etc). We have always used the Text Box Tool to do this with no border, and with no fill color as this is the EASIEST and FASTEST way to add information to PDF files in a precise manner. We want the fill color to be transparent so that we can fit text in between and exactly on lines easier, and so that there is not a solid background box behind the text. We want no border because a border around text that needs to go on a line looks stupid. Up until version 9.2 this procedure worked fine. Now, the program will crash. Perhaps this even adds another security vulnerability if the crash could be exploited. We want to maintain security by patching Adobe to address the JavaScript vulnerability that was addressed in version 9.2.0, however, we are not able to update our users as the new version breaks the fundamental purpose that we use Adobe Acrobat for. We are stuck with the vulnerable version 9.1.3 until this problem is addressed. Disabling JavaScript is not an option either, as we use a Java plug-in on a daily basis.
Any thoughts would be great, I have attached screenshots of the errors.

The question still is not answered.
The problem continues in Acrobat 8.1.7 for Windows, even after updating toAcrobat  8.2.0. ( I can't comment on whether recent updates to Acrobat 9 fix the problem in Acrobat 9.)
The internal error after text insertion problem occurs even with PDF documents created in Acrobat 8, i.e., not only old versions of PDF files. We have the text box insertion icon in the toolbar, and the properties set to "no color" for the box and "0" width for the text box lines, as other commentators have noted.
The problem did not exist when Acrobat 8 Pro was installed, it was introduced by one of the updaters.
The main reason we use Acrobat, rather than much cheaper PDF-creation software, is to annotate PDF files (including inputting data into spaces in standard forms).
So justify the high price of Acrobat and fix the problem please, Adobe !

Have you installed the RCT on the server hosting the CMS service or via a client? I have had this problem myself and resolved it by installing / working directly on the server.

  • Text "disappears" when using text box tool

We are running Adobe Acrobat Standard vers. 7.0.9 inside Thomson Corporation's GoFileRoom vers. 6.0. When using the text box tool to add comments to a pdf, the text within the text box "takes on" the color of the background of the box, making it seem that the text has disappeared. The only way to see the text is to edit the text box and change the font color OR to view the contents of the text box in the Comments section. How do I resolve this? Would appreciate any help.

I am having the same problem. Both with text boxes and text in the actual document. Do you think it is GoFileRoom related? I never made the connection but I wouldn't be surprised. It seems worse when different versions of Adobe are used. Some have ver 7 and other ver 8 but we are all using GFR.

I was successful in installing AA5 in Win7 Starter as a test. It works except that I changed the printer port to file (AcroTray or the Distiller Assistant of AA5 does not work in Win7). You can open the files that are created in Distiller to create PDFs. You may be able to use watched folders to automate the process to some degree.
I suspect that your question is more of having problems reading PDF files in AA5. That is a different issue. It is not a Win7 compatibility issue, but one of needing a newer PDF viewer. I have AA5 on one XP machine that I use Reader X on for seeing the newer files. I do have to deal with some conflicts between AA5 and ARX, but I can deal with that (many folks lose there minds on that).
There is one other option that might be a major problem. Many folks are getting Win7 on 64-bit machines. In that case, you will have to be sure AA5 runs in 32-bit compatibility.
At least that should give you some ideas of what might work. If a 64-bit machine, you may definitely have a problem -- I never tested that combination.
