Text edit and iWorks apps slow to open in 10.9

Hello,
I've got a new MBP, 16GB of RAM, 250 GB Flash SDD. Been working fine up until recently, but now, any app that uses Versioning, like Text Edit, Numbers, Pages, etc. is EXTREMELY slow to open. Note that any app that doesn't use Versioning like Photoshop or Outlook launch instantly. I've tried trashing prefs and cache's, but no dice.
Any ideas? I can't belive I'm the only one that has ran across this.

Maybe it is an internet problems, check your internet connection.

when i try to download a file from the internet it starts to download but when its finished it opens up in the app "text edit" and it says this file cannot open in DOS mode.
    Can anyone help?

It sounds like perhaps the file doesn't have an extension that the system recognizes. Is this all files, or just one specific one, and if so, which? What is the name (and extension, if it has one) of the downloaded file? What kind of file do you *expect* it to be? (PDF, or whatever). Renaming a file with the appropriate extension can often fix that kind of problem.

Try opening Disk Utility in your Applications-Utilities folder and repair permissions.

That is because you don't have a web server configured and running to serve the html page. In order to see the page in a browser you need to access it using a url similar to http://localhost/~yourUserName if you are serving the page from your user account.
Prior to Mountain Lion you could go into web sharing and turn on the web server. With Mountain Lion there is no option, other than using terminal, to turn on the web server. The web sharing menu item has been removed in Mountain Lion. Apache is still on your computer but it will take a little searching these forums or the Internet to find how to turn it on.
If you want a graphic user interface to turn on/off the Apache server you could download and install a server application like xampp, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html. I use this and it works well.

  • Text Edit Character Pallette keeps trying to open

Yesterday I was using Text Edit and I clicked on Edit > Special Characters.
The Special Characters dialog window tried to open but failed. Ever since, the window continuosly attempts to launch at intemitent intervels.
Even after quitting Text Edit and re-starting my computer, the window keeps attempting to launch, blocking whatever I'm doing for a moment each time.
    Can anyome offer any advice?
Here's my theories which may be wrong -
Theory 1: The Special Character window is searching vainly for an Apple font that I've turned off
    Theory 2:
If you have a theory on how to fix and quiet the Text Edit program Special Character window, I'd appreciate hearing it. Thanks.

    Dear Francine,
I tried your suggestions and they worked! First I dug into "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist". I dragged it onto the desktop. Almost immediately, the Character Palette appeared, including characters. I clicked on it's options a couple of times and then my computer froze.
Then I restarted the computer, holding down the "Shift" key. The Special Character Panel stopped trying to pop up.
I did not do anything about fonts, but I think you are also right about that. At the time that the problem started, I had copied some data out of craigslist and I forgot to hold Command/Option/Shift when I pasted it into TextEdit.
I started getting warning messages about two fonts being loaded at the same time. An old Arial font from a graphic design job I did two years ago seemed to be loading.
I have deleted that font from Extensis Suitcase and Font Book as far as I can tell, and I have even deleted the font itself from my client folder, but it keeps coming back from the dead when I forget small stuff like holding Command/Option/Shift. I will have to mosey to the font forum to try to figure it out.
Thank you so much for helping me to find "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist" I never would have known wher to look.

  • I keep receiving this error every time I open LR, "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and the app won't open. It said LR would try and fix this error next time I opened it but the error remains. I tried

I keep receiving this error every time I open LR, "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and the app won't open. It said LR would try and fix this error next time I opened it but the error remains. I tried uninstalled and installing the app and the error remains. I have windows 8. Can anyone please help???

Use Windows Explorer to open the folder containing your catalog. The normal location is Pictures\Lightroom. Locate a folder with the extension .lrdata and delete that folder. Then you should be able to start Lightroom again, and Lightroom will begin building and new previews folder. Do not delete anything else.

If it is the third party apps crashing - try downloading another app - any free app is fine. See if that resets the other apps.

  • Dynamic Text Edit and Groups

    Hi Experts ,
I want to create dynamic text edits and groups.
    Thank You.

    Hi Radhika,
Sorry was busy with some other tasks. Just go through this sample code snippet which does the following.
    1) It dynamically creates a context node named CHILD and then creates 4 attributes ATTR1, ATTR2,..
    2) Creates a GROUP UI element with a caption attached to it
    3) Create 4 textEdit UI elements bound to the 4 context attributes created earlier and embed them within the group

  • Upon upgrading to Yosemite, the Pages and Numbers apps will not open (although they are the latest versions) and Keynote will not upgrade; how do I go about getting the apps to open?

Upon upgrading to Yosemite, the Pages and Numbers apps will not open (although they are the latest versions) and Keynote will not upgrade; how do I go about getting the apps to open? Is this a common issue?

    Hi Madhattanite,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  When did you purchase your Mac?  The first thing I would suggest is to review the information in the resource below for the Up-To-Date Program for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.
Once Yosemite is installed, you should have the option to Accept the Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps in the Mac App Store Purchases pane.
Apple - Up-to-Date Program for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote
    I hope this helps ...

Hi, when I try to open indesign itself this message comes up:
Adobe Indesign cannot load the ACTIONS.RPLN plug-in. The plug-in requires
the 10.1 version of indesign.. Please contact the vendor to get a
    compatible version of ACTIONS.RPLN.
I am not able to click off the message to make the box disappear, so have
    to crash out.

  • The iLife and iWork apps for Mac OS X Mavericks

I tried to download the iLife and iWork apps for my macbook with OS X Mavericks for free but I only downloaded the Garage band. How am I supposed to get them to install on my macbook.

iWork apps are only free for users who bought a Mac after October 1st and for users who already have iWork '09, and iLife apps are free for users who already have iLife '11.
You mention that paid apps are the ones that you cannot download. What happens when you try to download them? If the Mac App Store asks you to pay for them, do it. You are using an old version or you have not got them installed

  • Why won't Text Edit and Preview open in Lion?

I have installed Lion over Snow Leopard on my MacPro Dual Core Intel Xeon AND also mad a clean installation on an external hard drive.
In neither case will Text Edit or Preview open.
When I first log into Lion as the various application open on the desktop I notice that a couple of Text Edit files on the desktop mount a coloured icon. After everything is done the icons revert to a grey and white one with a grey "RTF" in place of the picture.
I found the same problem with pages (1Work 9.0) but then I found and upgrade in the Lion recovery pages on the Apple website. Unfortunately there is nothing similar for Text Edit or Preview.
Otherwise everything else seems to work.

I just found the solution on our problen on another post entitled:
After upgraded to LION, Preview.app and Textedit.app keep crash
The problem only occurred on one account on my machine.  For that account the ownership on the "Library" folder at the root level of that account was wrong.  I set it to the credentials of that user (me) and now both Preview and TextEdit open and work without crashing.  This is a hidden folder when in the Finder, but I use the Terminal application a lot, and from there I did a chown to change the owner and group of the Library folder.  An additional problem is that you need to have root access to make the change.
The discussion I refer to above gives the procedure to use when in the Finder, so if you're not familiar with using the Terminal window, that is probably the best solution.  In that discussion, see the post from Silvertoe on Jul 21, 2011 10:08 PM.
    Good luck.
