Text flow stops midway

I work for a map company and am doing a layout with maps and the street indexes that go with them. When I get a really lengthy text file like Vancouver which has 6500 paragraphs of text (eg. George St. C-15 is an example of what each paragraph is like) the text doesn't flow properly. It will stop right in the middle of a text frame and sometimes even continue in later with a big gap in between. For most of our map layouts the indexes aren't a problem but for cities like Vancouver I have to resort to laying out the index in Quark (yuk!) and importing that image into the indesign layout.
Here are the steps: I import a text file into Indesign text frames that have multiple columns and when the index, which is alphabetical, gets to about the letter J, it just stops...no more text. As I said above, sometimes it will even start back midway through a column. There is nothing wrong with the structure (eg. no text wraps, paragraph spacing, etc) and we've had numerous people here checking to look for some error we've made. Sometimes it will work if I take a text box that was 6 columns and break it into two - 3 column text boxes. There definitely seems to be an issue with the number of lines of text. This only happens with the very large indexes. Is there a limitation on line count in Indesign? Is this where Framemaker is needed? Is there any way around this? I really, really don't want to use Quark.

That long string of numbers separated by commas and no spaces is the problem. It can't break because ID thinks it's a single number and it's too wide for the column.
Since there are presumably no real numbers in the story with actual comma separators that you need to keep from breaking, it would probably be safe to just add a discretionary line break to any place where you have a digit followed by a comma and a digit.
Do a GREP find change. Search for (\d,)(\d) and change to $1~k$2
This translates to find (any digit and a comma)(any digit) [the parentheses are there to group the found text into chunks] and replace with first chunk of found text - discretionary line break - second chunk of found text.

  • Page flow stopped

    I have been editing a chapter for three days with no problems, and out of the blue, the page flow stopped, and I can't get the paragraphs to advance to the next page. I have tried the following things:
    checking to make sure the current and next pages have the same flow. (They do.)
    saving and closing the file, exiting FrameMaker, and restarting my computer
    using a different paragraph tag
    turning off track text edits and attempting to advance to the next page with unmarked text
    entering preview mode with track text edits turned off
    I have the following set up:
    FrameMaker 9.0p237
    Windows 7 64bit
    A very robust computer
    A client with an insane deadline
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Karen, as you're on a deadline I'd suggest that it's easier to resurrect the file by creating a new file rather than troubleshooting what went wrong with the current file.
    1. save your current file as-is, so that you're sure you have both the content that you've entered and the formatting. Personally I'd also do a second backup copy of the problem file with a different name, e.g. xxBAD or something.
    2. create a brand new FM file. With both documents open, in the new file do File > Import > Formats, and select the "old" file in the drop-down menu. Then select which will copy all the master pages and paratags etc. over to your new file. Save this new file with a different name, "xxNew". Be sure to note what settings you've selected on the bottom section "While updating remove", so that if you need to you can re-do the import and change these settings. The initial selection depends on how many style overrides you might have used (if any) in the original document.
    3. In the xxNew file, put your cursor in the text frame at the top of the first (and so far only) page.  Then do File > Import > File. Choose the xxOld file. At the bottom of the dialog be sure to select "copy into document". This will copy the content from the other file into the xxNew file.
    In the "Import text flow" dialog that pops up, choose the Body page flow and the default "A (Main Flow)". Because you've already imported the formats you could use either the default "Reformat Using current document's formats" or the bottom "Retain Source's Formatting" -- the choice depends a lot on whether you have ad hoc formatting in your original document, e.g. highlighted words and just clicked "Bold" from the menu, as opposed to using a character style called "Bold", or changed the alignment of a paragraph but not made a new paragraph tag for that different alignment, both of those examples are of overrides. If you have used a lot of overrides then I would suggest using "Retain source's formatting".
    4. In the xxNew file, page to the end of the document. Put your cursor before the "end of flow" symbol,
    Start typing, enter a few carriage returns, whatever, to be sure that when you reach the end of the page that FM will automatically add a new page and your typing does extend forward onto the next page as you expect.
    Assuming things are ok, then save this xxNew file as the original filename.
    That should get you back to operation, and you can work out what went wrong with the original file once the deadline has passed.

  • Solved: InDesign CC: Problems with text in text box: text flows around invisible object

    I just upgraded from CS4 to CC. I have two problems with text in some text boxes:
    The text seems to flow around invisible object that I cannot find or delete. It's as if there is a photo or other object behind the text box; but when I press COMMAND-a to select all, I don't see any such object.
    When I move this text box, the layout of the text within changes. For example, when the box is high on my spread, the text flows correctly within the box; but when I move it down, it flows around that hidden other object. For another example, when the box is low on the page, the text starts at the top of the box; but when I move the text box up, the text starts somewhere in the middle of the box.
    I have checked margins of the text box and the paragraph options of the text paragraphs (margins, indents, alignments). They all look OK.
    If I modify the text box, checking the box "Ignore text wrap", then the problem goes away; but then the text also will not flow around a real object that I want it to flow around.
    Solution:
    There were objects in a hidden layer on that one spread. It seems that in CS4 when you "select all" you would also select objects in hidden layers; but in CC it doesn't.

  • Text Flow from service order to requisition

    Hi Everyone,
    I having a problem regarding text flow from service orders IW31/IW32 to requisition ME53N.
    I created/updated a service order in IW31/IW32 and enter some text in "Operation Short Text" column. When I release the service order the short text should ideally be reflected in purchase requisition. What's happening right now is that "If the length of text entered in IW32 is more than 40 characters then the text is reflected in requisition ME53N otherwise any updates to this column text are not reflected in ME53N".
    I debugged ME53N and found that it gets the value of text using READ_TEXT so I hope the same is stored in standard text while saving IW31/IW32. I checked the text also which is created after saving Iw32 and it contains changed data only if the length of the data is more than 40 characters.
    To me it looks like standard SAP process that the text will flow from service order to purchase requisition only if the data length is more than 40 characters. If anyone has any idea can you please share. Is there any sugesstion for correcting this. Any reason or OSS.

    Hi,
    my situation is:
    - a WM managed warehouse, society A;
    - a HU managed warehouse (without WM), society B;
    - a purchasing process of HU from society A towards society B.
    Society B have a scheduling agreement; when a delivery schedule appears, in society A born a sales order and a delivery. After the registration of the delivery good issue, an idoc transfer information for inbound delivery creation.
    This process is ok without WM, but with a WM managed warehouse the idoc has the following problem:
    "V51VP - item was not found - process cancelled".
    Can you help me to transfer these HU?

  • Text flow around objects such as giraffe neck in sample

    Hi
    I am new here. I bought pages yesterday. Awesome app. On the example pages there is a giraffe and the text flows around it's neck. When I tried to do something similar the text only flows around the whole square image imported regardless of white space. How do you get text to flow around non square objects.
    In the getting started there is a butterfly and the golden viewer. In those cases the text also flows around the non square shape of these objects
    Do you need an app to cut out such objects and paste them direct into pages?
    Or in other words : how did they get the text to flow around giraffe neck?
    Thanks a mil

  • Text Flow around objects

    I have a two-column book with photographs/diagrams of different sizes. On occasions where these extend into the second column, the text flow is often uneven across the two columns. I can get the text in the right hand column to move down, but not the left to move up. (page 11) Sometimes the same sort of thing applies with the photo just in one column - the left and right text blocks don't line up. It's probably something simple I am missing, but what?
    Another issue on similar lines concerns any box/photo/line/object I put in place. When I started with the program, I experimented a little with the Text Wrap settings. Somehow these became accepted as default, and every new line/box etc comes in with these settings I then have to alter. How do I change these default settings? I have re-set it any number of times, it still comes back to my first experimental values.
    I am using CS6 InDesign on an i-Mac with OSX 10.6.8.
    Thanks, Les

    Yeah, container may not be the best word to describe a book, which is why I put it in quotes, and I certainly didn't mean to imply that you can no longer open and edit the files outside the book. Doing that, however, means next time you open the book ID will complain and ask you to update things. No big deal, but if you open through the book panel it will save the changes through the book and that won't happen. No difference to the inidividual files.
    Historically - as in *roff and other UNIX-based processing programs like xroff, nroff, etc - books that were published from multiple individual component files, were produced by the use of a "makefile." You'd need to create the makefile by typing the names of the component files in the book order, along withtheir specifications, such as starting page side, starting page number, etc. You'd save the makefile with a name to preserve all this information, then you'd run the "make" command-line command in which you'd name the makefile, and include arguments such as which printer, how many copies, even a job priority, to avoid unnecessarily hogging the network bandwidth and free the printer for higher-priority jobs. As GUI capable hardware and software progressed, command-line makefiles became GUI book files - still, basically lists of component files and processing instructions.
    One important value of book files that don't contain component files is that different book files can control the processing of the same component files in different ways, as well as produce books that use some of the same files and some different files - for different audiences, different product sets, etc. Yes, opening a book file may warn that component files have changed - a good warning to the user to pay attention - and they offer a way to update the collection of component files so that the book file produces the desired result. Here's where some folks may be surprised when they find that sometimes a print or export dialog box, either retains or forgets the settings used for the previous run; the result may be printing multiple copies instead of one, printing to a different printer than expected, or exporting a PDF that's not suitable for the desired printer.
    The short story is that while book processing lists that are separate from the component files offer flexibility and reusability, but they also require that the user pays attention.
    Did I commingle Autoflow and Smart Text Reflow in some way? I didn't think so.
    Not at all. I'm just extra-sensitive to my own experiences with not having taking pains to keep clear on the differences between these similar-sounding terms.
    My point was that HOW your text was put into the file to begin with, coupled with how your settings for STR are configured, is going to control whether subsequent editing triggers reflow. It's possible to have STR enabled and not have it work because you've limited it to master text frames and you haven't actually used any. An understanding of how autoflow works when placing text is important to being able to troubleshoot why STR is not behaving as expected (not to mention why text frames may not be adjusting if you edit the master page).
    One reason for the confusions that come from working with Smart Text Reflow is that there's no indication in the UI, that STR is enabled, and when it's enabled, there's no indication in the UI of which STR settings are in effect, except by seeing the behavior. Are pages added at the end or story, section, or document? You may see them added in the Pages panel, if it's open, on screen, and if the appropriate portion of the document is in view; you may see them added on screen if the appropriate portion of the document is on screen - the end of story, section, or document.
    In InDesign's Help, Smart Text Reflow is covered in only a few paragraphs. As you noted, there's much more to it.

  • Importing WORD text files with formatting and Text Flow issues IDCS3

    I am a designer who has used ID since it first came out, but have not been utilizing the larger document capabilities lately as I've been working in large format graphics (like really large, so if you have questions on that I can answer!). I am working on a new magazine and the copy is in WORD. I want to know the best way to bring in the text and keep the italic and bold formatting. The WORD docs have no style format done by the writers, so therefore changing the styles to my styles in the custom import section doesn't work. I tried making a character style sheet with no font chosen just "italics", but didn't work. I still was unable to make a paragraph style on top of it.
    If anyone has a good methodology for bringing in WORD text and keeping it's attributes while applying ID style sheets please help!
    Also with text flow, I have always had an issue with ID with not creating more pages to keep the flow going. In a test I just did I placed the text, but it did not create any new pages. I know there's a way to make that work, but spell it out for me like I'm a person losing their mind which seems to be the case!
    Thank you in advance to the person who can give me advice!

    What for settings do you have on the importoptions when bringing in Word? Keep formatting or loose formatting? And if loose formatting: is Keep local formatting on or off?

  • [JS CS3] How to detect text flow?

    Hello,
    Here is a fun problem: I have a series of scripts that checks for various errors in formatting of an ID file. The errors are tagged with XML tags. Very nicely, none of the scripts change the text, just record the errors. This includes that the scripts do not create any text flow, for instance, pushing words from the bottom of one page on to the top of the next page. However, once in a while I have discovered that the text does flow. I do not think the problem is in the scripts but in some instability in the file. Most of the time there is no flow.
    So, I would like to write a script that detects text flow. I do not expect anyone here to write it for me but I would like suggestions on the following scheme or if anyone has a better road to follow.
    1. Upon opening a file, a script would record the number of characters in the last text frame of any multi-text frame story. This would establish the original state of the file. Getting the number of characters in the last frame is easy, but the thing to ponder is how to record? A .txt document could be created that contains that information, but then how do I use it? Perhaps better is to record the info in variables written by the script itself.
    2. Anytime that the number of characters in the last text frame changes an alert would pop-up stating this. Perhaps a snippet of the first line of the last frame would be included in the alert to help the user find the problem (there could be several multi-frame stories in the document).
    I would like to be able to turn on and off the alert. While editing there will be of course text flow. But while merely checking I do not want text flow but do want to know when it inadvertently occurs.
    I know that such a script(s) would involve Event Listeners, something I have not used before.
    Any suggestions? I'm just looking for pointers before I start on the road of writing this.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Yeah, I know what you mean. The "invisible" XML markers aren't exactly perfectly invisible -- perhaps they mess with the n-th digit of precision when justifying text, or something like that.
    There still may be a minor flow between two successive text frames -- a single word that suddenly jumps to the next page, but paragraph spacing adjusts itself to keep the same number of lines.
    A good idea, though. You could look into storing the number of characters per frame into the frame itself, as a custom label.

  • Text flows create a delay when an overflow creates a new page, preventing you from reading the page number, giving error

    Hi all!
    I am creating a script to generate automatically a photo catalog; the idea is to prepare a master document with a text frame in the master spread with auto flowing, then insert images with their caption by the script, letting the system create automatically the subsequent pages when necessary by an unique flow of text.
    My catalog is divided in sections, each represented by a different master spread; so I have to know in which page I am working when the script put there an image, just to link the current page to the proper master spread.
    To simplify everything I have resumed the core of my script here, using text instead of images:
    /* load a master document, only containing an empty text frame in the master spread, connected to the main text flow */
    var doc = app.open(new File("~/Desktop/mySampleDoc.indd"));
    /* I work on the story, thinking that whenever the textframe of the first page will be full, another text frame will be created in the next page (automatically created) */
    var story = doc.pages[0].textFrames[0].parentStory;
    /* now I put some lines of text into the story, expecting the creation of a new page when the first one will be full */
    for (var i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
       /* this is next line: */
        story.insertionPoints[-1].contents = "this is line n. " + i + "\r";
        /* here I want to know on which page is the line just created (error is generated here just during the creation of the new page + text frame) */
        thisPage = story.insertionPoints[-1].parentTextFrames[0].parentPage.documentOffset;
       /* and now I print page number */
        story.insertionPoints.item(-1).contents = "current page: " + thisPage + "\r";
    The big problem is: when the first text frame is full and an overflow is generated, a new page with a new text frame belonging to the main text flow (as the master spread wants) is generated; but it seems my script requests the page number before the new page with the new text frame is born, and an error is given.
    It seems like the script goes too fast in respect to the creation of the new page.
    If I delete the line thisPage = story.insertionPoints[-1].parentTextFrames[0].parentPage.documentOffset; everything is ok.
    I tried to introduce a delay until 3 seconds without any effect.
    I tried also to show or zoom the new page before the page number request, thinking to force the system to wait until page is really born, also without any effect (by the way, I was not able to show the page during the script's additions of text!).
    Someone can help me?
    Many thanks to everyone
    Roberto

    Many thanks: you are right!
    Unfortunately, I am at the very beginning with ExtendScript, and there are so many things I don't know until now...
    With recompose() everything works very well, and it give me a solution also for redrawing the page while the script is working...
    Many thanks, again!

  • Problem with Pages text flow

    In a 'Pages' long document the text flow is not consistent despite the settings in the Inspector being identical. On some facing pages the last line does not justify, on others the text refuses to fill large gaps that seem to occur at random.

    No Gremlins, just your settings.
    Prevent widow and orphans will haul lines over onto subsequent pages leaving gaps where necessary. If you don't want that then uncheck it. You understand what those terms mean?
    Language applies to selected text just like bolding, fonts, color etc. If you are copying and pasting material from elsewhere such as the Internet they will have their own langauge or none. The default language is whatever you have set it in System Preferences.
    Paragraph Styles will stay what they were in the document or what they were when you pasted them into the document. Use Paste and Match Style if you want it to conform to the style of where you are pasting it.
    It is possible for a paragraph of text to have mixed styles due to author's changes. To force apply a style to text, double click it in the Styles Drawer.
