Text from Word that IDCS4 can't capture (Setting poetry...)

I am designing some books on poetry and the autho indented to the right some words.
Many lines are normal (from the left edge) but others are aligned to the right side.
This text arrives from Word with the indents but no style is present at all.
The «normal» lines show  0 values in the fields (0 left indent, o first line indent, etc)
The special lines always are showing a first line indent between 50-70 mm (they change in each poem)
If I apply an style all the formatting get lost.
And I can not look the indented lines by find/change because ALL the values are changing.
But these special lines are tagged in some way. They are the only ones who are indented.
I would like to characterize these ones.
It is possible?

Instead of fighting against it after an hour I adopted the same identity but with a new log.
Of course, I lost my little red square that was like the red button in the Legion d' Honneur
Yes. My post yesterday was a little difussed. I wanted to tag the indented lines but this may be as disastrous as having dozens of styles. Naïvely I was thinking how to translate the indents to tabs, but tab are also a paragraph element. At the end the disturbance is that text coming from can not get rightly styled in ID (appears as a «normal» style) and that is a problem to make adjustments lately.
Scripting is a superb mode but in this book I only have 40-50 lines with problems... Perhaps the hand made system is better. Anyway the conversion from Word sometimes does not match in Indesign (fonts, size, etc) and the only to preserve this special lines is changing their position (author must be consulted) or reduce the type size until all get fixed. In this case it is infamous to set all the book in a lesser type size just for the exceptions.
Thank you.

  • Can't create PDF from Word that retains links

I'm using Microsoft Word from Office Professional 2010, Version: 14.0.7116.5000 (64-bit) with Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1, and Adobe Acrobat X1 Standard 11.0.03.
Whenever I use a particular font (which is the main font I use for text, so I can't really use something else), and try to retain the links in the Word document, it never creates the PDF properly. For example, if I print to Adobe PDF, using many different settings, the font embeds properly but the hyperlinks are never retained (by "hyperlink" I mean the text in Word that is selected and has an underlying web link). I've tried many different Acrobat settings, and Word settings, but nothing seems to make it retain the links when I'm using Print to create the PDF.
But, if I use the Acrobat tab in Word, and the Create PDF button, the PDF will retain the links, but the main font I use (Mercury Text Fonts | Hoefler & Co.) is never embedded (despite all the settings I've tried), and instead that main roman font is replaced with a bold version of that font. NOTE: There are NOT license restrictions on the font, which is especially obvious since the bold versions of the font embed no matter what, and the regular roman version of the font embeds when I print to a PDF not using the Acrobat tab.
Of course, I have indeed used Acrobat's advanced settings to "always embed" the particular font, but it still won't embed.
How can I resolve this? I don't mind calling premium Acrobat support is such an option exists. Thank you.

93654User, I looked at the Hoefler website. It is not clear to me that their license allows for the embedding of fonts in pdfs: Create and modify Embedded Software Files, using the Permitted Computer(s). Licensee is also permitted to reproduce, distribute and display Non-Commercial Documents without obtaining an additional license. For clarity, except for Non-Commercial Documents, no right to reproduce, distribute or display any Embedded Software Files is granted by this license. In order to reproduce, distribute or display an Embedded Software File created pursuant to this Section that is not a Non-Commercial Document, Licensee must obtain a Software Distribution License, a Commercial Digital Publishing License, or another license as specified by Licensor. Please contact Licensor at [email protected] if you require these additional rights. All Embedded Software Files created pursuant to this subparagraph must comply with all of the following: I would contact the company to see if they allow licensing in pdfs. Also early versions of fonts from many years ago had a non-embed font flag improperly set. The only way you can be sure what is happening with this font is to contact its maker.

  • I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?

I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?
Whenever I copy/paste from web or Word it removes the hyperlinks.  And when I try to do it by "Place"ing a Word document into my InDesign project it keeps the formatting with it, the rectangles around the text.
I have the latest version of InDesign.
    Any help is appreciated.

Copy-and-paste may not include formatting. A regular import using Place is the best way.
The rectangles around the hyperlinks are just to indicate they are links -- they do not print, but they do show up in your PDF.
You can remove them by double-clicking the hyperlink in the Hyperlinks panel and select "Invisible Rectangle" as type.
Typically, Word hyperlinks are formatted -- blue text, underline -- with a Character Style. If you want to remove or change the formatting, all you have to do is change the character style. My experience, though, is you must check all hyperlinks because for no apparent reason sometimes they appear in the document without the character style.

Your line breaks will most likely be incorrect if you don't turn on the Japanese Composer.
It is almost absolutely impossible to accomplish your goal without having a font - any font - installed on your system that has that glyph. However, if it's showing up in Word, than means that you must have that glyph installed, right? What font are you trying to use in InDesign? You might already know that Word will auto-substitute fonts when it encounters a missing glyph, so we really don't know what font is being used to render that one glyph. The whole sentence might be in MS Mincho but one glyph might be pulled from another font if MS Mincho doesn't have that glyph.
That being said, you're going to break it if you don't know how to set Japanese type in ID. It's not something where you can just copy text out of email and paste into your English layout.

  • Copy text from Word '03 into RH9

I need to copy text from Word into RH in a way that does not bring in the Word codes.  I can obviously copy the text into notepad and then into RH, but I am wondering if there is a way to do it that would be similar to the "Paste Special / Unformatted Text" command in Word?
We cannot have the word codes in RH because we translate our user manuals and then use the translated UM text to gain discounts when we translated the html help files.  These codes throw off the matching and cause us to gain hardly any discounts.  Even simple formatting, like a bolded word puts in the word codes into the html code. I made the mistake of thinking if I unbold the word in RH then everything is fine, but little did I know the Word code was still in the HTML.
    I appreciate your help.
Also, I am open to suggestions on a better way to get my Word text into RH to be help.  I've started looking into Importing and Linking, but haven't figured out if they would be all that beneficial to us.

  • Auotmating Text from Word into InDesign

Here is my situation: I am the graphic artist and layout person for the company that I work for.  We produce layouts that have a pretty consistent format.   Each layout has definite text sections.  These text sections are written by the research editor and put into a single word document.  I then have to copy and past the various text sections into the layout in InDesign.
I know that if my Research Editors worked in InCopy it would elminate the need for me to copy and paste the text from word doc into the the layout document.  The problem is that one of the editors is a contract worker that is outside the office.
I was wondering if there was some way to set up a template in word.  The idea would be that once the document is finished it could be imported into InDesign in a way that it would automatically populate the the text sections in the layout.

Well you know what I mean, by copy and paste.  I place the text in first to preserve the formatting.
This seems backwards, to me. Is the "formatting" in the Word document based on styles? If it is, you can map your InDesign styles to your Word styles on import. If it's not, then I find it much faster to change the formatting into styles immediately upon import.
If you're not using any defined styles at all in your InDesign document, then yeah, I guess that copying and pasting is faster and a better way to preserve the manually applied formatting in Word. But why do that, when using well-defined styles in ID can be significantly faster?

  • How to link text from Word?

How can I link the text from Word to InDesign? Is it merely to link the entire document, or can I link the same document multiple times? This is because I want to add pictures and graphs between the lines.

File > Place.... and select the document. You might want to show import options as you do this. It will import as editable text that you can manipulate in just about any way you like. Ordinarily this text is not linked back to the original file, so subsequent editing in the Word file will not be refelcted in ID, but you can set your preferences before importing to Create Links to Text and Spreadsheet files (under File Handling) if you want to be able to update to any changes (editing and formatting you do in ID will be lost when you update, however). This option can be turned on or off as desired to link some files, but not others.
If you wish to, you can place the same file multiple times, but there may be simpler ways to get multiple copies, so more details about waht you need to do might help.

  • Freeze when copy paste text from word to Indesign CC

    Hi,
I have a problem when working with indesign CC. When i'm copying text from word to Indesign, after a while my windows system freezes. Only Indesign works. Windows and word are frozen. After a while (several minutes) the system works agian.
This problem occurs sinc I have Indesign CC.
Windows 8, indesign CC, Word 2013
I hope someone has a solution.
    Ragards Bas

    It's the PDF.
Usually, you can copy text out of a PDF, but there is no guarantee *at all*. Older software used to take shortcuts to subset fonts: first character it encountered got coded as #1, the next as #2, etc. etc. If you do a search & replace of each of the nonsense characters, you'll slowly see the original text appearing (thst's not as simple as it sounds, though).
A similar "problem" is that sometimes spaces don't get copied (there is no need for a "Space Character" in a PDF), and that you cannot copy contiguous lines of text as a single paragraph. All of it is because a PDF is not intended nor designed to be re-used after creation.
If you really need this text and don't want to type it in, try to get hold of the original file.

  • I need to create a PDF from InDesign that people can edit in Reader or Acrobat

I need to create a PDF from InDesign that people can edit (for example, change a name from "John" to "Johnny") from either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. I have already looked at forms, but they do not keep your font colors, faces, and sizes and just make everything that is selected as a text form Black, 12pt, Times New Roman.
    Can anyone here help me?

    Vincent,
If you use Acrobat pro, generate your .pdf file and then save it as (french version):
... so that anyone using Acrobat Reader (or Pro, of course) can modify the .pdf file (with limitations), add comments, ...
If you want to try to "protect" your .pdf file, you can try with this (in the "Préférences" menu (french version)):

  • Pasting text from word replaces Keynote styles

I get documents that are styled in Word that I have to convert to Keynote. Even though my text boxes are styled in the Master Slides, when I copy and paste text from word it comes in with all of word's formatting and disregard's Keynote's styling for that text box. I tried to convert the word docs to rtf or just plain text, but the text just imports without Keynote's styling applied to it. It would be very tedious to have to style each text box as I bring it in to Keynote. Does anyone have any suggestions to make the workflow less painful?
    Thanks

I don't have Omni Outliner to test with, but that does sound like something that's worth looking into. Send feedback to Omni at their site and to Apple with this link.

  • Problems with text from Word, even WordPad - erased spaces  :(

    Hi
I have Director 11 and I think this is my last project with it, so I don't consider an upgrade to 11.5 since I don't see any future.
I have a serious issue when I paste text from Word or even Wordpad. Sometimes it erases spaces between words.
I want to keep some formating because I have a lot of text so pasting from Notepad it's excluded.... too much work
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Director 11 was a pathetic, miserable thing.  Director 11.5 fixed many (not all, but many) of the problems introduced in D11, including a great deal of the text related issues that came with the new text engine.  I do not know if D11.5 will work better in your specific instance, but it is useable.  In my opinion, D11 is not usable, and never should have been released to the world.
Anyway, I would recommend that you download the free trial version of D11.5 and see if it works better.  Beware though, that you need to do it on another machine that does not have D11 licensed on it.  It will probably overwrite the D11 installation, so you do not want to do that if you do not plan on purchasing D11.5.

  • How to import text from Word and retain italics and/or indented text?

Is it possible to import or copy text from Word into InDesign and retain italics or text that is indented in the Word version?

    just wanna edit wrote:
Thank you, I think I understand the idea of "place" (which is what I would call "paste")
The two are not at all the same. Paste involves copying text to the clipboard and then pasting from the clipboard. Place is an import operation.

I am unable to copy text from Word (for Mac) into Safari. It doesn't seem to be recognizing that I am copying a selection of text from a word document. As when I try to paste, nothing happens. Is there a way around this?

Disregard question, found it. Right click, or Ctrl+click to use submenu to Copy.

  • Pasting Text from Word to InDesign (need preserve selected formatting)

When I import text from Word to Indesign I want to preserve the Italic and semi-bold but nothing else.
The Indesign document has a template set up with ipsum text styled with semi-bold and normal text as well as a character style for the italic.
When I paste the text into InDesign I want the ital and semi-bold to translate into the already styled text frame with no other formatting from Word.
As there will be hundreds of text frames like this I want the ital etc to automatically translate. I also need to paste text over these templated text frames (see attached.
    Cheers,

Use File > Place and check the import options instead of Copy/Paste.
