Text has ragged edges

Question

I'm new to Illustrator and just learning.
I 've always heard that if you create a logo in Ai you will see nice clean lines, no jagged or blurry edges.
I've just created a plain text logo, with a line drawing for the web.
I saved it to web and devices as a png.
How come when I zoom in on the logo, or if I enlarge it, the text gets all jagged?
The drawn line is nice and clean, but the text is not.
Why is this?

In order to get the nicest look, you should tick Anti-Alias when you save as PNG (in the Save for Web & Devices, I believe it is still hidden away in the Image Size Window; for non rectangular images, you should also use tick Transparency).
This will create colour transition pixels which will blend in and soften especially what would otherwise be stepwise slanting transitions.
PNG is superior to GIF in this respect; there is an issue with IE (Internet Explorer) older than 7.
There is a javascript fix for IE 6 and 5.5 called pngfix.js, which  you may use as follows (to reach users with even older IE versions, GIF  is the only option):
In the Head section, you may include this:

<![endif]-->
And then in the same folder as the site include the pngfix.js file attached here:
