Text knockout CS4 - white text on black urgent

I am having problems with some white text (converted to paths) which is placed on a black background.. When viewing the pdf in Illustrator (CS4), the text shows up fine. When viewing in Acrobat (which the printers will print from), the white text has disappeared. This only applies to some of the text  the rest is fine.  I need to set the white text not to overprint, but in the attributes box it isnt giving me the option to uncheck 'overprint'. Its grayed out. Where can I do this?
many thanks!

I don't think that's case, Peter. It looks the OP violated Dov Isaacs' first rule of PDF: Thou shalt not utilize Illustrator as a general purpose PDF editor.
The text, if I'm right was converted in ID.
If I'm wrong...well, nevermind.

This is my first time using this site, but it's helpful so far. Not sure if I need to retype the wording in the Discussion box above, but will do so just in case.

The simplest thing to try is a reset.
With Safari running, click on Safari in the menu bar and select Reset Safari ....
If that does not work, go to Safari / Preferences / Advanced.
The selections I have are shown here:

I find both their examples -- the hard white on hard black
    'villain' and hard
black on hard white 'hero' decidedly hard on the eyes. In
    both cases a lower
    contrast range would help.
(As I write this, I realise that the whole subject is
    extremely subjective, and
depends on all sorts of factors. For example the screen I am
    currently using
has black text on a white background, but the text is only
    one pixel wide, and
this seems quite acceptable, whereas heavier text would be
    less acceptable.)
This is a question I am wrestling with the moment. For
    example, in a photo
    album (eg:
    http://www.corybas.com/Gen_page.php?new=1
) I, and most of the people
I have spoken to, prefer a dark background, as it seems to
    show the photos off
    better.
On the other hand for general information (eg:
    http://www.cybec.com.au/ ) dark
text on a light background seems much better. It is easier on
    the eyes, and it
permits you to use a wider range of text colours to
    distinguish between
    different sections.
The problem comes when you start mixing information pages and
    photos on the same
web site. I think I will probably split the site into two
    general sections, and
colour them accordingly, but it is a visual shock when you
    switch from one
    colour scheme to the other.
I would be interested to hear your opinions on this. If you
    would like to
experiment, on the Corybas web site you can use 'Custom
    options' from the main
album index to switch between four alternative colour
    schemes.

  • Change Background to White & Text To Black

    Hello,
I am trying to use FCP7 to change my background to white (rather than black) and my text to white.
I used View -> Background -> White and then changed my text colour to white.
Everything seems fine in my timeline, and is rendered.
But when I go to Export video, the export has a blackbackground and no text.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Marc

Thanks Nick, I asked a friend about Color Matte. You were right. The next step is chose Color Solid then change that color from blue to white. Then add a new track and insert slug with the white color matte and all is good! Thanks!

  • In PSE 12 how can I change my watermark label eg colour of text from black to white etc

I have created a watermark to use in batch processing from RAW to jpg but I don't like the watermark and want to change some elements eg change the text from black to white but every time I change it, PSE changes it back to black - how do I fix this?

This isn't Lion-specific. I had the same prob changing OS a couple of years ago and now again changing to Lion on a new laptop.
Changing the Date and Time settings would do it (you'd think) but it doesn't. It was always embedded in International (now Language &Text). It seems to be a bug though as I've Custom Edited selecting 12-hr clock with am/pm and have the same issue. On-the-hour has no am/pm or zeros.
I've learnt not to waste too much energy on it once it doesn't make logical sense as it's generally a bug.
I'm loving Lion though - even unexpectedly using the natural scrolling.....but I digress....

  • Help me choose the right black for a background (white text on black BG)!

    Hi all!
I am polishing an InDesign document for a magazine. The cover will contain a big black surface with white texts on top (alongside a white surface with black texts/graphics on top and there is also a color bar on top of the black surface.)
I was warned that standard black will not work for the black background and I was advised to produce a 'cyan black' or a '4 colour black' instead.
The cover of the magazine will most likely be like a book cover: fairly thick white cardboard/paper with a coated job.
What exact color choice would you recommend knowing that the text color will be 'paper white'.
I now have this Pantone Black C (from the Pantone solid coated library): would it be good for this job? And what about the other black text and graphic elements on the white surface? Should they be from the same black?
I was hoping for the most straight forward and saff answere to this question as soon as  possible.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!
    Best.
    Nic

    I agree with Bob.
Generally, I do ask the printer. But usually I set up a rich black with 50% cyan and 100% black.
Adding more than Cyan to the Black can cause misregisteration issues, usually I stick to a 2 colour build for the Rich Black when knocking out White Text.
If your printer suggests differently then use what they have asked.
A few general rules of thumb:
Don't use thin serif fonts below 10pt - as the serifs have a chance of filling in.
Use a slightly bolder version of the font if one is available.
    Increase the kerning slightly.
Point size and and typeface is key to setting reversed out type. A font with thick hairlines will not break up as easily as one with thin hairlines. Italics tend to be problematic as in they can break up more easily than roman faces. Increasing the kerning here is vital as it prevents letters from joining up unintentionally.
When talking with the printers - let them know what type size and what font you're planning to use and if it will cause any issues with the print quality.

  • Reverse Type and Print Text as Black

I made a black box and on another layer I made the type "white" by choosing "paper". On screen it looked correct.
Then I did a preflight and chose "print text as black" because I thought the text in the rest of the doc looked better with that choice.
Problem: After printing, the text in the box came out black instead of white. What should I have done? I am using InDesign CS5 on Windows.

That’s what you asked for, isn’t it? Text as black means all of the text, not just some of it.
Now, before you get horribly frustrated I suggest taking a step back in your move to InDesign.
First, buy this book: http://amzn.to/ORQqtT ; Sandee Cohen’s Visual Quick Start Guide is the best beginner book on the market. It’s the best $20 you’ll ever spend.
Secondly, check out the video training on Lynda.com. Here’s a link for a one week free trial: http://bit.ly/fcGpiI

  • How to get clear small text on black background?

    hi,
I'm trying to get some clear small text on black, in the letterboxed area below some video. I've been trying 14pt, with a bit of tracking, using Arial, Helvetica, Skia, and Lucida Grande. They all look clear enough when rendered out to QT, but on my production monitor they dont look good. When I compress it for DVD (using very high bit rate settings) they really fall apart.
I even tried making the text in After Effects, which is what I do with my subtitles, but those are larger (about 24points) and for some reason the small text generated in After Effects looked worse than the native FCP text.
Does anyone have suggestions for the best combination of font and point size to give me clear small text for a black background? I dont mind going up a few point sizes.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you....

    Hi all,
Many thanks for all the suggestions.
I wound up using Helvetica 18pt, white set at 85%, and applied stib's de-interlacer (http://www.pureandapplied.com.au/plugins.html).
I tried Guassian Blur set to 0.1 but that made it less clear and didn't really help with the flicker. I also made sure to set the position to an even numbered line (I'm using uncompressed)
When I tried Helevetic 17pt, the "a" and the "e" both fell apart towards the top of the letter making them hard to read. I would guess that "g", "i", and "j" would also have problems had I used them.
I didnt have enough time to test, but I wonder if there isnt some font that is better suited for this kind of work than Helvetica. Futura is nice and clean, but a bit thin. Helvetica Neue is also good, but not much differnet than Helvetica. Verdana and Lucida Grande might also be good choice. What do you all use?
    thanks again...

  • Printing All text as black

    Hi,
I don't know if it's Mac or it's HP but I would appreciate to have the possibility to define the printing preferences for my HP printer (LaserJet M1132 MFP) as I can do it in Windows. Would there be a trick to print all text as black?

File > Print then select Black & White.
That will print all text in black.

  • [SOLVED] pacman-color base text is black

I would like the 'base' text (normal stuff, like the text telling you repos are up to date) in pacman-color to be grey, as I am going to be using a terminal emulator with a black background. Unfortunately, pacman-color seems bent on using a black font for its text. I can change most colors in /etc/pacman.d/color.conf, but not that. I tried adding a new line, 'Black = white' or similar, but it complains it doesn't know 'Black'.
    Any help? Thanks!

    Doesn't work
EDIT: Got it working, but I have no clue how. Just randomly started. Go figure. In case someone else comes along with the same problem, I think the fix happened when editing my .Xdefaults... here's part of mine to try and see if something fixes it.

  • Why Adobe Acrobat is not recognizing text on black backgrounds

I was surprised when I first discovered this. I thought Adobe was supposed to have the best OCR software in in the world, I tested in on few backgrounds, white text on black background - not working, yellow text on black background - not working..
I was disappointed, I had to use onlineocr, which did better job than Adobe Acrobat, it discovered all kinds of texts, bold fonts, text on multi-colored background - things that Acrobat OCR couldn't recognize..

    Hi Anubha,
    Thanks for your help.
In Finder ...... > Twain Data Sources I found two files, "Canon MP980 series Network.ds" (1.9Mb) and "Canon MP980 series.ds" (2Mb). Next to Kind for both it says "Application". I don´t see the word "Package" or "PowerPC" or "Universal". However, under Where, it says "Macintosh HD>Library>Image Capture>TWAIN Data Source. This is also the same information I find on my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.10.3), but still running Acrobat CC (not upgraded yet, thankfully). I can still scan using my MBP.
I was able to scan using Image Capture.
I did not have time to go through the procedure of logging in as root user.
Frankly, this seems way to complicated. There has to be an easier fix to the problem.
I also checked Canon´s website for updated driver files, but there are none for Yosemite.

  • "Sliding Panel" title text remains black

I don't know why, using a "Sliding Panel" title, if I change the face color nothing happens... the text remains black. I'd like to make it white, but there's no way to do it, here. Even opening it in Motion, I set white color for text face, but it remains black....

You could open a copy in Motion, disable the Title layer and add a text layer and a fade in/fade out behavior. Remember to make the new text a published parameter.
    Good luck

  • Text put into a canvas element with context.fillText() always has a black box where each letter goes. If the text is black you just see the black rectangle. If the text is not black you see it on the black bounding box. Surely this is not right.

This has happened on the last few versions of firefox, as long as canvas has been supported. I see other people's screen shots from canvas tutorials, and the text always looks normal. On my system, any text put into a canvas element via context.fillText() will have a black bounding box for each letter, sized appropriately for the letter. If the text is black, of course you only see rectangles. If the text is a contrasting color, then you can read it, but it looks bizarre.

    Thomas...same kind of crap here.
I used Custom Text - entered a sentence, hit return, entered another.
    Set to 72 pt.
The default alignment is centred - I want left aligned text...the text start point stays at the centre of frame and the sentence runs off the edge of the bounding box.
There is no settings in the Text or Title inspector dialog to correct that!
Using Transform will not sort it!

  • Disable text as black

When I export my book to PDF some text in some documents prints as low resolution dark black. My documents in InDesign show no sign of this. I read that "disable text as black" could be a potential solution. Where would I find this option -- I don't see it in my output choices. I'm an extreme newbie -- please keep it simple.Thanks.

I think we are going to need a lot more information, and maybe some screen shots.
Text as Black is an option you must select, not on bey default, and it is there for when you are printing a document with colored text to a monochrome printer so you get readable solid black text. Text that is colored 100%K only is not as dark in print as text that also has CMY mixed with it. If you are printing color document to a monochrome printer you should set your Appearance of Black settings in the preferences to Output All Blacks as Rich Black or 100K will print as a dark gray (somewhere in low to mid 90% black range) because the 100% black output is used for darker rich black objects.
