Text messages being discarded

Every so often my phone will display a text message on a black background, not all of the text fits on the screen and there is a "dismiss" button - nothing else. No name of who it's from, nothing. When I hit dismiss the message disappears and cannot be seen in the SMS application.
Anyone have any idea what's going on? I very much doubt I'm near the 75000 message limit if that helps!

This is a different type of SMS. Far more popular in the Europe and Middle East I forget the exact term for it as the US really doesn't mess with them. They allow a person to force an SMS upon another and immediatly show it overriding phone options. The iPhone happens to accept them (as I believe all phones have to, though not all have to be able to send). India is big on this SMS type and the problem with them is 1, they can be spoofed (they actually have services that let you enter any number or name you want to say it is from), then they show up in a non traditional way. Some people have been sending out "Your phone has been hacked" msgs I read recently. And since it shows up not as a normal SMS people think they really have, though in the end, it was just this special type of SMS. Talk to your friends, they are doing it to you.

Just to be clear, while you have to use an Apple ID for iMessage and FaceTime, you should not be using that e-mail address to receive at or send from since you're using your father's ID.  Later in your post it sounds like you de-selected e-mail addresses that were not yours, which is correct, but I wanted to make sure you understand that you should not be using this ID for a contact point since it is not yours.
If your father is still getting your text messages from your friends, I suspect that either:
    (a) after making these changes you need to turn iMessage and FaceTime off for a brief period, then turn back on, or
    (b) your friends are replying to older messages that you sent from your father's Apple ID, or
    (c) your father's iPhone somehow has your e-mail entered as one of the possible contact points for his iPhone.
If the cause is (a) turn iMessage and FaceTime back on since you've already turned them off.
If the cause is (b) see the last paragraph of my 1st post.  Send your friends a new iMessage and tell them to only reply to that conversation and delete prior conversations.
If the cause is (b) have your father de-select (or remove) your e-mail address from his iMessage and FaceTime settings.

  • Why are my group text messages being sent as pictures

My group text messages are being sent as pictures or images and I don't know why. It just started happening, I've sent them before without to the same people without this happening. I can sent text messages to each person individualy and they are delivered as text. Is there some setting I can change?

HI. I had the same thing the other day. I sent a link to 40 people and got charged for 40 picture messages. I phoned my network provider and they said it is an apple fault (iphone).
If you send a group 'Text' to more than 6 people, the iphone somehow marks it as a MMS or picture message. I get free texts and was shocked to be charged, but they did look into my messages and could see it was not an image and refunded me.
If they are right, its an apple problem. Can anyone shed sme light on this?

  • Why are text messages being received as gmail addresses?

In the last week, I began receiving text messages from my friends that are being sent from their "gmail" address.  Therefore, it seems to replace the other contact that I had in the phone.  Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you

This has worked for many to solve this problem:
Open the phone and dial *228. This is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.
When the system answer press 1 for "Program or activate your phone"
Wait for the call to disconnect. You should get a prompt stating "Settings updated."
Double tap the Home button to bring up the recently used apps list at the bottom.  Locate the Phone, Message, and Contacts apps, swiping if necessary, and press and hold until they jiggle then press the red minus sign to stop them.
    Wait a 3-5 minutes.
Open the Message App to see if they're fixed.

  • Why are some of my iMessage text messages being received sporadically by my father

I've searched high and low, but couldn't find any information regarding this particular issue, so if you know of a link in the discussions please show me.  Today my father received 2 texts from 2 seperate numbers by friends of mine.  This is troubling, and isn't the first time.  I am using an iPhone 4 fully updated to 7.0.4. I recently noticed that I was no longer sending messages as an iMessage (blue text color) so I investigated the issue within the settings function and didn't really see any differences there with the exception of the Apple ID.  I've always used my father's Apple ID and only once has this happened, the only difference was that I was receiving his messages from people in his contacts.  It is also important to mention that my carrier is Verizon and that we are on a family shared account with 4 members.  I don't think that any of the other members have ever received any of my texts, but then again I don't know if they are using just one Apple ID (I think they have there own personal IDs).  So it comes to this, do I need my own personal Apple ID?  If that is the case why do they offer the option of selecting what numbers or email addresses to choose to have my texts sent to?  Also in order for me to open an Apple ID I must be the owner of a credit card which I do not use nor do I have, not even a debit/credit card.  Anyway, that's it.  I don't need my personal life spilled into my father's life, we all have enough problems of our own!   Ciao and thanks for any and all help.

  • Text messages being sent in MIME format?

i currently receive work pages as text messages on my iphone 3gs. our system generates these pages as emails to [phone number]@mms.att.net. the person supporting this system reports that when i accept ownership for a given page (this is an on-call rotation) the message format is MIME...it needs to be plain text. these issues began after my upgrade to the latest iOS - 4.2.1.
    any ideas?

When you go to Messages > New message a list of all possible contacts from the same person appears, in blue when supporting iMessages, green for texts and grey to non available phones/mails.
Make sure you select the correct one when creating a new message.

  • Anyone have a problem sending text messages being delivered after few minutes up to five minutes?

Has anyone have a problem sending text messages and the messages won't get delivered after few minutes? From time to time I would have this problem and it's annoying.  I would expect someone to receive it by then and response to my text right away.  But when I look up the text it hasn't been delivered and it's in the process.  I would hear that the message get delivered after few minutes? What gives? I never had a problem with my iphone 4 i think? Now with iOS 5 it let's me know whether it is delivered or not.  This new feature is awesome but disappointing when I know my text hasn't been delivered right away.  I'm not sure if it's the software or my iphone 4s or my carrier? anyone suggestions?  Thanks!!

I have the same problem when sending iMessages.. Wasnt sure if it was apple or Sprint? But it happens VERY often and I end up having to send it as a text message instead

  • On a multiple member Icloud account, do I need to worry about my text messages being restored to one of the other phones?

I have a multi family icloud acct.  i am concerned that my chat records can be recovered by someone else on the account.  is that a valid concern?

Your text messages are only stored in your iCloud backup.  Someone else would need to restore your backup to their device in order to access them.
But you should be sure that everyone is using a separate Apple ID for iMessage on their devices to prevent you from seeing each others messages on your devices.  (This has nothing to do with iCloud.)

You are signed in with the same Apple ID.

  • Why are my text messages being sent from my e-mail?

Just recently  I reset the password to my apple ID and ever since it has been sending text messages through my e-mail. I will open my text messaging app but my friends are still telling my i am texting them through my email. I tried lookinng under my measaging settings and for my icloud it had my email selected and it would  not let me select my phone number.

    Hey Bgrossman,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you are signed into your Apple ID (email address) in your iMessage settings:

To sign out of your Apple ID
    1. Go to Settings > FaceTime, tap your Apple ID, and select Sign Out.
    2. Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, tap your Apple ID, and select Sign Out.
    Thanks,
