Text not searchable & copiable within an inported pdf doc in FM

Hi all,
I am having an unique problem with FrameMaker 7.1!
There is a *.fm file and within it, I am importing by reference a pdf file.
The above imported pdf file was created from OpenOffice draw (contains some shapes and text).
After importing the above pdf into FM, I save the *.fm file and convert it to a pdf file.
In this final pdf, it is not possible to search for texts that is contained within imported pdf (drawings created with the OpenOffice and then converted to pdf)!
Why is this so......is there a work around?
Note : Texts withing pdf's created from MS-Office Word are however searchable in the final pdf created from FM file (imported by reference in the same way)!
Thanks in advance,
Debayan

hi
Error7103,
Is the text searchable and copiable in the original PDF before importing?
Ans> Yes, in the original pdf, the texts r searchable & copiable to a recognized text format!
But in the pdf created from the *.fm file, those texts are no longer searchable & copiable!
What options are you specifying when exporting it from OpenOffice?
The Security tab settings would be the first place to look.
Ans> Yes, I have taken a look into the "Security" tab of 'PDF Options' and there "Enable copying of content" &  "Enable text access....." has been checked!
Also in the 'General' tab, I have selected option "PDF/A-1" to be on the safer side (have also read the 'Help'), but all these don't solve my problem! :-(

  • Using Adobe X - is it possible to make text not searchable

I want the text to be visible, but not searchable by a search engine. Redacting would leave big blanks in the document. For example, there is some relevant information in an old newsletter and want the newsletter available on the website but don't want names of people searchable.  Is that possible?
    Thank you

The code library used by search engine spiders to index PDF files is not made public, but if there's character-based text in a PDF file, they can and will read it.
Converting the pages to images is not advised for numerous reasons, and securing the PDF with a "file open" password defeats the object of putting it on the website, but you can use the ROBOTS.TXT system on your site to exclude certain files and folders from spider crawls (look on Google for instructions on what to do). The engines which currently scan PDFs respect the ROBOTS.TXT file instructions they find on a website.

  • Why is the text not the visible in the protected PDF opened on Mac?

    Long story short:
I've created a document in Microsoft Word 2010 and saved it as PDF. With the .pdf open now in Acrobat Reader 9.4.1 I have enabled the protection over the .pdf file by only allowing Printing and saved the protected .pdf. All of these actions are made on Windows 7 machine. Now when trying to open the protected .pdf on Mac (with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Preview) the .pdf opened only shows the lines and bullets but not the text.
Why is the text not visible in the protected PDF opened on Mac?
(is this bug or a "feature"?)
Note: the protected .pdf looks good on Windows 7 and it works on Mac if the .pdf has no protection.
    Thanks!

    A. What application are you using to add the protection? Reader cannot add any file security and I don't think the PDF feature of Word will either.
    B. Mac Preview has issues with PDF standards so there may be some features that you will experience issues with that have no workarounds.
    C. Have you checked the file after adding security to see if all fonts are embedded?

  • PDF ebook- text is searchable in Adobe reader but not ADE?!

I have a PDF ebook which has fully embedded fonts and internal hyperlinks, bookmarks and when viewed via Adobe reader is fully searchable. However when the same PDF is viewed in Adobe Digital Editions all navigational features remain but the text is not searchable?! This doesnt make sense- any help or advice would be grateful appreciated.

    Hi,
What i understood from "searchable" is "searching text in a PDF document" , am I right?
which version of Adobe Reader are you using ?
Please also share the PDF file in which you are facing the problem in searching with Adobe Reader.
    Thanks.

  • Why a pdf document with embedded fonts can be copied but is not searchable in pdf reader

I am writing a pdf files with embedded subset fonts. As required, I am including the ToUnicode and CIDSet objects. To test, I created a simple PDF with two Hebrew characters. I can select the two characters and copy to the clipboard, and paste it properly into another application such as Word. But I am not able to search for a word containing these two characters. Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) displays the message that the word was not found. So in essence, I have created a PDF document which can be copied properly, but is not searchable. Any idea what I might be missing when creating the document?
Additional information: 1. The file in question is a minimal file with just two characters. I have tested with many such files in many different languages including English. None of the files are searchable. 2. Curiously, if I search for the letter 'e', Adobe reader highlights an incorrect word, even if the letter 'e' does not exists in the file. 3. Adobe acrobat is also not able to search within this file, however when I save the file to another disk file, the saved file now is searchable. I confirmed that the major objects such as the font-file, ToUnicode object, CID object, and the font description objects are the same in the saved file. However, one of the font object is brought up closer to the top of the file. 4. FoxIt is able to search these files properly.

I figured the app might have that ability - considering you can add text, highlight, add a signature, annotate and draw - so my thought was why not delete a page, or rearrange for that matter?.. That should be an option, this way we don't have to export to one of the other apps to delete or rearrange..
    Thanks for the help, Bernd.
BTW if anyone is looking - PDF Max can do all of the above and delete and rearrange. With PDF Splicer you can delete and rearrange as well, but it has no other features.
And as for Steve Werner whose comment was deleted after it got to my inbox, it is much more than a Reader, as you can plainly see from the amount of tasks the Reader app can do above.

When I convert my pdf doc to word, the fonts go really weird and it also puts some text into boxes. when I try to select the text and change the font, it does not change it properly? This is making it impossible to amend.

    Hi Janedance1,
If the PDF that you converted already has searchable text, please try disabling OCR as described in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when converting PDF to Word or Excel. (If the PDF was created from a scanned document and doesn't already have searchable text, disabling OCR isn't a great option, as the text won't be searchable/editable in the converted Word doc.)
Please let us know how it goes.

  • PDF created using Java iText package - Text not editable and not displaying font properties on Acrobat

    Hi,
I have an issue in editing the text and viewing the font properties of a text region on a PDF created using Java iText package.
I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and the option Tools -> Advanced Editing -> TouchUp Text Tool.
The strange behaviour is that, I have 2 PDFs created out of the same base PDF and text added via Java iText package with the same Text, Font and other properties.
One of the PDF has the text region editable on Acrobat but the other one has the text region which is not editable.
But both the PDFs are editable via Adobe Illustrator.
I have attached both the PDFs for your reference
    PDF_Editable.pdf - Editable on Acrobat
    PDF_Not Editable.pdf - Not Editable on Acrobat
Any help or insight to find out the difference/issue with the PDF which is not editable via Acrobat would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

You don't have direct control of the leading of a multiline text field. A common approach is to control the background color of the field with JavaScript since the lines are not really needed when the field is used in Reader/Acrobat. They may be useful when using the form by hand. For more information, see the posts by Max in this topic: http://acrobatusers.com/forum/forms-acrobat/how-do-i-use-multi-lined-text-fields-over-prin ted-line-area-existing-form

  • Why is this simple PDF file not searchable?!? Someone please help!!

    Hi all!
I DESPERATELY need to figure out why this PDF file is not searchable, and how to fix it. It's from a teacher of mine at my university, and basically I want to be able to make all of the PDF's she gives out searchable since there is a lot of content. I'm running Adobe Reader 11, ver. 11.0.10, on an early 2014 Macbook Air running OS X Yosemite ver. 10.10.1. I've tried using the search function, the advanced search function, and I've looked for the option to turn OCR on (couldn't find it)....and none of these attempts have resolved the issue.
The weird thing about this is I've NEVER had a problem searching thru ANY PDF on this Mac -- including really, really complex lecture PDFs from other professors -- so I can't figure out why these are any different. Is it because this PDF was exported out of a Powerpoint presentation (I think)? Or something else? Does anyone have any ideas?
Lastly, I'm attaching a screenshot (below) so that if any of you give me any directions ("Look under the [such and such] toolbar"), you can see first exactly what I see.
THANKS guys for any input and consideration!

There are some issues with this PDF file.  It's not tagged but even still it has some real problems.  I checked the file to see what created it and it was something called "Wine Postscript Driver" and the PDF Producer was "GPL GhostScript 9.10"  When you check the file in Preflight then you will begin to understand that this is a poorly created PDF file.  Here is a bit of the PDF Syntax report:

  • Hyperlink text not complete when using Create PDF button in Word

    Hello -
I have Adobe Professional 9, and Microsoft office 2007. I'm trying to convert a word doc to a pdf using the Create PDF button but the resulting pdf always has incomplete hyperlinks. For instance, where it should say http://www.adobe.com, the output pdf will have : //www.adobe.com
When I hover over the link, the pop up label has the entire URL, and the links work, but I want the entire text to show. I've tried doing a repair with the install disc for adobe, but that didn't help. I've already checked the settings to ensure the Add Hyperlinks option is checked. I just did a complete uninstall/reinstall of all my Microsoft Office products and installed the service pack. I don't have this problem when I use the Create PDF button on my desktop computer, only when I use my laptop (Dell M4300). Any other suggestions?

I don't have my WORD 2007 on this machine. However, are you sure you are using the Adobe product and not the MS feature for creating the PDF? As for using PDF Maker, you should check the options/preferences in the Adobe menu. There should be a check box for conversion of links. Of course there is the question about whether the links are actually correct in WORD. The links only being partial is typical of the links not actually being transferred to the PDF, but simply Acrobat completing the link it thinks exists like WORD does.

  • Missing text, not all, in some .pdf files

I have just started to receive some .pdf files with photos on them and text. But there are places where there should be text and it does not show up when I receive. Others are able to view this particular .pdf I'm citing in its entirety. The person who sent to me often sends me .pdf graphics/text and until now I have not had a problem viewing his .pdf files. I have a current adobe reader file - not the paid version - and it is up to date. He is sending from his apple to my windows explorer. I don't know what to do here as it is important I receive these and I have no explanation?
Also this particular .pdf he had created to be a 1/2 page ad in a local newspaper, so I think he would have designed it to be larger? But again, I've had no trouble reading what he sends even one meant for a full page ad. Is there something I can do to correct this? I did Google and it seems others have run into this on occasion.

I'm going to try to imbed the adobe image of one of the files. I notice when I look on my desktop and the file image is there, it is small icon of course, but I can see the missing words clearly on it. But when I open it up, via the adobe reader, that is when spots are blank, but when I look very closely the words are really there but a very faded gray, to be not legible. And they are clearly there if I right click and highlight. These were two areas of course where he had made some changes.
I was not allowed to download and insert the image and it is an adobe image....it says
"The content image of this type is not allowed"   Interesting. It is merely an insert for fundraising - a small add (to be placed in energy invoices) for an animal group - small file. Also, remember I mentioned others could receive these two adobe files and had no problem reading those areas. It seems to be only me sad to say!

  • Some text not printing when printing from FM8 to Pdf

We have recently upgraded to Acrobat 9 and now have problems with some Helvetica text not showing up in the pdfs.  If we change the text to Arial it prints.  Changing/substituting Arial for Helvetica is not an option since these files are structure using modules built by a 3rd party.  This is obviously an issue with Framemaker8 and Acrobat 9 so my hopes are that someone else has had this issue and has a fix.

Thanks Art. Sorry, I looked through the forum and didn't see any Q&A on missing text in Pdfs.  We are on Windows XP working files from our desktop and our server.  Our normal method of producing pdfs is through File>Print using our minor customized pdf settings for screen viewing and hires printing (we've used these settings for years).  Since our upgrade to Acrobat 9 we are now using Distiller 9.2.0.124.  I've also found out since I first posted my question that we are not on the latest version of Framemaker8.  I will run the updates to get us to the latest version of 8 and see if that fixes what seems to be an incompatiblity issue between FM8 and Acrobat 9.  I say that because this problem started when we upgraded to Acrobat 9.  If that doesn't fix the problem, I'll get back to you to find out more about the Microsoft printer Hotfix.  Unless you know for a fact that FM8 is not compatible with Distiller 9.2.0.124, in that case we'll need to upgrade to FM9.

  • Why does some text convert to outlines when opening a PDF in AI?

I often have to open PDFs saved from InDesign CS5 in Illustrator CS5 (Mac). These PDFS are saved from InDesign using Press or PDFX1-a settings.
When I open them in AI, I get the warning that "to preserve appearance, some text has been outlined".
Of course, I do not want this to happen.
The text that gets outlined is nothing special. It is seemingly at random within a paragraph or within a cell of a table. In the screen shot below, live text has the blue underline; outlined text does not.
I can see no rationale for it. There is no transparency involved. Just black text on no background. There is no special "appearance" that needs to be preserved. Fonts are all Adobe OTF (Myriad Pro shown below).
Can anyone explain why this happens?

PDFs are not supposed to be edited as a rule.
Lots of odd things can happen to text (but also other objects) when you open a PDF - that is not a pdf with the editable Illustrator file saved within it - and try to edit it.
Illustrator is not a general purpose editor of pdf files.
PDF files are supposed to be an end-format, not a format that you edit.
What happens to text in a pdf when opened in Illustrator is perfectly normal. There isn't really much you can do about it except recreate the text in Illustrator from scratch, with the desired font, and re-export to the pdf-version you need.

  • SaveAs Text not capturing entire document

I am receiving PDF files from a customer.  I need to convert them to text files for import.  The first ones I got from them worked fine and the latest only convert some of the pages to text.  The PDF is of a purchase order.  The part that always converts to text is the legal text in the last few pages.  I have tried numerous ways of printing and exporting the information (creating new PDF from the PDF, save as Word file, VBA code, etc.) but have not had any luck.
I'm trying to see if I can get the creator of these PDF files (an outside client) to go back to the old way of creating them.  The people using these files are doing this on a daily basis and are not experts, so I can't ask them to go through a big process to save these as text files.  They'll just retype them, as they are doing now.
I examined the file properties and the only difference I could see was the ones that worked had the application listed as PScript5.dll Version 5.2.2, Tagged PDF = No, Fast Web View = Yes.  The ones that didn't work had values of Microsoft® Word 2010, Tagged PDF = Yes, Fast Web View = No.  The PDF Producer and Version were the same in all the files.  I'm not sure what would use PScript5.dll but another difference I found was that the title of the one using PScript5.dll was a Word document but the one that used Word as the application had a blank title.
I'm not sure if that's the pertinent to the issue, but it's all I could find.  I appreciate any wisdom you may be able to share.

Yes I can select any text.  The first object is a simple logo and everything after that is formatted text.  It selects within the PDF files identically.

  • How to change text in PDF doc. which is a musical score

    Hello,
I'm new here, so please excuse me if I do or say something I shouldn't.
I need to change the words in a musical score because the font is too small. OCR recognition doesn"t work because there are illustrations that are different from images or text... Is there a way to get in there and make the changes I need to do?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but I have Adobe Reader 9 Pro. Will it still not
