Text objects don't snap properly

Has anyone noticed that text objects (and in particular point text objects) don't snap properly to guides even if Type Object Selection by Path Only is checked in Preferences? I'm on CS2 but on older versions of Illy this was never a problem. The objects appear to snap, but when you zoom in you can see that the snap wasn't accurate and the text point didn't stop on the guide.
Neither does Average work for text points any more. Sure you can use Align, but this sometimes produces unexpected results because it seems to measure the type itself and not the points as you would normally expect. The same thing applies to Distribute Spacing. It produces unevenly spaced lines instead of distributing spaces between points or groups of points.
Has anyone got a method of aligning the points of text objects accurately? I always used to use Cmd+Alt+J (either vertical or horizontal) but there seems to be no way of doing this any more. Maybe it has been corrected in CS3, but it seems that there are so many bugs in CS3 that I don't think I want to go there.

It's been my experience with iDVD in iLife that it is only for basic, quick & easy dvd creations with some presentation. I currently use DVD Studio Pro by Apple and it gives you the option you are looking for commonly referred to as motion marker points. Anyway, I hope this helps.

You can't expect Mail to support all the objects of Pages which can include anything up to charts generated from spreadsheet tables.
Even if Mail was a superset of Pages, what would the recipients who don't have either Mail or Pages, make of it?

How can I align a text object by the visible text and NOT by its bounding box?

Illustrator CS4.
I am trying to align some text to the center of the artboard. The bounding box is bigger than the text, so when I try to align it to the artboard it doesn't actually center align the artwork as I need it to. The text is needing to be aligned with another text object, so I can't just center align the text and then align to the artboard (which would eliminate the bounding box problem, I think). To make matters worse, the text I want to align has a stroke.
The only way I know to currently align the text properly is to convert it to outlines. This is what I've done, but I need something better. I want to be able to have my illustrator file that has all editable text and then be able to make a separate identical file with all text converted to outlined paths. The only thing holding me back right now is that I can't get the exact alignment while everything is still as text.

The solution is to simple to believe and probably why you over looked it.
You make two text frames to exactly the height and width of the text. You position the text in the relative location and then group the text frames then center that group on the artboard.
Like such:
If you ever want to add text that should be no problem but you have to re center.

Text objects behave badly in 10.0.0.495

I don't believe what I'm seeing ;-) so want to ask if others
see this.
Adding a vector text object to the canvas should draw a box
whose position reflects where the text actually sits. In my
experience -- possibly after the updates that just arrived today to
make 10.0.0.495 -- the outline of the object and the text don't
always move precisely together: the outline box can appear
disconnected from the text.
Let's say I place several text objects using 14pt bold
verdana. I place an object then type some text. I repeat that three
or four times. Now I move some of those boxes vertically with the
mouse. Once I've done this for a while I might get an object whose
blue (or red) outline is drawn (in "full" view) *above* the text.
And when the width of a text box is just barely enough to contain
its text on one line, the text might be *on* the bottom border
rather than centered top to bottom *within* the border. Or the text
might be just so slightly too far right of the left border (as
though there were a space before the text). All of these
displacements can be "fixed" by widening the object.
The behavior is very annoying. FW this way is almost useless.
I'm using Windows the CS4. I don't believe I saw this behavior
until the recent updates. I am not a long-time FW user but am
accustomed to this type of software.

I posted this behavior to Adobe's feedback / bug mechanism
just after starting this thread. I had a good exchange with what
I'd guess is a QA person Thursday. I shared screen pics showing the
displacement between frame and text; they seem to accept this is
real. Switching on grids and snap to grid, then moving a text
object left and right repeatedly, is a way to reproduce the
behavior. But it takes some work. I've had no word since Saturday.
Toggling bold or some other attribute seems to snap the text
and frame back into sanity.

How to create a text object at runtime?

I need to create a text object in a specific section like section 2. and also I need to control the text object's position and text.
I tried to move a object like:

but object's position doesn't change at all.
How can I do these (create a text object and change a object postion)?

I have downloaded a RAS ( report application Server ) sample.
The sample uses the Business Objects Enterprise XI release 2. I am using win 7 and crystal reports for vs2010. Can I use this version of crystal reports to create a text object at runtime? If not, what is the lowest version I have to purchase to achieve what I want?
Basicly I need following capabilities at runtime:
1) craete text objects, line objects, image objects.
2) change text object, line object and image object positions, sizes, values of text object. If can I like to be able to change font as well.
3) supress objects, sections.
4) change section's height

Text Object with a Paramter Field in It

think I am losing my mind. I have a text object on my report for the 'From' and 'To' dates on a report. So that the spacing works between the words, I add a text object to my report and type the word "From" (without quotes). Then, I drag the start date into the field next to the word From. Then I type "To" and insert the ending date.
I right justify the contents of the field. I position the object on the right side of the report (not right at the margins about 1/4" in).
Just above this combined field, is a special field with the print date. It is also right justified and the two fields are right aligned.
The problem is when the report prints, the combined field isn't truly right justified. There are what appears to be extra spaces in it. The fields look similar to this...

They should be perfectly aligned based on the CR layout. I have done some testing. If I remove the text and just leave the dates in the text object, I have the same results. It looks like it has something to do with the brackets that get placed around the parameter field when it is placed inside the text object.

Has anyone else run across this? I have noticed this on several of my reports and decided to try and find a solution.
Could it be a variable font issue? The problem goes away if I use Lucida Console (a fixed width font). It is somewhat better but not perfect with Verdana as the font. It is horrible when using Arial. I can't believe this is an issue that others have not run across. I searched the forum with no luck.

With the help of one of our programmers, he suggested using a Trim function in case there were extra spaces in the field. So this is what I ended up doing.
Created a formula with the following:
"Report Range " + Trim (totext({?datdeb})) + " to " + Trim (totext({?datfin}))
?datedeb = beginning date parameter
?datefin = ending date parameter
By using the trim function, the extra spaces that were inserted into the field were removed.
Go figure! Oh well... At least there is a solution.

Help to get text objects in ABAP

Hi guys!
I've created my first report program and need some help to get text objects into the report. The program combines the tables KNA1, LIKP, LIPS, VBAK, VBAP and VBKD to create a deliverylist which we import as excel info a shipping service. The issue at hand is that our website allows customers to change the ship-to party's address when creating an order. The adress are not updated to KNA1, but are comitted as a text on the ship-to on the delivery itself.
The text I need in the report is RV50A-TXTWE.
Can you help me get going on how to add this from the delivery?

Your problem is that its a structure. Structures are filled in a program and no longer exist after the program is closed. They are temporary data. It will have been moved to tables somewhere most likely. The next step is to debug / trace through the code to find out what was done with it.
What program were you using that created the structure?

Ok, so I finally got it working but this is not ideal at all. Adobe really needs to give us some direction on how to properly deal with font embedding and TLF now that the release build breaks all functionality with loading runtime fonts and TLF.
Problem:
I am embedding collections of fonts (faces) into single family classes. Each individual face is registered with Font.registerFont(). I need to do this because I have to have mixed fonts within text flows - at least according to Alex H's recent blog post.
Fonts do not display in TLF without doing the following:
1. GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction = null;
2. editor.textFlow.flowComposer.swfContext = ISWFContext(this.getFontContext("AnyFamilyNameFromAnyFontEmbedded", false, false, FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF));
3. Instead of #2, use editor.textFlow.invalidateAllFormats();
Either #2 or #3 need to be performed. If I have a spark richEditableText control in MXML with defined familes from the loaded fonts. I even tried placing the control into a separate state so it wasn't created until after the fonts were loaded... I still needed to invalidate the formats or set the context.
The "AnyFamilyNameFromAnyFontEmbedded" does not need to be all of the embedded family names. It only needs to be one of them. Once one is used, all embedded fonts work. Also, I have to use the internal namespace to even get access to getFontContext, another oddity that, in my humble opinion, should never be necessary to create mixed style TLF content.
My questions are then:
1. Why am I required to use ISWFContext if I am using Font.registerFont()?
2. Why is GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction = null; also required for this to work?
3. What is the recommended workflow to embed fonts from multiple SWF files into the release build and have it work without having to jump through all these hoops?

How can I embed a text field inside a text object in a fillable form?

I am a new user of LiveCycle and am slowly figuring things out. I don't really understand any of the scripts-- thatlevel is way beyod me. I am hoping that someone can tell me an easy way to insert a fillable text field into a text object. I have been assigned a huge project of converting some very old Word forms into fillable PDF forms. I have done okay with many of them, but ran into a snag with some of the form letters that our employees need to fill out. Basically, there is a block of text (the body of the letter) in which employees will need to be able to type in a date that the recipient of the letter must respond by. I have read up on floating fields and thought that was the solution to my problem, but it seems that floating fields are really just meant to be filled from a data source rather than having info typed into them.
Can anyone help-- I am desperate at this point. There has to be an easy way to insert a fillable text field object or a Date/Time object into a block of text so that the surrounding text will expand and contract around the length of the date entered (this is important, as many of these letters pertain to legal matters and cannot have blank spaces in them).

You can split your text object into different parts and place text fields inbetween the parts. With a little manuvering, you can make it look good.
An alternative is to place text field(s) outside the letter body (and set the visibilaty to screen only). Use these to populate the floating field.
or
script the external text fields (or the subform containing them) to be "hidden" using the "Preprint" event, then revealing them ("visible") again using the "Postprint" event.

Make sure you have filled OBKEY.
OBJKEY must have the corresponding sort field for the values named below :-
1. QMEL - Notification header
2. QMFE - Notification item
3. QMUR - Notification cause
4. QMSM - Notification task
5. QMMA - Notification action
The combination of sort field of item/cause, item/task and item/action must be unique within a notification. If you leave the sort field empty and the OBJTYP = QME, then a long text is created for the notification header.

Please Help: Problem - Combining database fields in a text object

Thank you for viewing my thread and any helpful feedback you may provide. I am having trouble with the "Combining database fields in a text object" tutorial in the Help under: Quick Start\Quick Start for new users\Combining database fields in a text object.
After following the steps and previewing, I see the last name, first name stacked on top of each other in preview and design view. I don't know why this is happening. Can anyone point me in the right direction so the text is displayed the same way as it is in the Help?

Hi,
I don't think the field is actually in the text object but just stacked on top of it.
When you double-click on the text object, you the cursor should be inside it now. Is the database field in there? If not, then you can drag and drop it into the text object where you want it to go.
You will know if it's going in because the edit cursor will show you where in the text object it will drop.
The other way to do it is to drop the database field on the report somewhere and copy it to the clipboard and paste it into the text object.

Using EventListeners with classic Text objects

I have created 4 classic text objects and called them Butt1 thru Butt4.
This is so I can change the text in code from time to time.
I want to create an event listener to pick up when the user
a) mouses over Butt1, etc.
b) mouses out of Butt1, etc.
c) clicks on Butt1, etc.
In each case I will define a function to perform actions when the
button is moused over, moused out or clicked.
AddEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickHandler); does not seem to have parameters(as far as I can tell)
to point to Butt1, etc.
How is this done?
Probably an elementary issue, but befuddles me.

I get an error:
I'm just guessing at what the name should be but What Flash/Action Script really needs
is some way to see what methods are available for classic text fields.
I'm sure Flash has this feature but how do I get it.

Omit text objects from Excel export?

The Details section of my report contains data fields as well as some text objects (serving as labels - it doesn't have a horizontal, spreadsheet-style layout). I want to export the report's data to Excel, but I don't want the text objects. Is there a way I can omit them from the export?

A standard approach is to right click the details anbd select insert section below.
Now place the fields you DO want exported in the details B section.
Now create a boolean parameter such as "Export only?" and in the suppression for the details sections A and B code accordingly, as in:
{?Export only}
and in the Details B:
not({?Export only})
Now the fiedls required will be displayed/exported when you're exporting, otherwise it will display all of the fields.

Detecting TextAlignment in a Library based text Object

Hi All,
I have several text field objects that are shared (linked) to create a growing group text and button objects that are created at runtime. Oh, TLFtextField's are only being used, but that probably doesn't matter for the this set of issues.
I test the text as it is being filled in each text field to see if it overruns the field. Lots of layout and size variations.
I am inserting over 30 different languages into the text and will ultimately use RTL and BiDi (bi-directional) text. Some text is also center justified. Some text grows the text field too. I am automating this for testing and to help our translation service. We also have a translation database to reuse old phrases (but they may not fit new layouts).
So things that I need to detect are: Locale, Justification, Alignment, MultiLine, autoSize.direction, etc.The text Field will report x,y,w,h but not textFormatAlign (null) or direction (null - I believe from earlier tracing).
How can I extract the settings on these Library based text objects?
Do I have to expectedly set each feature that I have to text for when constructing the text instances I am placing on stage?
Would we classify the text object in the library as a 'Prototype' object? (to help me get my head around this and for others too) ?

I already solved the problem, correctly implementing the lines count function, forcing a pagebreak upon the correct count of lines. But I'll follow up just out of interest in another solution :o).
The formulae in the problematic part of report are as follows:
The text field itself is formula based. Upon a condition it draws data either from one source column or from another one. The difference here is that one of the columns' data is a single line, while the other is four lines (i.e. includes three CRLF chars). In both cases the text can also be empty or null.
The text field's Can grow and Keep together are both on, the may number of lines is 0 (= can grow infinitely).
The section containing the field is a group footer of group level 2, suppressed based on a formula detecting whether the text was already displayed in the group of group level 1 (the higher level). This is done by a variable which contains the group1 identifier for previous group2 data. If the previous and current group1ID are not equal (which means that the current group2 record is the first one in current group1), the text is displayed, otherwise it is suppressed.
Also, the section is suppressed if blank (= if the text data are empty or null).
Just FYI, the last problem of the linescount function was solved by merging the two section-suppressing condition into one.
