Text on television

when i burn my final project, my text is at 13 point and when it plays on my TV it is blurry, messy, pretty much unreadable. I know my TV is REALLY crappy (hooked up through Composite cable) but i was just wondering if there is some specifications on text size or is there some special trick to get it to look perfect? Some compression tips or maybe i'm not setting it up right.

I meant sans serif when I mentioned "chunky" - I'm from a graphics background so know all about such things but am never sure if most people necessarily know what serif and sans serif mean (I've worked with clients that have asked for big black bold bold fonts!!!!)

  • Scrolling and selecting text with a bluetooth mouse. (Possible bug?)

I currently have an Apple Keyboard and Magic Mouse hooked up to my Playbook. They work very well, the implementation is incredible. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to scroll with the the mouse. It really limits the PB since if I hook it up to my television I cannot scroll unless I have the PB near me. Has anyone gotten this to work or is this something we are hoping to get in a future update? Aslo, is there a way to select text and bring up the copy/paste menu without having to use the touch screen? I can select text by holding shift / arrow keys on the keyboard but am unable to perform any actions without having to use the touchscreen.
    Thanks!

Hold on there, @jnko -- are you saying you can scroll with the mouse (as in, use the virtual scroll wheel), or are you saying you can use the mouse to click on the document in, say, Word To Go, and drag it to make the screen scroll?  I can only do the latter, and, like you, can't scroll at all in the web browser.  Stinks that this wasn't fixed with the last update...

  • My iPhone 4's ringer or alerts, texts emails videos on YouTube or iPod won't play sounds however when I get a call the sound is loud an clear. I know it's not a problem with the speakers. It once said that it was connected to a tv when connected to dock.

Recently my iPhone 4's sounds are going haywire. I have a Jensen radio iPod dock that I hooked it up to earlier on in the week(first time too) and when it played a song, my iPhone said that this video was being played on a television. Since then the ringer(at times) along with my texts, you tube videos and iPod on my iPhone won't play music through the speakers. However sometimes my ringer comes through. Same as alarms. When I try to adjust the volume settings it doesn't do anything. My speakers work fine. It's just getting it to recognize its not being played on a tv anymore that is annoying.
Does anyone have any clue what to do?
    Thanks

DaVBMan, thanks for that post. That clears up something for me. I think I have experienced that funny noise as well. It sounds like a Morse Code message. I have heard that same noise while at Church on it's PA speaker system. When I heard this, I figured the speakers were picking some radio frequency noise, but I couldn't understand what exactly it was. When I purchased my iPhone, I already had an old cable, stereo jack on one end and RCA plugs on the other. I noticed the same noise on my speakers. So, I am figuring if I replace the cable, I should be fine.

  • Connecting Macbook To Television

    Hello,
Is there a way to connect my Macbook to my Television in order to be able to surf the web? I bought a DVI to S-video converter and it allows me to watch movies on my TV that I have stored on my macbook in very good quality; however, my desktop image and any website w/ non-video content looks very blurry and the text is very hard to read. Is there a device available that will allow me to view websites w/ high resolution?
    Thanks.

I take it from the fact you are not using a HDMI connection that you dont have a HD tv? That is probably your problem, or if you do have a HDTV you should be using the HDMI connection.
Video quality is bad anyway, you probably wont notice the difference with the connection and tv you are using.
Computer monitors use many more pixels that are similar to the better HDTVs, but the tv wont be as crisp as your laptop screen.

  • Menu page image and text cut off on burned DVD

I burned a DVD using the travel theme. The project looks fine on my Intel iMac, but when I put the disc into my home DVD player, the menu page, which is not in letterbox format like the rest of the project, has the outer edges cut off and the text and images don't fit the television screen. The rest of the disc looks fine. Any suggestions as to why this happened?
    Thanks!

    Hi DrumRunner:
iDVD: How to Determine TV Safe Area
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50151
iDVD: Creating widescreen DVDs for standard size televisions
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303030
    Then there is:
    Old Toad's recipe for:
Masking Movies to the TV Safe Area for iDVD
The mask should be 640 x 480 pixels and the movie 514 x 386 (I arrived at this figure by making a snapshot of the TV save area of an iDVD project with Snapz). You can set this size after you’ve joined it with the mask movie with Quicktime Player Pro.
Import the black mask jpg file into iMovie and and export it as a .mov file at the same length as your movie (there may be a way to not have to create a specific length mask for each movie but I haven't found it. If the times do not match the movie file will be synced to the length of the mask movie).
Open the mask movie in QT Player Pro and then open your regular movie and make it the front window of the two. Now you'll need to run a QT Player AppleScript titled "Merge Movie 1 into Movie 2". You can get it from this Apple site: Quicktime Player Scripts.
Then run the script. You can then run the merged movie to check it out. Your movie will be located in the upper lefthand corner of the window when played.
When you open the Movie Properties window from the Window menu for the combined file you’ll see the following:
Video Track 1: the black mask
Video Track 2 : your movie file
Tween track: Have no idea what this is.
    Sound track: self explanaotry
    Black mask.
To set the size of your movie to the correct size select it in the Properties window and click on Visual Settings pane. Then enter 514 in the first field and hit enter. With the Preserve Aspect Ration box checked the other size will automatically be set.
To center the video track in the center of the mask select the Video Track 2 item and plug in a offset of about: 60 & 40. You'll probably have to play with that to fine tune the centering. Doing the math and subtracting the movie dimensions from the mask dimensions and dividing by two just didn't get it perfectly centered. I'm sure I'm missing something here.
Now save as a new self contained movie after checking the High Quality box at the bottom right.
You can not import it into iDVD for preview and burning. One drawback is that you can't invoke the TV save area for a movie in iDVD to check it out. But you can mark it on the monitor screen while viewing a menu or slideshow and then play the movie to see how close you came.
Since I made this workflow I've found that iDVD NTSC likes 720 x 540 pixels for standard video in NTSC format so you might want to make the black mask that size and adjust the video accordingly. As I said it takes some fiddling.
    Does that help?

  • Reading certain lines of a text file and boundary testing ...

    Hi all,
This is only my second post so please be gentle ;P
Basically, my problem is that i want to read certain chunks of a text file into different text boxes. For example, this may be 50 lines in textbox1, then 50 in textbox2, then the rest in textbox3. i know this would involve using a splitter, but i have absolutelyno
idea how i would go about implementation this. any help would be greatly appreciated on this.
my second problem is that i also need to carry out testing on my system. one page in this is the login page. I understand that normal data would be all correct fields and erroneous data would be blank field(s). however, i dont really know what would be boundary
testing for this. The only thing i could think of is correct username but incorrect password but i dont think this is correct. again, any help would be appreciated.

I suppose there would be a reason for needing to read some amount of lines into each textbox. But you make no mention of why that would be necessary.
There is such a thing as a delimited text file. Each line would contain a delimiter of some character between fields on each line. That file could be used for displaying information in separate controls on a Form.
But you only mention TextBox's and reading x amount of lines from a file into each TextBox as if you are perhaps providing certain information for each TextBox.
If that is what you want then provided replies will work. If you want to explain what you need to do with regard to information in a file and displaying it otherwise then please explain so that a better method could be provided.
    Example using Text Field Parser.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.visualbasic.fileio.textfieldparser(v=vs.110).aspx
    Option Strict On
    Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
    Me.Location = New Point(CInt((Screen.PrimaryScreen.WorkingArea.Width / 2) - (Me.Width / 2)), CInt((Screen.PrimaryScreen.WorkingArea.Height / 2) - (Me.Height / 2)))
    Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser("c:\Users\John\Desktop\DelimitedTextFile.Txt")
    MyReader.TextFieldType = Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.FieldType.Delimited
    MyReader.Delimiters = New String() {"|"}
    Dim currentRow As String()
    While Not MyReader.EndOfData
    Try
    currentRow = MyReader.ReadFields()
    ListBox1.Items.Add(currentRow(0))
    ListBox2.Items.Add(currentRow(1))
    ListBox3.Items.Add(currentRow(2))
    Catch ex As Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.MalformedLineException
    MsgBox("Line " & ex.Message & " is invalid. Skipping")
    End Try
    End While
    End Using
    End Sub
    End Class
Text in text file DelimitedTextFile.Txt. Delimiter is vertical bar.

  • Hooking 12" PowerBookG4 up to Television

What adapters do I need to hook my 12" PowerBookG4 up to my television so that I can watch movies?
Also, will I be able to use the television as a monitor once it is hooked up like this?
    Thanks for the help!

Given those specs, you will want to buy the Apple video adapter for your model that has an S-Video connection on it, then use an S-Video cable to plug it into the S-Video connector on your TV. This will provide the best available picture on your TV from your PowerBook. You must also plug a 1/8" stereo cable into your PowerBook and run it to the RCA audio inputs on the TV. Check your TV manual to find out which audio input pair goes with with the S-Video input.
While your TV has a higher quality Component connection, I don't think there is a way to get Component out of your PowerBook, so S-Video it is. Don't bother with the AV (composite) video ports, they are lower resolution than S-Video. S-Video should be more than good enough for playing back DVDs, Internet videos, and slide shows.
But if you were planning on using the TV as another computer monitor, prepare to be disappointed. Good computer monitor resolution doesn't start until you have a TV with at least a VGA and preferably HDMI connection. The best you will do with S-Video is probably around 800x600 if you want to keep computer UI text readable, maybe 1024x768 if you're lucky (which would match the LCD on the PowerBook 12"). But don't take my word for it, when you get the cable keep turning up the TV resolution in the Displays preference until you can't read the text.

MiniDisplayPort-to-? adapter, available at Apple stores and Best Buy and antplace selling Apple.  Plugs into the Thunderbolt or "lightning bolt" port.
Replace ? with HDMI or VGA or DVI.
Know that TVs spave pixels further apart, for viewing at 10-15 ft instead of close as monitors do.  Makes viewing small text at 10 ft difficult sometimes.
Another poster also recently reported that using the mouse on the external display is "laggy".  Some models of Mac have only a graphics card integrated into the CPU (which can be challenged by running a big external TV) and some have a "discrete" or "second" graphics card that handles TVs better.

  • Intermittent Garbage Behind Text Imported to FCP

Hi - I'm animating some text with the wave behavior in Motion, adding a drop shadow and importing the Motion file into FCP. I'm getting some black areas behind the text that are not getting masked out in FCP.
After searching the subject I changed the alpha in FCP from straight to black and it has not solved the problem.
The text looks great for a majority of the time but every so often a few frames have a garbled black rectangle behind them.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Craig

First, make sure that all render types under the Sequence->Render menus have a check mark beside them - and then render the Sequence.  Next, make sure the images aren't too large for your Sequence.  If you plan to push (zoom) in to the images, they probably shouldn't be more than twice the pixel dimensions of the Sequence you're working in.  If the images are too large, you'll see 'mosquito' noise or other artifacts in the image on a TV monitor.  Resize them in Photoshop or Preview before importing them into your FCP project.
Also note that 300 pixels per inch isn't the an accurate measurement term - I think you mean dots per inch (DPI) which has absolutely no bearing on image quality in video/television.  It is a measurement used in the print world.  A 1200 x 800 pixel image at 1200 DPI will look exactly the same as that same 1200 x 800 image at 72 DPI on a television monitor.

  • Attractive Onscreen Text within Final Cut? Is it Possible?

Why does onscreen text look so good on the computer and so terrible in the finished project?! I need suggestions as to a Font, Setting, color, Something....that will make the text look good on video & DVD. I'm using FCP 4.5, on a G4 Tower. I'm using Title 3D right now, because I'm adding subtitles to a video, and this many LiveType movies would be labor intensive. I've tried sans serif and serif fonts, added and removed drop shadow, tried outlining, etc. All looks well on a still frame, but when you playback, it wiggles, it's blurry, it's awful. It has always been thus! But with the amount of text I'm using for subtitles.....it needs to look clean. I'd be willing to use LiveType if necessary, if that's what it takes, but would love to avoid it if possible. I've tried the de-flicker filter, doesn't make a difference. Anyone out there ever have nice looking onscreen text?

suggestions as to a Font, Setting, color,
Something....that will make the text look good on
    video & DVD.
Type that looks good on video may not look good on DVD if it is too small--below say 20 / 22 points-- and has serifs. When compressing to MPEG2 both of these factors can cause the type to break down and become a blob of pixels rather than defined characters.
    I've tried sans serif and
serif fonts, added and removed drop shadow, tried
outlining, etc. All looks well on a still frame, but
when you playback, it wiggles, it's blurry, it's
awful. It has always been thus!
There's not really a formula...we all have the same factors to deal with, especially the DV codec which is not particularly friendly to graphic elements. If you are able to use an uncompressed codec-- 8 or 10 bit, your graphics / type will be cleaner. The uncompressed codecs have a deeper color space for superior rendering. The wiggling of type on a television comes from interlacing. Once again, if the type is tiny, it will appear to wiggle more because one screen line will represent a more substantial portion of the type. To reduce wiggle, put a small blur on teh typ, say .2 pixels. Should clean it up a bunch.
I'd be willing to use LiveType if necessary,
if that's what it takes, but would love to avoid it
    if possible.
The Boris plugin and Livetype both use vector graphics to creat type, the FCP type tool doesn't. Generally speaking, this will not be much of a factor in DV codec once all is renered, but check it out. Maybe you'll see a difference.
    Good luck and happy typing.
Welcome to the discussions, and for some Newbie hazing, "Read your manuals!"

  • FCP text is ultra-pixelated even after rendering. How do i fix it?

I've been working with FCP for a while now and this is an issue I've had a few time before. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesnt. thing is, i dont do anything differently from time to time. But its been happening every time lately. Even after I render, the text in FCP is very pixelated. It looks nice when im in the program, in my canvas, but then i view it full screen or export and the text looks terrible. Also, I've been using livetype files that are fully rendered and look great in livetype and after i render them from livetype, but the same thing happens. Am i missing something? Please help. I edit a show called Seesmix and it has happened pretty much every time with this show. I export it as .mp4. So if you want to see what im talking about, you can check out the show on youtube... http://youtube.com/profile?user=seesmix.
thanks for reading and please help!

i've seen your video and your text seems fine to me. are you planning to ever have this broadcast on television? if so then there may be an issue. but if everything is webcast then it looks fine. i'd tell you to view everything on an NTSC monitor before air but i'm not sure if you are going to need it.
you mentioned that when you 'watch it full screen' that the text looks bad. do you mean full screen on youtube or fullscreen on your comp monitor? how big of a monitor is it? everything will look like garbage if you expand it beyond the size that it was intended for. it's like, HD stops being HD if you look at it on a huge monitor. pixels get larger and you lose definition.

  • Text has jagegd edges

I've recently upgraded from FCP-3 to the most recent FCP-Suite. While building a project similar to work I had done in the older version of FCP I'm finding that many of my graphics have jagged edges when exporting the project to a movie. This is most noticable with text. I have this same issue with movies that were created in LiveType. When I check the LiveType source movie it looks great, smooth edges on all of the text, but once it is brought into FCP and rendered it looks horrible. The only difference I can find is that LiveType is rendering in 720x486 and FCP is going to 720x480. I tried adjusting the size in FCP to match the native resolution from LiveType, but to no avail.
It's most troublesome because I have not changed anything in my workflow except for FCP and I used to get fantastic results with all of my graphics.

I don't buy this television monitor stuff. I've created projects in FCP that look fine on my display and translate to DVD just as well. This current project looks terrible when transfered to DVD, and in any case I'm looking to present on 20x15 screens with 10k projectors, so yes, I need the best res possible. How come I can get the results I need directly out of LiveType but not from FCP?

  • Basic question about positioning titles & text...

    Hi there,
I am working on a presentation that will be shown via laptop>projector>big screen. I am very used to working with the title safe option for tv screens, does this not apply for my text using laptop and projector? (I need all the screen space I can get!)
    Thanks,
    Karen

I am no expert so please check other replies.
The "TV safe" area ONLY applies to television sets that block the edges of the picture from the viewer with the TV's plastic or whatever material frame that "blocks" the view of these edges.
Your laptop and projector will show everything.
No need to consider "TV Safe" for your project.
    Good Luck!

  • Adding text turns page pink

When I open the document I get a message: "This file was created to be viewed on a television screen, but will appear compressed on your computer monitor. For optimal editing, it is recommended that you use a video monitor to preview and edit this image." I then click OK and open the document, but when I attempt to add text the entire page turns pink. I can add text but it is distorted - stretched in a horizontal direction.
I have read posts regarding this problem but none of the solutions have worked for me. Thanks for any help.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10. TIF file.

    Hello Ansal,
Please correct my understanding if it is wrong, you are essentially interested in editing the content of the recording senario so
that the new content will be visible in the simulation (HTM file). If this is the case then open the recording file (UDC)using the
RWD tool and then in the document mode, do the required modification and then save the file. Then publish the
recording file to create the updated htm file.
    Hope this helps !!
