Text quality when exporting to PDF -- CS4

Hi,
Whenever I export my InDesign document to a "high quality print" (PDF) or any PDF preset, for that matter, the text becomes "chunky." The picture below illustrates the problem. The text on the left is how the text appears in InDesign, while the text on the right is how the text appears after exported to a PDF. I have used system fonts and the problem still persists. When I first installed InDesign, I never had this problem, but after having to reinstall it, my exported PDFs look terrible. How can I get the text to appear as it does in InDesign when exporting to a PDF?

Thanks!

Acrobat, and Reader, have user preferences, just like other Adobe programs, and you can turn smoothing on or off for text and lineart (this also affects "stitching" on PDFs made with flattened transparency).
InDesign automatically tries to embed all but the most complex (read CJK) fonts when exporting, and should throw a warning, if you haven't turned it off, when it cannot embed due to font licensing restrictions (in which case I would change the font). Printing to PDF requires that font embedding be enabled in the joboptions that are used by distiller, and those options are quite flexible as far as all, none, or some (i.e. you can designate fonts to always embed or never embed).

  • Text wrapping when exporting to .pdf

I'm running Pages 5.2 on OSX 10.9.2. When exporting my document to .pdf, it does not retain it's text wrapping. When viewing the document in Pages, everything is where I put it. When viewing the document as a .pdf after exporting, some of the text will no longer be wrapped around some of the pictures. Which text no longer wraps around which picture changes every time I export, even without altering the document in any way. I have tried grouping the objects and the text together, which only seemed to cause more text to fail to wrap.

I'm using Acrobat X. I've attached a cap of the InDesign poster, and what I get when exporting to PDF -- I lose the title, and "Directed by..." (which is the same type size/color as the playwright). Also, I have overprint preview checked for automatic (and tried all the other settings, too).

  • Can you retain text highlighting when exporting to PDF from InDesign?

    Hi,
I have several publications that are now going to be reviewed by another individual and I was planning to export them to PDF.
However, I've already highlighted bibliographic references, table call outs, figure call outs in the InDesign file using different colors and I was wondering if there is a way to retain that highlighting when exporting to PDF? Just thought it might make their life a little easier since I already have all that done in the file.
    Thanks!

Ah ha! Got it! All I needed was your prompt! I looked to make sure that it was set up as conditional text and noticed the Show/Hide option at the bottom of the pop-up. (I knew I saw something before that would allow this, but couldn't remember where!)
    Thanks for jogging my memory!

  • Text dropping when exporting to PDF

I'm working on an very large poster for a theatre company. The poster has an image, and uses the font Gotham for the text. When I export to PDF from InDesign 5.5, some of the text disappears. I used effects on the title, which disappears, but also some text at the same size/color as other text that does show up. It can't be a corrupt font issue because it's showing up correctly in most areas. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

  • Text Reflow When Exporting A PDF

I import 2 PDF's. One ontop of the other. The one on top is set to multiply (Transparency Effects). I export a new PDF and the text has reflowed and also causing text sit ontop of text. Imported PDF's are coming out of Quark 8. Quark 7 PDF's do fine. It only occurs if I set the PDF to multiply in ID. I can export from CS3 just fine with multiply on, but not CS4 or CS5. The PDF's are provided by clients. I have no way of swapping fonts. Any advice?

The PDFs you just sent work fine
here, but it doesn't prove a lot because they still are not the ones
inthe ID file you sent yesterday.
Please, File > Package... then zip that
    folder.
These PDFs were the in the ID file, I had just copied and renamed them. The problem now is that I can no longer re-create the problem. I don't know what has happened, nothing as far as I can tell. I got a chance to get back into this for a couple of hours late yesterday. Now, what is happening is that anything I create new is working OK as long as it is not being combined with anything old. For example, the 2 test PDFs, that were uploaded, work fine together, but when I switch the bottom PDF out with my client original PDF, I get the reflow issue. If I create a new PDF, from the Client Original Quark file, the combined PDF comes out fine. So, it looks like, moving forward will be problem free. The problem now is that we have thousands of old files, some of which we haven't had any issues with, that we will have to update in order for the problem to be completely fixed. My current solotution would be to combine the PDFs in ID CS3 since the exported PDF is OK in that version and then update only the files we know are problem files. Then to update any that may pop up in the future. The only thing I'm not sure of is, will there be other issues that will arise exporting combined PDFs from ID CS3?

  • Strange text behavior when exporting to pdf

I have this problem happening all the time - am I doing something wrong or is this a gitch?
I have a question style that shoots to the left when at the top of a page and when the frame touches the top frame guide. If I move the frame very slightly it goes back to where it belongs - however having to always move the frame that otherwise sits automatically on the page guide is really annoying and time consumming. The second ilmage shows how the line goes to the left - this happens in Indesign usually. However the captures below show another problem that happened yesterday. In this case there was a difference between the InDesign file and the pdf file.
    1st image is inDesign view
2nd image is odf view - the pdf looks different from what we have in InDesign.
Any reason why this would happen?

  • Problem with photo quality when exporting interactive pdf

    Hi guys!
I made a simple pdf with before/after retouching samples with photos overlayed, changing on mouse rollover.
When I export it as an interactive pdf (on lossless jpeg quality), the photo quality on the final pdf looks like a jpeg on 40% quality, really bad. Rollover works.
When I export it as a pdf for print on high quality - the photo quality in the final pdf is flawless but rollovers dont work.. (I checked "Interactive Elements: Include Appearance) but still nothing..
Pleeease help cause I can't find a way. I just need the rollovers to work and to have the photos in the best quality possible.
    Thanks,
    Jelena

If you haven't already you need to change the resolution as well.  Like this:
72ppi is the default which in theory should be fine for on screen viewing, but play around and use what works for you.

  • Why am I losing quality when exporting to PDF from Numbers?

Hi guys, so I need to export a fairly large table I have to PDF so that I can get it into the report. It looks beautiful in Numbers, and then when I go to print, size it the way I want it, save as PDF, I get a crappy looking table....Lines have just randomly disappeared or faded. What is going on and how do I fix this?! It looks great in Numbers, I don't understand why it should look any different when I print to PDF.... Here is a screen shot inside Numbers, notice the lines look perfect....then a screen shot after exporting in Preview, notice how some of the lines are totally gone. You'll see the rows for "depth" have a dotted line to dived them....in preview the dotted line just disappears in one spot, but not in another. It's totally random and I've no idea how to fix it....

    Hi randiceleste,
How are you applying that dotted Cell Border?
Using 1 point dotted Border below a row in Numbers:
Then Menu > File > Print... > Print... > PDF > Save as PDF
What point size are you applying?
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Report Title and Text Area issue when exported to pdf using Viewer

    Hi there,
We are using OracleBI Discoverer Version 10.1.2.55.26
We have reports that displays Report title containing the following
    - Report Title
    - Runt Date and Time
    - Page No
And text area which displays 'Last Page'
Following properties are set at the worksheet level using page setup
Report Title --> 'Print on every Page'
Text Area --> 'Print on last page'
The report when exported to PDF using Discoverer plus works fine and displays report title and text area as defeined.
But when we try to export the same report to pdf from Discoverer viewer, it displays
    - Report title on first page only.
    - text area on all pages
All our users accesses report using discoverer viewer so we cannot open discoverer plus to them.
Is there a solution which will enable us to export the report in pdf using discoverer viewer and displays the same output as discoverer plus.
Please let me know... If you have any questions then please feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance for your help...

but when opened on other os x machines some text is colored differently than it should be
Well, if typographic objects are colour managed, the colour appearance is dependent on the source ICC profile that describes the colourants in the typographic objects and the destination ICC profile that describes the colours the display is able to form and the RBC colourant combinations that will form those colours.
In general, typographic objects should have special treatment, since the expectation is not that typographic objects should be colour managed, but that typographic objects should simple be set to the maximum density of dark. On a display, that is R=0 G=0 B=0 and on a seperations device (a lithographic press) that is C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100.
If for some reason typographic objects are colour managed, and if the ICC profiles for the displays are off by half a mile or more in relation to the actual state of the display system, then the colours will not be the same. On the other hand, if those displays are calibrated and characterized, then the colourants will be converted to form the same colours on the displays.

  • Can you have a PDF fit on the viewer's screen automatically when exporting from InDesign CS4?

Can you have a PDF fit on the viewer's screen automatically when exporting from InDesign CS4?

If you were to upgrade to InDesign CS5 or CS5.5 and if you exported as Adobe PDF (Interactive), you could set the View settings for Page Layout and Zoom.
While, as Jongware points out, its possible for individual users to override that option (Preferences > Page Display > Default Layout and Zoom), the number who will actually do that is actually very tiny.

Set up the Preflight panel so it checks image resolution. Ask your printer what the appropriate resolution is for your printing process, and set that in Preflight.

  • Exporting to PDF - CS4 trouble

In exporting my file, If I choose > Acrobat 4, (Acrobat 5 and above) I get missing elements to my PDF file (attached, v5.) pg 2 shows correctly, pg 1 doesn't (white box around text on left page is missing on the first page). At least v4 consistently works correctly for me (attached.) Of the 180 page book, only four pages print correctly, of the 74 pages that have this image applied.
The White Box is on the Master Page, so the same information is on both spreads.
This is the first time I've seen this, and I've been working from these files since InDesign 1 or 2. I'm thinking it's a CS4 bug, as CS3 was just fine. I've tried this with an older file (different fonts) and have the same results.
I can Print to PDF just fine, and then resize as needed for the web w/ PDF Optimizer (I've 'exported' this way to get around this problem.)
This file is exported as spreads, but same results if that isn't checked.
Anyone having similar problems? Any solutions?

This seems to be a CS4 bug.
It might be fixed with the lastest update, but you can fix it if you unlock the item from the master page, or flatten transparency when exporting to PDF (X-1a).It seems to only affect objects with applied effects on the master pages. But it doesn't affect every file.

  • Objects missing when exporting to PDF, but show up when printing to PDF

Hi - I'm working with someone, both of us in InDesign CS4, and she has some documents that cause a few random objects to just go missing when exported to PDF (same on my computer). But when printing to PDF, they show up fine. They also show up fine if we recreate each individual object, but that can end up being a lot of work. She prefers to export to PDF because of quality. I'm drawing a blank on this one!
The attached file shows the issue. The green blocks just don't want to show up when exporting.

    Peter -
The links are just the PDFs of the black and white portions and don't really matter too much since they show up fine when exporting or printing to PDF. Our main concern is the green blocks, which are indeed the green areas of the plan you pointed out. They are actually separate objects created directly within InDesign that can be moved and adjusted.
I just updated to 6.0.4 and that didn't help. I wonder if this may be a variant of the bugs I was reading about with master pages and certain things not showing up when creating PDFs or printing (even though none of these things are on the master page)?
    Thanks

  • Formatting of text fields when exporting from InDesign to Acrobat Pro

How does one preserve the formatting  of a text field when exporting from InDesign CS6 to Acrobat Pro? It loses both the font and the alignment formatting in the PDF.

Use a font that allows embedding/ check the font embedding settings in the PDF output settings.

  • Fontissue when Exporting to PDF CS5

Commented on linked thread and advised to start new tread.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/651071?tstart=0
When Exporting to PDF from ID CS5 I have seen font displace and disappear.
Have done some tests since my post on linked tread, and find out, using PDF/X_1a:2001 (PDF version 1.3), it works fine. But when I use PDF version 1.4 and above fonts randomly dissappears. See first picture below.
OK, for me as this is only going to print, but with 1.3 we loose hyperlink and bookmarks if used in other media.
Have seen font displace when Exporting to PDF, (Second picture) and in this case there was no way to get it right with options mentioned above. Only way it came out right was to outline the font...and also PS - Distiller worked fine.
I have found my workarounds, but I would really like to trust the Export to PDF in the future as that is the way Adobe advice us to use.
Workaround 1. Use PDF version 1.3
    Workaround 2.
In (application folder) Adobe Indesign CS5 - Presets
Make a new folder - PPDs
Put (ADPDF8.PPD or ADPDF9.PPD) into this folder. (I had a backup of these files, cant find them online...!?!?)
Makes it possible to print PS from InDesign and use Distiller.

    @Clement,
We've determined the root case of the text shifts you're seeing in at least one of the cases. In the Animals_Me_Spreads.indd file is having text drop out due to soft returns at the ends of Text on Path objects. We are investigating what would be necessary to fix it, and would hope that we can address it in a future update or release. In the meantime, you should be able to elimiate the problems by eliminating the use of soft returns on Text on Path objects, for example, replace them with hard returns, or limit one story to a path and make the second path contain a separate story.
    Sincerely,
    Matthew
