Text substitution in non-native apps.

Can text substitution work in non-native apps like Chrome? I'd rather use a built-in feature than load Typinator or other apps. They sometimes get hung up, whereas when I was suing Safari it was all smooth with the OS version...

Try it and report back with your findings.

  • No apple logo shown on non-native apps

Every time i'm running a non-native app (apps not by apple) i got no apple logo on the upper left corner, it is just an aesthetic thing yet it's really annoying, apple logo is shown for apple apps, for updated apps (openoffice, skype and few more) but it's not showing for chrome, for adobe suite and so on...
(beside i got no icon in the menu bar for dropbox, but i contacted their own support too)

    Greetings,
I just had the exact same problem with a Mini. Would only boot to a gray screen no matter what I did. Booting into the OpenFirmware did help, booting into the Startup utility (by holding "T" down at startup showed no hard drive and no CD/DVD drive.
    Hold on to your hat . . . .
The issue was the battery. These guys have a Lithium battery that allows them to boot up, a battery that can be purchased anywhere that sells those kinds of thing. I bought 2 for $3.50, it was more time and trouble to get into the case and get at the logic board but once the battery was replaced everything works like a dream.
Here is an excellent step-by-step tutorial about getting into the case http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm. Just make sure that doing so doesn't void any warranties.
    Good Luck!

  • Anyone else getting errors when importing Music Library music into non-native apps?

I have had a bunch of Music Production apps On my iPad for a long time and all the way through iOS four iOS 5 they worked just fine importing songs from my iPod library on my iPad and my iPhone however all of a sudden after the iOS six update they do not any longer seem to have the ability to import these songs.  It appears to be a universal problem across ALL non-native apps ... On songs that are DRM-Free.  I have specifically tried importing tracks that have imported before with no problems, downloading new copies of the same tracks, and purchasing new DRM-free content in the iTunes Store.  None of which will work.  My devices are not jailbroken, or altered from factory in any way, I just purchased a new iPhone 5 and a new iPad 3 and neither of them are allowing me to import these tracks.  I have tried:
    AnyTune / AnyTune HD
Vocalive (paid version) from IK Multimedia
Amplitube / Fender Amplitube from IK Multimedia
    ISequence Pro HD
    Studio HD
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?  I have -- on a few apps -- been shown the "Convert this song to a different format and try again" dialog, and I can import songs if I use my laptop and a browser, but I can't seem to import any song directly from the Music Library stored locally on my iPad or my iPhone.
    Help?
    Best Regards, Rob Norton

    Thanks, Ed.
Well, if iTunes is running, I figured out that you can drag the folder where the wav files are directly onto the main portion of the iTunes screen. This will
import the wav files into iTunes. Then group select the new song
entries and use "convert selection to AAC" from the Advanced menu.
There may be a way to convert without creating double entries for the
songs (I think that's the way you have to do it in iTunes: hence my attitude that iTunes is convenient in some respects, but less than clear in other respects..in other words, it's not a perfect program), but I delete the wav tracks after the conversion.
This is what I've gleaned from using iTunes a bit and from having been advised by friends. So, other than using a third-party freeware like X Lossless Decoder to convert music files before moving them onto iPod, apparently this is what you have to deal with when using the iTunes program.
If any Apple people are reading this, I would personally like the iTunes "importing" and display functions to be clearer and less cumbersome to use (like that third-party freeware). iTunes seems to be easy enough to use if you're importing music from a CD, but measurably less so if you just want to convert music files residing elsewhere on the computer's hard drive.

  • Upgrade worked(?), apps back, but non-native apps won't open

Anybody having this problem....after 6 hours, iOS 5 update completed on my iPad2.  No error messages, all apps back where they belonged.  I thought I was one of the lucky few for which it all worked.
But..none of my non-native apps will even open - just a quick darkening of the screen and back to Home.
All native apps open and work.
    I have rebooted...nothing...
Should I try restoring again?  Or is there a way that would take less than 6 hours??
    Thanks

Exact same problem, I restored and it seemd to work again - so i put all my apps and movies back on and volla, it does the 'maximizing' animation as if the app is about to start loading then it just vanishs.. the built in apps all work but not a single other app loads

  • All non-native iPad apps crashing

    Hi,
Yesterday out of the blue all of my non-native apps starting crashing as soon as they were opened. The only apps that were spared were Numbers and Keynote. Pages is having the problem too and I'm reluctant to delete it and reinstall because I have some useful files stored in it.
Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Not a single app will run after updating to 5 (other than native apps)

I have just updated to iOS5 and of my 60+ non native apps (Navigo, Facebook etc) not a single one will run.
    Is anyone else experiencing?
    Thanks,
    Derek

Go to the app store and update all apps that are available for update.  There are several releases for iOS5.  Once I did this, all my apps started working again (even ones that didn't need updating).

  • Text substitution does not work on all apps

Text substituiton feature works fine in Mac Mail, but does not work in Microsoft Word, excel and others.
    How can I fix this?

Word and Excel do not support the system level text substitution routines. These work only with native apps like Mail, TextEdit and so forth. Some third-party apps can also tap into them.
    The workaround is simple:
    Preferences>AutoCorrect
Word will allow you to create any number of text substitutions. They won't, though, interact with native apps like Mail.
Microsoft Outlook, being more of a native OS X app, does support the system level text functions.

Has anyone noticed on the 6 in iOS 8 that the non-apple apps like facebook, etc have a much more zoomed in feel even when using the standard view?

Is there a way to keep it consistent and reduce the third-party apps size?

  • How can I make text substitutions learn the correct capitalization of an acronym?

I love the text substitutions function in the Mac OS, and the auto grammar and spelling corrections are usually really useful, but there is one particular instance that is driving me insane. In my job, I end up using the acronym "TAs" (for "teaching assistants") all the time. Mac constantly autocorrects this to "Tas." I have tried adding "tas" to text substitutions in the settings and telling it to substitute "TAs," but it just autocorrects my substitution to "Tas." I have tried telling the OS to learn the spelling "TAs," but that hasn't worked either. I don't want to turn off capitalization correction altogether because I usually find it useful. Is there a way to fix this one word? The only workaround I have found is that it doesn't correct me when I pluralize with an apostrophe (as in "TA's"), but I am really not a fan of that.
I am running Mavericks 10.9.5, if that helps.

    Hi Laura_mac !
Does it depend on the application?
    Using Yosemite I added
    tas to Keyboard ====> Text
    so that TAs becomes TAs
    It worked via Safari 8.03
    via Pages and Numbers (3.5.2)
It did not work in BBEdit
    nor Firefox
    nor Word
If you do a lot of text substitution I found the following app quite helpful.  You can customize to a great degree.

  • Is it possible to create a shortcut for current time / date with iPhone native apps?

is it possible to create a shortcut to insert the current time / date in a text such as a Note with iPhone (IOS 6) native apps (not a 3rd. party app)?
By "shortcut" I mean a combination of characters, the same as under settings/general/keyboards/shortcuts.

  • Pasting HTML to the clipboard to be used by Windows native apps

I'm having problems creating a DataFlavor that will allow me to write a
string to the clipboard in html format so that a windows native app (e.g.
MS Word) can recognise this format and allow me the option of
pasting as html rather than just plain text.
I've found that if I alter my code to first get the contents off the
clipboard (some html I copy from an Internet Explorer-viewed web page), I
can extract the html DataFlavor from the Transferable object that IE has
placed on the clipboard. If I then use this "stolen" DataFlavor to write my
contents to the clipboard, I find that I can successfully paste as HTML in a
    windows native app.
However, since I can't rely on grabbing some html from IE just to get a
suitable DataFlavor each time I need to use my copy function, I have been
attempting to construct my own DataFlavor to match the characteristics of
    the IE example flavour.
The problem is that, having set the representation class, MIMEType and human
presentable name to match the IE flavor, when I call DataFlavor.equals() to
compare the two flavours it returns false, and my constructed flavour
subsequently fails to show up as a paste option in any native apps. Having
compared every possible property of both flavours, I've concluded that the
only difference between the two is that the IE flavour has the charset
parameter set as utf-8, whereas my constructed flavour has no charset
parameter specified. I have found no way to manually set the charset. So
calling getMimeType() on each flavour gives:
    IEDataFlavor.getMimeType() = text/html; class=java.io.InputStream; charset=utf-8
    MyOwnDataFlavor.getMimeType() = text/html; class=java.io.InputStream
Using the Windows Clipboard viewer I have observed that my constructed
DataFlavor does exist on the clipboard, however whereas the IE flavour's
    visible name is "HTML Format", mine is "JAVA_DATAFLAVOR: text/html;
    class=java.io.InputStream"
and I think this is the reason that native windows apps are failing to
recognise my DataFlavor as a valid option for display.
    I'm using jdk 1.3.1
If anyone has ever encountered this problem or can think of a solution I'd
be extremely grateful for your help.
    Thanks,
    Steve White

    I have a similar problem:
IE actually put the "HTML Format"(CF_HMTL) flavor into the clipboard, with some additional info, such as SourceURL as the description.
    see
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/networking/clipboard/htmlclipboard.asp
How will this information be available to Java clipboard?
Main question, for HTML data pasted by IE into the clipboard, how to get the source url.
I know some Windows native apps could get that info nicely.
    Thanks!

  • Symbol and Text Substitution Settings File-

    Hi,
I have two computers with Snow Leopard, and I've made a [large] list of substitutions on one computer. I'd really rather not spend my time manually copying them over from each computer. I've tried looking for a settings files to copy, but I can't find it. The one for words I've chosen to have OS X 'learn' is found in the 'Spelling' folder (~/Library), but I can't find substitutions.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

    Go to System Preferences...
    - Language & Text
    - - Text
    Symbol and Text Substitution
Hit the '+' icon bottom right to add your own.
Otherwise, you should perhaps look to a 3rd party app, such as TypeIt4Me:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6908
Be sure whatever you find is snow leopard compatible, of course.

  • Symbol and Text Substitution

What applications are the Symbol and Text substitutions supposed to work in? Mine don't seem to work in any. Neither the original default ones now ones I have created myself work in a web browser, Mail, Word, etc.
Any help to get them working would be appreciated.

I just played with it a little bit before responding to this post.
MS Excel 2008 it appears that only the copyright and registered symbol worked as listed in the 'Language & Test' preference. The trademark symbol is listed as only typing 'TM' (w/o quotes), however in Excel it required the () to work. Non of the fractions worked.
In MS Word 2008 everything was the same except the fractions also worked.
I couldn't get any of the 'custom' ones to function, like type !@ and get Hello.
I then went to Textedit, and everything worked including the ones I created.
So it looks like it is hit and miss as to what will work and what won't.

  • Native apps not working on Yosemite/ Cannot reinstall

After the Yosemite update virtually none of the native apps on my MacBook (mid 2010) launch. ITunes does, but not AppStore, Safari or even 'About this Mac' option. The icons in the dock bounce once and then nothing happens.
Moreover, when trying to reinstall OS using OS X Utilities (command + R when booting) the 'continue' button cannot be clicked: the mouse pointer works ok, but the options in the top left corner like ‘file’, ‘edit’ etc. do not (I can only navigate between the four options by arrow buttons, use ‘ctrl+q’ to quit and that’s just about it). Trying to install OS X from a CD (‘c’ while restarting) I face the same problem, where it lets me choose the language at the beginning but then won’t proceed as the ‘continue’ button does not respond likewise.
Is there any way to restore or reinstall the system? Please, help!

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

If you have to install from scratch, then you must first install Snow Leopard using the Installer disc that came with your computer when it was new:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
