Text Substitution NOT system-wide!

The text substitution functionality in 10.6 (changing "teh" into "the" etc. automatically) works like a charm in TextEdit but NOT in Mail, Pages, Numbers, Word etc. What am I missing? Pages and Numbers have their own section of text substitution (Preferences Menu - Auto Correction). Does one have to re-encode all the substitutions in these applications? Seems odd as this is presented in 10.6 as a system-wide service (System Preferences - Language and Text - Text)... Especially in Mail this saves a lot of time. Will have to revert to TextExpander... Anybody else bothered with this issue? Found a workaround?
Looking forward to your views!
Hendrik

It works fine in Mail. I've been using it for some time.
You have to turn it on, and there are no preferences for it like they are in TextEdit. Right click in the compose menu and enable it. It must be enabled separately for each application.
You can do the same for Safari as well, when you are entering text in a text box, right click and enable it.

  • Text substitution not taking new entries?

I have been using text substitution as an abbreviation expander for common words. All has gone well until tonight when I tried to add two new entries. They show up in the list just like all of the others but these two do not expand. All of those I have previously added work fine -- just not the two new ones. Either something has happened or I have forgotten some important step. I have opened and closed system preferences -- no effect. I re-booted the computer -- no effect.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem? And, more importantly, how do I solve it!

I realized that the substitution list for Pages wasn't the same as the generic list. I put the new entries in both list and all works as it should.

  • Symbol and Text Substitution not working correctly

    Hello,
in „Language & Text“ I have the following symbol and text substitutions enabled, which aren’t working in Pages version 5.1.1 (iMac 2011, Yosemite 10.10.1):
„- - >“ (written without blank space between the characters) which should be substituted to „➜“.
In Safari this works, but in Pages it isn’t working.
Other substitutions work in Pages, for example:
„! ! s s“ (written without blank space between characters) is substituted to „ẞ“ in Safari and Pages.
    Can somebody help me?

In Pages v5.5.1 and Yosemite 10.10.1, I can reproduce the injected space issue resulting from your Keyboard > Text substitution for „-->” to „→” . Even if you remove one of the '-', Pages will still insert the space before the right arrow in the result. This is a bug.
Fix: „..>” will produce the arrow without the injected space.

  • How to switch off ClearType (not system-wide, only app-internally)

    Hi guys,
hope you can help out on this one, which gives me a hard time for around two weeks now:
Basically my code starts something like this:
    #include <windows.h>
    #include <stdio.h>
    #pragma comment(lib, "user32.lib")
    int main(int argc, char *argv[])
    { SystemParametersInfoW(SPI_SETFONTSMOOTHING, FALSE, 0, SPIF_UPDATEINIFILE | SPIF_SENDCHANGE);
SystemParametersInfoW(SPI_SETFONTSMOOTHINGTYPE, 0, (PVOID)FE_FONTSMOOTHINGSTANDARD, SPIF_UPDATEINIFILE | SPIF_SENDCHANGE);These two lines have the effect I want to, which is switching off ClearType and smoothing-Features, like the app "ClearType-Switch" does for example.
Problem here: I do NOT want this to happen globally, instead I need this swithcing-off-effect only on my app itself.I am not very much into things like Logfont and GDI, so hopefully you got some quick idea on this.

    Hi CybeRRobotniC,
I think this answer is helpful for this issue in the thread. Please check Leo Davidson's answer :
    "You can use
    GetObject to get a
LOGFONT structure for an HFONT, then adjust the anti-aliasing flags on the LOGFONT, then create a new HFONT via
    CreateFontIndirect.
(Don't forget to destroy the font somewhere, after no control is using it anymore.)"

  • System wide preferences

    Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to make preferences that I currently have for one user on my computer system wide, so that all other users have the same setup. Ie, I don't have to setup "tap mouse pad, instead of press button" for all users independantly.
My thinking is that on my work computer I have multiple desktops, and it would be nice to have multiple users set up which works in kind of the same way.
If it isn't possible to set it so that the setup and preferences are not system wide, which group of files need to be copied, and would this work?
    Thanks

There are multi-desktop solutions for Mac too.
Most linuxes have this: inside your account you have 4 screens; and you can put applications on different screens.
    A quick google turned up:
This one is alfa, but works: http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/ (freeware)
    Seems complicated: http://www.codetek.com/ctvd/ (shareware)

  • System Wide Text Substitutions

I hope this is the right discussion group for this question. I just discovered that 10.6 has the ability for applications like Text Edit to use automatic text substitutions so that if you type "teh" by accident it will automatically change to "the". This is a great feature since any single "i" will become "I" and so on. You can progran whatever you like. In word processors this would include auto capitalization etc.
Can anyone tell me why this feature does not work for Mail? I am certain more users use Mail than the y do Text Edit (a great programme by the way).
Does Apple intend to extend this feature to Mail in the future. It's always been a problem for me since I use Outlook at work and it includes all those features as part of the Office thing (including auto capitilization). It would really help the workflow of Mail if one could automate some of this stuff.
    Thanks

see this link how to enable it system wide. I use it in Mail. very handy.

  • Use system-wide Text replacement to superscript characters? 1st, 2nd, etc

I wanted to use the new text substitution in Snow Leopard to transform typed "1st" and "2nd's" into their 'correct' form with superscripted numerical suffixes. I tried to just easy do it by copying a corrected form out of Pages where I had created a proper "1st,", "2nd," and so on, but when I would paste them into the system prefs pane, they would just paste as regular numerals & letters instead of the superscripted variety.
I then thought to see if I could find the proper superscripted letters in the character viewer but came up empty. Does anyone know of a way to get this working? it's minor and all, but would be a nice addition.

    1) yes, I know that
    2) how would that help this situation any even if I hadn't? i didn't say "I can't get my text replacements to be accepted in any applications," I stated that I cannot find a way to get the Text System Prefs pane to accept supercripted numerical suffixes.
Sorry to be an *** about it, but everyone's always lambasting posters for not being clear enough or specific enough in what they're trying to do, and I was very clear about what I was asking and even in giving specifics on what i had done to try and remedy the situation myself.
I'm not asking how to get text replacement to work in apps, I'm asking how to get the system-wide text replacement to accept superscripted numerical suffixes in the first place. Maybe it's not possible? maybe it is and I'm missing something, but if so it's specific to the prefs pane, not other applications.

  • Text substitution does not work on all apps

Text substituiton feature works fine in Mac Mail, but does not work in Microsoft Word, excel and others.
    How can I fix this?

Word and Excel do not support the system level text substitution routines. These work only with native apps like Mail, TextEdit and so forth. Some third-party apps can also tap into them.
    The workaround is simple:
    Preferences>AutoCorrect
Word will allow you to create any number of text substitutions. They won't, though, interact with native apps like Mail.
Microsoft Outlook, being more of a native OS X app, does support the system level text functions.

  • System wide jerky scrolling and delay while typing and selecting text

    Hi,
I'm new to Mac (first laptop) and I'm noticing just now that the system response feels very low. There's a significant delay when showing characters after typing as well as selecting text, and jerkiness when scrolling anything, from Finder window contents to Safari web pages.
I take care of not installing suspicious software, I use a limited account for daily taks and haven't installed anything lately. Processor usage is as low as ever. Plenty of memory is free (4GB installed) and free disk space is enough (66 GB).
What is happening? Not even Windows behaved like this!
    Please help!!!!

I had installed 10.5.8 and it's kind of iffy with file permissions...
The system-wide jerkiness went away with a reboot, but the Safari jerkiness I could attribute to specially heavy surfing I never did before on that day.
I'm accustomed to my Mac working speedy all the time and because of that I can be unforgiving, and it's wrong. I would never complain of jerkiness on my XP PC when opening 30+ browser instances and 100+ tabs in total because I know XP can't handle it, but that was the kind of thing I threw at Safari. And the experienced jerkiness wasn't even on all pages, just a few.

  • W2K8 & Win7 - Setting system-wide Trusted file locations not working

Win 2008 Network, Win 7 workstations.
RE: Setting system-wide trusted file locations
I have an application using Flash stored on a network location that accesses other files in the same location.  This causes the security warning "The following local application... is trying to communicate with this internet-enabled..."  I can add the location to the trusted sites in the Setting Manager and the warning goes away.  It is not practical however to do this on every machine on the network.  I have tried the FlashPlayerTrust directory and mms.cfg file and neither of these seem to work.  Is there a trick to getting the FlashPlayerTrust directory to work properly.  If I could get this working, I could create a script that copies this file to all machines on the network.
Any help you be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Todd,
Can you please provide just a little more detail?
    * When you say "accessess", what API is being used?  Are the paths to the other files relative, file: URI http: URI, other?
    * In the FlashPlayerTrust directory, are you using the same path notation as appears in the Settings Manager?  What's a sample {filename}.{ext} being used?
    Thanks!

  • System wide PDF presets location is not working in CC

On both Mac and PC, the system wide location for PDF settings (.joboptions) does not work anymore.
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings (on a Mac)
It is illogical to remove this feature. Even if that folder does not store the main default presets, which are now stored in each application, it still needs to be looked at and loaded from. It's actually illogical to store the same preset in multiple locations (i.e. each application). If there is a preset that is only for a certain application (e.g. Illustrator Default), this could be put in the application folder, but all others like High Quality, Prepress, PDF/X should be in a central location, i.e. where they used to be.
I know that each user can manually load into their own PDF presets, which then do appear in all suite apps, but this has to be done every time a new user logs into a computer.
The central location meant that all suite apps would see a custom set of presets automatically across the entire suite and across multiple versions of the suite. The other advantage to the central location is that the presets would appear in square brackets, in other words read only, so they cannot be changed by the user without saving as a new file.
Having users manually load and be able to change the presets kind of defeats the purpose of having a preset, certainly in our environment, where we need these settings to be consistent across all apps, all computers and all users.
Please put this feature back or at least honour the central location that used to be used.

    Hi,
As per the description, I understand that your Office 2013 cannot open files through a network share directly.
I would like to know that how many clients/users are affected by this in your environment. It could be some specific user account settings, that the Office applications are being affected by.
I'd first suggest you try with a new Windows user profile, then verify result.

  • When I select text, system wide, and delete it, why is the succeeding text then selected?

When I select text, system wide, and delete it, why is the succeeding text then selected?
This doesn't happen all the time, but it's happened enough for me to notice it and get super annoyed by it.
Here's an example. If I have the following text:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
And I highlight quick brown and then press delete, I get: (The red shows the selected text)
The fox jumps over the lazy dog.
So when I then start typing, more text is removed than I want. Sometimes this effect carries over, so that the next couple words are selected once I start typing.
It's wonderfully annoying. So I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing such issues or if anyone might have an idea on how to get rid of this problem.
    Thanks.

Ooops. I haven't updated my sig in a while. I'm on 10.8.2 and it happens on a late 2008 Alu Macbook.

  • System-Wide Formatting not applied to Dashboard Column Prompt in 11g

In OBIEE 11g, I have a dashboard column prompt with a date column. I use this column in the analysis and have made the column properties (formatting) a system-wide default for that column.
When I use the column in a dashboard column prompt, it does not show this formatting.
Any ideas why it might not work?

So from what I understand about your question, the system wide default data format you have set for the date column is not following the same format when you use it as a dashboard column prompt. The system wide format only applies for analysis purposes and not for prompts in 11g.
