Text Substitutions in Pages

Text Substitutions in Pages only seems to work when you are typing.  How can I make it work on pasted text as well ?
If I take the same text and paste it into TextEdit (with the same substitutions installed in Text/Language Preferences) it immediately makes the substitutions.
Annoying having to use two applications to get the result.

Actually not quite right.  When I paste into TextEdit I have to run substitutions.  But in Pages there does not seem to be a way to do that on pre-existing text.

  • There doesn't seem to be 'symbol and text substitution' on yosemite, i.e. cannot shorten 1/2 or 1/4 as in pages 09

Has anyone found 'symbol and text substitution' on Pages 5 please?  On Pages 09 you could change the style of fractions i.e. 1/2, 1/4, 2/3 etc.  Thanks

Text Substitution has moved out of the applications and into System Preferences > Keyboard Text. Fractions that are not present can be constructed from the special characters panel (Edit ▸ Special Characters…). Search on the word fraction.
If you want to roll your own, then choose the gear selector in the upper left corner of the special characters toolbar, and customize list… . Choose Digits - All. Once Digits - All appears in your left category panel, select it, and then scroll down to the fraction components. These are the small numbers before and after the forward slash. Double-click to place in the With category of the Keyboard Text window.

  • How can I make text substitutions learn the correct capitalization of an acronym?

I love the text substitutions function in the Mac OS, and the auto grammar and spelling corrections are usually really useful, but there is one particular instance that is driving me insane. In my job, I end up using the acronym "TAs" (for "teaching assistants") all the time. Mac constantly autocorrects this to "Tas." I have tried adding "tas" to text substitutions in the settings and telling it to substitute "TAs," but it just autocorrects my substitution to "Tas." I have tried telling the OS to learn the spelling "TAs," but that hasn't worked either. I don't want to turn off capitalization correction altogether because I usually find it useful. Is there a way to fix this one word? The only workaround I have found is that it doesn't correct me when I pluralize with an apostrophe (as in "TA's"), but I am really not a fan of that.
I am running Mavericks 10.9.5, if that helps.

    Hi Laura_mac !
Does it depend on the application?
    Using Yosemite I added
    tas to Keyboard ====> Text
    so that TAs becomes TAs
    It worked via Safari 8.03
    via Pages and Numbers (3.5.2)
It did not work in BBEdit
    nor Firefox
    nor Word
If you do a lot of text substitution I found the following app quite helpful.  You can customize to a great degree.

  • Symbol and Text Substitution not working correctly

    Hello,
in „Language & Text“ I have the following symbol and text substitutions enabled, which aren’t working in Pages version 5.1.1 (iMac 2011, Yosemite 10.10.1):
„- - >“ (written without blank space between the characters) which should be substituted to „➜“.
In Safari this works, but in Pages it isn’t working.
Other substitutions work in Pages, for example:
„! ! s s“ (written without blank space between characters) is substituted to „ẞ“ in Safari and Pages.
    Can somebody help me?

In Pages v5.5.1 and Yosemite 10.10.1, I can reproduce the injected space issue resulting from your Keyboard > Text substitution for „-->” to „→” . Even if you remove one of the '-', Pages will still insert the space before the right arrow in the result. This is a bug.
Fix: „..>” will produce the arrow without the injected space.

  • How can I add a text substitution for changing st in 1st to superscript?

I would like to add text substitutions for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. so the letters show up as superscript. I attempted to change the st, nd & rd to superscript in Pages and tried to paste it, but it simply changed it back to regular format. How can I go about changing this?
Thank you in advance for your help!

It only works in TextEdit consistently for me. Mail forgets as soon as I sent the message. Pages doesn't even have an Edit > Substitutions menu, nor it is there anything in the inspector.
So I use [Typinator|http://www.ergonis.com/products/typinator>, which works system-wide, no fuss, and it's more powerful than the built-in text substitution. Another alternative is [Text Expander|http://smilesoftware.com/TextExpander>.
If the free trails and price still can't help you decide, see this [discussion|http://www.macheist.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=13544] comparing the two.
Edit: I eat my words. Getting Typinator to substitute superscript is tricker than I thought.

  • Text Substitution NOT system-wide!

The text substitution functionality in 10.6 (changing "teh" into "the" etc. automatically) works like a charm in TextEdit but NOT in Mail, Pages, Numbers, Word etc. What am I missing? Pages and Numbers have their own section of text substitution (Preferences Menu - Auto Correction). Does one have to re-encode all the substitutions in these applications? Seems odd as this is presented in 10.6 as a system-wide service (System Preferences - Language and Text - Text)... Especially in Mail this saves a lot of time. Will have to revert to TextExpander... Anybody else bothered with this issue? Found a workaround?
    Looking forward to your views!
    Hendrik

It works fine in Mail. I've been using it for some time.
You have to turn it on, and there are no preferences for it like they are in TextEdit. Right click in the compose menu and enable it. It must be enabled separately for each application.
You can do the same for Safari as well, when you are entering text in a text box, right click and enable it.

  • Text Substitution: using subscript.

I'd like to set up some automatic text substitutions for chemical compounds, with correct subscript (i.e O2, H2O, CO2 etc).
Text formatting doesn't seem to work in the automatic corrections pane.
This seems like a fairly simple request; is there something I'm missing?
    Thanks!

Instead you must insert the Unicode subscript characters from the Character Palette (assuming the ones you need are available).
Below the matrix for superscripts. As a rule, shaping should not be hardcoded (directly drawn) in character space but softcoded (indirectly drawn) in glyph space.
For all superscript numbers the Character Info > Related Characters window reports that NFD, NFC, NFKD and NFKC are related.
For all superscript numbers Apple TextEdit and Apple Pages do not consider NFD/NFC related to NFKD/NFKC for content-based searching.
For all superscript numbers, it is not possible to predict which search systems will set a synonym for NFKD/NFKC searching.
For superscript numbers one, two, and three there are commonly glyph codes for dedicated glyph designs in TrueType 1:1990 (because these character codes are included in ISO-IEC 8859-1:1987).
For superscript numbers four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and zero there are commonly no glyph codes for dedicated glyph designs in TrueType simple.
Therefore, the rendering system takes the baseline glyph design, scales it down, lifts it up, and remaps the glyph code to the superscript character code.
For the purpose of searching, it would be significantly better if Apple get support for smart shaping into PDF, since shaping superscript glyphs with superscript characters introduces a complexity in searching.
It would also be significantly better for the everyday enduser, if Apple introduced a correction to the Related Characters window that showed standard universal synonyms.
Anything that is not a synonym across all four normalisations should be shown, since trying to do shaping in character space instead of in glyph space (where shaping belongs) is at risk in the current interface.
Which was what I was trying to say at the start of 2008 -:).
    Superscript one : NFD ¹, NFC ¹, NFKD 1, NFKC 1
    Superscript two : NFD ², NFC ², NFKD 2, NFKC 2
    Superscript three : NFD ³, NFC ³, NFKD 3, NFKC 3
    Superscript four : NFD ⁴, NFC ⁴, NFKD 4, NFKC 4
    Superscript five : NFD ⁵, NFC ⁵, NFKD 5, NFKC 5
    Superscript six : NFD ⁶, NFC ⁶, NFKD 6, NFKC 6
    Superscript seven : NFD ⁷, NFC ⁷, NFKD 8, NFKC 8
    Superscript eight : NFD ⁸, NFC ⁸, NFKD 8, NFKC 8
    Superscript nine : NFD ⁹, NFC ⁹, NFKD 9, NFKC 9
    Superscript zero : NFD ⁰, NFC ⁰, NFKD 0, NFKC 0

  • Text substitution not taking new entries?

I have been using text substitution as an abbreviation expander for common words. All has gone well until tonight when I tried to add two new entries. They show up in the list just like all of the others but these two do not expand. All of those I have previously added work fine -- just not the two new ones. Either something has happened or I have forgotten some important step. I have opened and closed system preferences -- no effect. I re-booted the computer -- no effect.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem? And, more importantly, how do I solve it!

I realized that the substitution list for Pages wasn't the same as the generic list. I put the new entries in both list and all works as it should.

  • Symbol & Text Substitution

Pages 09 seems to use a similar symbol & text substitution facility to Snow Leopard; why it doesn't use the OS's I don't know. But I found a way of entering another 2,000 typos in the OS's version through this web-site http://db.tidbits.com/article/10567 - very worthwhile. Now I want to do the same for Pages symbol & text substitution. Can anyone tell me the name of the file in Pages that stores the symbol and text substitution entries?

Pages was creates about a year before Snow Leopard which probably is one reason for not using SL's Auto correction. SL's Autocorrection doesn't always work in other apps (Safari is one example) at all times in my experience.
In Pages preferences you can find the auto correction. You can read about it on page 113 in the English version of PAges User Guide, downloadable from the Help menu in Pages.

  • OSX accent popup menu & OSX text substitution?

Two features of OSX that I love dearly is 1) add accents by holding a character down 2) add custom text substitutions that autocomplete automatically. I think they were added near Mountain Lion so this is relatively old features.
However, neither of these works with my Illustrator CS5.
What I want to know is, does any of these work with the newer version of Illustrator? That would made me jump to a newer version.

    Or, more simply --
In Safari, open a Google page, print using PDF services to open in any external viewer. The links show up properly as links and are clickable.
Now, open a Wikipedia page, print using PDF services to open in any external viewer. *The links don't show up as links* -- although they are clickable on mouse-over.

You can't change the way Pages import .doc files.
It was never written that it reproduce exactly the original one.
From my point of view, as I refuse to give a cent to M...soft, the best way to deal with documents issued by their Office suite is to use the free libreOffice.

  • How to link text-boxes in Pages 5.2?

How do you link text-boxes in Pages 5.2?

Thank you for your help; it is appreciated. I suspected that, but am still disappointed. I am finding myself getting more and more disenchanted with Apple products in the past few years. I've been a faithful fan, user and promoter since the 1980s, but I am starting to seriously doubt their competency in the past few years with the Pages 5 version as well as what iOS7 continues to do to my iPhone (as my prime examples). Instead of enhancing my life and work, Apple is beginning to waste my time -- a lot of it! Perhaps it is time for a change.... I don't want to, but I am starting to look for other alternatives.

  • How to link text frames in Pages 5.2?

How to link text frames in Pages 5.2?

The correct term in Pages is Text Boxes, and true linking is not implemented in v5.2. You can Unite, Intersect, Subtract, and Exclude multiple Text Boxes via the Arrange panel. These attributes only appear when two or more Text Boxes are selected. Also, on the Arrange menu, you will need Object Placement set to Move with Text, and the Text Wrap set to None for more accurate positioning.
In the following example, there was initially a Text Box with overflowing text that was duplicated. With both Text Boxes selected and aligned, I could then use the Unite feature from the Arrange panel. This allowed the text to flow into the second box. Selecting text in one box and dragging upwards continues the text selection between both boxes. Hoefler italic applied in one box is applied to both. Appropriately placed, another trip to the Arrange panel to enable Text Wrap around and text fit adjustments.

  • I am trying to highlight text on multiple pages, but Adobe will not autoscroll via cursor.

I am trying to highlight text on multiple pages, but when I select the text and bring the cursor to the bottom of the screen Adobe does not advance the document. How do I make it so I can highlight from page to page without having to release the mouse button?
Also, how do I get adobe to realize that there is a header and footer on each page, but the actual text in the file is in two columes. Is there a way to make this clear and embade it in the document so other programs recognize this too?

Regarding your first question, change the view to Single Page Continuous.

  • I cant copy/paste from an article to my web site, get a Mozilla Rich Text Editing demo page will not work.HELP

Tried to copy/paste from an article to my web site and got a "cannot copy /paste " warning and was directed to a security perferences site that said that Mozilla Rich Text Editing demo page will not work.
Tried to find my Firefox profile directory using the start menu and was directed to hit enter to go to web. Feel like i am getting run around.

Let's start with something very basic, and that is, you do not need to use the paste button on most websites. The button just reads what is on your clipboard and sticks it into the form. You can do that yourself using Ctrl+v or right-click>Paste.
For your security, I suggest using those standard Windows keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+x cut, Ctrl+c copy, Ctrl+v paste) or the context menu.
Occasionally you will find a paste button that runs a clean-up script or otherwise does something useful. That is where the (admittedly a bit complicated) instructions come in handy.
To open your active profile folder, you can use:
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Which help article are you using for the modifications?
Finally, please be cautious in opening up your clipboard to sites. You may have stuff you copied from other pages or other programs that you do not want to share with most sites.
