Text-to-speech is jumping over sections of text.

Text-to-speech will sometimes miss saying sections of text.
My guess is that it is when the processor has too much other work to do (ie. rendering the remainder of a page).
The only flaw is that during times when it stops speaking, it still continues to move through the text.  As a result when it continues to speek it has left some of the words out.
Is there an option to prevent it jumping sections of text when overloaded?

What is the source of the text? Are the non-spoken works different? Is there a pattern to them?
An example would be the selection of a paragraph of text from a web page in safari.
The text is selected, "Speak" is selected from the popup options and it may start to speak, but pause for a period of time and when it is talking again it has jumped over a number of words.

  • Text-to-speech no longer working in any PDF apps in Mac 10.8.5.

Text-to-speech is no longer working in any PDF apps in Mac 10.8.4/5.  Does anyone know the software component that passes highlight text over to the speech synthesiser?   How is this process different in PDF's compared to any other text format?
So far I have tried Preview, Skim, PDFView, Safari, Evernote and Adobe Reader with the result: silence.  The only defference being Adobe Reader which speaks the name of the document and not the highlighted text.  I've re-applied the Mac OS10.8.5 como-update, fixed prefs, ran FSCheck and changed user.  I've tried every method of triggering the text-to-speech function (including custom scripts). Text-to-speech works perfectly in every other respect exept when working with PDF's. When Maveriks arrives I will do a clean install and rebuild my data manually which I'm pretty certain will fix the problem but it would be extremely rewarding to find an actual solution and learn something in the process.

Rawr! I got it to work, sort of. I think I tried so hard because I hated the thought of using alsa-oss. And I discovered a couple bugs in spd-conf! Does anyone care? lol
Basically, I redid my TTS-related configs & put them under ~/ instead of /usr/share, and ran "festival --server" & "speech-dispatcher -s" as a normal user. I also added myself to the "audio" group somewhere along the line, but I don't think that was the issue.
I'm almost afraid to reboot, because, although speech-dispatcher can be started at boot-time through rc.conf's DAEMONS array, I don't think festival can---at least, not in the same way as it can on distros that have the script /etc/default/festival. I'm about to see if I can track down that file, and hope I don't break everything somehow.
KTTSMgr still doesn't see any synthesizers, but I got past the "dummy module" message. Now I'm hoping I'll get some help from someone who actually knows what to do (as opposed to me).
    Take care, all
    H
P.S One small complaint: Although my speechd.conf specified port 6561, speech-dispatcher's tests showed that it was looking for a connection on port 6560 first, before scanning to find the real port. I had to change to port 6560 to stop the behaviour, even though I never customized the port number in the first place.

  • Tips for speaking text (text to speech)

I have just added these notes to an OS X tips page that I created sveral years ago:
Visually impaired users should find the built-in Text-to-speech technology of OS X useful. Go to System Preferences/ Speech/ Text to Speech. Tick the "Speak selected text.." box. Enter a keyboard shortcut (I use Control-F19 as the keys are diagonally opposite on my keybaord. You will need to select text for this to work. To select all text from a document press Command-A. Then press Control-F19 to start the computer speaking. Unfortunately Microsoft apps like Word (2004) do not have this speech capability. You will need to copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the text into Text Edit before invoking Text to Speech. PDF documents in Preview and email in Mail work fine.
    The tips page is:
    http://users.tpg.com.au/aoaug/mac_osx.html
Having a temporary patch over one eye I thought I should invoke this technology but found it difficult to locate some basic tips on the net. If you have some good links/tips please post them on this thread.

It's a bug. I have submitted feedback on this point to Apple. I really hope they take notice, because the male voice is horrible.
There is a workaround though - go to Settings/General/International/Region Format, and change the region to "Isle of Man".

  • Text - To - Speech.. Captivate 6

      Hello,
Is there an easier way to install the new voices for Adobe Captvate 6?   I have installed Neo Speech invoices on my computer like Captivate instructed, but my Adobe Application Manager is somehow broken and won't install the voices to Captivate.  I have tried to download and re-install Adobe Application Manger, but that hasn't work -- I still get the same error message.   Any help would be appreciated!
       Ryan

    Hi Priyank,
Thanks for getting back to me.  Unfortunately, the error is in German.
It basically just says : Adobe Application Manager could possibly be damaged.  Please download and install a new copy.
If problems continue to arise, contact support for help. (I attached the error message below.)
The problem is that my copy of Adobe Application Manager is fine.  I just downloaded Adobe After Effects with it.

  • Text to Speech - cursor over to talk instead of selecting text?

I typically use TTS in Chrome and select the text, right click and select speech. I know there's a keyboard shortcut instead of right clicking, but is there a way to make TTS work like Narrator in WIndows 8? There, you put the cursor over the text and it automatically starts talking, which is less cumbersome.

It turns out that speech is not completely broken. I was able to fix this by recreating the disfunctional slides from scratch in the latest Keynote and OS X. Particularly affected were the slides that had complicated builds. It was an annoyance but got the job done.
At the link that I provided above are two links. You evidently downloaded the Self-Presenting Presentation (the first link) but did not download the Self-Presenting Keynote file (the second link). Once you do so you will be able to open the presentation in Keynote and dissect how the tags were applied.
I see no way to export that Keynote Presentation to Quicktime so that it includes the voice over. I was able to accomplish this by using SnapzPro. See http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/. This is also a must have application if you want to produce video podcast.
This morning I got the presentation that I was working on up to my .Mac site. You can view it at http://web.mac.com/igot2n0/McFatterTechnicalCenter/Orientation.html.
One other problem that I encountered is that this text to speech method does not allow slides that DO NOT have voice over narration but consist of builds. The intro slide and the last two slides of the presentation were exported to Quicktime separately and later added to the main presentation that I exported using SnapzPro. It seems that this is a feature that could be easily added in later revisions. If Apple does not include it in a later revision, I will keep doing it the way that I did in this presentation.

  • How can i import abbreviations in text to speech without using voice over?

Hi, I have recently discoverd text to speech on my macbook, and I like what it can do. I would like  to edit the way it pronounces some abbreviations. I discovered this was possible with voiceover. I would like to do this even when voice over is turned off so I can highlight a text i want to read on a pdf and it would read everything as I want it to. Maybe there is a third party app that makes this possible?(This could come in handy when I want something to use it for biology books where there are a lot of abbreviations used, like ADP/ATP/NHDAP/...)

    Hi,
You can load your data automatically in the Multisim word generator. Follow these steps:
    - Save your data file (in excel .xslx ir .csv format) on your computer
    - Change the extension of the file to ".dp"
    - Double-click the word generator in Multisim and click on Set...
    - In the Settings dialog box, click on Load and then Accept
    - This will prompt you to select the .dp file you have on your computer, select it and you're good to go
However, in Multisim you have the option of creating your own custom simulation analysis and instrument.
I will try creating the instrument and send it back to you but it might take some time.
Multisim and LabVIEW are very powerful in test automation, with the custom instruments you create for Multisim you don't need to export your data file into excel from LabVIEW (or MathCAD or other tools) and then reload it into Multisim. The test procedure is automated instead.
Please check this reference design about automated simulation
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/7825
Here is how you can create your own custom measurement tool in Multisim and LabVIEW, but as I mentioned, I will create the word generator and come back to you anyways

  • Use voice over speech as text-to-speech

    Hello,
I really like Mac OS X Lion's option to download new high-quality speech voices, and I have made a habit of listening to my e-books by enabling the "option + esc" in speech preferences as a shortcut to read highlighted text.
However, any unfamiliar words are read incorrectly, I have no way to modify a "pronounciation" list like you can in voice-over utility (speech -> pronounciation). This is a huge inconvenience as I can create a proper dictionary there for pronouncing things correctly, but with text-to-speech I cannot. Anyone know if there's a way to tap into this pronounciation dictionary? If you think this is worthwhile feature you should post here anyway, maybe Apple will take note
    Regards,
    Denis

You can wait unless the problem you have is stopping you from completing the job. In that case...
You can do this anytime. Connect the new drive and change the scratch drive preferences in SYSTEM SETTINGS. Do not create folders, simply select the root of the drive you wish to use. Once you have done so for both the Capture Scratch and Render files, FCP will create project specific folders on the new drive. Save the project and close FCP. You will then have to copy the elements from the old scratch drive to the appropriate folders on the new drive. Launch FCP, open your project and then reconnect the media in your project, directing it to the new drive. FCP will likely not connect to the render files once they have been moved so you may have to re-render your sequence.
Before you do any of that, you might try trashing FCP Preferences first to see if that fixes the problem and allows you to finish the job.

  • Any third party apps to highlight words on Mac as they're read by the built in Text-to-Speech?

    Hello everyone,
I want to use my Mac to it's full potential!  And I believe this is the community that can help.  Is there a way for my mac to highlight the words which are read by the built in text-to-speech voices?
I really love the VoiceDream application for the iPad, and I'm looking for an equivalent or isotope of similar features on the Mac.
The answers to this question can benefit:
1.)  People who have trouble reading without voice-over.
2.)  Foreign language learners who want to follow along as the text is being read.
3.)  People who have difficulty focusing while they read.
If you know of any amalgamation of solutions to this problem, I will really appreciate it!  I am currently experimenting with using text-to speech as a way to read my textbooks for better comprehension and to remember more information. I really don't want to move to the VoiceDream app because everything is centralized on my Mac, and I like the variety of voices already available for free on the Mac.
I recently got my MacBook Air mid-2014 Model with OSX 10.9.4 installed, so this is what I'm working with.
As a last resort, if there is a solution that will work on a Windows computer, I can install Parallel Desktop to take advantage of an application if it has a comprehensive solution that would make it worth it to install that platform.
The perfect solution would really be if there was a Mac version of VoiceDream Reader, but seeing as there isn't, I would love to find out how I can make due with what is out there, or maybe even petition some software developers to create a solution to this problem that would enhance the study-toolbox of students and life-long learners.
Thank-you for any answers.  I appreciate the community vibe!

Did you have a look at GhostReader. It works in demo mode for 14 days to test it.

  • Text-to-speech not working in preview 8.0 for .pdf files !

Text-to-speech is working in every thing expect in preview after the new upgrade yosemite. Please if somebody has any remedy please let me know or I request apple to bring a new update to over come this problem.

I have found that Text-to-Speech works just fine in Yosemite's Preview application — without changing any standard settings. I added additional voices, and it works equally well with these too. You should not expect Text-to-Speech functionality with text that is incorporated into a graphic though.
Both Edit > Speech  > Start Speaking, and after enabling in Text-to-Speech Preferences, Speak selected text when the key is pressed (option+Esc).

  • Import text to speech script

    Hi,
I am using Adobe Captivate4. I would like to know whether is there any provision of importing the text as speech script and then convert to speech to add audio to the slide?

    Hi Rodward,
    Thanks for your reply.
This is really helpful for editing the CC text rather than editing slide by slide.
But my question is about editing the speech text in similar way.
Whether we can edit all the speech text  in one document, which we wish to have as voice-over in each slide and then import. So that the modified voice-over text will be inserted in respective slides and we can have voice-over(audio).

  • Text to Speech conversion - Does anyone recommend any software?

I am currently looking at a way to convert the written text in my captivate modules into spoken word without recording a voice over. Ive only just started digging into it and wondered if Captviate itself has a way of doing this, or if any kind of 3rd party applications plug into Captviate to do it? Im on mac if that helps.
If neither of the above is possible, does anyone recommend any text to speech tools. I am really after something more along the lines of Siri etc rather than the old school more robotic sounding converters. I really am after something more natural and more believable as human.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Jay

I have just discovered the in built content. The standard ones arent great so I have installed the Neospeech content. Ive just posted a problem I have encountered with those though. I would prefer an UK English male as its to represent a character I have created but I could settle with Paul if I cant find a better alternative.
I had considered voicing it myself but I dont want the character to become me or vice versa as the content will be used in my organisation and people will associate him with me.
