Texting longer text messages or any media (pictures/video/sound etc) being sent requires data to be active. However, it does not count against your data caps.
Since you have an iPhone, you must also be aware of the difference between iMessage and SMS Text messages. The iPhone, by default, will send an iMessage when sending another text message to anyone else with an iPhone, iTouch, or iPad. This does use your data if you are not connected to wifi. In Settings, you can turn iMessage off, and then all of your texts will go through Verizon.
Also understand- iMessage will use wifi when connected to wifi, but would need cellular data connection to work when not connected to wifi. Regular SMS text messages that are long or any media will always use the cellular data and not wifi, so will not send if cellular data is turned off, even if on wifi. However, this does not count against your cap.

  • Ipad 3 Suddenly Using Data Plan Uncontrollably / Exhausting Data Plan

I have an iPad 3 (64 GB) for a year, and previously an iPad 2, both with AT&T data plans. Never before have I had the following happen, after a couple of years using a 1-3 GB data plan. And I've never had ANY problem with my data plans before or unusual usage. (My iPads have been trouble free too.)
I used my iPad late Saturday night and went to bed. Normally I close all apps, but not always. My 64GB iPad is nearly full and I just got a warning from Apple about my iCloud storage being almost full.
When I woke up Sunday AM, all my data (about 2/3rds of 3 GB) had been used up.  When I called AT&T, that confirmed that my dataplan had run continuously from about my time of going to bed up until the morning when it ran out of data, about 10 hours total.  They couldn't give me more details than that.  The person I spoke to didn't seem very knowledgable about iPads but we did discuss that possibly an app ran in the background or an advertisement on a webpage, and this 'ate' my data uncontrollably.
At&T gave me 250 MB of data complimentary to help me troubleshoot the problem. I made sure everything was closed, everything was backed up, synced, etc. (as I normally would,) then I rebooted my iPad.  I made sure my data monitoring programs (which had previously been uninstalled since I never used them, but I reinstalled DataUsage,) and IMMEDIATELY my data started being sucked up. I was a third through 250 MB in maybe 2 minutes.  I was also watching the "Usage"  in my iPad's "General - Usage - Cellular Usage" area and as I kept rezero-ing it, it just kept jumping up to 1000 KB, most of it as 'sent', in jumps of about 200 KB every couple of seconds before I would reset, over and over.
I finally turned off cellular data and here I am.
Does anyone have a 'roadmap' to specifically troubleshoot this? I am not sure when/what last apps were updated. (Is there a way to pull this info up?)
ANY help will be so much appreciated.  I am having some trouble finding information on how to troubleshoot this.
I so also have an iPhone5, and nothing unusual going on there from what I can tell (I had them review my data usage there, and all seems 'normal'. Same for cellular, calls, texts, etc.)
Should I just go to an apple store?

When I am home, I am celluar only at this point. I was not connected to wifi at the location where the cellular data was used to exhaustion. So being on cellular and leaving it on overnight is something I've done for almost 2 years and never had a problem like this.
Is there a way to troubleshoot what apps might have been using that data, specifically? Or whether it was repeatedly checking email (which would be a new problem, since all my email previously has been normal and fine previously and I haven't changed any aspect of that for ...probably a year.
Is there a new glitch out there that might have caused this? That's more what I'm curious about. Or a way to methodically go back and see what specifically was using that data. Can I do that? Is there something out there that will tell me what it was?
Thanks so much Tom! That is a great answer under different circumstances

  • App plan use data plan or iphone 5 have gps unit?

I use the plan app this week and I take road whit out cell service and my plan app
Work correctly. The iphone 5 have gps or it take data plan?

        Hey ccasteel89!
If Serena gets a phone hug then I'm hoping that I can get some love to with the information provided. Right off the bat, $570 is data charges would also have me going into cardiac arrest so I appreciate your concern. From the sound of things, it seems that the representative you worked with filed a billing investigation (and that's exactly what needed to be done). Have you received your call and resolution yet?
In regards to your question, there is one thing I would like to check with your device. Do you have the most up to date iOS 6.1 software? You can check by going to settings > general > software update. This should help a great deal.

Why am I showing a use of data when I've only accessed via my wireless network and have not enabled any background activities.

Visual voicemail uses cellular data, not wi-fi.
Wi-fi is also turned off and cellular data takes over after some period with the iphone asleep.

  • Curve 9300, no data plan, gmail on wifi only

I plan to buy a BB Curve 9300 but before I want to be 100% sure that I can configure it to be auto warned if
I get a mail on my gmail account but only via wifi because I have no data plan.
    Thank you for your help;

OK then here is your problems answer
The BB just developed for business men persons and not designed to be the way you want. It is a professional bussiness handset not like any other like Nokia, Sony Ericsion whic is perfect for kids and youngers like you. These sets support to recevie emails without any datapackage but for BB case you cannot.
You must have a dataplant inorder to get email notifications. If you dont believ me the try it by your self concern with the forum call every technical person you know and tell your problem and aks him to on the email notification services with using data plan. If any body does then please let me know.
I hope your problem is solved
    Thanks and Regards

  • Cant finish data plan for Ipad2 from singapore is 50GB ?

In singapore the Teleco operators is giving out 50 GB data plans as a package .
we will needs a application to use it as in data plan for sms to use up our plan .
any other application on Ipads that used data plan for communication .

Stacyanne, sorry to hear of that bad experience at the VZW store.  I got my daughter an iPad2 for Christmas as well and she recently signed up for the $20 PRE-PAID (1GB) Data Plan.  I just went on the VZW website and saw that Plan was still available - as follows (from website page http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/plans/?page=mobileBroadband):
    Prepaid Mobile Broadband Plans
Pay as you go. That way you only pay for the data you really need.
    Tablets
    Monthly Access
    1GB Monthly Data Allowance
    $20
    2GB Monthly Data Allowance
    $30
    5GB Monthly Data Allowance
    $50
    10GB Monthly Data Allowance
    $80
No Reconnection fees, and no overage charges. Tablet plans not availabe on all tablet models.
This is the same Plan I have and I haven't seen anything that states this is no longer available.  You can sign up for this right on your iPad2.  You can also turn it on and off - in other words, if you don't see yourself needing it for a month or so you can cancel the Plan and then re-enroll when you see a time coming up when you will need it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I use my 4S to make calls and texts with just wifi and no service contract or data plan?

I met a guy who claims he does not have phone service - no contract - no data plan - he bought a "hotspot" and makes calls, texts, facetime, email, fecebook, everything - total communication everywhere all the time for free.  It was a casual meeting and I didn't get his contact info. to verify and research.  IS THIS POSSIBLE?

this was the clearest answer - BUT Viber is only free if the people I call have Viber, right?  What about free text with voice (Pinger).  Also thinking of a Magic Jack.  I'm moving to Mexico - that's why all these questions.  I have a Mexican SIM card (my Iphone is factory unlocked), but loading it costs an arm and a leg.  Same as when I go to France - I just switch out my SIM card, and don't phone the US - just FACETIME, etc. in WIfI zones.  My MAIN concern is being able to call my elderly parents in PA, and unfortunately, they don't have smart phones.  Landline.  Thank you for all the answers!

  • Why do i keep getting 'to use data on your phone, you'l need add on pack' texts?

I ordered a pay as you go sim card from EE a few weeks ago to use in my iphone 5 as a second/work phone. The package on the sim is a 'top up £1 and get some free mins and texts (no data allowance)' plan. I put the sim card in my phone and have left the phone at home and not put any credit on it yet or used it at all, ( not even any apps/calls etc ). Every day when i come to look at the phone there are atleast 4 text messages a day from EE saying 'To use data on your phone, you'll need an add-on pack Click here to buy'. I am getting sick of this as i have turned mobile data off in the settings and my phone is constantly connected to my home wi-fi so cannot see how it would even by using any data. Today i have come home to 8 of these messages! I refuse to top my phone up with credit and start using it until this is sorted as im not paying for any data usage i wont use! There are no apps running in the background, and nothing has been set up on the phone that would require internet usage i.e. emails / weather etc. Please can someone help me...  Thanks

Hi,  I also recieved thousands of messages saying that I need to buy add-on, that's anoying.  I called EE for 3 hours and they are not able to deal with that. They just try to make my mobile phone responsible. What can I do?  Thank you.

  • Can I use an Android phone without a data plan?

Please read all of this before responding. You will not be helping when you show a clear misunderstanding of my question.
I do not need a data plan. Everywhere I go has Wi-Fi, and I am perfectly content to not have internet connectivity in the event that I don't have Wi-Fi. What I want to know is if I can buy a phone from a store (not from Verizon or a contract renewal) and replace my current phone with it without needing a data plan. There is NO software/hardware reason why I couldn't, and the only reason I would need to is as a Verizon requirement.
As an additional question, if Verizon doesn't allow it, is there any workaround?
I want an android phone not to have ubiquitous connection to social media. I want an android phone to have platform to run software on in addition to making/receiving calls and text messages. I would not utilize a data plan and it would be a waste of money.
    Additional info:
Can I use an Android phone that I buy from a retailer on my Verizon plan without adding data? There's no hardware or software reason why I need a data plan, and there IS a point to having a smart phone without a data plan: Wi-Fi. I don't need to have redundant internet access.  The only reason conceivable for why I'd need a data plan is because Verizon wants more money for no additional service (I wouldn't USE connectivity provided by a data plan). I don't want to have a mobile platform for running software and a phone filling my pockets, I'd like it to be in one. All the connectivity I need is for calls and text messaging.

    I stand corrected!
Here's an article on the subject with a good discussion and a somewhat dodgy suggestion for non-Verizon service: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57555091-94/can-you-ditch-your-smartphone-data-plan-for-wi-fi/.
Here's a discussion on a T-Mobile forum laying out the options (as of last November): http://support.t-mobile.com/message/198200. It sounds like it would meet one of the OP's desires: "Can I use an Android phone that I buy from a retailer on my Verizon plan without adding data?" Not on Verizon, but probably on T-Mobile.

  • This isn't a question but rather a warning to anyone using the new OS for iphone 4.  The imessage uses up your data plan like crazy.  I called Apple about it and they said no it's not doing it.  I called AT

The new OS is burning through my data plan like crazy and here's why.  Imessage uses your data plan and not your texting plan.  So every time you send a text message to someone with an iphone it uses imessage and it uses your data, not your text plan.  I couldn't figure out why I was burning through so much of my data plan so quickly.  I called Apple and they said, no it's not the data plan doing it.  I called AT&T and they said, yes, the imessage uses data instead of your texting plan if you are texting to another iphone.  Also, the new OS runs your apps all the time, even when you aren't using them.  So if you are not near wifi your apps are running and burning your data plan.  The AT&T guy took me through the steps to turn off the apps.  You can still use them but they won't be running constantly.  Seriously Apple, you should let people know this.  It does say it in the fine print on the website "data rates may apply" under imessage but most people will never read this.  So my data plan started on October 10th and it's already at 175 megabytes and I only have a 200 megabyte plan.  I've never used more than 50 to 75 megabytes in a month.  Apple get it together and be honest with people and tell them.  Quit denying the problem.  Most people have probably not even discovered this yet.  Wait till you get your bill.

    kimmie92592 wrote:
It's not really common knowledge because I've talked to several people today and none of them knew about it.  Also, when I called Apple they said no the new OS is not using data.  Totally wrong answer.  You'd think they'd know about it and at least tell people.  The people who are going to be hit by this are people like me with the 200mb plans.  I just think it's best to spread the word so people can know what's happening.  I still don't know how I went through so much data in such a short period of time.  It's not happening anymore though, not since I fixed everything up last night.
If you are using a free wifi connection, there are no data charges with iMessage.  But in an area where you did NOT have a wifi connection, of course it used 3G and of course you got charged for it (or had it count against your plan limits).
I'll ask again - without a wifi connection, just what did you think was happening?  How did you think your iPhone was able to magically send a message WITHOUT using any data connection?  A little bit of rational thought would have made you realize that there was no way, over a 3G connection (which is a service provided by your cellular service provider, NOT Apple), that you can send or receive ANYTHING without your service provider's plan picking it up.
Nothing abut iMessage has ever hinted that it can, in any way, bypass your service provider when NOT using a wifi connection.

  • If you use imessage while on WiFi does it still use your data plan or does it only use the data plan if you're on 3G?

I just got the new iPhone4s (my first time off of a flip phone!) with the imessaging but I'm not sure if that is going to use up my data plan if I use it instead of texts.  If I'm at home on my wifi will that still take away from my data plan if I use imessage? I know that FaceTime works off of wifi as opposed to the data plan but wasn't sure if it was the same for imessage.  I'm on the Verizon data plan if that matters.
    Thanks!

This weekend, the AT&T tower near our home failed.  We had no AT&T cell service whatsoever.  During this time, our home WiFi was always running at 100%.  No iMessage would go through, nor could any iMessage be received.  Both my and my wife's iPhone 4S were connected to the home WiFi and were used with it.  Two things did not work: cell service and iMessage.
I think that iMessage seems to rely on the phone data plan, or at least the cell service must be in range to use it.

  • The new podcast app is using up my data plan

The new "podcast app" is using up my data plan like crazy! Its costing me much much more money now to listen to my podcast. They want donations to keep them "free" but this is much much futher from free. What is going on! I want it to go back to the way it was. Please dont tell me about them being free on WIFI I know that. I dont live in the city so the only WIFI is never where I can get it when I use them. Even driving down the road , if I loose service the podcast stops and my bill is over the top! What can I do to make it stop!!!!!??? This is a very bad move.
Also what is the yellow "other" on my itunes sync thing that show how much of what is using up the space on my phone? I have taken almost everything off of the phone and almost half of the space is the yellow other. I can not wipe my phone and start over I have legal text messages I have to keep for court on my phone.
Im very unhappy with this move of Apples and others are unhappy with it too or havent caught on to it yet.
Please change it or let us know what to do to end this issue.
    thank you
    ami
PS, I will be contacting the the podcasts to let them know that the donations will now be going to pay for the NO LONGER FREE PODCASTS.

This has been really frustrating me too!  I made sure the 'use data' was turned off in settings, and yet when I was listening to a podcast, it went from one that I had downloaded to one that I hadn't downloaded without stopping, so I used up a ton of data!  It was because I was 'subscribed' to that podcast, which meant every darn episode ever was appearing in my list of podcasts - you can set it to download them automatically, but I don't want to download every single podcast for some, and there's no way to easily pick and choose like there used to be (with the 'get more podcasts' button).  In the end, I've just unsubscribed from all my podcasts, and I'll go find them one by one - it's really annoying, but it seems like it's all (downloading every possible episode, which for some is a lot weekly) or downloading manually by going to the catalogue.  I miss the old podcasts.  Also, I don't think it's cooler that it's not merged with my other music anymore.  Why was that necessary?
