Text wrap around an achored object

I'm continually frustrated by a text wrap issue around an achored object in a story. I have two anchored textframes that are taking up the top half of a text frame, one of them has a full column text wrap applied to it which forces the first title of the regular text to begin beneath it.  My issue is that sometimes this title falls too close to the anchored text frames but if I add space to the bottom of the text wrap, the title does not snug to the text wrap but will stay tight until the wrap adjustment invades the cap height and then it will suddenly jump way down what looks like the full line height of the style, creating way too much of a gap. I can't seem to get a clean even space between my anchored textframe and the first line of text. I'm doing hundreds of files with this set up and they are looking different because the anchored text frames are all different sizes and I can't get that space between them and the first title to be uniform.  I'm sure I'm missing an option somewhere, but I can't figure out what it is. I want the first line of text to snug up to the edge of the text wrap, and it just won't do it. I've looked through all my style options and can't figure out what I'm missing.  "Align to grid" is set to "None," and "Start Paragraph" is set to "Anywhere."
I'm really confused by this. Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or if I've run up against a limitation in the application?
I'm using CS5 on a Mac 10.5.8

Sorry Grant,
Your "solution" does not work in this instance. The boxes you see in my image are the first things on that page. The anchor paragraphs are set to start in a new column so that they purposely start a new page. The story starts 3 pages before this and you can't have anchored objects more than a spread away from their anchors, so your solution simply does not work. I would have to break my lesson into multiple stories, which is the very thing I'm trying not to do to keep my workflow efficient.
It looks like it is a limitation of ID's anchored object workflow (which has never been ideal, but I'm trying to work with it). Unfortunately, tables are also not a safe solution because long tables used together with span/split column features cause ID to crash (predictably)--as far as I can tell, Adobe doesn't appear to be interested in fixing this bug. I've learned the hardway not to combine them in any workflow unless I want to restart ID multiple times a day.
In case you are wondering, this complicated workflow resulted from a shortcoming in ID anyway. I have to place the text in table cells so that I can use the SIde Heads plugin to pull them automatically into anchored objects. I have to anchor them into floating objects to get the rounded corners on background squares that is BEHIND the text. I could do it as tables in the flow of text if I could create anchored backgrounds with rounded corners that floated behind the tables, but unfortunately, ID will not let you change the stacking order of anchored objects--they always float in front and there is no option to push them behind--and tables are uniformly square and boring. I tried several times to create an easily automatable workflow for this project, and complicated as it is, this is the only one that actually works.
I will have to manually adjust the paragraph spacing and leading. That seems to be only adjustment that gives me the fine control that I want. I just wish it were consistent from document to document so I could set it in the style and not have to eyeball everything.

Indesign CS3: type on a path ignores text wrap around objects?
is this true? or do I have a setting that I'm missing?
    thanks.

Seems that it does, and in CS4 as well.
What are you doing with type on a path that requires it to honor wrap? Could you do it by cutting the path and threading?

  • Text wraps around image in one col not another?

    Beginner with INDCS2....
I have an image (I can't remember if it's jpg or gif) that I have set for text wrapping. The image spans one whole column and about 15% of the column to the right. What I'm seeing is the text in the right column wraps but the text in the left column doesn't.
Do I need to set something in the text frame?

do this image is InLine/AnchoredObject and is placed after paragraph in left column that doesn't wrap ?
is your text in table in left column ?
or maybe you have two TextFrames (instead of one TextFrame with two columns) on different layers, and image on third layer between, and you have set option in preferences to wrap texts only from lower layers ?

  • Is there any way to keep a photo/text box  where you placed it after it is checked as inline, I have text wrapping around many photos-Pages seem to move the photos to the middle of the page and that will not do for my project.

I have a book I want to sell as an EPUB when done...only one problem I got the message when doing so: " floating objects aren't supported in ePub format" So I found out by checking inline format that will work but it moves the text box and photo to where it want to go and not where I want it to be...this will not work so how do I make it stay where I place it and still save without the error of floating object issues.... In addition, when I let it go where it wants to go it lets me stay as an ePub and takes me to iTunes producer ( I have my books on iTunes made with iBooks Author) and is this right...I want to make it ready as an ePub not for Apple but for other eBook readers... Can anyoe help? Thanks

I copied text & paisted it and then draged the 3 photos from the file...then clicked on the photo then clicked the inline boxon tool bar nexed to floating one and that is how I did it
I do not know what you mean "cut & paist"  how do I get the photo in from my picter folder if I do not drag it to the page in Pages?
I went to my photo folder and copied a photo and paisted the photo on the top left part of the page and it went there but there was no text to the right of photo...I could crop the photo to what ever size but no text to the right of photo...
This is just too big of a mess of a program as it should be easier then this,,,I hav e 300 photos in this project and would have to re-paist them all...that is nuts...
I see the button to the right of inline and floating that has 6 [lace to have the photo but the text does not float around the photo...
If this is what your talking about this very little freedom in my page layout as I need it to let me place it where I need it to be and the wrap the text...
There has to be an easier way to get my books ready for other formats other that Apple's iPad...iBooks Author was way eisier to make ready for iTunes...Love that program!!!
Want my books for sale on all the other formats and was told by Apple Pages whould do it...
I must be be out to lunch or the designers at Apple are ???

  • How do you underline a drop cap so that subsequent text wraps around it?

I've found a PDF online where the designer has used large drop caps on a number of occasions that are underlined.
Obviously this isn't technically difficult, I can add an underline in the Character panel, but the underline appears over the top of the line of text below.
In the case of the original example, not only does the line of text below appear below the underline on the drop cap, the text adjacent to the right of the drop cap is perfectly lined up with the bottom of both the drop-capped letter and the underline, as if everything is set on the baseline. How is this achieved so acurately?

This is possible in Indesign byu using the paragraph styles.
You can setup a paragraph style to add a drop cap using a charachter style ( Image 1)
and then add the underline option in the charachter style used for the dropcap and change the ofset accordingly for the underline option ( image 2)

  • Text blur around objects

Problem: text wrapped around an inserted object blurs, especially if the object has a shade. Increasing the Extra Space around the object reduces the blur, but does not get rid of it. And trying to achieve a wrap tighter than the default 12 points makes the blur very noticeable. The blur, though less visible, appears when Reflection, the jolly new feature in Pages 2, is used to go over text underneath an object.
This problem is particularly troublesome when producing professional print PDFs.
To see what I am talking about open the first page of the Smith Family Newsletter template and have a look at the characters to the right of the house photo in the centre of the page.
Has anyone dealt with this successfully? Would be very obliged if you could point me to a solution.

    Hello sashura,
this happens when exporting to minor quality PDFs, because of the conversion of the shadow and reflection effects into images. Lower quality PDFs are stored with lower resolutions for bitmap images. If you need 1A PDF quality, use the ColorSync app for PDF saving. To do so, follow these steps:
    1) Open the print requester in Pages and choose the item "ColorSync" in the 3rd pop-up menu.
    2) There choose the last entry (for adding filter) of the pull-down menu "Quarz-Filter". Your document will be open in the ColorSync app.
    3) Click on the button with the three filters in the tool bar of the window and a new window opens.
    4) Create a new filter and name it for a PDF/X-3 filter.
    5) Over the menu triangle button at the right of the filter name bar you can add filter content. Choose the component for PDF submenu and there the PDF/X-3 item.
    6) Now you can see the filter attributes. In the row before the last one you can insert the resolution. This is important for shadows and fonts above and inside of shadowed shapes, too. With the attributes you have control over trim- and bleed boxes as well.
    7) When you are ready with your settings, close the filter window and choose the just created filter with the pop-up menu at the bottom of the ColorSync window. Than press the accept button and save the PDF document.
With this you have the best control for PDF print options.
I hope this solves your problem, because since I use this I have no display quality problems for printing.

  • Editor doesn't see text flowing around object

I've placed a psd file with a transparent background and next to it a text frame. The text flows around the non transparent parts of the object. When the editor opens the file, the image shows as kind of a preview version. Light coloured and with a non transparent background. But what's worse, the text isn't flowing around the object. Instead it flows around the object frame. See attached image. Left the view in Incopy, right in Indesign as it should be. What is causing this? When the editor edits the text and I open it again in Indesign, the text still flows around the man.

Both are CS3. I save the Indesign (with the correct text wrap around the alpha channel) and the assignment is opened in Incopy at a remote location (where ever the editors are). They see the image with the text wrapped around the image frame instead of the transparent part.  The can edit the file and when I open it in Indesign again, the text flows around the non transparent parts again. The Indesign file is a new document. Doesn't matter whether I open the ID or IC file, both open with the text wrapped around the object. Only when the editor opens the IC file the text is wrapped around the image rectangle.

  • Pasting images, editing, wrap around text in appleworks

When I try to insert images into a text document in Appleworks, it will add the image, but the only thing I can do is resize it. I can't place the image where I want it to go, and I can't make the text wrap around it either.
Also, is there a way to make flow charts, or add text to the shapes you can insert????
    Thanks!

    Hi Cristina,
Images can be inserted into AppleWorks WP documents in two different ways—as inline objects or as floating objects.
If AppleWorks is in Text mode when you insert or paste the graphic, it will become an inline object. These are treated as a single (large) character in the line of text, and their location is fixed relative to the text itself. Inline objects can be moved, within the line of text, by clicking on the object to select it, then dragging it to another position in the text.
If AppleWorks is in Draw mode when the graphic is inserted or pasted, it will be a floating object. These 'float' above the text layer, and can be moved independently of the text, which flows under the object. If Text Wrap (go Options > Text Wrap) is applied to the object, the text will flow around it.
You can change an inline object to a floating object using the following steps:
•Click on the red toolbox at the lower left of the window to Show the Tools.
•Click the object (graphic) to select it. A single handle will appear at the bottom right corner of the object.
•Press command-X to Cut the opbect from the document and place it on the clipboard.
•In the Tools, click the Selection Tool (Arrow) at the top of the Tools Palette.
•Press command-V to Paste the graphic back into the document as a floating object.
(•With the object still selected, go Options > Text Wrap... Choose Regular, and click OK.)
You'll now have a graphich which can be repositioned at will, and which text will flow around.

    Barry

  • Text will not wrap around a photo in indesign cs3?

we have tried EVERYTHING. we use adobe indesign for our school newspaper and for the past 3 days we have been trying to get one of the articles (text) to wrap around a photo.
the photo is a simple rectangle shape. for all of the other pages, the text wraps around photos perfectly fine. but for some reason on this one page it will not wrap around any picture at all.
of course "text wrap" is selected for the photo and we also tried going to the text frame options and unchecked ignore text wrap. that still didn't work.
we tried putting it on "detect edges" and that also did not work. ):
please please please if you have any suggestions, add them!!! we really need to fix this issue because this page needs these pictures!

I just encountered the same problem, the text did not wrap around the image whatever i did. I found the solution on my problem, that i had an imagebox underneath the image, which i was not aware of. I discovered it when i deleted first the textframes and the image. After i deleted the second imagebox the text wrapped around the image as i wanted it!

  • Text Wrap Contour Options Not Available in CS6

So I just started using CS6, and I know from CS5 that there used to be the "Dectect Edges" option when trying to do a text wrap around an object shape. Every time I try to text wrap like this in CS6, the "contour options" menu is "greyed out," and I can't adjust my text wrap. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have a screen shot below. It is happening in all of my CS6 documents, around PSDs and objects created in InDesign.

In your screen shot you have the text frame selected. That would disable the contour options. You want to select the object that you want the text to wrap around, not the frame that holds the text you want to wrap.

  • ID CS3: Text Wrap stopped working!

I suddenly have an odd problem: a text box that refuses to honor the text wrap setting on another box. The one that is supposed to force the wrap does have the wrap turned on. The box that is supposed to honor the wrap setting is not set to ignore the text wrap.
I've tried the common fixes like going into composition preferences and toggling on and off the "Text Wrap Only Affects Text Beneath" box, and trashing ID's preferences. In addition, I have run Onyx to repair permissions and run maintenance scripts, and in desperation also cleaned the font cache.
I'm really stumped here. The box that the text is supposed to wrap around is an object that I keep stored in a library (a column head for a regular contributor to a magazine), and it has performed flawlessly for months. Nothing is changed in that respect from the previous issue of the magazine. The two boxes are on different layers, but that has been no problem in the past.
I should add that the problem is not limited to that particular library item; it seems to also happen with other column heads from that same library.
Does anyone have any hints as to where I should go from here? I'm at a bit of a loss

Finally discovered the problem. Somehow my text box default had changed from text wrap off to text wrap on (I'm sure I wasn't paying attention at some point) and, with both text boxes set to wrap, they were somehow canceling each other out.
Once I shut off the text wrap on the article box, everything snapped back to normal.

  • Text-wrap problem ID CS3 on Intel Mac

I've recently been upgraded to an Intel Mac workstation running Leopard and for the most part, the transition has been smooth.  However, I just noticed today that I cannot get "detect edges" to work on a text wrap around an object with a transparent background in a placed Photoshop file.  The detect edges only works if I have a white background.  I've never had this problem before, so I wonder if it's a result of my new computer.  I use this function of text wrap constantly, and I'm hoping someone knows if this is a known bug and if there is a work around.

You don´t have to use detect edges feature for extracted PSD-image.... just select a proper Contour Options Type, Alpha Channel for instance.

  • InDesign CS6 Text Wrap increments not accurate.

My work jumped from CS4 to CS6 so I don't know if CS5 had the same issue. Anyway. Text wrap (around bounding box) seem to now be very limited. For example, If I have, say a .25 text wrap on the bottom of a object, but I need to change it slightly to .245 the text does not move. The box shows the change, but the text below just doesn't follow suit. CS4 I was able to make tiny incremental changes to the wrap, but it is not working for me now in CS6. Any ideas, answers?

  • Text wrap with EPS graphic files

I'm using ID CS3 v5 with Mac OS Leopard 10.5.6.
I am trying to use the TEXTWRAP panel with an EPS graphic that has been imported into the text.
When I select the graphic and go to the text wrap panel none of the options are available to me - if I hover the cursor over any of the 5 options it changes to a NO ENTRY sign.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I too am trying to get various InLine (graphic) objects…
-- to flow with text (got it!), AND
-- have surrounding text wrap around them as they move (no luck so far).
It seems like this should be easy, but I too have failed to be able to figure it out.
I do know that objects that are NOT inline can easily have text flow around them, but I'm sure hoping that InLine objects can too.
Can anyone tell me (us) if InDesign can do what I'm/we're asking, and if so, HOW?
I'm using ID CS4 on a G5 iMac running Tiger.
Thanks in advance for any replies!

  • CS4 Text Wrap issue - HELP!

HELP!  I taught myself PageMaker 6.5 and I got REALLY good at the basics, but not so great at the in-depth things.  Consequently, when I upgraded to InDesign CS4, the same holds true, so please feel free to treat me like a 2-year-old in your explanations.  Now for my dilemma:
I create a quarterly magazine.  Most of the pages are 2- or 3-column spreads.  Many times, a photograph (and its caption) will span more than just one column, but not necessarily the entire width of two.  In other words, my photo could span all of column 1 and 1/2 of column 2, with the text flowing to the right of the photograph, then expanding to fill all of column no. 2 beneath it.  In PageMaker, when I text-wrapped around the pic, leaving enough bottom text wrap to insert my captioning, the text would wrap perfectly, keeping the text in perfect alignment horizontally across the columns.  That, in turn, kept the bottom edge of all my columns exactly equal.
In InDesign, however, that's not the case. The text doesn't align equally horizontally across the columns, hence ruining my clean horizontal text margin at the bottom.  This happens any time I have a photo that spans all of one and part of one (or two, in the case of a centered photograph) column.  In fact, even if I place a photo that fits within just one column, the horizontal text alignment gets screwed up.  I'm attaching a .pdf of page 35 of the issue I'm working on to show you what I mean.
I've tried choosing all three columns and clicking the "align top edges," but that just drags all three columns up to the 1/2 inch margin at the top of the page, and my text actually starts 1/4" beneath that (3/4" from the top page edge) because of the page numbering, and when I drag all three columns back down to the 3/4" mark, the wrapping gets all screwed up again.  So I tried "align bottom edges," and that didn't work either (it worked to a point... anything that actually had text flowing to the bottom of the column was fine, the same thing occurred then above the column with a photo spanning all of it.  Geez, I'm confused just trying to explain it.  Hopefully, the attached .pdf will help make sense of this.
Consequently, I'm moving columns manually for this issue (all 60 pages of it), because it has to be at the printers by the end of the weekend and I'm just plain out of time.  If anyone can give me some guidance so I don't have to do this again next time, I'd really appreciate it.
You can email me at [email protected] if you have any ideas. Thanks for your help.
    Barb

Thanks so much to both Peter and Bob.  I'm sure this will fix the problem.  At least I know it wasn't something I was doing wrong and it really is a glitch in the program.  I'll play with the baseline grid, since it seems that will be the best option. I have a few months to experiment with it before the next issue goes to press.
Does setting a preference act like a default?  In other words, will it then apply to all pages in all new documents I create or is it specific to the document in which I'm working when I set it? If the latter, I'm guessing I can just include it when I set up my master page so it will apply throughout the issue?  Which, of course brings me to yet another question: how do I save my Master Pages so I don't have to redo them with each issue?
I'm finding that the majority of InDesign is a lot more user-friendly and easier to navigate than the old PageMaker -- many fewer steps for the same end result.  I hope to take a class if I can find one in my area, because I'm certain I'm doing many things the "hard way."  Learning as you go is okay, but you miss a lot of the finer points along the way and spend entirely too much time trying to figure things out or bugging people like you in this forum.
I apologize if some of what I ask seems rather elementary.
And Scott, sorry, but I've always felt that, out of all the fonts available, Comic Sans is the most readable.
