Text wrap on Master Page items

RE:  InDesign CS2 on Windows Vista
Hello,
I inserted a graphic on both of my master pages and applied a text wrap to them.  However, on my document pages, my text does not wrap around the graphics.  (In the Text Frame Options dialog box, the "Ignore Text Wrap" box is not checked.)  I know I can either override my master page items (and insert the graphic again) or control-shift-click on the graphic and force the text to wrap around it.  But that puts another link to the graphic in my document...and I'm trying to minimize the file size.
Do you have any ideas on how to make the text wrap on the master pages work on the document pages?

Text wrap on masters is not honored on live pages in CS2. It was added as feature in CS3.

  • Changing font/-size of a text field on master-pages not possible? (field prop)

    Hi,
I would like to change the font and font-size of a textfield on a master page.
I wonder if I do anything wrong, because the font-options (size, font etc.) are simple greyed out / not avaliable, when I click on my text field.
It seems, there is any way to customize the font-properties of a textfield (only) on master-page.
Well I guess it would work with java script in init-event ...  but really, why the hell it should not be possible simply to use the properties/text properties?!
Please correct me if I am wrong. Do I do anything wrong or is it really not possible to customize font of a text field on master pages?

    Hi,
I was just about to post, that I figured it out.
Actually, I use Livecycle Designer in SAP (transaction SFP). There seems to be a bug (one of hundrets by the way).
If I click on a field, that does not have text-property e.g. subform, text-option menu greys out.
Afterwards it stay this way until I click/doubleclick into a simple text (not text field). From that moment on, text/font-option menu is available again, until I click on something without text. => So pay attention and click wisely
    coming soon: "SAP meets Livecycle Designer - a (Bug)Lovestory", hardcover 124 Pages. ; )
by the way: SAP does not sopport interactive forms higher than Reader 8.1. Its statement "8.1 is fine enough for everything you need in a SAP/Adobe Interactive Form". So beware of using XFA higher than in 8.1. sad, but true ...

  • Include Master Page Items in Table of Contents

I am building a table of contents in InDesign CS3. I've got paragraph style applied to my section heading and well as section subheadings. However, my sections headings are located on Master Pages (as they are repeating on several pages), and my section subheadings are located directly on the pages themselves (as they do not repeat).
When I set up my table of contents only my section subheadings show up, not both. When I go to a page with a section heading and override the master page item and then update my table of contents my section header shows up. Is there any way to include my secion headers without overriding the master page items?

I found this article about using Power Headers to override master frames that addresses the table of contents issue: http://in-tools.com/article/power-headers/power-headers-overrides-master-frames/

  • Help w. Text Frames in Master Page

    Hi
I need to make a simple task, yet it seems impossible.
I am making a large number of documents of the same type and stlye. Lets say, something like a diploma or a certificate. They all have the same design, and the only thing that is different in them is the text in the 2 text boxes each one of them has. Lets say if we follow the certificate example that on each card I must put in the same two text boxes - "the name of the person" and "the date". So I must set a nice master page with 2 text boxes that I can fill in for each card. Since the design may change, I need to be able to move the positions of the boxes from the master page after I have filled them. I must also be able to change the case, font and other text properties of each box. For example, I when I would have done 1000 certificates and filled in respectively 1000 names and dates of receiving and then I would decide that I must place the box with the name on a different position on the page and also change the text properties, say from Times New Roman to Georgia. And to do it from the master page or any other effective way without changing each certificate.
So far, I managed to place the boxes on the master page, and I saw that I can overwrite the text in each certificate and still be able to move the position of all boxes from the master page. But I cannot find a way to change the text properties of all boxes.
    Thank you for your help!

With a long list of data items, you could consider using data merge. You'd need a template document; on its page create a placeholder text frame for each data item, like name and date, if they'll need individual positioning. Put a data placeholder in each frame. (It's also possible to insert multiple merge placeholders in a single frame.) You'd also need paragraph styles. If you have material that is the same on every page, put that on a master page in the merge template.
Search Google for terms like "InDesign data merge tutorial," and similar phrases, without quotes, for details.

  • Help with text link on master pages CS2

I'm having trouble doing the following.
I want to create a template document, which will eventually be for the chapters in a book. I want a small text box on my lead spread to be linked for text flow, to the larger text boxes on all of the other pages.
Easy enough to create masters that look right, and links between text frames on the same master spread, but I don't understand how the different master spreads can have text links between them.
I want to enter each chapters text, in the first text frame (on the chapter lead spread) and have this auto flow through and auto create the remaining text pages needed.
    Thank You

The only way to get text to flow from a page based on one master to a page based on another is if the second master is based on the first, and the pages are already in place in the file.
Most people use some variation of this technique: make a chapter opener master and a regular master, then make two pages, to start a chapter. Apply the opener master to the first, and the other master to the second. Place the text on the first page (don't overrride the frame first, if you've got a master frame) and don't autoflow -- you want the rest of the story to be overset. Pick up the overset and move to the second page, hold the shift key and autoflow (again, do not override any master frame first).
You don't actually need master frames for most book type work. ID makes frames on the fly based on the page margins and column guides, so if you set the margins where you want the bounds of the frame you don't need the master frame.
The first frame in a thread will start with it's top at the y-coordiante where you click the mouse and extend to the bottom margin. It will fill the column width. Subsequent frames on autoflow will fill from the top margin to the bottom. If the only difference between the chapter opener and the other pages is a dropped frame you wouldn't even need a separate master. Just put a horizontal guide on the master for reference where you want the top of that first frame and make sure you click on it on the opening page, holding shift to autoflow.

  • Placement of datamerge boxes and moving master page items

You helped me with my data merge problem earlier. Now I have successfully brought my excel info into Indesign with datamerge but I can't seem to get the multiple boxes to sit on my page, they are grouped together to the left and down from my page.
Also I've used master pages to create a header and footer for each page and the left hand page behaves as it should, but the objects on the rh master page appear lower and to the right of where they should be. I've attached a screenshot so you can see what I mean. It's a bit hard to see the rh page header, but it should be similar to the lh page. I'm using CS6.

After a bunch of trials and errors I think I've done the multiple records correctly. Just had an A4 page with nothing on it except the one text box and with no master pages - I changed to facing pages and did the master pages after I'd done the data merge.
It seems odd to me that the header and footer on the lh page is correct but not on the rh page when they've been made the same way.
I've just gone through my whole document and moved all the text boxes to where they should be and if I don't come up with some remedy that's what I'll do with the rh page but I'd really like to solve this mystery as I'm so pleased with the whole data merge system that I'd like it to work 100% properly.
The overset text is not a problem as I'm going to link my text boxes to deal with text of different lengths and some fields to be deleted. I've done the data merge several times while I worked out the right size for the text box to fit my desired page format.

  • Text Flow from master pages -- please help!

I'm so frustrated. For years I used Quark without a hitch. Haven't done DTP in years (but use DreamWeaver (after GoLive died ) and Illustrator) but need to typeset my book in InDesign and cannot get the most basic things down. Please have pity!
I created a master page (facing pages) where each side has a rectangle frame tool. When I went to a document page I could not put any text in that frame, but finally found out that you hold down command-shift and click in the frame to "unlock" it or make it accessible when outside of the master page edit area. (Sheesh -- is that remotely intuitive???)
Now that I'm able to get the test in the frame on a real page, I can't get it to FLOW from one page to another.
Basically, I have an entire book and I just need to dump all the text into the template I've created. And I need ID to add as many pages as necessary (from the master page) for all the text to show up. This seems like it should be easy but I'm at a loss.
    Any help?
After I get that to work, I need to be able to have the first page of each chapter use a different master page, because the look has to be slightly different. So any tips on that would be welcome as well.
Thanks in advance. Your help is appreciated!

While I agree that use of master text frames is usaully not desirable, you CAN do so if you wish, but if you expect to auto flow into them you MUST NOT override them onto the document page.
Instead, issue the Place command and select your text file, then hover the loaded cursor over the master frame area, being careful to avoid any margin, column or ruler guides, and hold the Shift Key and click. When you move over an empty frame you'll see the loaded cursor change so the symbolic text is enclosed in parentheses rather than having the right angle in the upper left corner. That's your clue that the eixiting frame will be used, and holding shift will caasue ID to make additional pages untill all the text is in place.

  • Indesign question: Master page items I remove won't stay gone

I'm working on laying out a book, with various chapters which are separate files. Naturally there's a master page with various guides I use a lot, as well as a fairly standard running header with page numbers and chapter and section names. As is standard practise, I want these to appear on nearly every page, but not on the first pages of chapters. (There are other times I might want to override this, but that's the main one.) So, I Ctrl-Shift-click and delete them when I set up a new chapter.
Problem is, they don't stay gone. Every so often, I open up a previous chapter and find that these elements are back on the first page of that chapter, and I delete them again. I've only been noticing this since I made the chapters in question into a book file so I could keep an eye on my page count and synch up styles more easily.
My best guess is that maybe it has something to do with the aforementioned synching. I do want those chapters to share the same master page(s) but do not want IDto keep reapplying elements from them to individual pages that I've already manually removed them from (sometimes more than once). How can I prevent this from happening? (Or alternatively, if this isn't the cause of the problem, what else could it be and how do I deal with that?)

Fair enough. Guess that's just as easy, if not slightly easier, than what I've been doing, and so far it seems to be working.

  • Editable text box on each page, but generated from Master Page?

I want to create a blank text box that lives on the Master Page so that it shows up on each page in the document, but I then would enter custom text into the field on each page ( or just leave it blank).
I know, I know, I can do simply copy a text box from one page, and paste in place on all subsequent pages... or set it up once on a page, then just keep duplicating that page... or some other work around. But simple as those work arounds are, I'd just like a blank text box show up automatically on each page as a master page item, then I can enter text as a see fit and not have to do any duplicating tricks. I've looked up a few tutorials, but none solve for my need.
So I guess the real question is, does InDesign allow the content of a master page text field to be individually edited on the pages of the document itself?

It's bet to NEVER use the override master page items command since it overrides ALL master items. That's like using a wrecking ball as a flyswatter. And you don't need to put random text in the frame either (especially since you said you don't want to use it on some pages, though it might be best for those if you create another master without the frame). To override any master object hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) + Shift and click on it with the selection tool.

  • Change the font typeface of text object in form Master Page

    Dear all,
I am creating a Adobe Livecycle form with multi-language support. Simply, there is a header title that is a text object in master page. I want that it can be converted to simplified Chinese from English and change its font typeface to “SimSun” when printing begins. I try the following code on its “Initize” event to do this.
Simply, I configure a print flag(Y/N) in form so that it will convert into simplified Chinese and change the font typeface to ‘SimSun’ when the flag is reset to ‘Y’.
    Int langInt = i ;
    If (pFlag  == “Y”) {
               PaymentRequisitionApp.pageSet.Page1.MasterSubform. Text1.value.text.value = l_XML.Record[i].TITLE.toString();
               PaymentRequisitionApp.pageSet.Page1.MasterSubform. Text1.font.typeface ="simsun";
I found that it doesn’t work. There is something else in the form to reset the title to English. So I try to paste the code above in “calculate” event of tex1 object. It’s work!
    Question:
    1.      Anyone can tell me that the implement order of the events in the form?
    2.      Does it exist other better way to do this?
            3.  Which event, function or any else let the master page’s object to be reset?

  • Can't select text boxes with Type Tool to write in on pages, only on Master Page

I'm unable to use the Type Tool to select the tax boxes on a document page in Indesign CC. I can select it on the Master Page. I can write on the Master Page. If I apply the Master Page afterwards, the written text from the Master Page appear on the document page, just as it should. But whenever I try to select a column on a document page, all the Type Tool does is draw a new text box (which I can select and write in). What's up with that? I applied the Master multiple times. If I can write on a the Master Page, why not on the document page?

Individual master frames can be overridden on a document page by holding down Cmd + Shift (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift (Windows) and clicking on them with the Selection tool.
Empty master text frames are generally more useful for placing external text files and having them flow from page to page than for typing, and they need not be overridden to do that -- just move the loaded cursor inside the frame.

  • Text wrap in anchored objects

In order to place text boxes relative to the spine, I have placed them as anchored objects.
But now, these text frames do not respect text wrap setting from objects outside of the anchored object.
I have made sure that ignore text wrap in text frame options is not checked.
    Is this a bug?
And does anyone know a workaround?

In order to make my design indifferent to later added pages, I have placed all text frames and graphic placeholders as anchored objects, positioning them relative to spine.
When I now place an object on top of such an anchored text frame, text wrap is not working, even if i overide the master page item.
The only work around I have found is to copy the respective text frame and make the original master page item unvisible.
Is there not another way to to this?
For me, the best would be another way of placing text and graphic frames relative to spine.
Bus as soon as one overrides the master page item, the object is not placed anymore relative to spine if another page is inserted.

  • Text wrap issue

I had graphic elements on a page that I had text wrapped around correctly. I dedcided I was going to use those elements for all pages, so I moved them to the masters. When I did that, the text wrap went away. It still shows up on the master pages, but its not applying to any of the document pages.
I can fix this manually, but I have to believe as good a program as ID is, that this little issue can't have been overlooked.
Anyone out there have a solution?
    Thanks

That was one of the short-comings of earlier versions of ID -- Text wrap on a master item only worked on the other master page items, not on a live page.
Short of scripting, about the best option I can think of is to select it on the master page and cut it it to the clipboard, then "paste in place" on each live page, which is a real pain in the neck.
I'd definitely ask in the scripting forum if anyone has a script for CS2 already written.

  • Can the text wrap tool options be reinstated?

I may have inadvertenly hit some keyboard code to remove the options, though I certainly don't remember doing so. There are no options displayed at all, only a box that can be checked or unchecked to use the text wrap on the master pages only. I have tried it both ways, and checked the master pages for possible boxes, but there is nothing. Has anyone else ever encountered this? I appreciate your help! Thanks so much -

What version of ID are you using? What OS?
Your description is a littel vague but it sounds like you've opened the Text Wrap panel flyout menu and all you see is the option to limit wrap on a master page object to other text on the master page. Is the panel itself blank?
If that's the case, see Replace Your Preferences

  • Everytime I copy pages from one ID CS3 doc to another, it re-applies the master page objects!!

    Please Help,
This is a topic I would really like to get to the bottom of.
We have InDesign CS3 templates for creating our reports.
These templates contain around 10 different master pages with grey placeholder image boxes and text boxes with dummy text.
When we copy pages from one ID document to another, all the master page objects that were originally assigned to the pages are re-applied!!
Resulting in lots of grey dummy boxes and text boxes re-appearing on top of the page items!!
It's so annoying because we always customise the pages once we've pulled down master pages to work on, so when we copy pages across to other documents we have to apply the blank master to be able to kick out all the master objects easily.  Then we need to add the page numbers and footers back onto the blank master page.
My question is, is there a way to switch this off, so when I move or copy pages from one document to another, nothing happens relating to master page objects, the pages simply just copy across as they are?
Please help!  If not I may have to ask an external developer to write a script to fix this, it drives 900 of us crazy!
thanks in advance for any help.
Or am I just being ridiculous and not actually realising you can switch this off, doh!
    G

Just a bit of further clarification on this issue (very few people really understand what's going on with master pages and overridden master page items):
When you override a master page item, the object is moved to a local page, but a connection is maintained with the original master page item. This a) allows for the override to be removed (and return the object to its original state). This also, b) allows for changes made to the original master page item (other than the changes made to the local item from the point that it was overridden) to effect the local item as well.
When the connection to the master page item cannot be maintained, the local item gets disconnected totally from the master page, and becomes a regular, run-of-the-mill page item.
In light of this, there's three ways you can end up with duplicate master items:
Reapplying a master page (or applying a new one). When you reapply a master, all overridden master page items get detached from the master, and the original mster page item appears again in its original state. Most of the time this produces unwanted duplication of objects. To fix up your page, you have two options: a) Delete the master page item, and b) copying the contents of the original to the new master page item. The disadvantage of "a" is that you end up with an item which is totally detached from the master, and changing the item on the master will have no effect on the local item. The disadavantage of "b" is that it's a lot of work...
Moving a page to a different document. When you move a page to a different document which has the same master as the one originally applied, the master in the new doc is applied, and the effects are identical to reapplying a master page (i.e. overridden objects are detached). If the applied master (i.e. a master with the same name) does not exist in the new doc, the master is transferred over to the new doc along with the page, and the connections to the master page are preserved (well, re-created actually...). The workarounds in case #1 apply here as well.
When page sides change in a document, the objects on the facing page appears.
What happens here is a bit confusing, but here's an approximate explanation:
When you apply a master to a page or spread in InDesign, what you are actually doing is applying an entire spread to an individual page. You can thing of a master spread as an overlay (or more precisely: underlay) on the page with a window cut out to the exact page dimensions.
When the page side changes that "window cut-out" shifts to show the master spread items which correspond to the position within the spread of your current page (i.e. recto or verso). All objects which exist outside the window shift out of view (but still exist!).
When an object is overridden, the position of the object is defined by its location on the local page, NOT its position on the master spread. When the page then changes sides, the object remains where it was on the page (even though the object it's connected to on the master spread moves out of the window of view). A corresponding object on the facing page of the master (if it exists) will then show in addition to the overridden one.
Now remember: contrary to the first two cases, both objects are based on master ones: one visible one and one invisible one.
Dealing with this third case requires much more care than the first two.
The obvious way to deal with this would be similar to the first two, but if you remove the local object and transfer the content to the new maste object, the invisible master object on the non-visible page was actually removed, so when the page sides change again, the object will now be connected to the now-invisible master page item, and the correct master page item will be gone!
The "correct" way to deal with this would be to transfer the content to the new master page item and remove overrides (not delete!) on the local item (which will make it disappear, because it moves back to the invisible page). Of course, when page sides change again, it becomes necessary to repeat the entire process.
If the local object gets deleted, then your master spread is missing objects with no visible indicator of the fact. This can lead to confusion when the document might be edited at some later point in time.
I believe that this complicated and un-intuitive behavior of master pages is part of the reason people tend to avoid using master page items. Documents tend to get messed up in really odd ways... It's a real shame, because extensive use of master page items has a lot of potential for streamlining workflows and saving an awful lot of time. This behavior really puts a damper on really using master pages as templates.
Getting master page items to work the way they "should" was a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with AutoFlow Pro... When the master page items are defined as such (i.e. given a unique name), AutoFlow Pro solves all three of the above issues by keeping overridden master page items connected to the master page items on the currently applied master (and when a new master is applied as well!).
(When I have a bit of spare time, I think I'll write this up on my blog with some visuals to make this easier to grasp...)
