What OS are you on?
Are you certain it is not compatible with this OS?
Is there an error message presented?
What type of file are you trying to open?
TextEdit is a built in app, shipped with the OS, it can't be downloaded from the store, have you copied TextEdit from a backup or is it trying to run from a backup disk or other copy of the OS - Spotlight can sometimes find & try to run other versions. Eject any backup disks & retry.
Try opening directly from /Applications (the Finders 'Go menu > Applications' will take you there).
If you need to restore the App you will need to have it in a backup or use the OS installer.

You need to buy an upgrade if one is compatible with your Mac model.
PowerPC G3 Macs can only go to 10.4.11.
PowerPC G4 and G5 Macs can only go to 10.5.8.
Macs with a Core Solo or Core Duo CPU can only go to 10.6.8.
Core 2 Duo and better Macs can go to 10.7.5 or 10.8.3 depending on their model. Upgrading to either requires going through 10.6.

When I click on Filed(in upper left hand corner of screen) a drop down box appears which includes several choices including Open File. When I click on Open File it shows many old downloads which I don't want or need to save. I can delete them individually but there are many many of them. Can someone give me guidance on how to deleter them all at one time. Thanks my friends.
hello cardavfl, i think in the open file dialog in the windows file picker you only can select one item at a time.
it would be better to look at the top of the file dialog ("look in:") where this folder is located on your harddrive & then use windows explorer & go to this path - then you can press ctrl+a to select all items at once (or use the mouse to select them all) and to delete them ... -
Why can't I open and retrieve my files from iPhoto and my Address Book after importing the files from my Power Mac G5 to my new Mac Pro? I get a warning that says the new OS on my Pro doesn't open files from a Power Mac. Any idea how I can fix this?
For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys. Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it. It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process. Preview: double-click doesn't open files AFTER they have been modified
Since a few weeks (maybe since I upgraded to OS 10.6.6 ?) Preview doesn't open files any more by double-clicking AFTER I have modified and saved them. They open when I drag them to the dock icon of Preview.
For instance, photos downloaded from a camera open by double-clicking them. However, if I rotate or crop them and then save, Preview doesn't open them any more but shows two subsequent error messages: (1) "The application can't be found", (2) "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)".
I found one workaround: when you close and reopen the folder in which these files are, they open again by double-clicking.
Quicklook works fine.
Looks like a bug in OS 10.6.6. Any other fixes?In the Finder, select one of the image files you want to open with Preview. Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu or the File menu. In the "Open with" section, choose Preview from the pulldown menu if it's not already selected. If it is selected, choose another application (any other), then re-select Preview. Click the "Change All" button and close the dialog.

I have been unsuccessful merging serval pdf files into one file. I select the Sidebar for both pdfs, then drag one pdf on top of the other and Save the Version. When I open the file I think I have saved, it shows only the original pdf. Advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am in the middle of a job using CS 6, but at the same time opening the Creative Suite apps. I created an InDesign file in CS 6, saved it, and now I can't open it. I'm getting this message: Cannot open file because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.1). You must use that version or later to open the file." AARRGGHH! So how do I access the file?
Sounds like you opened and saved it in CC, so now you need to go back to CC and either complete the project there, or export to IDML to take it back into CS6.

My Ipod touch plays music but every time I open an app that I have downloaded it closes immediately. This started happening after updating to the latest version of Ipod software.
Here's a couple things to try:
1. Reset the iPod by holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
2. Uninstall and reinstall one of your purchased apps. Sometimes this can rectify the issue.
3. Connect the iPod to iTunes and restore it. New system software usually resolves the issue. Make sure you sync before restoring because a restore removes the data from your iPod.

It's possible you email contained a virus, but unlikely. There haven't been any reports of email viruses effecting the mac.
My understanding is the Apple provides security updates for all malware including viruses.

InDesign tries, but doesn't open files on server.
When using a finder window to open CS3 and CS4 InDesign files from our server, I get the opening effect but not the open file. I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac. Double-clicking will not work, dragging the file into the application icon will not work, only the File > Open menu does the trick and opens the file. Note: double-clicking and dragging into the app icon does work for local files. Any fixes for the server file issue? Thanks!
i have this problem too at random, i click on the indesign cs4 file in the snow leopard finder, indesign actually makes that temporary whatever it is in the finder but the layout pages don't open. my workaround is to quit indesign and start again and this usually works. but i am wondering if there is any other solution? when the file doesn't open it doesn't help to try to open it through the file menu. so i just quit and start again. (this may be a feature of indesign since sometimes at random the font sizing buttons don't work.)

I use to remember things by creating events in iCal with a music file added, but now I can´t, I have updated my iMac to Mavericks and iCal only remembers me an event but doesn't open the songs (with iTunes). (Some times I use events with music files to wake me up jejeje). How can I solve it? Thanks.
I'd like to comment too here. I used to wake up all the time to music played in iCal, and before 10.8, I also used Applescript iCal events (all of this on my late 2011 Macbook Pro) in place of automator workflows. Since updating, my alarms simply haven't gone off, iCal not opening iTunes the way it should. I would be eager to find a solution.

TextEdit no longer opens files it used to open just fine.
Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, TextEdit has been giving me an error message when I try to open various text files: "The document “CRD-FONT.TXT” could not be opened. Text encoding Unicode (UTF-8) isn’t applicable."
I wish I knew how to set TextEdit to open the file anyway. I am sure it can be done; it used to open these files just fine. The files didn't change.
I had to download and install another company's editor just so I could open files that I used to work with in TextEdit. It's good to have the other editor, but it'd be great if TextEdit went back to being able to open these files without complaint.
Is there a setting in prefs that would resolve this? I may have changed a setting without realizing it would cause this.Sounds like there's something wrong with the file, though what that might be I'm not sure. I don't know enough about encodings to know, but sounds like there's probably a mismatch between the file's encoding and what the file claims its encoding is.
Try opening it with [TextWrangler|http://www.barebones.com/products/TextWrangler>, then choose Edit -> Document Options and see what the encoding is reported to be there. -

Dreamweaver CS6 doesn't open files
Hi Forum,
I have installed DW CS6 from the cloud on my Mac. I have exported the sites from DW CS3, and then imported them in CS6.
After first time installation, none of my files would open after double-clicking on them ( I allways got the 'design-notes', even if I have switched it off in the site preferences). I could only open them by using right-click -> Open with Dreamweaver
After deleting DW6 and re-install, opening works with one site, but when switching to another site, the same anoying issue happens...
Design notes pop-up and the document doesn't open, only when using right-click -> Open with Dreamweaver.
Looks there is some kind off cache somewhere which is corrupted, but thats only a wild guess.
Please help, because for the time being I am switching back using DW CS3.

its Mac OS X 10.8.2, and all associations are ok. ( Double clicking on a file in the Finder works ok ).
In the meantime I have found the problem;
After deleting the folders of the sites in Users/<name>/Library/Application Support/Dreamweaver CS6/en_US/Configuration/SiteCache, and restarting Dreamweaver, all works ok.
