TextEdit Help!

Hi, so I was wondering, how do you highlight text in TextEdit without changing the color of the actual writing, but highlighting that part of the text (like how it would look if you highlighted something on a paper.) I would like to do this in different colors. I really need to know this, or what I can get to do this, and I need very specific information/directions PLEASE! I need this ASAP or I will be in some trouble.
~Thanks in advance

I would like to do exactly what you mentioned above about changing the backround of only that text. I am not sure about what kind of MacBook you have though, because my TextEdit seems to be different from yours. It doesnt have anything like that button at the top that can allow me to highlight. Is there a setting to get this? I have the Version 10.6.8 MacBook. Also, I didnt want to make this a big deal, so I was just going to download Microsoft Word. But when I search for Microsoft Word in the App Store on my MacBook, it doesnt seem to find it. I am having a lot of trouble!
^^^ That is what my 'toolbar' looks like. ***** huh?
Please help!

  • How to delete columns in TextEdit?

Well, for a "power" user, veteran word processor, table star, help reader, Google user, and board browser, I've been unable to figure this out!
I also couldn't figure out where to post this (no TextEdit forum!).
So, what happened was that I copied and pasted several rows and coiumns from a spreadsheet and want to delete couple of the columns. I figured out that one can highlight columns using the option key, but then delete removes the text not the column!
It's probably something obvious, but I haven't found it!

    Hi
Does this help, quoting TextEdit Help:
Adding a table to your document
You can create tables in TextEdit documents to organize information.
Place the cursor where you want to add the table.
Choose Format > Text > Table.
In the Table window, type the number of rows and columns you want (or use the arrow buttons to add or subtract rows and columns).
To adjust the height or width of a row or column, place the pointer over the border of a cell. When the pointer changes to a double arrow, drag the border to change the dimensions of the row or column.

  • Editing in TextEdit

In the Edit > Insert menu, inserting a Line Break and a Paragraph Break both work, but they seem to do the same thing — insert a line break. Insert Page Break does nothing at all; it seems inop, no matter how I try to use it.
Is there something I'm missing, or is this a known 'feature' of this version?

    Hi, Michael!
Actually — even in word processing terms — what they do is different.
Before explaining, please allow me to quote from TextEdit Help, in case this is part of the issue:
"Formatting your document...  Only Rich Text Format (RTF) documents and Word Format files can be formatted. To convert your document to an RTF file, choose Format > Make Rich Text. To save a document as a Word Format file, choose File > Save As and choose Word Format from the File Format pop-up menu."
Now to illustrate, open save a TextEdit document as RTF. To illustrate the difference, copy your initial post's 1st paragraph into the document two times, separated by a few lines. Place the cursor at the end of the 1st line of the 1st copy and Edit »» Insert »» Line Break Then do the same for the 2nd example, except inserting a Paragraph Break this time.
    They still look ~the same?
Now select both and make a change to Spacing »» >16.0  6.0/6.0, e.g.
Voilá! This should help to clarify that the line break is actually distinct from the paragraph break. Paragraph spacing like in the example I used is pretty common among typists with whom I've worked (using different WP programs).
    Hth . . .
    Warm regards,

  • TextEdit Table Alignment Align on baseline

Can anyone explain the "Align on baseline" choice in the Table palette? I understand what a baseline is, but can't get text in a table to look any different between "Align top" and "Align on baseline", even after playing with fonts of different size in the same cell, fonts of different size in adjacent cells, changing the baseline, or adding subscripts/superscripts.
Next question: Why isn't "Align on baseline" explained in TextEdit Help?

My understanding is that since the table tag is just a container in the EDD and the tgroup is the actual table, that setting the format on the tgroup should be fine.  In fact there is an example in the either the dev ref or dev guide that shows this same mappping.
    Answering your questions:
Can one have multiple tgroups within a table element with each tgroup having a different table format? YES - but it rarely happens in practice.
Does the table format apply to the table element or the tgroup element? As described above I think it applies to the tgroup.
Do you need to set the table formatting via the tgroup align attribute? YES - it is standard CALS table format.
Or is it independent of the order? Order does not matter - I have tried various orders.  I can tell that the else clause is working because I can change the table format by changing the mapping in the ELSE clause.
If you cannot ultimately set the table format via an attribute in the tgroup, you could create a simple XSLT that could set the ttabstyle attribute in the table element based upon the align attribute in the tgroup. Then your EDD would set the table formatting via the ttabstyle attribute. This is a good idea.  I may not be able to use it since I need to change the DTD to support it and the DTD affects the online XML viewing application as well - but I may convince them to add the attribute if it works.  Thanks - I'll try this.

  • Is there any hope for Help Viewer?

I have read through as many discussions about Help Viewer problems as I can find, and still, help in Finder doesn't work. I have tried all of Dr. Smoke's suggestions and many others to no avail. Help Viewer still ends up going back to a blank screen, links that don't work, and the search just keeps searching.
All of the suggestions I have tried fix Help Viewer temporarily, but it has always gone back to its same old broken self.
If anyone out there can REALLY help, I would REALLY appreciate it.
    Thank you!

Hi Jordan. Hopefully I can offer a solution for this which bugged me enough to really try to resolve it, and have now done so, at least for me.
    First the essentials.
System Setup: Powermac G4 Dual 1GHz MDD. 1GB. MacOS 10.4.3
Issue: Loading Mac Helper from the Finder will result in a blank screen after the first launch. On first launch you will be able to click one or two links then it will not work and search will not function [issues may vary but blank screen always]
This problem occurred with earlier versions of Tiger. I have since done a clean install. Tried replacing the Help Viewer app from the Install disk and also the MacHelp.help document too, but it did not help. I even tried the same items from other disks just to check for corrupt files but still no change. Trashing the prefs does not seem to make any difference, nor the same with the cache folder but it can resolve other issues, just not this particular one.
NOTE Before others try this fix I strongly suggest you try the solutions suggested by Apple and those on the very good XLab web site. Here are a few related articles:
XLab. The most comprehensive guide to the Help issues.Check out the 'Help Viewer displays a blank window.' link.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html
Apple. From the source. Not quite the same symptoms but offers Help advice on
'Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: Mac Help Viewer unexpectedly quits'
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107013
    Solution:
    1. Go to User > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui [note: you need to launch Help Viewer at least once so that this folder is created]
    2. Delete ALL files/ folders in the com.apple.helpui folder, if any.
    3. Create a new folder inside com.apple.helpui and name it 'Mac Help' [the same as that created automatically by Help Viewer, case sensitive].
    4. Select the new folder and use Command + I to see the folder 'Info'. First
label it red [to aid further diagnostics] and then change ALL the permissions at the bottom to *Read only* [click Details to see the options, not just 'You can'. Include Read only for 'Owner', 'Group' & 'Others'. You will need Admin access for this]. Close the Info panel.
    5. Launch Mac Help from the Finder menu bar. If it was blank before, the Help Viewer screen should show the Mac Help homepage again. Try several links and search and Index. They should all work, and quicker now. Quit and relaunch. This time the Help Viewer works now and no blank screen. The issue with Mac Help is fixed ( but be aware that any other Help folders created could well cause the same issue, so check for these if it still happens and read on for details of how to deal with this other part of the issue)
    *BUT*
Although this resolves the Mac Help issue, AS SOON AS OTHER MAC APPLICATION HELP's ARE LAUNCHED, IT IS MOST LIKELY THE ISSUE WILL RETURN!, hence the labeling of the Help folders red, to track newly created Help folders (i.e. Mail Help, Safari Help etc). If these are launched this automatically creates help folders in com.apple.helpui for them and they also cause the blank screen problem.
So, the best thing is to create Help folders in the same way that you did for Mac Help, for ALL Mac applications to avoid having to do it incrementally as and when you use another Mac application Help [or if you do a search it may well create folders anyhow]. These are the Help folders I have created, with the red label and 'Read only' permissions:
    Activity Monitor Help
    Address Book Help
    AirPort Help
    AppleScript Help
    Automator Help
    Bluetooth Help
    Calculator Help
    Chess Help
    Console Help
    Dictionary Help
    Directory Access Help
    Disk Utility Help
    DVD Player Help
    Font Book Help
    Grapher Help
    iCal Help
    iChat Help
    Image Capture Help
    Mac Help
    Mail Help
    ODBC Administrator Help
    Preview Help
    QuickTime Player Help
    Safari Help
    Script Editor Help
    Sherlock Help
    Stickies Help
    System Profiler Help
    Terminal Help
    TextEdit Help
There are probably more but these are the ones I could find fairly easily. If they are labeled red then it is easy to see if any others appear and cause the issue. Once I have done this I make a backup copy of these folders with the permissions set and archive it for use as and when I need to replace them.
Result: For me and my setup this has resulted in my being able to use Help normally without the blank screen issue for nearly two weeks now since I spent a lot of time looking at this issue. In fact I find Help works a lot faster and suffers fewer delays. Because this only requires amendments to file permissions, in a folder which is automatically replaced if deleted anyhow, I feel it is a safe and easy enough for most users to do if they have this problem.
I hope this offers a solution to other users with the same issue and who have tried the other suggestions (Including Dr. Smoke's and from Apple etc) but still have problems with the blank screen.
    The Cause & Other Notes
Having been frustrated with this issue for several months now I spent some time trying to find the cause. It clearly does not effect everyone, and others have found the suggested fixes, such as trashing the com.apple.helpui cache folder and relevant preference files, have worked for them. It makes it a more complicated problem to identify. It appears perhaps to be related to your type/ speed of connection from the computer to the Apple help servers where the cache folders and files and downloaded from. This seems likely from error messages. It also appears that, for whatever reason, some of those files being automatically created when Help Viewer is launched are the actual problem. In order to explain why I think that, if you have this issue then you should get the exact same repeatable test which led me to find the solution.
    Do this:
    1. Firstly navigate to > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui and trash this folder. Then before proceeding launch the following apps to help diagnose and follow what is happening:
    a. Console [so you can watch for error message in console.log window]
    b. Activity Monitor [to watch internet traffic during launch and browsing the Help Viewer]
    c. Leave the FInder window so you can watch what happens.
    2. Launch Mac Help from the Finder menu bar. It should launch and show the home page on the screen. Immediately you will see a new com.apple.helpui folder being created. Navigate into this so you can watch what is being placed in the newly created com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Now click on any of the Help links on the right (not the link to the apple web site). Immediately (slower if dialup and not already connected) you should see traffic over the network as the computer connects to the Apple help servers. Then, in the com.apple.helpui folder you will see a new folder called 'Mac Help'. Also some other numbered (0-15) cache folders which are not of interest right now. And on quit a file called 'TOCCache.plist' which does not effect things. Soon you should see an error in the Console console.log window something like this:
"2005-11-19 01:57:45.585 Help Viewer[1313] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: * End of archive encountered prematurely at 400"
I am not sure exactly why this is but it appears to be related to some sort of timeout and failure to fully download some items.
    4. Now try to click on any link or Index. For me, nothing happens and I get only more error messages like:
"2005-11-19 02:02:21.190 Help Viewer[1313] Uncaught exception - * End of archive encountered prematurely at 400
    2005-11-19 02:02:21.190 Help Viewer[1313] * Attempt to remove unrecognized exception handler 0xbfffdce0"
The only option is to quit out.
    5. Immediately relaunch Mac Help. If it is like me then it will now be a blank screen accompanied by the following my critical error message:
"2005-11-19 02:03:33.543 Help Viewer[1319] * NSRunLoop ignoring exception '* End of archive encountered prematurely at 400' that raised during posting of delayed perform with target 375df0 and selector '_setupTOC'"
Now, everytime I quit a launch Mac Help it is the same error and blank screen.
This seemed to me to point towards an issue within the com.apple.helpui folder because when it is trashed Help Viewer will launch one time then stop.
So I went through each folder (I had a number of Help folders the first time) and tried moving it out of the folder, rather like testing for bad prefs in OS8.
Eventually I tracked the offending file/s down to this:
    User > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui > Mac Help > Contents > Resources > English.lproj > pgs > pgs.helpindex
As soon as this file is created then it all stops. Trash this file and relaunch and the homepage appears again until it appears and once again the problem reappears. This is totally repeatable for me.
Once I had isolated the problem file I tried various solutions to resolve it. The first was to replace it with the same file which is already in the System within the MacHelp.help documentation here (the system Library, not the User path)
    Library > Documentation > Help > MacHelp.help
Copy MacHelp.help and then use Command + I and 'Show Package Contents' to navigate to:
    MacHelp.help > Contents > Resources > English.lproj > pgs > pgs.helpindex
(right at the bottom of the pgs folder with hundreds of .html files)
I then replaced the existing pgs.helpindex with this one. It is different at it has an earlier Created date of 16/03/2005 (my vary), the one in the cache folder is Created 20/10/2005 (may vary?)
This allowed Help Viewer to launch correctly, but after a short time and re-launch it returned to the blank screen. Examining the file showed it was being overwritten by the later downloaded version, the one causing the problem. This led me to change the permissions to 'Read only' to prevent it being overwritten and after this the Help Viewer worked normally on relaunches.
I also changed and altered the permissions on the pgs/pgs2.helpindex folder in the same directory as the pgs folder as it seemed to also cause a problem.
So, finally I resolved the problem, with no error messages, the Help Viewer loading correctly and a working Help. However, I noticed that after a while the blank screen came back. Knowing the pgs.helpindex was OK it seemed likely that other .helpindex files in other Help folders created in the com.apple.helpui folder. This proved the case because, on trashing the new Help folder, it launched again. Swapping the downloaded .helpindex in say, Mail Help, and changing the permissions fixed it, until another Apple application Help folder was created and it re-occurred. The problem does not occur with all the Mac application Helps, but with some (notably for me, Mail Help, Safari Help and some others).
Finally I found that rather than digging into the apps contents I could get the same fix and also quicker Help browsing by simply creating the actual Help folders as described above and ensuring the .helpindex (or other folders/ files like idx) was not created.
From nearly two weeks trials it so far appears to completely resolve this issue.
Just be aware of any new Help folders/ files being created.
The are a few other observations:
    1. I tried just altering the permissions on the actual com.apple.helpui folder to 'Read only' but whilst it allowed the Help Viewer to open fine, it broke links within the application Help windows.
    2. I have not tried many Helps on other non Apple applications. I find that Toast help triggers error messages:
    "2005-11-19 02:27:02.229 Help Viewer[1340] -[IdxSearchController openIndices:] caught a VTWIN exception. Bad index file is /Applications/Toast 7 Titanium/Toast Titanium.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Toast Help/Toast Help idx
It is not possible to change the 'Toast Help idx' as it is an exec file. The errors do not seem to break Help Viewer. I had similar error messages from Quicktime Help when it loaded. I suspect that the Toast help is broken for similar reasons as mac Help b (it works for links to installed pages but not external ones). But it could be from the alterations to the Help folders. Either way at least Help works.
    3. It is possible to get most .helpindex files from the relevant application contents but just using the Help folders is a quicker solution.
    4. I can't help feel that the difference between those that have or do not have these issues is a slower connection, i.e. non-broadband. I have a 64k ISDN connection through a router which is pretty much 'always on' with solid 7KB speeds, but it seems this is insufficient for Help to work properly. I read elsewhere that connection speed appears to be an issue and Help is sensitive to this. It would be interesting to know what type of connection people with the issue have. I also have a hardware firewall in the router which may be a factor but it does not stop any other normal traffic and allows the files through anyhow. It has been in place for 6 years and with no issues. Just wanted to note it.
    5. Certainly for my situation, it appears that the files being downloaded from the Apple help servers are actually causing the problem at my end. I can't explain why or how other than the tests explained above are repeatable and that using the same file but from the System file resolves the problem. It remains unclear why a slower connection would lead to files downloading which affect some people but not others? It may be something totally different of course but the error messages in Console do seem to point towards this.
    6. I imagine the reason why the files and folders are downloaded are to ensure that they are kept up to date, as the pgs.helpindex for instance is a later creation date. However I do not seem to have any problems browsing or looking at topics, especially with the 'Include product Support Searches' option selected in the Help View menu. It means that there is extra traffic but gives a wider range of responses from Apple. Perhaps it is better to deselect this option if you have a slow dialup connection?
    Summary
I hope that this solution can help others with this issue and perhaps other related problems. There is no way of me testing it further and I do not know how others who seemingly do not have a problem can check this. I just know it resolved it for me. I am no expert but a long time Mac user who is used to simple and elegant functionality, not the ongoing saga of the current Help, and wanted the thing just to 'work'.
    Good luck
    Simon

  • TextEdit font problem

I'm having a problem with fonts in TextEdit. Some of the fonts in a particular font family are not available when I choose them either as a default font in the Preferences dialog, or as the active font in the Fonts panel. The unavailable fonts are listed, but when I select them nothing happens or the selection jumps to an entirely different font family.
The strange thing is that these fonts in question work perfectly in other OS X applications that use the Fonts panel, such as pages.
Here's a screenshot of the Fonts panel in Pages. All of the Helvetica Neue LT Com fonts are listed properly:
But here's a screenshot of the Fonts panel in TextEdit. Observe how the "Light" font is listed differently, i.e. just "Light" instead of "45 Light" as it is in Pages. Also "43 Light Extended" is only listed as "W3" in TextEdit, and there are other similar examples.
Any ideas what's going on, and how to fix it?

I don't have a solution (and I haven't noticed contradictions like yours), but I have noticed other font problems with TextEdit 1.6 in 10.6 and 10.6.1 (the version that was there when I finished installing 10.6).
If I paste in a selection from, say, a webpage and the font size is not one listed by default in its Font Menu, the size does not display, even if I use Command + or -, until it becomes one of the listed sizes. But it never displays in the top right data entry box.
Another anomaly is that pasting text that has an embedded link retains both the link and the special formatting even when using Paste and Match Style. It does not match style. If you apply Paste Style makes, that makes no difference, either. I have to either type it instead of pasting it or paste it in a Text Only file, then copy or cut it out and paste it in the RTF document. I tried selecting Edit > Substitutions > Smart Copy/Paste but apparently that refers to putting spaces between words when pasting in (I could not find it explained in TextEdit Help). I tried turning off Smart Links, but while it works with URLs, it has no effect on linked text (I am talking specifically about the kind of linkage found in the "Genre" line at IMDb.com, as an example).

  • Create a new page in Text Edit?

I know Text Edit has limited functionality but I havent been able to find any tutorials or basic information on Text Edit and eventually I may get Pages or Word for Mac, but for right now, I dont really need anything fancy so I'm hoping Text Edit will work.  Im thinking there's no reason you couldn't do a resume even on here - although I think Pages has pre-done layouts which would make it look a lot prettier.
Anyway, simple Text Edit question:  Is there just a way to create a new page - basically a page break like you did in Microsoft Word on a PC where  you would hit control+enter.  Im assuming there should be as that seems like a pretty basic function.
Also if anyone uses Text Edit regularly, can you tell me what are the basic things it can and cannot do...what do you need Pages (Or word for mac) for and for what will Text Edit suffice.  (I assume, for example, that Text Edit is not going to allow you to automatically do page numbers while Pages will)

  • Time Machine Errors

    Hi Guys,
I don't have a great deal of experience with Time Machine or in fact Apple products in general. However one of my clients who's Window machines i support has an issue with their Mac at home, so trying to help them out.
The issue is Time Machine just won't back up. Below is a copy of the error log which shows a couple of backups. The errors seam to vary each time the backup is run, and none of the common troubleshooting steps I've found appear to fix things.
When the backup kicks off it seams to run for varing amounts of time - anywhere from a couple of minutes through to about 20 minutes before it fails with the ever so helpful "an error occured" message.
From the research i've done it appears that this "error -50" indicates an issue with a set file/directory. However even when i exclude these directories, it still keeps finding more. I'm concerned there's a bigger issue than just a few corrupt files - it almost looks like i'll have to exclude half the bloody disk before it will work.
There's also other error messages, such as this "error-36", "error-8062" and a few others as you can see. As mentioned before i've tried a few of the common solutions i've found from searching online, including excluding the error files, removing the time machine config file and there was something about removing and repairing the time machine program itself from memory.
Any suggestions as to what else i can try would be muchly appreciated.

  • HT2523 Word docx file conversion and saving problems

I've recently switched back to Mac after many years as a Windows user. I was delighted to be able to open my Word documents in TextEdit, but have had to reformat certain parts of the documents (specifically, bullets, tabs, and wrap to page) EVERY TIME I open the document. These are not saved in the file. I'm happy to change the format of the documents to rtf or whatever to keep the changes, but can't figure out how to do that either. The ultimate format for these docs is PDFs, so I don't really wish to buy MS Office for Mac. I can't find anything about this in TextEdit help.

In support of your advice ....
Preview will open directly .doc/.docx Word files. The path to PDF can also be through the Export facility.
Preview is only as good as Pages when attempting to open Word documents. If the OP has complicated Word documents that will not open with Preview, then a suggestion is to download and install the free LibreOffice 4.x (libreoffice.org) application. This will certainly open Word documents.
Rather than learn LibreOffice just to convert PDF, the OP can use the following Terminal command:
    Terminal:
    /Applications/LibreOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice --headless -convert-to pdf:writer_pdf_Export sample.docx
This will write out a PDF of the input file to the current directory. Providing *.doc or *.docx on the command-line will convert all files matching this description to their PDF counter-parts. There is a --outdir argument that given a path to a directory, will place the resulting PDF there for improved organization.
The above command does not visibly launch LibreOffice. The only output is a single line to the terminal indicating that the conversion has taken place.
    Cheers.

  • Text Clippings

Highlighting text and dragging it anywhere creates a nice Text Clipping. Great. Except it always adds this totally non-traditional extension ".textClipping" at the end. (Traditional would be a simple three letter extension, like .txt or .rtf, right?) It's a problem because it eats up the very text I want to be able to see.
For example, I created a text clipping of the line "I want to see all of this text." What I get is this: I want to see all of this te.textClipping
I tried TextEdit Help but it does not have anything on the topic of text clippings, not that I can find.
I tried changing my Finder Preferences by unchecking Show all file extensions but that did not help. I only end up with the same truncated line, without the added ".textClipping" Like so: I want to see all of this te.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    nÔÔdle--hëad Per-rrr-plexed

The reason you can +"click on it and edit out the words "textClipping" and even add the actual characters it was obscuring"+ is because you can manually edit the filename. Filenames are limited to 255 characters, so even with the .textClipping extension the filename +could be+ 242 characters long (although the Finder would not display all of that in any case; you'd end up with something like "this file has a really really re...ly long name" displayed in Finder, which limits the displayed portion of the filename to ~39 characters).
The Mac OS is still able to deal with files lacking extensions, for the most part - especially those files the OS creates - .textClipping, pictClipping, etc. Historically, Macs didn't use extensions at all and instead wrote files with two forks, a data fork for the data and a resource fork for the metadata (including the creator application). In fact, the actual contents of that text clipping file reside in the resource fork, not the data fork (which is why if you open the file in anything other than Finder it's empty).
Note that double-clicking it does not open it in TextEdit, it opens in Finder. It's a clipping - did you notice that when you double click it and it "opens" you can't select text within that window? You can copy the whole thing and paste it, or just drop it into another file, but not edit it (unless you use 3rd party software like ClipEdit, which allows you to edit the data stored in the resource fork of the file).
So, once the .textClipping file is created by the OS, you can rename it. But it's the OS that sets the filename to be the first 28 characters of the clipped text. Some Apple developer (or a committee of them, knowing how these things work) decided that was enough to give an idea of what's in the clipping without being excessively long.
So, is there a solution? Of course. But what you're really asking is "is there a solution that you can implement?" and the answer to that, I expect, is no. This is not a user-settable parameter.
You might try submitting feedback to Apple (but since there likely won't be that many users with this request, I wouldn't recommend holding your breath):
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
By the way, your name, I like it. Sounds like a brain-body health spray.
Thanks! Actually, it's not neuro-anato-mist, but neuro-anatomist, as in one who studies the anatomy of the nervous system. But I wouldn't mind a brain/body health spray!

  • HT2523 textedit won't let me open a saved page; it won't let me save a version of a page; I go to Finder-Get info & all looks ok, but isn't - please help.  I can't turn textedit off or else I lose the few pages that I was working on & that went to the doc

Please help me to open my saved TextEdit pages.  Help me to "Save a version" of a revised TextEdit page.  I'm not able to do either.
This happens every once in a while, and I don't know how to undo it.  I go to Finder - Get info, and it looks like I have permission to "read and write", but nothing changes.      Thank you very much for your time and help.  : )

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?
I am running Yosemitie on a  iMac.

I assumed this would help my problem with not being able to open apps like Preview or TextEdit since I installed Mountain Lion. Instead, first I'm prompted to enter a password, then once I do that, I get an error box telling me the Library needs repairing. So I click on Repair, and once again I'm prompted for a password, which I enter, then the same error box opens, and so it goes. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • TextEdit Applescript help counter of certain words

I have tried to modify a script that finds and replaces text. My goal is to count the instances the script finds a word, say "love", and spit out the number of instances that the word "love" appears in the document so I can use it for another subroutine. Any help is appreciated.
I have this as guideline but it seems it does not work.
    tell application "TextEdit"
set myCountSign to text of document 1
    set myCount to count myCountSign
    repeat with this_word in myCountSign
if (this_word as string) is "love" then
set myCount to myCount + 1
    end if
    end repeat
    myCount
    end tell

The most obvious problem with your script is the line:
    repeat with this_word in myCountSign
This looks at myCountSign (a block of text) and iterates through it assigning each text object to this_word.
The problem is that by default each 'text object' is each character therefore you're comparing each character in the text to the string 'love' which will never, ever match. Even if the word exists you'd be performing a character-by-character comparison.
The simplest fix is to tell AppleScript to look at the words in the text, which is done simply by:
repeat with this_word in (words of myCountSign)
(note you might also need to do this for 'set myCount to count myCountSign' since this will return the character count, not the word count)
There are other, more efficient ways (such as via text item delimiters):
    tell application "TextEdit"
set myCountSign to text of document 1
set wordCount to (count words of myCountSign)
      set {oldtids, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, "love"}
log set keywordCount to (count text items of myCountSign) -1
set my text item delimiters to oldtids
display dialog "The document has " & wordCount & " words and " & keywordCount & " occurrences of the word 'love'"
    end tell
The text item delimiters approach works by breaking the text into chunks at each occurrence of the delimiter (in this case, the string 'love'). Then all you have to do is count the number of chunks (minus 1) which is a lot quicker than counting all the words, especially for large documents.
