TextEdit save as .txt?

Maybe I'm missing something, but is there any way to have TextEdit save a document as a .txt by default? It's rather annoying to have to rename the extension from .rtf to .txt every time.

TextEdit->Preferences->New Document->select Plain Text. Works like that in SL and, AFAIK, in Lion.

  • Why does a document in Textedit save as .txt when I try to save it as .html?

I am trying to save a document in Textedit as a .html and it will work at first but if I edit it and press "Save as Version" it saves it as a .txt. It is getting very annoying because I have to change it every time I open it. Please Help

I think if I understand you correctly this could work, if you uncheck the box in Textedit preferences "Add .txt........." and then do a  "save as" .html.
Then "get info" on the document and define what you want to open it with. It should only open then the way you want it to keeping the .html

  • Why cant textEdit save as .txt files?

It does not save to plain .txt. Why?

The text itself may be universal but the end-of-line characters are not. TextEdit on the Mac uses a line feed character (LF = 0x0A) as it's end of line character... the standard on Unix systems. Windows uses a combination of both a carriage return and a line feed (CRLF = 0x0D0A). It's the lack of the carriage returns that's causing the Windows machine to treat your text file as a single line. (Note that pre-OS X Mac apps used just a carriage return (CR = 0x0D) as their end-of-line character... so there are actually three variations you might run across).
Some editors can deal with all three types of end of line characters and will also let you convert a file from one type to another. I'm not sure if TextEdit can do this. I believe the editor built into Xcode can though and probably BBEdit or TextWrangler. I'm sure there are probably some Windows editors that will also deal with different line endings.

  • Saving a TextEdit file as .txt

This has been cross posted in 3rd generation Nano support, but I don't always get answers there.
I am having a problem seeing the notes I put on my Nano. I am composing and saving in TextEdit, but have been unable to save files in .txt, as specified in the Nano manual. When I did save using .txt, I got a warning saying I would also have to use .rtf. The files are saving, but I can't actually see their contents.
On my Nano, "enable disc use" is greyed out, but checked. The online documentation says this is O.K. and means the Nano disc is enabled.
Please let me know what I'm doing wrong. I really think the notes capability is a great feature. I want to use it.
    Thanks!

That saved it to .txt format, but the Ipod's still not seeing the contents of the file. Doh!
    Thanks for your help, sig!

  • Why won't pdf files save as txt?

I used Adobe Reader X on my Windows XP PC to copy multiple pdf files to txt files so I could add information to them. I didn't need them as pdf files anyway. Since having had to buy a new PC, (Windows 7), the pdf files that I 'Save As' txt files are empty once copied. I tried copying a pdf file I'd successfully copied to txt on my old PC and it too is empty once copied to txt. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Thank you for your response, but the "save as text" (.txt) is what is now resulting in an empty file. It used to produce a full text file.

  • Save as TXT, ANSI

    Hi all,
We have migrated to XI 3 from 6.5, on Win2k3 an Oracle. We have some documents that we used to save as txt for exporting data to another application, and in XI 3 the encoding used when saving as txt with DesktopIntelligence is UTF-8. In 6.5 version was ANSI. Is any place where we can configure it to ANSI?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Smike,
    1. From BOXIR2 onwards that is BOXIR3 also it is a Unicode supported application and the data in the report will be Unicode data therefore we canu2019t change the codepage of BOXIR3 to ANSI.
1.. Open the text file and apply the following workflow.
    2. File > Save As > Save as Type > Plain Text > Other Encoding > UTF8 The resulting
file will not have any problems.
    3. Would request you to visit the following link

  • Export to excel saves to .txt

    Hi All,
When an user export any file to excel it saves as .txt,
How can I solve that and what is the reason for it.
    thanks in advance.

While it would be possible to create a true Excel format document, the processing burden would be higher, it would require that Excel be on all machines (which is recommended now), and would be more likely to fail when upgrades are done to Excel.
The alternative is to use a text-based format that is recognized by Excel.  SAP opted to use a tab-delimited file.  Unlike a comma-separated value file, which has an extension of .csv, the common extension Excel wants to see for a tab-delimited file is .txt.  You may view this yourself by opening Excel, selecting "Save As..." and examining the various formats and extensions (I tested in Excel 2007).
So the best way to present this to a customer is to point out that Excel wants to see a .txt. extension for this Excel-supported format, and that SAP uses that to give the customer the ultimate flexibility with their spreadsheet software, including not having any at all.

  • TextEdit - Save .TXT With ANSI Encoding?

    Hi,
In Windows XP Notepad, the default type of Encoding for .txt files is ANSI. Can this be done in TextEdit, so that simple text files (not Rich Text) saved in either app are fully compatible with the other?

So which OS is to blame? The Mac seems to be inserting weird paragraph returns that Windows doesn't understand, no matter what type of file encoding you use (UTF-8, Western Windows Latin 1, Western DOS Latin 1).
My understanding is that TextEdit uses standard Unix type line endings, called LF (line feed, hex 0A). Windows stuff uses a different convention, CR + LF (0D 0A). If a Windows app will not display text just because it encounters something other than CR + LF, I'd say it probably has a bug of some sort.
Is there a solution to this probem?
I don't think the line endings of TextEdit can be changed. Some other apps like Text Wrangler offer you a choice in their preferences.

  • TextEdit Save Error Message "you don't have permission..."

TextEdit, in both Mountain Lion and now Mavericks, displays what appears to be a fake "Save "error:
"You don’t have permission to write to the folder that the file “XXXXX.txt” is in.
Your changes will not be saved until the problem is resolved."
I have repaired permissions several times with no result. The permissions are clean, not requiring fixing.  I am Admin.  I should be able to save anywhere, altho I have tried saving in many different places just to test.
It does not ask for the Admin password.
    Here's when it happens:
    1) Open a document. either new or existing.
    2) Type some text in it.
    3) Save -- choose destination if new and it seems to work.
    4) Start typing in the document
    5) After a few seconds I get the above error message that drops down from the title bar at the top of the document.
    6) I have to click the OK button and I can go on typing.
    Repeat
Save document, type a few characters, get error message, click OK.
    Repeat all day long.
Yet it seems that my changes have been saved.
    Most annoying.

Wow.  Why bother reading the forum if you are convinced the solution isn't going to work before even trying it?
Another viewer besides myself commented above that they repeated the process and it worked for them, so it's not exclusive to my setup.
A search for textedit revealed 97 files.  The search took 12 seconds on my eight core Mac Pro.
I quit EasyFind, opened TextEdit and made a simple change in the preferences, saved and then quit TextEdit.
I searched again with EasyFind, sorted by Modified and found eight files had been changed at the exact time I quit TextEdit.  One of those is the culprit.  I deleted them all.
No, I don't work for EasyFind, nor do I know the people, nor do I receive compensation of any type from them.  I like it and recommend it because it just plain works and I like to share good info like that with the Mac community,  (BTW, it's free)
Good luck with solving it on your end.  If you find a more scientific solution please share it so we can see how it should be done by a real tech support guy instead of an amateur like me.  (I was an Apple Var at one time, now I do some support for my friends.  I'm on about my tenth Mac, the first being a Fat Mac, and have two Macs and an iPhone at this time.  No doubt I have no idea what I'm doing)
You really are funny!  You must be a, oh never mind, I was going to name a political party.

  • Excel save as txt

    Experts,
I have a client who wants to save reports to Excel. This works from SBO, the report is auto opened by Excel. If they close this it is saved to TXT. They want this to save to Excel instead of TXT format without them having to 'save as'.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Marli

    Hi Marli,
Export to Excel function is always export file as text file. Only the macro in Autoopen.xls make it open and displayed in Excel worksheet. It has to be saved as Excel file before it closed.
    Thanks,
    Gordon

  • Save a *.TXT with the Extended Script Toolkit and Photoshop

Hi guys I need your help to figure this out:
I like to save the names of all the layers from my Photoshop document into a *.txt file.
Is this even possible with JavaScript by using the Photoshop and Extended Script Toolkit? There are some suggestions on the internet to use the ActiveXObject, but this only seems to work in combination with HTML and AJAX.
    Thanks for helping,

Take a look at the File Object… You have both read & write methods…

  • TextEdit - Save preset for Find & Replace?

    Hey, all!
Quick question... is there any way to save a preset for a Find & Replace function in the native TextEdit app in Mac OS?  I do a routine F&R using a long "Insert Pattern" (I haven't had time to learn Regular Expressions yet in order to use another app)... I'd love to be able to just do a quick F&R on a text file instead of having to build the string every time.
    Possible?
    Thanks!
    -=R=-

thnx Tom - yes, all the text is there, editable and I can add new text to it and save. But I can't search it using Find, trying unique words I see right there in the first few paragraphs atop the file. Then tried 'and' which only found two in the whole large file, embedded within a block of what I guess are formatting characters also bunched up at the bottom of the file below my original text.
Oops, I just realized now that this file is not actually an RTF, its a Word 97 .doc -- which either means I converted it at some point in TextEdit, or its the original .doc file I started long ago with my ancient Microsoft Word that I used before going to Mavericks (was able to use Word in Snow Leopard but is no longer supported in Mavericks, I think its referred to as a 'PowerPC' application.)
What should I do? Would converting it to an RTF file help, if so how do I do that?
    thanks!

  • Textedit save as missing

It's driving me crazy that I can no longer "save as" to change the format and location of a text file in Textedit.
I don't want to duplicate my file and rename it to solve the issue. Developers take note. This *****.

While Apple has not said it, claiming they "might" change is avoiding the blatantly obvious direction the company has decided to go. The infrastructure behind the change is so implemented in Lion that Apple would have to change its document-handling paradigm in order to implement Save As. Given the closeness of this function to the Duplicate command's features, and given Apple's promotion of its autosave/versions APIs to the developer community its basically said and done that Apple will not be returning to the older document handling approaches.
There is always a "remote possibility" (as is the case in everything), but in essence it's safe to bet that Apple will not revert the changes.

  • Floating Textedit 'save' window ghost

I have had this issue since I upgraded to Lion. Textedit keeps a 'save' floating window open in the lower left corner of the screen. The only thing visible is a disembodied "File Format" and a dropdown. I can't get rid of it and it's not linked to any open document. Just there. Very annoying. I can open the drop down list but nothing else. I included a screen shot with using a MS Word doc to provide a white background.

No, I'm sorry (that would be insane).
Indeed it would. I was just wondering if something was happening in the area of screwed up display buffer, or other related memory errors.
It comes back when I re-open the app.
That is weird. Probably has to do with the Autosave/Versions feature of Lion and later. TextEdit tries to always come back to the last state (i.e. a bunch of text you has already started). It may have gotten trapped in a spot it's not supposed to. Big, BIG time guessing here, though.
