TextEdit unresponsive in Mountain Lion

Hi, I have a new iMac with Mountain Lion which came with the iMac. I am finding my TextEdit to be really unresponsive at times. For example, if I try click the red 'x' to exit, it takes ages for it to wake up and ask me if I want to save or not. Sometimes it just hangs and I have to Force Quit.
Also, my Quicktime is unresponsive too and when I try open a video file it just hangs again leaving me with no option other than to Force Quit.
Has anyone else had this issue? How would you suggest I fix it?
Thanks from a first time user

File bug reports with Apple for each issue. I don't see those issues here.

  • Calendar slow/unresponsive after Mountain Lion update

I downloaded and installed OS X Mountain Lion when it came out but ever since the update the now called Calendar is so and unresponsive. For example, when I swipe or click to go to another week I get the "beach ball" and then it moves a couple of seconds later. Same with scrolling up and down. The problem goes away when turning off my iCloud calendars but then Calendar is useless to me without it.
    Any ideas?

I dragged this file onto my desktop from username/library/prefeerences:
    com.apple.iCal.plist
I also dragged these files onto my desktop from username/library/calendars:
    Email Cache.plist
    Calendar Cache
This worked for me. Thanks for the suggestion.
I shutdown iCal, logged off, and then moved the files. Then I did a complete re-boot before starting iCal again.
When I first restarted iCal it went thrrough the "Upgrading Calendars" process again.
Sorry it did not work for you.

  • MacBook Pro often unresponsive in Mountain Lion. Should I upgrade to Mavericks?

Hi, I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard about a month ago. Since then, my MacBook Pro has often become unresponsive, giving me the spinning beach ball -- or doing nothing at all -- when I have just a few applications running. (Typically, these may be Mail, Safari, iTunes and sometimes Adobe Lightroom 5.) I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 and 4GB of factory-installed RAM. It was a snappy performer in Snow Leopard. I'm wondering now if I should try upgrading to Mavericks, and perhaps get a boost from the memory compression. Or will this potentially take whatever problems are slowing me down now and make them worse? Interested to hear your opinions, thanks.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal.

  • How do you find and replace "within selected text" in a textedit document (version 1.8, mountain lion)

In the textedit version on Snow leopard it was possible to search and replace within a peice of selected text only i.e. not the entire file. This was a very useful feature because you could select a paragraph and replace all occurences of word1 with word2 within that paragraph only! This feature appears to be missing from the mountain lion version of textedit (version 1.8). Or can anyone tell me how to do it ... ?

Having 46 people view a post without replying is not unusual. Some people look at a question to see if it's something they'd like to know the answer to, and then come back  when it has eventually been answered.
I'm not sure if you need to escape forward slashes in Dreamweaver's Find and Replace dialog box, but I normally do because both JavaScript and PHP normally use forward slashes as delimiters to mark the beginning and end of the regex like this:
    var pattern = /[A-Z]{4}/; // JavaScript
    $pattern = '/[A-Z]{4}/';   // PHP
When a forward slash appears inside the regex, you need to escape it with a backslash to avoid confusion with the closing delimiter.
As you have worked out, a capturing group is created by wrapping part of the regex in parentheses.
If you want to match exactly 38 characters, you can use [\S\s]{38}. That includes spaces, newline characters, symbols, everything.
If you're trying to find everything between two tags, you can do this:
    (<\/tag_name>)([^<]+)
The closing tag is captured as $1 and everything up to the next opening tag is captured as $2.
Learning regular expressions is not easy. I don't claim to be an expert, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to solve them. If you're interested in regular expressions, there are several books published by O'Reilly. "Mastering Regular Expressions" is the ultimate authority, but it's a difficult read (not because it's badly written, but because of the complexity of the subject). "Regular Expressions Cookbook" is very good. There's also a new "Introducing Regular Expressions", but I haven't read it.

I assumed this would help my problem with not being able to open apps like Preview or TextEdit since I installed Mountain Lion. Instead, first I'm prompted to enter a password, then once I do that, I get an error box telling me the Library needs repairing. So I click on Repair, and once again I'm prompted for a password, which I enter, then the same error box opens, and so it goes. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Mountain Lion Problems: Preview, TextEdit, Reminders

Hi, just updated to Mountain Lion a couple of days ago.
Still getting used to it, and as I was poking around seeing how the new stuff works, I noticed that Reminders and Notes wouldn't open, and TextEdit and Preview still continue to not open since the Lion 10.7.4 update. Whenever I click on them, the icons bounce for a few seconds in the dock and then they disappear.
On top of that, after updating to Mountain Lion, the App Store is almost completely broken. Most of the time, I have a blank window (except for the icons at the top), and the app doesn't appear to be able to connect. Sometimes I even get an error message saying something about not being to establish a secure connection, which is weird, because Safari, Skype and iTunes seem to go online just fine. So App Store just shows a cogwheel spinning forever in the window, and my pointer turns in to a Spinning Beachball of Doom if it goes over the App Store window. In the last 2 days, App Store connected just once, and it showed the top apps charting, but when I went to look at my own installed apps list, the window went blank and the cogwheel spun up again.
Does anyone have any clue what to do to fix this?

So by accident I found a loophole in App Store cockblocking me from... well, using it at all. For some reason, normally starting up App Store caused it to cogwheel to oblivion, but using the Software Update option from the Apple Menu brought up the part of App Store that grabs updates without a hitch. So I got the new version of ML (10.8.1) from there, made a USB bootable SD card version of the ML installer, then did a clean install using that.
But for anyone else in the same situation, you may find like I did, that going anywhere else in the App Store will cause it to cogwheel to infinity and beyond again. So just get in, get the ML installer and get out of there
Data recovery hasn't gone exactly smoothly, even though I backup with Time Machine pretty much every night. But I'm where things are better than they were, and everything seems a bit snappier than before, as I guess all clean installs do... Probably I can recover everything I had before by doing everything manually. I thought Time Machine was supposed to allow this, but I guess not if you're trying to avoid carrying over corrupt settings (which seemed to be my problem). I think Migration/Setup Assistant could use a little more fine control over what you bring over or not.

  • Mountain Lion opens in Mail, a in pdf saved webpage, with textedit

When i want to send someone a webpage in pdf format Mail makes a document named: WebPage
The extension .pdf is missing. And I think that is why the file will be opened with textedit.
When the document is opened, I only see the program language of the pdf file, instead of the saved webpage.
How can I make Mountain Lion save the webpage with a .pdf extension?

This is a known issue in Pages 5's tables. Pages 5 has been out for 9 months now and there is no sign of Apple fixing the issue.
Use Pages '09 if you have it.

  • Textedit in mountain lion doesn't show icloud option or versions.

I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion this weekend.  Under Lion, Textedit would never ask me to save documents and I could access previous versions of the file, as expected.  After upgrading to Mountain Lion, textedit lost the versioning and does not give me the option to save in iCloud (it reverted back to Snow Leopard behavior).  The ML file versioning works on other apps, like OmniOutliner.
Is there an option I need to change to allow Textedit to support versions and iCloud?

FWIW, I figured out that I have an older version of textedit on my machine.  Searchlight reindexed my disk and put the older version ahead of the ML version.

  • Unresponsive applications with mountain lion ???

certain applications are unresponsive after installing mountain lion

Go to Disk Utility, select your disk and perform a Repair permissions (click that button). It might help.
Also, make sure your apps are Mountain Lion compatible. Maybe you'll need to update them.

  • Lost textedit files "untitled" with upgarde mountain lion. where does lion / mount.lion saves those files?

I probably lost some textedit files "untitled" with upgarde to mountain lion. where does lion / mountain lion saves those files?

    Lane,
That latest raw update also shows supported devices. The EOS-1Ds is still shown as supported by Mountain Lion in the knowledge base article that accompanies it. Bump!
I wonder if using Disk Utility and verify/fix permissions may restore your RAW capability.
    Don't have Aperture or Lightroom.
I installed the recent raw updates into 10.8.2. The DB5W2360.TIF file has a generic Preview icon. Graphic Converter 8.3.1 opens .cr2 files, and it opened this TIF file nicely as well. GC is willing to modify white balance with a condition that it cannot be done in place, and must be exported to a different format.
    Not much help, I know.

  • HT1338 UNresponsive Mac after loading Mountain Lion

hi i upgraded to mountain lion and surprisingly my macbook has become dead slow in accessing any process, for eg if i open my mail or sliding a page in safari etc and switching between apps the cursor goes into indefinite swirl showing the colourful disc, the mac book pro has become useless with its unresponsiveness, i have checked iboost to boost my ram which goes very low inspite of having 6gb of ram and nothing except the browser being opened, i assume some backgound process is eating up my devices memory and moreove my battery life has also been severly compromised from earlier 4-5 hours to maximum of 1.5 to 2 hours only. Please sggest ways to trouble shoot and solve my problem and getting back the mac to its normal glory
To speed up i have taken up the following procee,
    I have deleted unwanted apps,
    reduced startup process
Removed unwanted cloud based apps like google and skydrive and paused my dropbox folder
Hope this works, with te above i have noted a good improvement in batterylife but the unreposniveness is still prevalent
my  spotlight starts indexing everytime  start my mac book pro, can you please suggest why ?

Try Software Update.  I think you'll need to have Safari 6.0 under Mountain Lion.

  • Mountain Lion Finder "unresponsive" (Beach balls) when trying to copy large amount of files

Before Mountain Lion, using Lion -  transfering 999 files from my compact flash card to my SSD hard drive via a FW800 reader was SO easy. Select all, drag and drop and the transfer would begin immediately.
Now, after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I experience at least 60 seconds of beach balls and an "unresponsive" finder. Sometimes it starts to transfer, sometimes I have to relaunch finder.
I've reset the PRAM (although I didn't hear 4 beeps), the SMC, I did verify and repair disk permissions.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thank you,
    (Late 2011 15 in MBP)

iomega, lacie, 500GB, 1TB, etc, seems to be drive independent. I've formatted and started over with several of the drives and same thing. If I copy the files over in smaller chunks (say, 70GB) as opposed to 600GB, the problem does not happen. It's like finder is holding on to some of the info when it puts it's "ghost" on the destination drive before it's copied over and keeping the file locked when it tries to write over it.
This may be a stretch since I have no experience with iomega and no recent experience with LaCie drives, but the different results if transfers are large or small may be a tip-off.
I ran into something similar with Seagate GoFlex drives and the problem was heat. Virtually none of these drives are ventilated properly (i.e, no fans and not much, if any, air flow) and with extended use, they get really hot and start to generate errors. Seagate's solution is to shut the drive down when not actually in use, which doesn't always play nice with Macs. Your drives may use a different technique for temperature control, or maybe none at all. Relatively small data transfers will allow the drives to recover; very large transfers won't, and to make things worse, as the drive heats up, the transfer rate will often slow down because of the errors. That can be seen if you leave Activity Monitor open and watch the transfer rate over time (a method which Seagate tech support said was worthless because Activity Monitor was unreliable and GoFlex drives had no heat problem).
If that's what's wrong, there really isn't any solution except using the smaller chunks of data which you've found works.

Having the exact same issue. Also, on right click, many apps freeze/beachball and must force close.  Additionally, uTorrent and Transmission are not operating correctly-uTorrent constantly beachballing and unresponsive.  Right-click freezes with everything from Word to iMovie. Takes way too much time to do anything, and lots of cursor freezing, here is a sys log excerpt:

I'm having the same issue - started a few months ago and had to forcibly shut down the Mac. That killed the hard drive, so I got a new hard drive and had the Apple Store install Lion on it, then used Migration Assistant to bring files over. Since then I've upgraded to Mountain Lion and have been experiencing lots of beach balls, freezes, etc. They're so bad that I've had to forcibly shut down 3 times, and each time can't restart. Each time I've erased and done a clean install of Mountain Lion from a USB, then used migration assistant and time machine to bring files back. Just did this last night and am still getting tons of beach balls and freezes. Help please! Here's what Etresoft says.

  • ITunes 10.7 crashes all apps on Mountain Lion including Force Quit. First system wide prob with an apple computer since OSX introduced. Any ideas?

updated to iTunes 10.7  from app Store last night. After the update, iTunes opens then stalls with the "spinning pizza wheel". Force Quit is unresponsive and will not shut it down. If I then open other applications say Safari for example, the problem migrates over to Safari and it similarly stalls and becomes unresponsive. The only way to solve the problem is to manually shut the computer down. This is the most significant problem I have experienced on an apple computer since OSX was introduced because it impacts on Force Quit which means that you have to shut the whole deal down. There are obvious problems for use of Apple TV and apple store etc. ! I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 on a 27" iMac with 2T Time Capsule connected wirelessly. How do I downgrade iTunes back to 10.6? I had no problems with Mountain Lion or iTunes up to that point.

this is the exact same problem i've been dealing with for the past 2 days. after i installed itunes 10.7 for my iphone5 it would crash my mbp's lion system wide. i tried every solution i could find on google and i've actually had to reinstall lion & time machine my backups because of it. right now i'm too scared to redownload itunes 10.7. i actually feel like waiting for the "new itunes" that comes out in october.

  • Do i have a virus, or is it just Mountain Lion teething problems?

Ever since i upgraded to Mountain Lion, it has impressed me, but also shocked me. It has some really useful features, and looks beautiful, but i cant help wondering if Apple is loosing it's touch, when it behaves like Windows Vista. The first problem was that it randomly kept restarting whilst in sleep, whick causes lots of problems. That has stopped now, but the are even worse problems. Web based application ofthen crash and are unresponsive, and it denies the existance of my Air port, which it is connected to, which keeps all the backups. Also, I recently noticed a Java DMG in Disk utility, but it wasn't in finder, when i looked, so i ejected it using disk utility. These are all tell tale signs of a virus, however, it also claims that the bootcamp partition doesn't exist, (yet i can still boot from it, and use windows), and also it told me that it couldn't eject Macintosh HD, because itunes was using it. Why would I ask my best computer to commit suicide? Also, when i connect my portable hard drive to it, it doesnt show up, but if i connect it in Windows or on another Mac, it works fine. So, it's either a virus, a reliability issue in Mountain Lion, Please help.

You don't have a "virus." That's the Windows way of thinking. You have a misconfigured system. What exactly happens when web-based applications crash?
