Textslices over slices

Hi,
I've made a websitedesign in fireworks. Right now the design is ready, but something is messing up a part of my
design as I export it to dreamweaver.
The menubar on top is made of a rounded rectangle with shadow. I sliced this rectangle and shadow so Fireworks knows it's a image
that needs to stay in place after exporting it.
Now my problem is that on that menubar(rounded rectangle) I've placed text/ hyperlinks of course with slices. I can't seem to export it right, no matter
what I do, with the different slices. Even if I change the place or priority in layers, after exporting it it's in some cases just an image
and then I can't use the links or in other cases it are really links, but because of the slices over the text, the whole design is shifted,
ruined and not as I want to.
I tried to use roll over images, but nothing seems to do the trick. I tried making the rounded rectangle to a background image(this makes it even worse after exporting).
I'm out of options at the moment, and I do believe this is a very simple trick. Right now, I made the design with alle my pages in just 4 hours.. I'm trying to
get this thing going for over 5 days now.
Can someone please help??

Sure. Lots of ideas. It really comes down to what you are trying to accomplish with Fireworks.
Let's be clear here that you are not trying to build your final website from Fireworks. At this time you are only creating a prototype, yes? If that assumption is correct, I'll try to show you what I mean.
If you are planning/hoping to use Fireworks as your web page creation tool, it can be done with simple designs, using the CSS and Images export,  but I don't recommend it. I'll be happy to point you to tutorials which cover this topic in depth, but I honestly find it faster to build my production web pages in Dreamweaver, and use Fireworks for what it's great at; page design, prototyping and image optimization.
As I said, overlapping slices causes issues, further breaking up your graphics into smaller pieces. and making a very fragile, complicated table based layout when you choose to export as HTML and Images. This export workflow is really only suitable for a prototype export, because it converts your design entirely into a graphical layout, where each slice is placed in a table cell. There is no true text exported in this workflow.
If you slice "text" in Fireworks, it is automatically converted to an image. That's what slices do. For that matter, if you export as HTML and images, this export workflow will even create images of non-sliced areas, based on your choices in the Export dialog box. That's just the nature of the beast.
You either add hotspots (making sure they are above the slice web object in the Web layer) so that you can create an image map, OR if you want to show interactivity like rollover effects, delete the banner slice and add the slices to the text areas and let FW export our those text elements as sliced graphics, allowing it to cut up the rest of the design as it sees fit. FW will even generate the JavaScript to create the rollover effects in the html prototype.
Again we are just talking graphical prototype here, not finished HTML and CSS web page.
If your goal is to build out the final web page, well, that's where the duplicate page can come in handy. The first page shows your mock up design, the duplicate strips out all the elements that should not be part of the slices (like text). You can then export out the graphics cleanly and use Dreamweaver to build the final page design. Alternatively, you could just hide the text objects on the original page and export from there. It's just a matter of preference, more than anything else.
Here is a link to your page, exported as HTML and Images from Fireworks with hotspots set into the banner area for your navigation. I don't have any extra pages, so I've just set them all as null links, with the exception of the logo, which links to the PNG file. The point I'm making is that the hotspots do work on top of a slice.
You can click on your logo to view and download my first version of your testpage.
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is another link that will take you to another version of your PNG file, where I used a duplicate page.
As I said, if you're interested in trying to make FW export out a final web page, the export workflow to use is CSS and Images, but it will take planning on your part and solid knowledge of HTML and CSS to tweak the final layout. FW's CSS export is rarely a 1-click solution. Let me know if you want links to tutorials about this process.

  • How to disable slice tool's translucent green color?

    Hi,
When using slice tool to slice a page, Fireworks automatically adds a translucent green color over slices. In general this is helpful, but when I need to positioning slice boundaries precisely based on the subtle shades of underlying objects, this becomes cumbersome since the translucent green color lies over the underlying shades, making it difficult for me to spot the shade transitions.
Does anyone know how can the translucent green color be disabled while still showing the slice boundaries (not by making "web layer" invisible)?
    Bob

Go to the Web Layer and turn off the visibility of the individual slices (not the Web Layer itself). You can also use View > Slice Guides to toggle the visibility of the slice boundaries.

  • Is Fw really better for web graphics?

Ok, so I've downloaded the Fw trial to see how it's better
for web graphics than Photoshop. With Photoshop the usual problem
is that I have to mess around to turn on/off layers, copy parts of
images into new images to export transparent logos, tabs etc. so I
hoped that Fw have some intelligent slice system for one step
exports. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it. Maybe I'm
wrong but it seems to me that Fw has a very primitive flat slicing
system, no overlapping is possible. So for a very basic example if
I have a background graphics on the top of the page that I want to
export (not the entire page) and a logo *on* it that I want to
export as a transparent png or maybe just as a jpg including the
background, it's impossible, because the logo slice will divide the
page into rectangles no matter what. I don't care about
HTML/CSS/whatever I just want to export overlapping graphic parts
in one simple step by properly defined slices. Looks like I
couldn't find the one step solution I hoped for in Fw. Am I missing
    something?

In a word. Yes. It's designed to work with screen graphics,
    and handles
both vector and bitmaps well at the same time. It's got quite
    a few
    more web-centric workflows than Photoshop.
Fireworks CS3 supports multiple pages. Each page supports
    it's own web
layer, so you have much more control over slices and can
    avoid the
problems of overlapping slices this way.
Overlapping slices don't work because it's impossible for FW
    to
determine which one is the most important - and should be
    sliced in whole

I'm not clear on what you're trying to do here as you seemed
    to have
left some information out. Assuming you want a repeating
    background
image and as separate slice for the logo.
Draw a slice that covers the width of your background, by
    however many
pixels tall you need. Either lower on the page or on a
    separate page
plave the logo and slice it as well. As you are not concerned
    about the
html or CSS it's pretty straightforward from there. Just
    export the
slices, and tell FW not to include unsliced areas. In your
    html, set you
background image as a background image and your logo either
    as an inline
image or as a background image within another containing div.

  • Create a transparent swap image slice over an html slice

    I have a 990px x 400px page divided into two halves horizontally.
The left slice is a html slice that consists of an unordered list with hrefs to various pages.
The right slice is an image that I want to put some polygon hotspots with each having a swap image behavior to swap an image over the html slice and I am unsure how to put a transparent image slice over a html slice.
    Sure could use some help.
    Terry

You can't overlap slices in Fireworks, as Fireworks needs to have a clearly defined, single image to export. Overlapping slices or hotspots makes that impossible. This means that, for one thing, you can't put polygon hotspots over your left slice.

I have a such big file and I have to brake it apart why CP3
not working well with this amount of slices.
If I put some navigation in this file, it brakes totaly down.

    Hi Wolvo
Wow, I thought you had been around the community for a while.
400 to 500 slides is way way beyond the normal typical limits we
usually recommend. Typical upper limits would be 50-65 slides tops.
Sometimes as many as 100 to 125, but those would be somewhat
    uncommon.
You need to consider Daisy Chaining your projects. There is a

  • Incorrect data value selected when clicking on slicer entry in Excel Services

We have uploaded various Excel 2013 files containing pivot tables to Sharepoint 2013 and viewed the pivot tables in a browser. The referenced pivot table data is normally a SSAS tabular model. This has been working fine for over 12 months apart
    from one irritating feature.
Sometimes a clicked slicer entry does not result in the correct slicer value being selected. This typically occurs after using the mouse scroll button to scroll down a list of entries in a slicer. When using the keyboard arrow keys to highlight a slicer
value and pressing Return to select an entry, the correct value does always seem to be selected - so it appears to point to a mouse scrollwheel issue. Also, after scrolling through slicer entries using the mouse scroll wheel, there appears to be some sort
of slicer refresh problem that results in a blank entry/entries being displayed either at the top or bottom of a slicer. However, sometimes the correct 'tooltip' is shown for this blank slicer entry. One other point - when using the slicer scrollbar the scroll
down a list of slicer entries using Firefox, the problem does not seem to occur. IE does not seem to display the same type of slicer scrollbars (only active when the mouse hovers over the slicer) and so this is more difficult to replicate in Ie.
The worrying factor is that the user is often unaware that the incorrect slicer value has been selected. The problem can be replicated in both IE11 and Firefox. Also our client systems accessed via Citrix display the same problems.
    Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Graham,
i built the same version, please correct me if should your environment, is sharepoint 2013 with march 2013 update and your office also the same update. in my labbox seems the issue is not re-producible.
after some discussion with my colleague, seems there was issue similar like this back in 2010 Excel and the remedy is to update the excel services and to re-install the power pivot at SQL server. back then the issue is because when we scroll the selection,
it should be locked, so then when we scroll it may have the position to update and refresh the data. one of the workaround is by clicking the item and press enter, by doing this it will refresh the page correctly. the link was:http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29074
i tried to look at our update for the excel services 2013, there are updates in every cumulative updates but there is no particlular update regarding this issue, perhaps you may try this to check in your development environment, if should it may fix the
    issue.
to re-install the power pivot, you may need to do this on your sql side.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210708.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210671.aspxi may suggest you to check the ULS log, if should there are issues with powerpivot also, to make sure if should there are no issue
regarding power pivot. if there is no issues on the powerpivot, then you may need to open a ticket to report this issue, so that we can have a detailed checking to your environment remotely.

  • T520: Slice battery charging thresholds stuck

I bought a T520 (4240) a few months ago and, like most people around here had the same issues with pulsing fans and, on applying BIOS 1.28, CPU throttling issues. I'm not sure if the latter one is fixed properly yet, but I also have a problem with the battery charging thresholds that has me stumped.
I have the 55++ and 27++ 9-cell main and "slice" batteries. For a while I let them charge up to 100% whenever connected to AC, but then I read that a 100% charge level is not recommended for day-to-day operation.
I use Fedora 15 Linux 99.9% of the time on my T520. I wanted to set the battery charge thresholds to avoid the 100% charge level, but the "tp_smapi" Linux driver doesn't work for the T520 (yet). I read somewhere that if I were to set the charge thresholds with the Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 7, that they would work in Linux as long as the laptop was not completely powered down when switching from Windows to Linux (i.e., use a warm boot). Well, it worked. In fact it worked really well: I could even power down and remove the batteries and something, somewhere would still remember that I wanted to start charging the slice battery when it dropped below 35% and stop charging it at 80%, even when running Fedora 15.
Having used the machine for a few weeks, I found that I used it on battery power a lot and liked to "top up" the batteries over night. The 35/80 thresholds didn't really suit my working pattern. So, back in the Power Manageer in Windows, I changed the battery thresholds from 35/80 to 50/88 for both batteries (55++ and 27++). On booting back to Linux, I noted that the main battery would respect the new levels, but he slice battery was still stuck on 35/80. Back in Windows, I tried changing the levels in different ways, but the slice battery refused to charge to more than 80%, even under Windows, no matter what I did. It seems that my first change from the default (is it 96/100?) to 35/80 has gotten stuck somewhere and I cannot change it again.
I even notice in the Power Manager that the slice battery constantly toggles between charging and not charging when under AC power if I set the threshold to 85/90. Because the 80% level where the battery is stuck is lower than 85% (my new "start" threshold), charging kicks in, but it immediately stops again, as it won't go over 80%, then, of course, it starts again and stops again, and so on.
How do I fully reset the charge thresholds on the slice battery so I can exceed 80% charge?

I had kind of given up on this, but thank you KooMaster for your confirmation that I am not alone with this issue. I don't think this is a problem with the Lenovo or Windows software, as this happens to me when running Linux without either of those. My guess is that the problem is in the embedded controller (EC) firmware. It is responsible for charging the batteries and enforcing the charging thresholds (that's why they still work even when the machine is turned off).
It probably makes sense to charge each battery to 80% first, as it likely only takes half of the overall charge time to get to that level (the last 20% taking as long again). That way, we get both batteries to a useful charge level as fast as possible. However, based on your observations, it seems that someone in Lenovo forgot to tell the EC to check that the main battery has reached its upper charge threshold, not that it has reached 100%, before topping the slice battery up to its upper charging threshold.
Can someone in Lenovo please comment on this issue, as I raised it over seven months ago now and I haven't heard a single word from any of you about it? "KooMaster" has confirmed the problem on a different model with different batteries, so it seems highly likely that a quick check of the (shared?) EC firmware code and a patch will resolve this quite quickly.
(I updated my BIOS and EC firmware today and it made no difference to my problem.)

  • How do you read a cluster over DataSocket with C?

    Hello All,
I am new to Labview and DataSocket in particular, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to write a data viewer program in IGOR (www.wavemetrics.com) which will receive multi channel data being published to a DataSocket server and display the requested channel real time. In order to do this I had to write a dll in C, then import that into IGOR, which allowed me to access all the functions in dataskt.dll (DataSocket Library - NI LabWindows™/CVI™ 9.0 Help ).
I have successfully compiled this dll with the DS_Open, DS_IsConnected, DS_DiscardObjHandle, DS_GetDataValue functions and tested them by publishing and retrieving a type double from the server. The problem I am having is that the real data is published as a custom cluster of a double, two singles, and a 1D array of singles (the datapoints at that time slice).
The second input of the DS_GetDataValue function is an unsigned int which represents the type of data expected from the server. There is a list of acceptable data types is in cviauto.h, but as you can see none of them are for a cluster (or structure for that matter):
/* Use these to specify the type of a function parameter, function return */
    /* value, and a property. */
    enum {
    CAVT_EMPTY = 100,
    CAVT_NULL,
    CAVT_SHORT,
    CAVT_LONG,
    CAVT_INT = CAVT_LONG,
    CAVT_FLOAT,
    CAVT_DOUBLE,
    CAVT_CY,
    CAVT_DATE,
    CAVT_BSTR,
    CAVT_DISPATCH,
    CAVT_ERROR,
    CAVT_BOOL,
    CAVT_VARIANT,
    CAVT_UNKNOWN,
    CAVT_UCHAR,
    CAVT_CSTRING, /* null terminated ansi (multi-byte) string */
    CAVT_OBJHANDLE,
    CAVT_CHAR,
    CAVT_USHORT,
    CAVT_ULONG,
    CAVT_UINT,
    CAVT_LONGLONG,
    CAVT_ULONGLONG,
    CAVT_BASICTYPE_MASK = 0x0fff,
    CAVT_MODIFIER_MASK = 0xf000,
    CAVT_ARRAY = 0x1000,
    CAVT_BYREF = 0x2000,
    CAVT_IN = 0x4000,
    CAVT_OUT = 0x8000,
CAVT_AUTO_CLEAR = 0x0800 /* valid only for VARIANT arguments. VariantClear is called on the variant after the function call */
Then the third input is a pointer to a variable that is the same data
type. I have created a structure to match the cluster and tried to
pass that but it does not change the values of the structure.
Another thing I have tried is the DS_GetDataType function, but that returns 100 which corresponds to CAVT_EMPTY.
Is there any way to define one of these for a cluster? Is there a better way to do what I am trying to do? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Jeff VT

    Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately I do not have control over how the data is published to the server.  There are actually several clusters like I have described, each with data for a particular location during the test, all being published to the same server.  The data recording program that we have is written to accept the cluster (it is a labview program) so we don't want to change the way it is published right now.  Also we are dealing with a couple hundred datapoints in the array for each cluster.

  • Swap images while rolling over popup menu

    Hello,
I've been playing with fireworks CS5 for some days now and made a first attempt on a website.
So far, i've made a navigation bar with two states in order to be able to add a simple roll over behavior, e.g. darkening text on rollover. I also have been able to make a dropdown menu (popup) via slices.
Then I decided to swap images when on nav bar headings. So far, so good.
When I did a preview in my browser, it appeared that as soon as I was leaving the nav bar, the image swapped back to the old setting. Perfect.
But when I did a mouse over on one of the dropdown menu's of the navigation bar, the image swapped back as well.. I've been trying, but didnt manage to find out how to fix this.
So, is there anyone here that knows if it is possible, and if so, how to keep images swapped to a second stage as long as the mouse is on the dropdown menu, but swaps back to the original state when leaving the dropdown and/or the navigation bar.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Bryan,
It may be possible to cheat and put this onto the button:
the option that you want is called TITLE.
if you set one of the other parameters (e.g. the label)
    to be:
    LABEL_TEXT" TITLE="TITLE_TEXT
basically when it adds the text onto the form it will wrap it in "
If it doesn't strip out the " from your text you should get your extra parameter.
it may slip past the portal checking.
I can't test it as I only have WebDB, but I have done something similar with javascript in WebDB.
    good luck

  • Can you change rollover text in the same slice for different triggers?

Hi, I haven't used Fireworks since version 3, which was about 6 years ago, when I dabbled in web development.  My past has come back to haunt me, and I need to make a fairly simple website pretty quickly for my boss.  I've got myself CS4, and now that I've figured out that you can't use buttons for disjoint rollovers, I'm starting to make progress...
What I want to achieve, is that there are 6 'buttons' on my page, which when you rollover them will display text in a box to the side.  I would use separate boxes for each button, but there isn't enough space on the page, as there is quite a lot of text, so I would like to use a box in the same place to display any of the 6 texts, depending on which button is rolled over.  Can this be done?
I probably haven't quite got my head round layers, and this may be very simple, but could someone please point me in the right direction, even if it is a link to the right bit on product help?
Because the button disjoint rollover doesn't work, I have created 6 slices for the triggers.  I tried hotspots first, but couldn't use them as I also want a rollover live filter effect on the trigger.

Yes, you can trigger different slice contents on rollover from multiple other slices.
It's easier to show than describe, so here is a sample file that does what I think you're looking for:
    (1) six buttons
    (2) each button has unique text
    (3) each button has a rollover state
    (4) unique text is displayed in the same place for each button on rollover
    Hope this helps!

  • Slices - HTML and CSS??

    Hello,
I was wondering if someone with extensive experience with HTML and CSS AND PS could help me with my question:
I have been marking up HTML and CSS for some time now using a basic text editor. As my designs have advanced, so has my ability in Photoshop and Illustrator. I came across a tutorial where someone is using PS to convert slices into HTML and CSS. Now, I have always used a text editor for HTML and CSS so this is all VERY new to me. Why would someone want to do this (wouldn't you have MUCH less control if you let PS write out your HTML and CSS for you)? What are the PROS and CONS to using Photoshop in this way over designing using text editors? Is this method of converting slices for people who don't want to learn HTML and CSS or is this a very valuable tool even for people who know HTML and CSS thoroughly?
    Thank you in advance....

The output is plain HTML/CSS so you have the same control to go back and edit it by hand.
This all goes back to the concept of prototyping. When you are working up designs for a client you probably don't jump straight to typing HTML/CSS. You either present hand sketches or mocks from Photoshop. The idea is that if you have created a decent mock-up in Photoshop, you can proceed to slice it up to become the actual design.
For a path to thousands of pages discussing the pros and cons of this concept, go here:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=web+prototyping+photoshop
Photoshop web prototyping is evolving. ImageReady was dropped and with the acquisition of Fireworks from Macromedia (which does the same thing as Photoshop - - but many web designers claim it does it better), the future is uncertain regarding where Adobe will go. Good luck on finding an ideal workflow. I'm still looking too.

  • Exported slices not working in Dreamweaver

I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I
created a simple rollover in fireworks, an image that when you
rollover it will reveal text. I followed instructions from a
tutorial, created my duplicate frame, everything looked great when
I tested the rollover in preview in fireworks but when I exported
to dreamweaver the rollover didn't work. I exported images with
html, I didn't say just this frame, not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I know this should work. Any suggestions would be very much
    appreciated.

The point Stephane is making - and rightly so - to use the
    right tool
for the job. I can create html files from MS Word, but I
    won't, because
of how Word generates the html (or at least how it *used* to.
    No idea
what it does in the latest iteration). FW generates passable
    html, but
it is NOT an html editor.
Example 1: It doesn't export text as text unless you ensure
    you create
html slices, and even then, if the output is a table layout,
    the layout
can explode if the text content is changed or even altered in
    size by
    the user.
Example 2: Its comprehension of CSS is very poor, if you
    think of the
program as a web page editor. As a graphics editor, hey at
    least it can
export layers. With the addition of the Smart CSS extension,
    things are
even better, but that is not native FW functionality.
Knowing your way around "under the hood" of a web page is
    still an
important skill *if* you are producing content for clients
    and being
paid to do it. IMO, that is part of what being a professional
    is all
about, and it's worth noting I make a distinction between the
    professional and casual user.
Very often we assume on this forum that those asking
    questions are
either in the profession, or planning to be, so at times the
    advice
given may seem a bit - impassioned - shall we say. But this
    is done for
a good reason. To help steer people down the right path. To
    help them
understand that there may be better, more standardized,
    consistent or
even just preferred ways of doing things in a professional
    manner.
FW's html has improved over time, but the program is not
    intended to be
a web page creation tool; it's a graphic design tool. As the
    software
evolves, maybe this will change somewhat, but no one can
    really say.
Now if you're just building a site for fun and are not
    concerned about
all that high-falluting pro mumbo jumbo, then hey, as
    Heathrowe says, go
ahead. And by all means use FW as a learning tool. Just
    understand there
are tools more suited to the job of creating html pages than
    FW.

  • Compilation failed due to timing violations, Getting Xflow error and resources over use.

    Hi,
I am extensively using Fixed point math library functions which i have downloaded from NI website in my FPGA application.I am getting following errors while compiling the code.
I would like to know is there any limitations in using fixed point functions?
I am configuring all funtions as a 64 bit word length and 32 bit integer length in cofig parameter set up and all are outside the timed loop.
Apart from below error it is occupieng LUT's 300% in one simple VI (mathematical calculations using fixed point functions).
So i would like to know is there any way to optimize the code?.
Status: Compilation failed due to timing violations.
The compile process reported a timing violation.
    Suggestions for eliminating the problem:
      * For Timed Loops with timing violations
          - Reduce long arithmetic/combinatorial paths
          - Use pipelining within Timed Loops
          - Reduce the number of nested case structures
      * Reduce clock rates if possible
      * Recompile
Refer to the LabVIEW Help for more information about resolving compilation errors. Click the Help button to display the LabVIEW Help.

The Fixed Point Library is certainly not a demo, and we encourage you to use it extensively.
Really? "Demo" is perhaps too strong a word, but the NI Labs page says that the toolkits there "aren't quite ready for release" and are "experimental prototype"s. My understanding was that they work, but are only meant to show potential future products and get feedback on them. If this is not the case, perhaps the wording needs to be changed.
I know I wouldn't want to be using something throughout my code and then find out that it is not supported when the next LV version came out because it was only a prototype. Can you promise support into the future for these? If you can't, that should be clearly stated.

  • When saving for web in cs5, I get slices saved. How can I change this preset?

Since I started using photoshop cs5,  every time I save for the web, I get slices saved, what's annoying about  this is the fact that instead of getting the images or slices in this  case, saved in the folder I select, it'll automatically create an image  folder and then I have to go over the folder and rearange all the images  again, it's really time consuming.
Is there a way to  avoid this, so that when I select the slices I want to save, they'll go  directly to the folder I want instead of having an extra images folder  created within my folder...
    Thank you

In the save for web dialog under output settings>saving files, uncheck
    Put images in folder.
