TFT screen blinks strange at wake up

Hi folks,
since a few weeks I got strange problem with my TFT screen. My mini is setup to put the monitor to sleep after 20 minutes inactivity. This works flawless. However, every time the screen wakes up it starts with about one minute blinking of 'show proper image' and 'show blank screen'. It is more or less like each second switching on and off. The power LED stays on all the time, so I think it is not the power supply of the TFT.
Connection to the TFT is via DVI cable.
I tried the TFT on a laptop with VGA connection and could not find any issues. In fact I could wake up the screen and than switch back to DVI and the image stayed fine.
I tried the TFT now in my office also with DVI connection, so far no issues here.
This leads me to the assumption that something with my mini is broken. Could it be that the graphics card or the graphic card memory has problems? Is this something that lifetime warranty would cover?
Display is a Samsung Syncmaster 173T about 6 to 7 years old.
Any help appreciated.
Fogg

Quick update....
I exchanged the screen with a DELL 17" from work and this works flawless. No issues so far.
Strange enough, the Samsung works in the office with the same ease.
I will re-exchange on the weekend and see if the problems comes up again. If not than it was some kind of connection problem. If yes, .... no plan.

  • Screen blinks/flashes upon wake from sleep. is this normal?

I just got my Macbook a few days ago and started to notice that my screen flashes or blinks when it wakes from sleep. I have searched on Google and haven't seen any one post about it so I'm guessing this is normal. This is not the flicker of brightness that other people are talking about.
What happens is: I press a key or open the lid to wake it from sleep, and then very briefly for a second I will see the screen flash on (sometimes you can see a small image of the desktop), then it is black for a second, then the screen comes on normally. The delay of the screen coming back on after the blink seems to be getting longer so I was starting to worry this might be a problem. (granted the delay of the screen coming on is maybe like 2 seconds, but its noticeable) I had a Thinkpad previously and never noticed the screen acting like this.
If anyone can tell me if I need to bring this in to the nearest store or if it is normal I would appreciate it. I don't want to overreact as this is my first Mac and I don't have any problems so far. But I want to be safe if this is an indicator of future screen problems. Thanks!!

Take it to your local Apple store and they will send it off for repair. Or call Apple and they will send you a box to mail it in for repair.
I took my MacBook to the Apple store for the infamous screen flicker problem and they had the logic board and the LCD replaced. Problem is gone and the screen is better than before!

  • Z77A-GD65 Multiple BIOS Issues - B4 Hang, Splash Screen Blinking

Back in November 2012, I built a home server with a Z77A-GD65.  Lately, I've noticed some strange things happening that I've been trying to research but to no avail.
First off, I get the B4 code hang-up whenever I'm booting.  This doesn't matter if it's a cold boot or a reboot, it hangs on B4 for about 10-15 seconds, flashes 92 really quick, and then goes to A2 which it stays for another 5 or so seconds.  After that I get the MSI splash screen for about 1 second, then it blinks 5 times.  After that it goes into Windows just fine.
The blinking is a new issue, the B4 hang is not.  I've read from multiple posts that this is a USB issue.  When I disable USB legacy support, the issue goes away, but of course then I can't have legacy support.  I have yet to figure out what exact device is causing it.  In the process of trying to figure this out, I updated BIOS to A.A0.  After updating to this version of BIOS the splash screen blinks 5 times before going to the "Starting Windows" splash screen.  This is a more difficult issue to figure out why it's doing this because if you search for "BIOS" and "flash" or "flashes" or "flashing", you typically get results for flashing your BIOS.   Hence, why I'm using the term "blinking".  But even then I can't really find a solution out there.
I also happened to see that the website for the Z77A-GD65 is showing a newer BIOS version, but I'm unable to flash this (at least using M-Flash).  I threw it on a USB, re-enabled USB legacy and whenever I click on it to install, the BIOS screen hard locks.  The screen just freezes exactly where it's at in the BIOS and the mouse is dead.  However, I can CTRL+ALT+DEL on the keyboard and it will reboot the system so I don't need to power cycle the computer.  Not sure why this is happening either.  Perhaps I need to flash this a different way?  Maybe I don't need to flash this at all?
I could really use some input here on why this is happening.

    Probably a USB device problem.
This is a candidate, as well as mouse and keyboard. Disconnect USB devices one at a time to find the culprit.
A lot of devices running. PSU a +12V single rail or is it multi rail? A rail going to the graphics or components may not be enough amps. My best guess is the card reader.
    For UEFI/BIOS flashing, select your mainboard here and use the forum flash method;
I'll definitely try unplugging some of these USB devices to see if that helps with the B4 hang issue.
As for the PSU, according to the description for it on Newegg:  "Four industry-leading independent +12v rails are provided for more stable and safer power output."  It has two rails going to the GPU.  The GPU is a new addition to the system and so I wasn't running it until recently.  The issues were occurring beforehand, but you're right that this PSU is underpowered for the rig considering PowerColor recommends a minimum of 500w.  I'm going to be buying a larger capacity one sometime in the very near future.  Any recommendations on good modular PSU's?  What's a good way to tell what wattage to get?
Thanks for letting me know about the forum flash method.  I'll be back later when I have some results.

First try a hard reset.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If still no luck, try downloading another free app from the App Store.

  • Macbook 13" screen blinks?!!

    Hey
I've connected my macbook to a TV using the apple mini-dvi to video adapter.
however, when it's connect both screens (the macbook and the TV) is blinking every other minute, which is quite annoying!!
Does any of your know what causes this? the macbook is not "blinking" when it's not connected to the tv!
    Thanks guys!
P.s. by "blink" I mean the screen are turning off for a short sec.

So do both screens blink out in unison or in an unrelated manner? And when they blink out, do the screens go black and then come back, or black then blue then come back, or ???. Please describe as completely as possible because the soluton could be tied to the precise nature and timing of the symptom.
Also, how are you connecting to the TV? Is it by composite or S-Video? And what kind of TV is it? An old style, CRT TV or a newer flat panel type?

  • Java JTable Screen Blink Problem.

    Dear All,
I am facing Screen blink issue while using the JTable.
JTable is updated in real Time, It uses custom table model.
To update the JTable, I update the Table Model and then call the UpdateUI() and repaint(). These update process is running in non-AWTevent-dispatch thread. So, During the real Time Update of the Table, When we do some rough handling work on the Table( for example, press the Enter Key on the Table for 1-2 minutes, move the Scroll Bar up and down fastly etc), It throws the following exception and the Table starts blinking.
    java.lang.NullPointerException

The blinking also moves to Other Components such as JTree which is doing real time update in another screen of the Same Application.
How to resolve this Screen Blinking Phenemenon ? Some suggested to use SwingUtilities.invokeLater() for UpdateUI(). But, I am concerned about the performance, using it in real time update as it may create many threads, it may cause other performance issues. Is other any other better solution ?
Looking forward to your comments !
    Thanks !

To update the JTable, I update the Table Model and then call the UpdateUI() and repaint(). No need to call updateUI() (I'd like to shot the person in the forum who keeps suggesting that and shot the people who keep using the method without reading the API to see what it actually does) or repaint(). You simply update the TableModel and the table will repaint itself.
Here is a simple example of real time updates to a table from a non-GUI thread:

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro Screen Blinks

Hello, the evening before going abroad, my MBP screen began to blink on and off to a black screen before returning to a temporary normal state. I have tried a PRAM reset and noticed that the boot screen runs fine with no flicker, but both the login and desktop screens blink? The battery is due for replacing soon, but I don't see the this having any impact on the screen blinking? I have searched for an appropriate EFI update but have not seen one
Has anyone come across this before on the 13"? Or has anyone got suggestions to resolve this issue?
    Many Thanks in Advance!!!

I have the same problem with my late 2011 MBP 15
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/t/160161/apples-2011-macbook-pro-lineup-suffering -from-sporadic-gpu-failures
It seems to be a common problem, and a pretty expensive one to fix. I am hoping to be able to use the consumer rights we have in Sweden to get it fixed for free.

  • Nvidia GeForce 9400M makes my MacBook Pro screen blinks

    I am using a Macbook Pro 2.4MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3.
That's the one with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M and the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT.
Using the Nvidia GeForce 9400M, as my default video card, seems to make my screen blinks. That is random.
Apple's Hardware Test show no problems.
When I am using the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT the screen blinks stops.
I am sure that all started after updating to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.5.
Is this a software problem or there is a problem with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M chip?
Does any is experiencing the same problem?
+the problem withe the screen blinking is quite old. I am mostly using my Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT as my default video card with no problem at all, but I want to be able to use my Nvidia GeForce 9400M because of the better battery life.
    Any help will be valuable.+
    Tom.

I have the same issue with mine and sadly I missed the date to get Applecare on this machine (they usually call but this time around they didn't).  ***** that I didn't get this resolved before my warranty ran out .. I'm certainly not going to shell out for a replacement motherboard out of pocket.  I now use the 9600 graphics exclusively and can almost watch my battery drop by the minute.
On a side note I'm not very impressed with the quality control Apple has had with their portables in the last few years.  I bought this unit refurbished and it took two units to get one that worked properly, and even then this one never did as it's had this video blinking issue since day one.  The problem is I didn't really notice it until recently when I started using it running more often on battery and decided to use the mobile chipset to save battery time.  This is the third MBP I've had and their 3rd MBP that's had motherboard issues.
When it comes time to replace this one I'm seriously considering going with a macbook air or something else.  Can't justify spending the money on more MBP's with such terrible track records.

  • Macbook pro screen blinks after connecting it to LED Cinema Display

Hello, just bought a 27 LED Cinema Display to connect my macbook pro 17 (early 2009).
Everything fine until today. After disconnecting my laptop to the display the screen of laptop blinks.
    Never had this problem.
    I would appreciate any help.

...but I need to be sure that my macbook will not stop working if I leave the problem with the screen blinks.
Of course you do — we all need to be sure our machines will keep working properly. Unfortunately, there's never any certainty about that, even if one's machine is working perfectly right now. But if it's any consolation, I've seen nothing posted in these forums to indicate that the blinks commonly foreshadow anything worse, so I think you can be reasonably confident that your machine isn't at the start of a predictable course of deterioration.

Hello everybody, I have exactly the same problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1807105&start=480&tstart=0
My laptop is out of warranty, the Apple service in my country (Bulgaria) is very poor and I want to get the things in my hands. I have some questions:
    1) My laptop display bliks - ok, its alright, maybe anoying but everything else works. Is it a problem to work with the display blinks or after few months my laptop will have other problems or will stop working?
    2) Is it possible to found parts on the internet and repair it. Someone told me that I can found the needed parts on ebay but I see only logic boards for over 700$ I have only this issue with my laptop - the screen blinks, everything else is fine.
I'll be happy to hear some opinions from users who already have solved this problem. Thanks

  • Trying to install snow leopard on my Macbook Pro.  After already having problems with Grey screen, blinking file with a question mark, etc.  Computer now says that one of the hard drives is failing. The "hitachi" drive says it's failing in disc utility.

o.k.  So, I've been tinkering with several "self help" fixes for several days now with no positive results.  I'll explain my initial problems and then end with my most current situation.  In hopes that someone out there will have a good suggestion or possibly remedy for the issues i'm facing
First, my problem started after my wife played a game on my macbook pro and the computer froze.  She went into a panic and decided to shut down via power button.  When computer restarted she got the blinking file/grey screen and that problem continued for a couple of days before I began using steps from various support topics from apple concerning the grey screen/blinking file folder.
Ultimately, yesterday I decided to erase my Macintosh HD file as one tip suggested.  Following the brief online and on screen (via the process) tips that were there.  Once that was completed I attempted to reinstall snow leopard (my most current version on hand) into the pc.
At first, I thought this would work.  It looked promising.  But, after several hours the installation screen returned with failure.  I attempted to repeat.  And, even repair drives during this try and re-try process.
Now, today, one of the drives..  "hitachi..." states that it's failing and is in red letters with no ability to repair via the disc utility screen.  The Macintosh HD drive shows that it's o.k. But, this drive is listed under the HItachi drive so I think that's where a problem might lay.
So, I guess my question really revolves around.. What if anything can I do to get the hitachi drive back up?  (short of taking it to a repair facility and replacing.)
And, how on earth can i get my OSX back up to I have a laptop again.
Operating on a macbook pro here.  It's my lifeline.  Otherwise, I am using a Windows desktop that i'm not that fond of.  lol
I'm trying to bring this 2006 laptop back to life.  Trying to avoid a rather expensive repair or the purchase of a new laptop.  Also expensive...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • Screen Blinks for a second straight after login. Please Help!?

    First, these are my system info;
Product name: HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC
Product number: F6C80PA#ABG       (0 is a zero not an oh)
    Keyboard revision: KBC Version 93.51
    Total memory: 8.00 GB
    Processor name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz
    OS Name: Microsoft Windows 8.1
    OS Version: 6.3.9600 Build 9600
    System Type: x64-based PC
    And, these are my graphics drivers installed;
Graphics device 1: NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M
    Installed Drivers: nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2um
    Driver Version: 9.18.13.4052
    Driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\nviddmkm.sys
    Graphics device 2: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600
    Installed Drivers: igdumdim64.dll, igd10iumd64.dll, igd10iumd64.dll, igdumdim32, igd10iumd32, igd10iumd32
    Driver Version: 10.18.10.3304
    Driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\igdkmd64.sys
    Current resolution: 1920 x 1080
    Refresh rate: 60
so I have this smart alternating switch thingy for my graphics which i suppose that
the screen utilizes either of these two depending on the demand for graphic resources
e.g. it switches on Intel HD graphics 4600 for displaying low-qual and NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M for displaying high-qual
to save power consumption or something that's as far as I know about my display drivers.
My laptop is reasonably new I think it's less than a year old
so i'm a bit overly pissed right now that my laptops showing symptoms of wearing.
so as the title suggests I've been noticing that when I startup and input my password,
and just as I press enter, the whole login screen blinks once very briefly and then loads up the desktop.
I know this seems only a minor issue and surely i have no major problems with running the machine
but I've been seeing forum posts of people having the same issue
and that it's a problem associated with malfunctioning graphics drivers.
So I thought maybe if the screen blinks before loading up the display,
then whatever media that I load up afterwards would not be displayed properly, since the driver is not working properly.
And since I believe that my NVIDIA display drivers are certainly capable of displaying some high graphics material
I thought maybe that I may be trashing the benefits of using a reasonable graphics card by not fixing this problem.
So I was just wondering if there's a way to resolve the blinking screen before startup problem,
which I believe is most likely to be indicating that my machine is not correctly detecting the display drivers installed
and hence is not showing any media as good as they should be showing.
I guess maybe I'll have to re-install the graphics drivers,
but I'm not sure if I would be luckly enough to run a "clean" re-install for "Both" the Intel HD Graphics and NVIDIA Geforce Graphics without confronting any technical disasters (i.e. me wrecking my machine)
So please help me with this!
and if a re-install is needed as such, please provide as many minute details as possible.

    Hello @Aster_Wales,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how there is an issue of image flickering after you log in to your computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To ensure that your notebook's drivers are up to date, I recommend following this document on Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8). This should help with returning your system's original software and hardware drivers. To update these new drivers, I also suggest following this resource on Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 8).
If you still see your screen flicker after logging in, I recommend performing a system restore to a point before the screen started to flicker. This can be done by following this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
Should the screen continue to flicker after using a restore point, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of your Operating System. This can be accomplished by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8). This should help to recover your system back to factory defaults.
If the issue persists, please call our technical support at 1-800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region please click the link below to get the support number for your region.
