TG797n v3 dropping connection after connecting External HDD

Hi All, I have a Seagate SRD00F2 external HDD that I'd like to network on the TG797n v3. Problem is, as soon as I connect it the whole modem starts to drop out and reboot itself. The HDD has an external power supply, but not a switch to power it up. After reading some other posts I'm concerned that this hard drive still needs USB power as well which is causing the modem to crash/reboot. Would a powered USB hub be sufficient to connect the two devices, or do I need to change my external hard drive? Product suggestions would be appreciated.

hey , Thats' a 2 TB harddrive, right? Which of the ports on the TG797 do you have it connected to - the back, or the side? I'm a tad confused, because the Seagate has it's own power supply, and you should not need a powered hub as well. I know some people have had issues, because IIRC, this is a USB3 drive. So some steps I suggest - run a test on the Seagate drive by connecting it to a PC and run the Seagate diagnostics (download them from Seagate), just to eliminate the drive as havig an issueTry a different port on the ModemTry a different USB drive as well, as I doubt the modem will like the separate hub, for instance As an aside,  after the modem reboots, does it "see" the Seagate drive, or does the TGN797 continue to misbehave?

    It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

  • Can I connect an additional External HDD through USB?

    Hi,
    I would like to know if it's possible to connect an additional external HDD to the Time Capsule and share it like on the AirPort Extreme with "Hard Drive Sharing".
    I think it's called an AirPort Disk, through USB.
    Thanks!

    I had two drives, two printers and a powered USB hub. The best I ever got the AEBS to read was the two printers and one drive. I haven't tried it yet with the Time Capsule as the hard drive onboard made the the other two expendable.
    I still do have access to the secondary drive but am in the middle of an archive of the time capsule as there's something wrong with the Time Capsule drive or directory. Once I get that straightened out I will test two drives in the hub and see if Time Capsule is any better suited to multiple externals.

  • Connecting a Thunderbolt external HDD to FW800 port

    Can I read/write from my late 2009 iMac to a Thunderbolt external HDD by connecting from the FW800 port on the iMac through a Thunderbolt to FW800 adaptor on the external HDD? I have a new MacBook Pro and want to be able to swap an external HDD between them with maximum tranfer speeds on each.

    It's for video files for editing depending on which computer I want to work on at the time (and location). It's not a drama, just trying to make it easier for myself and not keep too many big files on the internal drives. I can also put one of my FW800 drives on the MacBook and transfer between the two external drives (or MacBook and FW800) and plug it back on the iMac.
    Or I could buy a new iMac when I win the lottery!
    Thanks for you help and suggestions anyway. Much appreciated.

  • Can I connect two USB external hdds at once?

    Can I connect two external hdds by USB at once and then transfer between the two?

    Yes. The practical limit is 126 drives (you need the appropriate USB hub to do that, of course )

  • USB port gone after ejecting external HDD

    All software uptodate.
    I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
    Any ideas?

    After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.

  • Oracle Inactive Connections after connection.close()

    Hi,
    I've the following problem: although I close the oracle connection, the connection is kept inactive (in the oracle enterprise manager console), and after a while the maximum number of connections is reached.
    I'm using the oracle oci8 driver (oracle 9.0.2).
    is there anything else that I need to do to realy close the db connections ?
    thanks,
    Joo Portela

    I don't know if this is your problem, but many programmers end up leaking connections by not handling the exceptions correctly.
    You need to be doing something like:
    try
    // get connection
    // do work
    con.commit();
    catch (Exception e)
    LOG.Error("Something bad happened");
    LOG.Error(e)
    finally
    con.close();
    In other words, use finally to gurantee execution of close...

  • My macbook slows down after using external HDD

    When I use an external drive via usb, my computer really slows down giving me no choice except reboot.
    I watched memory usage with activity monitor. Free memory decreases  by time and inactive memory increases with the same amount and others  don't change much. If I continue using -esp. reading-, free memory comes  below to 100MB and then increases a bit -I think it starts paging  =other applications' memories= to system disk-, then continues to  decrease. Closing the application -that use the external- do not relese  memory from inactive to free but ejecting the external does. After  unplugging and trying to use the other applications, I face very  sluggish performance so that rebooting becomes a better-fast choice.  Both NTFS and FAT partitions produce the same result and I don't have  any other partition.
    If I try to re-read the same file after the external drive stops  spinning (sleeps), it does not start spinning but trying to read another  file makes it start spining. This makes me think about some -overdone-  caching problem, but don't know what causes it and how to turn it off  (Tuxero's caching is already disabled in the preferences, although I  think it is only for writing only).
    I made some research and found nothing specific; they tell to  reinstall the os or format the drive -to HFS+ -. What is causing this?
    Note: All of my drives are in Spotlight's exclusion (privacy) list and using another usb slot did not change a thing.

  • IChat AV 3 drops immediately after connecting

    OS X.4.8 on both machines, latest iChat AV 3.1.5, one machine is a MacBookPro, the other a PowerBook G4, both attached to wireless networks, connecting over AIM. We can connect and actually see and talk for about 3-5 seconds, then it freezes on both ends and we get an error message about a disconnect, send details to Apple.
    I've searched through the threads and tried to change the speed of QuickTime to no more than 1.5mpbs, changed the Bandwidth limit in iChat to 1mbps, no good. I have one .Mac account, could set up a second one for the other user if that would help.
    Any more thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Hi Miles,
    Do you have a modem, sepepate router in combination with a phone box?
    (For Vonage phone boxes this works) The recommended set up is
    (Vonage) cable modem > Vonage box > AEBS > computer.
    And that is not the right way for iChat to work.
    (Some VOIP systems (like Vonage) are using the same port as iChat.)
    If you do have a phone box (capable of VOIP) this is worth a try,
    if there's no (Vonage) VOIP phone box disregard this post)
    1. Disconnect the power and/or shut down all device connected to your network. These devices include your Cable/DSL modem and router. Also please shut down the computers connected to your network.
    Connect an Ethernet cable from the Cable/DSL modem's Ethernet port to the WAN/Internet port on your existing router (if not already connected).
    2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN/Ethernet port on your existing router to the WAN/Internet port on the Telephone Adapter
    3. Note: If all Ethernet ports are occupied on your existing router, please disconnect an Ethernet cable from one of the ports of the router and connect that same cable to any Ethernet/LAN port on the telephone adapter.
    4. Re-connect the appropriate power supply to the Cable/DSL modem.
    5. Power on just the modem and wait for the modem to synchronize: most cable modems have a cable or online light that should be lit solid. Most DSL modems have a DSL light that should be lit solid.
    6. Re-connect the appropriate power cable to your existing router.
    7. Power on your existing router and wait for it to synchronize. Most Cable/DSL modems have a computer Activity, Data, or Link light that should illuminate and may either flash or light up solid when there is connectivity between the modem and your router.
    8. Connect the Power cable provided with the Phone Adapter to the POWER port on the Telephone Adapter.
    9. Wait at least five minutes for the Telephone Adapter to boot up and synchronize with the Service. The Telephone Adapter's power light will blink while the device is connecting to the Service. When the telephone adapter has successfully connected to the network, the power light should be solid. There may be updates that need to be downloaded such as new firmware or changes to your features. Do not interrupt the configuration process by unplugging the power or lifting the receiver on your phone during the startup process. Interruption of the startup may result in interruption of service.
    10. Once the Telephone Adapter's power light is solid, the telephone Adapter is should be ready to use.
    11. Connect a telephone to the LINE/Phone 1 port of the Phone Adapter using a standard phone cord.
    12. Pick up your telephone receiver and listen for a dial tone. If you hear a dial tone, you have finished the installation and can begin making calls.
    13. Restart your computer and verify that you have internet connectivity with your computers.
    Hope this can be helpful,

    Hello,
    after my N78 connects to PC Suite (7.0.8.2) via bluetooth, the mobile tries to establish an internet connection via GPRS or WLAN.
    Any ideas how to stop this?
    Thanks!
    Best regards
    Franz

    That did the trick.  Thanks!
    First I just changed the channel, but that didn't fix it.  So then I changed the SSID, WEP and made the WEP 128 this time instead of 64.  And I'm good to go.  So I thought I was a pretty knowledgeable guy about this stuff, but I'm confused why that was causing just my internet connection to restart.  If you have the time can you educate me please?

  • How to change the letter on external HDD

    My external hard drive was originally on the F drive and with this I had all my iTunes music too. However, for some reason, my computer has stopped recognizing the F drive; the following message is displayed when trying to open this drive:
    "The drive or the network connection that the shortcut 'F Drive.ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."
    The problem I now have is that the external hard drive is now the G drive and iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the path (G:\iTunes) I have told it to use, i.e., my music is not loading properly and only a small fraction is playable.
    Can anyone help me on this matter?

    Hi
    I would recommend changing the external drive letter (G:) back to F.
    Do you know how to do this?
    After the external HDD was connected you should access the disk management and there you will see the HDD (single partitions) and the other drives.
    Then you should mark the external HDD and should change the letter to F.
    Possibly the F letter was reserved for another drive.
    In such case you have to unlock the F letter by assigning another letter to the drive which uses the F letter.
    For details please check the Microsoft knowledge document;

  • Does Time Machine backup External HDDs?

    Hello everyone, I plan to use a Mac-Mini as an HTPC, and want to use a large external HDD connected DIRECTLY to the mini as my storage (call it HDD-A).
    If I connect a second external HDD dedicated for TM (HDD-B), will it backup content from HDD-A as well as the OS?
    Q2: Are there any special settings in TM necessary to accomplish this?
    Q3: Separate TM question: Anyway to get TM to backup an External HDD that's connected to an AEBS?
    Thanks much in advance!

    I am in the same situation, riesar. I have 2 time-machine-enabled macs connected to a 500GB Time Capsule. My Mac Pro has 4 drives (boot, bootClone, Video Archive, Video Archive Clone) I use Time Machine to backup my Main boot drive, with a couple of exclusions including all other HD's. I excluded my Parallels folder since Each windows installation is about 10GB and the ENTIRE file changes each time you open your virtual PC. I also exclude my parallels installation from my iMac Time Machine file as well.
    Every couple of days, My Boot drive clones itself (using SuperDuper!) to the BootClone and the Video Drive clones itself to the Video Clone. I don't have incremental backups of my video (or Windows installation) but I save SIGNIFICANT space by excluding certain things from time machine. My iMac clones itself to an external firewire drive as well.
    If you were REALLY cramped for space on the Time Machine volume, you could simply include only - say - the User folder. You'd sacrifice the ability to restore your system to a previous state, but you'd have incremental backups of all your regularly changing data files. Your clone could restore your system, but if you ever had to restore your system, your recovery is only as good as you last clone. YMMV.

  • My LaCie external hard drive connected to Time Machine for data backup drops it's connection and a error message displays tell me that I did not properly disconnect the device.  This started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7.

    My La Cie external hard drive drops it's connection after mounting on my iMac computer.  This problem seems to have started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7.  When I turn on my computer and than turn on the external hard drive the hard drive mounts to my disk top without any problem, but when I bring up Mail or Safari the hard drive drops its connection.  Is there a fix for this problem?  Hope someone can help.

    The connection to 10.6.7 may just be a coincidence.  I had a similar problem with a disk and was about to throw it out but decided to try a different USB cable.  That fixed the problem and the drive is still in use.
    Try a new cable if you have not already done so.

  • Wifi dropping and slow when external USB hdd connected

    Hi,
    I have a problem with Wifi connection in my Macbook Air 2014 running Yosemie 10.10.1. I have USB hub, which is plugged to power and I have connected external sound card, Apple keyboard and my external HDD (I used it as Time Machine) to it. Sometimes my Wifi starts dropping and internet is extremely slow, but when i unplugged external HDD, everything seems to be fine. I've tried 3 USB hubs, but still the same problem.
    Does anyone have similar problem?
    Thanks for any advice.

    go into system prefs -> startup disk and select the disk with os x on it. that should solve the problem
