TGA (Targa) Quicktime compression suddenly missing

This morning I allowed my system to update automatically and restart. Now I can't choose "TGA" (Targa) compression when exporting a quicktime movie from FCP. I can still export a TGA file sequence, but there are no options for setting image size. What happened, and how can I fix it? This is urgent.

Answering my own question here: I called Apple Care and discovered the problem was an update to Quicktime Pro that relegated both TGA and TIFF (another format commonly used in cinema) to "legacy" status. To correct this, I was instructed to open Quicktime settings in System Preferences, and under the "advanced" tab check "enable legacy codecs." Then I re-started the computer. Lo and behold, TGA and TIFF are back!
I did inform the very helpful and competent phone person that TGA and TIFF remain very much in use in the 35mm film world. Many 35mm laser film recorders use TGA, and Digital Cinema Package - the very latest high-def technology for theatrical releases - uses TIFF. So hopefully they'll move those codecs back from "legacy" to "current" status.

  • Exporting to mpeg2 using Quicktime compression - render problems

Using FCP Studio 5.1 to export to DVD, FCP keeps asking for file to be rendered even after we have rendered complete movie. There are no green or red bars, so why does FCP not accept this as a full render?
We are exporting using mpeg2 Quicktime compression, not Compressor 2.
    Is there a work-round?

  • Top line suddenly missing from display - where did it go?  how can I get it back?  Don't have finder, time and date, options...

Top line is suddenly missing:  no finder, no options, no date and time or wifi status, no time capsule to return to previous settings!  Can't figure out what happened.

You can only sync with one computer. When you synced to the new computer it would have erased it and synced what was on the new computer.
You always need to have a backup, an iPhone is not a storage device.
When you get a new computer you need to transfer your library before syncing
If you don't have a backup you may be out of luck
The only thing would be if you're in the US and have access to the iCloud beta to reload purchases

  • Contacts entered on iPhone 4s suddenly missing, present on iCloud - how to recover?

Wife's iPhone 4s has out-of-date Yahoo contacts, but is suddenly missing all of the contact information she has entered on the iPhone itself.
iCloud sync is currently disabled - apparently by default when upgraded to iOS 7? - but when we login to iCloud, most or all of the contacts she entered are available.  (Latest sync w iCloud may be a couple of months ago; latest sync with iTunes on Macbook Pro was over 2 years ago, so no joy there.)
How to safely recover contacts from iCloud back to iPhone, without resetting iPhone?
    Concerns:
    (1) Clearly if we reset the iPhone, it would restore from iCloud - but would also lose text conversations, at least the ones that happened since the last sync.
    (2) If we simply re-enable iCloud sync, will missing contacts be copied from iCloud to phone?  or will they instead be deleted from iCloud, because they were seemingly "removed" from phone after latest sync?
    (3) Do we need to delete all contacts from phone, then enable iCloud sync?  But see concern #2! - and also, will deleting Yahoo contacts from phone delete them from Yahoo too?
Any advice or procedural pointers greatly appreciated - thanks!

First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • The Camera app is suddenly missing from my iPhone, how do I get it back?

My camera app is suddenly missing from my phone.. how do I get it back or find it? it's not in any 'folders' -- Same with my Safari app--  Not sure if my 2 yr old deleted it? I didn't think those were deletable apps.

Default apps are part of the iOS and cannot be deleted.  Search all home screens and all folders and/or search for it with Spotlight, that will tell you what folder it's in.
Also check Settings > General > Restrictions to see if it has been restricted.
If not found, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.

  • Convert to .flv in Quicktime Pro - Option missing?

    Hello,
I need to convert my .mov files from FCP X to .flv (on my Mac 10.7.5).  I bought QuickTime 7 Pro for this, because I saw with my own eyes the flv export option, with choices of different video dimensions, on a friend's Mac. But in my QT Pro, this option is missing. He says he didn't add any components to get this.
Does anyone understand this, and know how I can get the FLV option? Is there a simple component to add? (I can not buy the whole Adobe package.)
Alternatively, any other suggestions of cheap/free, trustworthy video converters would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you!

I may very well be the case, as I don't recall that option when I was using MX 2004.  I can say that 12 handles video and video controllers beautifully.  If they have a demo of it, you may want to download it and give it a try for this feature alone.  It may only be a temporary fix, but you'll be pleased with the results.
When I used MX 04, I tended to use FFMPEGX to convert MOV files to FLV, but half the time I came up with those zero kb files like you.  Pre Flash 10, I found that if something wasn't exactly right, FFMPEGX would not do the trick.  The "export to FLV" option in Quicktime 7 Pro that comes with Flash 8 is really robust and has not once produced ill results, plus, it's remarkably fast.
I use FLV Converter for Mac at work... I dont' know how much it costs but it's ridiculously easy to use and the compression is fantastic.

  • Why is my album artwork suddenly missing?

I appologize that this has been asked before but I am so confused as to why there don't seem to be any answers on here that reliably solve the problem. Is iphone technology really that complicated and mysterious? I feel like it's about to become self aware or something.
Anyway, my album art on my iphone 4s seems to have suddenly gone missing. But not in a predictable way. It seemed like it started when I had to unplug my phone during a recent sync. I have been reimporting my albums and I was syncing the latest batch to the phone and underestimated how much time it would take. Or possibly it was hung up on one of the steps. Honestly I'm not totally sure. But I noticed the albums I had just recently modified still had art but a lot of the rest was gone. To clarify, however, at that time some of the album art was totally missing and some was only missing in the album view. When I clicked on the albums or played them the art would be there.
I discovered that deleting the albums one (or several) at a time and resyncing seemed to bring them back but then my usb cable got bumped and the sync interrupted and it started all over. So I finally just manually deleted all the music and resynced. Which took about 22 hours. But not all of the art was back that time.
I have since tried hard resetting, converting the id3 tags to that higher number that is suggested and resyncing, restoring to an earlier date before this started happening. To no avail.
I have over 7000 songs all with meticulously picked out album art. Some is from itunes and the stuff that was wrong or didn't have any I got from the web. I realize it's a not so important problem but it's really not just about OCD. It's easier for me to pick out what I want to listen to when I see the artwork.
Frankly, I wish the recently added and the purchased playist would arrange by album so I could look at the covers. But that's a separate issue.
Anyway, currently I have maybe 10% of my art showing and what's not there is completely gone rather than just the thumbnail missing. Some of it is from albums I downloaded and some I found on google. And it seems everytime I do something new, different art is missing.
It's just so bizarre and random.
I would really like to figure out why this is happening. Is there no high upper big cheese who might know? I'm pretty certain the apple store would be of no help to me, as they have yet to solve a single technical problem I've come in with in the past.
I've briefly considered itunes match due to the fact that my collection is now even larger in volume since I reimported the whole CD collection (I had a lot of corrupted, skipping songs) which were mostly in 128 from the original import long ago, and it no longer would all fit on the phone. I have been converting to the 192 bit rate to sync but I believe that is why it takes so long. When I synced some selected playlists without converting it took about 12 times less time than it would have if I had converted.
Anyway I'm just a little put off by the thought of paying to listen to my own music (AGAIN - I already bought the phone for that privelege and the songs themselves) which I might not have access to at all times (subject to cell/wireless service), possibly having to download those songs to the phone before listening (???), and that my album art, from what I've read, would likely still not be correct. If anyone has any better information I'm interested to hear it.
Or some ideas of how to maintain access to all my well organized music despite the size. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that one day apple santa will bring us a 128gb phone which will solve one of my problems at least. For now I'd just like the art back the way it was a couple weeks ago.

Try unchecking "display album artwork" in the music preferences section when your iPod is connected and click "apply". Then sync your iPod.
Then check "display album artwork" in the music preferences section when youd iPod is connected and click "apply". Then sync your iPod again.
This should resync the album artwork to the iPod.
If this does not work, you might need to restore the iPod and reload the songs in order to correct this error.

  • Quicktime plug-in missing in Safari, works fine in Firefox

Lion is working fine on my 2008 iMac - except - I can't play QuickTime movies. It tells me there is a plug-in missing.  This only happens with Safari. When I view the same site in Firefox, the QuickTime files play fine.
    What's going on here?

I found this answer on another thread, which may help - it fixed it for me:
Fixed the problem by going into Safari preferences, Extensions, and turned off the extensions for DivX... a temp fix, but will do for now!

  • Large block of photos suddenly missing?

Greetings to all those who are undoubtably more elements 7 savvy than I am. Without my opening, moving, renaming or otherwise molesting them, 2/3s of the photos in one of my two catalogs have suddenly gone missing. I have exhausted all the trouble shooting info I can find online and have tried the reconnecting procedures, optimized the catalog, repaired the catalog, rebuilt the thumbnails and uninstalled and reinstalled elements 7 all to no avail. The missing files, a mix of jpeg and nef totaling 272, are grouped in one block starting from the first photos I ever downloaded two years ago except for one which is a recent download. Elements 7 win xp 1G ram. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Could registry problems in xp cause this?

I would sure like to know how I did this without even having that catalog open so I don't do it again because I don't even know to move files intentionally much less accidentally.
You didn't do this with the catalog open. You, or someone else using your computer, or those space aliens that beamed into your house a few days ago, or your cat or dog, moved or renamed or deleted the photos, probably accidentally, using Windows xp.
What I meant was I have no idea how to find lost files or how to move them and would have to go to sites explaining how to do that.
If you don't know how to do that, then here's the basic idea. In PSE, find the name of one of the missing files. Lets say it is DSC_0432.jpg
Then, in Windows XP, double-click on My Computer and enter DSC_0432.jpg into the search bar, press ENTER, and it will search for it.
This will work if the photos were accidentally moved. If the photos were accidentally renamed or deleted, then this will not work.
Nevertheless, give it a try and report back. If the photo is found, make a note of the exact folder that it resides in right now and let us know.

  • Quicktime Importer Component Missing

    Hello,
I think that this is posted on the correct forum but if not I apologise.
I am having a problem running games (namely 'The Sims 2' and 'Nanosaur 2') and I think it's something to do with Quicktime.
I have tried reinstalling OS X, updating all the software I can, installing the latest patch for The Sims 2, reinstalling The Sims 2 on numerours occasions in different places, reinstalling the latest Quicktime, creating a new user and trying from there, installing OS 9 Classic, installing Quicktime 4 and 5 under Classic mode and installing CarbonLib 1.2 and 1.3 (though I couldn't install either CarbonLib because it said I didn't need them). Nothing seems to work.
When attempting to open Nanosaur 2, after OKing the graphics detail selector window the screen briefly goes to black then comes back to the desktop with the message-
"DrawPictureIntoGWorld: GetGraphicsImporterForFile failed! One of Quicktime's importer components is missing. You should install OS X to fix this."
Then when I click OK, it briefly goes to black and it gives me this message-
    "SetMetaObjectToPicture: DrawPictureIntoGWorld failed!"
The Sims 2 displays the 'EA Games' logo, doesn't display the 'Maxis' logo (instead displays a small red X in the top left of the screen), shows the 'aspyr' logo and the start up video then dumps me back onto the desktop (briefly at a low resolution (maybe 640x480) then clicking back into my normal 1440x900). It then just brings up a 'This application quit unexpectedly' message.
I believe these 2 errors to be related so maybe a problem with Quicktime rendering or something (I know nothing about these types of things).
Is there anywhere to get individual Quicktime importer components or any way to fix this problem. Everything else seems to work fine.
    Simon.

I think the designers page may hold better answers to your troubles.
First trouble is that most of these games can only be played from the "device" (CD/DVD) and also include their own QuickTime playback "engine".
So. Your installed version of QuickTime may not be the one used for playback.

  • Quicktime file info missing in Finder column view???

In the Finder column view my PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.3.9 shows all QuickTime audio and video file info along with the playable thumbnail video or music bar, including duration/running time and (for movies) dimension/aspect ratio in pixels.
However, on my much newer iBook G4 from 2 years ago running OS X 10.4.10, those two helpful stats are missing. From what I've been told this helpful file date and aspect ratio data is indeed possible with 10.4 Tiger as it is in Panther but I can't see how to show them via either View preferences, QuickTime prefs, Apple's document files or even these message boards. If anyone could please help me I'd really appreciate it, thanks!!!

    Oh, sorry.
No, I am running Quicktime 7.2 on both computers. I always install the latest updates when Software Update informs me of one and Quicktime doesn't use different versions for Panther & Tiger as far as I know.
This has been this way for a long time and the only difference at any time in the past has been 10.3.x vs 10.4.x. I sort of accepted it was something not available in Tiger's Finder column view (since I don't remember doing anything specific in Panther to show that extra info) but then after someone pointed out to me that that should be something one can adjust (and after using common sense) I realized Tiger wouldn't disable or take away info provided in the earlier versions, in a sense downgrading something users may rely on.
I don't think I asked: are you (or anyone reading this) showing the duration and dimensions of Quicktime audio and movie files in Finder column view under Tiger? ...or under Panther? Again, I'm referring to those that can be played directly in the preview in column view. Thanks.
