Thank you Apple

Say what you want about Apple, about the slight over-pricing of some of their products, about their policy of secrets, about their not always perfect record on reliability, but I just LOVE their customer service and it doesn't surprise me they always score very high in that regard.
Long story short, my beloved PB G4 was getting close to his 3-year warranty (in May) and after completing a paper for my research, I thought it was time to clean everything up and upgrade to Leopard and see if there was any issue. Not that I hadn't issues before with it Faulty logic board and battery recall did alter its original entrails but everytime it was well handled by Apple. For the last year or so however, I had more and more white stains on my screen, and judging by some of the threads over here, I wasn't sure that would fall under the warranty or not. I was decided that I would try my luck one of these days at the Apple Store, but I didn't know yet it would happen so soon...
So anyway, back to my Tiger cleanup, moving most of the media to my iMac, removing many unneeded apps, I went down to only 20GB on the drive with all my essentials research stuff.I usually back up my critical files using .Mac (thesis, papers,...) and before moving to Leopard, I wanted a clean bootable backup using SuperDuper and a couple of DVDs for the rest of my data... Well, can't say it went according to the plan ! 3/4 of the way through the SuperDuper backup, my PB hanged and I started to hear an awful clicking noise from my HD... A reboot attempt was unsuccessful and I started to accept the fact that I just lost my work drive... Scrambling through the partial SuperDuper backup and my previous backups, I made sure I more or less got everything essential. This was late Monday night, around 2an. Setup an appointment at the Genius bar on Tuesday morning, got some sleep and here I am at the Apple Store, with the helpful Genius booting from the network and making sure my drive is real dead. I briefly considered the 3rd party recovery option but I was pretty confident I had everything I needed scattered among my various backups. I did take the opportunity to mention my LCD screen issues, but the Genius was not so sure they would fix it. By 11am Tuesday, I had said goodbye to my PB, and I was not holding my breath of having it back for the week-end which was quite unfortunate as I was, for once, travelling across the country... What a good surprise at 2pm today to receive a phone call from the Apple Store, telling me my PB was ready for pickup 50 hours only after dropping it there.
Of course, I rushed there, signed the form, got my PB back and was anxious on the ride home to see if my screen had been replaced. By now, you probably have seen it coming, so yes not only do I have a new hard drive, but I also have a bigger hard drive (120GB against 80GB previously, I guess they just don't make 80GB drives anymore ) and a brand new LCD screen! Everything delivered in 50 hours, I'm quite impressed !
Going now for a clean Leopard install with case-sensitive formatted drive (I do a lot of Unix stuff and will not use this machine to do any Adobe stuff so I should be safe right?), I think my beloved PB will be rejuvenated !
Thanks for your time !

Hi Matthieu
Good news that it's all working so far. I've only had the PB a few days - just playing with it - my new toy . Next week I will be erasing the hard drive and starting fresh with Leopard.
I'm moving from my trusty old G3 Wallstreet Powerbook - 10 years old. A dramatic difference between the two.
I've been looking for a while for my specific G4 Powerbook - the very last model with hi-Res display and dual layer burning. I bought it off eBay here for AU $999 - that's about US $930. That price included a retail copy of Leopard.
Yours seems to be an earlier model.
I should point out that for my daily work (video editing, graphics, etc) I will still be mainly using my 8 year old G4 desktop.
Regards. Robert.

• Disappearing Songs on iPod - Thank you Apple!

4000 songs gone, about 1 months of work ripping my CD Lib lost. Thank you Apple Engineers!
Background:
When I Rip a CD, I store temporaly the files on my PC HD, then I update the iTune Music List, then I synchronize the iPod. Afterward, I delete the file from my PC but keep the song names in the iTune libray list. They are flagged with an error "cannot locate the original file", but it has never been a problem, and so it is specified in the help on line.
iTune 5.0.1 Upgrade:
When I upgraded to 5.0.1, all the files on the Ipod with a file name in iTune Library that cannot be located on the PC HD, disappeared from the iPOD. I still have a 4000 songs list in iTune but no more files in the iPod. That is marvelous!
------

I concur that you have identified a serious design flaw in the iPod / iTunes interface.
I encountered a similar disaster when I moved to a new machine (windows). I installed iTunes, connected my fully loaded ipod with all my songs, ratings, playlists, etc. and proceeded to connect to the iPod. I didn't notice the small print in the connection dialog box that comes up to tell you that the libary in iTunes did not match that in the iPod, clicked yes and the system overwrote all of my iPod information with 'nothing'. Several months of organizing and rating songs were lost.
Now, several months later, I have yet another disaster in the making. I have two profiles on my Windows machine (thanks to my local IT system afministrator), with 'My iTunes' library files created in both. For god knows what reason, both these files have been corrupted (e.g. lost my playlists, ratings, links to song folders and neither matches the configuration on my iPod!!!
The system has no ability to upload the config and song information from my iPod to iTunes, and all iTunes does is threaten to over-write the iPod. This will once again wipe out all of my information.
It seems to me that the Engineers at Apple need to change the linkage between iPod and iTunes giving the end-user more control to upload or download info from an iPod and to Merge the songs, lists, etc.

• ITunes 7.1 - Thank you Apple, but...

iTunes 7.1 - Thank you Apple, but...
...it doesn't fix my problem with Vista
Here's the details, and the log from iTunes iPod diagnostics. My laptop previously had XP Pro SP2 and I upgraded (not clean install) to Vista Ultimate.
I uninstalled iTunes 7.0.2, rebooted, downloaded iTunes 7.1 and installed it.
My Symptom:
When I connect my iPod, iTunes freezes, Windows explorer stops responding, and the iPod does not show up as a
device with removable storage. It does appear in Device Manager as a USB Mass Storage Device, though the device
appears to reset itself apporximately once a minute.
Following is the diagnostic log. Here, with timestamps to coordinate with the log, are the steps of what I did over
the duration of the log.
17:38:56 - Stopped then started the iPodService (to reset the diagnostic logs from previous attempts).
Started a windows explorer, looking at "Computer" to watch for the removable device storage to appear.
Started a device manager, looking at USB devices to watch for the iPod USB Mass Storage device to appear.
Started iTunes 7.1, to watch for iPod to be recognized.
17:40:45 - plugged in iPod - USB Mass Storage Device appears in device manager.
Within a few seconds iTunes was frozen - no screen refreshes, no reponse to mouse. Also, Windows Explorer shows as
"Not Responding" and does not refresh or respond to mouse or keyboard.
At this point I waited approx 5 minute, and visible symptoms did not change - iTunes and Windows explorer still
frozen.
Periodically, the device manage screen refreshes as if a device were disconnected or connected. This appears to
corespond with the [DevNodesChanged] log messages starting at 17:41:51, 17:41:57, 17:42:57, 17:43:03, 17:44:04,
17:44:10, 17:45:10, and 17:45:16.
At 17:45:40 I unplugged the iPod. (Previous tests waiting up to 20 minute showed me this was the only way to
unfreeze iTunes and Win Explorer).
Watching carefully at this point I observed:
Windows explorer refreshed and Drive E: appeared briefly then went away;
iTunes refreshed it's screen, and would now respond;
The USB Mass Storage Device in device manager went away.
Given that I unplugged the iPod at this point, I think we can safely ignore log messages after 17:45:40.
The one message that stands out for me is:
[SERVICE: 0x16C4,17:40:50 ERROR] Did not find first letter of stage
While this shows as an error, I see no evidence of any sort of error recovery taking place.
To verify that my USB devices are working, I first plugged in a USB mouse which was recognized properly and worked
fine. I then tried a USB thumb drive which appeared correctly as a USB Mass Storage device and worked perfectly. I
tried the iPod on two other USB ports with virtually identical results, so I'm certain the hardware and the default
USB device drivers are fine.
Here's the log from the experiment:

The iPod updater logging file cannot be found.
While I'm obviously frustrated that 7.1 did not resolve my issue, I'll try hard to keep that frustration at bay and
will make myself available to help diagnose and correct this problem. Contact me directly via email if I can be of
assistance to Apple and Microsoft on getting this working.

Well, I found a workaround for my issue. It's described in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
By disabling the "Sandard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" in device manager, my iPod was correctly recognized and I was able to sync with iTunes. That's the good news.
The bad news is that: a) Windows warns me that my "device can operate faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port" - and the sync with iTunes runs slowly; b) if I reanable that USB device (as suggested in the Apple article, my iPod is no longer recognized.
For now, I'll just disable this device when I need to sync, then reenable it when done. But this is going to be a pain. I really don't consider this a fix. It's really annoying that the iPod is the only USB device that requires this kind of nonsense.
Looking forward to a "real" fix for this some time soon.

• SDK 3.0 now free! Thank you Apple!

Thank you apple for ceasing to charge 99 dollars to us plebes in order to access technical documentation and developer's tools for our ipods and iphones. It is much appreciated. I will need this forum less now that I can rely on authoratative documentation again..
And as I learn more, I might even shell out the big bucks for the spiffy wwdc iphone videos you just mailed me about. But before I do that, I intend to wade through the FREE CLASS on iphone development from Stamford available on Itunes U and taught by apple engineers. Thank you for that too.
It is these occasional delights which keep me a loyal apple customer. All of us techies can build a machine on the cheap for ourselves but we don't because we love your stuff.

bob,
thank you for confirming what i said. i feel a bit less loopey after julian corrected my letter of gratitude.
as far as the nda goes, i think almost everybody at devcon has signed an nda anyway to use a preview of something even if it is safari. Yes, I take it seriously, btw. Not sure how it related to the issue of charging a hundred bucks to look at documentation. It sure put a lot of guesswork into upgrading the os because outsiders couldn't know what they were getting or how well it might work for weeks after the introduction.
For instance I did not know that the os natively handles files from .numbers and .rtf-- there are tons of stuff I can transfer into the ipod as spreadsheets without buying 5 dollar apps to track my gas mileage,eg. And I will stop printing my nisus writer documents as pdfs to read in the ipod touch.

• A Cool iPhone Story Thank You Apple.

All Apple:
We have a great story about a iPhone used by our one of our online instructors (tech savy mom with two kids) using her iphone to respond to online questions, check homework, and to manage students WHILE walking the kids in the stroller, cooking, or nursing!
The cool thing is that it enables her to manage her life and kids easily. The iPhone has improved her quality of communication and enables her to adjust her on-demand priorities including work.
We are an international non-profit educating the world about renewable energy and green living.
Dynamite testimony to great work. Thank you Apple.

Bee , you are so right that most people only post when things go wrong not right.  Which made me think about the Apple Store in Charleston, SC.  I have never had a bad experience and besides buying my iMac there (which was a really good experience as it took us several trips to decide and they were really helpful) I have had a number of 1:1's and I think one trip to the genius bar which resulted in a new mouse.  Everyone I have dealt with there has been respectful and helpful.  At least with those visits you do get a chance to provide feedback.
Nice to post these kinds of comments now and then too.

First we aren't Apple just normal users just like you.
Second provide Apple a feedback or send them a mail.
Third they will never send you a free iPad Air.
If you want one you have to buy it. (go for refurbished if the device is too expensive) or look for special prices.
Contact iTunes support if you have a problem with an App.

• IOS6 - "thank you", Apple

I own the iPhone 4s and was quite happy with it, using the 5.1 or whatever iOS version. After the release of iOS6 I was curious, so I upgraded to 6.0.
+ DID NOT notice ANY usefull
- wifi problems (often doesn't connect to my own wifi, never had such problems before with iPhone)
- battery discharges VERY quickly
- Safari freezing often when connected via 3G (never before)
- Useless maps
- Missing the old built-in youtube client, new youtube app can do nothing
- Passbook has no use in Czech republic (don't miss this option though)
- much worse enviroment of AppStore and iTunes
Simple question to Apple or anyone who can help - How to downgrade back to iOS5.something? I don't want to wait until Apple fixes their stupid mistakes (why don't they try if new system works fine before releasing it?), I want to USE my phone, now I have phone mostly without wifi or 3G, discharging quickly etc. etc., this way I could easily have some old phone, which i'd use just for calling and messaging.
Thank you very much in advance for any help!

I am not saying anyone forced me, I am trying to find a solution. I could survive the enviroment (ok, let's say it would be just ME who it bothers), but wifi, battery, maps? That must bother everyone, right? I am not some crazy person who just LOVES apple and everything they do, I like their products, but how can I be happy with suddenly terrible battery and wifi and safari crashing? Is there some way to contact apple directly?

• Thank you Apple!!!  RAM-üroblem in older PB

hy,
i wanted to give my pb a christmaspresent, 2 gb ram! now there is just 1 gb insind (1x 1gb).
but i realized that i own a pb, that has the known ram-slot-problem. there is/was the mainboard-replace-recall.
i got in contact with apple and the said: "no, we are not changing going to fix the problem for free". the reasons: the warranty is finished (?) since 1,5 years and the serialnumber is to old, the number does not belong to the definded numbers of recall-project.
great, apple! thank you. can you tell me how i should find a problem like this during the warranty-time, if i dont want to buy a second ram-module? the number is correct you say, but the symptoms are the same like with the pbs with the correct number... hey, i dont trust you, if you say there are no significant other ram-problems is this building-series.
sorry, but this is bad, too bad, apple! grrrrrrrrrrrr....

• Thank you Apple for the worst update ever! This is what I lost last night..

I lost my messages! I lost my wireless passwords! I lost all the progress in every game I had! I lost email accounts that I had to reconfigure! I lost my mind!
What I gained? A slower iPhone that can arrange folders...
I want my things back but I guess... well you know... I guess I don't deserve it. I'm just a client to make proffit. No one in Apple will ever read this.

I personally think that's a crappy response and poor assumption. Doesn't the old saying go, make an ASSumption, make an ASSoutofyourself?
I'm in the same case as the OP. I back up regularly. I keep iTunes updated. I keep Windows updated. And I did "everything right" as was instructed by Apple. Plug in. Sync. Click Update. And that's where all **** broke loose.
My download of os4 went fine. It was the update that totally wiped my data, leaving me with only ONE of my updates (from Sept 09) in tact, but still unusable, as it throws the iPhone into a continual syncing loop. It hung up on the "backup" process, and if you look through these forums, this certainly isn't an uncommon problem, and more importantly, not a FIXED problem. After about 4-5 hours of waiting for my phone to backup, I finally thought maybe it truely WAS hung up, so I tried to cancel the backup process, and since I had backed up prior to downloading, I figured it would be okay. And if that failed, I figured it wouldn't be a big deal to rollback to my last most recent backup from about a week ago. But no. I tried to backup and I got stuck in the never-ending backup loop. And then finally after Restoring and Rebooting about a dozen times, I am finally left with the realization that I have a "working" iPhone with iOS4, but absolutely NO data and NO settings. The games were the least of my concerns. I had business apps on there that I use for my freelance business. The settings of the many apps I had on there will take me DAYS to reconfigure, and that's if I remember everything easily.
Thanks Apple.

• Upgrade to 10.6.6 ruins DVD drive - THANK YOU, APPLE!!!!!

Funny, since the upgrade from 10.6.5. to 10.6.6. I too have problems with a formerly more or less perfect system.
I cannot read or write CD-RWs anymore and I've just discovered a data DVD which the MacMini will not read.
This was NOT the case before the upgrade and it is not a problem with the CD's or DVD's as they can be read via an external (firewire) drive.
What the **** have you done, Apple, to screw up my computer hardware through a software update?! Huh!?!?!?! FIX IT!! Or tell me how I can get back to 10.6.5 and I swear I will never ever touch the "Software Update" button. I'm done with that. Jesus, maybe I should switch back to Windows.
(Really, I'm done with System upgrades. From now on, if the system runs well, no updates anymore. Not even if it's an "important security upgrade". Screw it. I'm speechless.

This is both a rant and a 4x duplicated post, both of which are a violation of the [terms of use of these forums|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#terms]. It's very likely it will be removed.
If you read this before then, note that these two events (the update and the failure of your drive) are not related. This is not a known issue, and for that matter, only a firmware update can ruin hardware... a software update cannot ruin your hardware.
Calm yourself down, and once you can behave civilly again, call Apple for service on the drive.

• Thank You Apple Community

• Firmware 1.5 - THANK YOU APPLE ! No more flickering blue colors in Windows

Hey,
the new firmware 1.5 FIXED the issue of the flickering blue colors in Boot Camp using Windows (problem with MPB and ATI Radeon X1600) !
Everything works, even wake up from sleep under WinXP!
Tkx to Apple sw engineers!
Chris

Well ... I still have a problem previously posted that has not yet been resolved. I would appreciate any suggestions on courses of action:
I own an ATI-based MBP 17" and every day I was getting this software update app pop-up telling me that there is a "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.4" to install. So, like a good Apple customer, I tried ... following instructions to the letter. It would download and appear to install, then get to the point of wanting me to shutdown:
+"1. Quit all other open applications.+
+2. Click Shut Down in the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to shut down.+
+3. Press and hold the power button on your MacBook Pro until the sleep indicator light flashes repeatedly or you hear a long tone, then release the power button.+
+A status bar indicates the progress of the update+
+Important: Do not interrupt the update.+
+Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update.+
+4. Click OK, if the firmware is now up-to-date.+
+If these instructions appear on your screen again, the firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4."+
Before 1.5 was released, I'd click shutdown and get this error every single time: "An unexpected error occurred (0). Your firmware cannot be updated. See www.apple.com/support for more information."
So ... I did visit "www.apple.com/support". The first thing I did was search for any information on the specific error I was receiving. I found article 303364 via the EFI Firmware update 1.4 link on the troubleshooting section of the support site. This told me Intel-based Mac hard disks must be formatted with the GUID partition scheme to apply firmware updates. My scheme was the GUID partition.
No help here, so before making an excuse to head in to the local Genius Bar, I asked a friend who's been a Mac geek longer than I about it. He said that MAYBE the issue would resolve if I flashed the EFI firmware with previous updates first, then 1.4 would take. Dubious, I decided to investigate further and come here to the forums. I'm very glad I did.
I read that 1.4 had corrupted some video adaptors, I became dubious about the entire need to flash to 1.4 and sought some guidance here on how to proceed. The general consensus was to wait until EFI update 1.5 was released.
So ... now 1.5 is out and I got the daily software update notification that both 1.4 and 1.5 were available. Hoping the issue that was preventing me from updating the firmware to 1.4 had been resolved, I did not select 1.4 ... opting instead to update to 1.5. I went through the exact same process as advised above for 1.4 but got a brand new error:
"An unexpected error occurred (28:3). Your firmware can not be updated."
It wouldn't bug me a bit NOT upgrading my firmware if the damned software updater would stop reminding me every day to upgrade ... again ... when I can't. So ... what next? Genious Bar? Apple support? I have no doubt 1.5 fixes display corruption, but if I can't install it, what am I to do?
Cheers!
Kevin

• ITunes v7.0.2 Released - THANK YOU APPLE ~ Sincerely

I've installed and tested it. It's fantastic!!
This is the version they should have released initially.
Download Page:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
I always had faith in them.
Enjoy.

So what I want to hear about is whether someone who just updated to 7.0.2 is totally fixed and happy after:
1. Having a working (original) 5th generation iPod with iTunes 6.x
2. Then updated to iTunes 7 or 7.0.1 AND also did the update to the latest iPod firmware
3. Then was finding all sorts of new problems never before experienced.
If items 1 to 3 applied to you and 7.0.2 fixed this for you (i.e. you have the latest iPod firmware installed and previously introduced problems have now gone away) than this is the good news I have been waiting for, before daring to update my daughters iPod firmware. (I am a Mac guy but she uses her iPod with Windows XP and iTunes in that environment so I have been worried about proceeding.
