I just got this iMac from a friend, and I have never in my life owned one, or ever used one. I know it has OS9, and the girl who has it before has the interent connection set up as dial up.. but I have cable. I hook everything up the way it goes but I can't get it to recognize my high speed internet. It keeps bringing up the dial up settings. How do I get it to delete the dial up stuff and run my cable internet?
I dont know.   Mac OS 9.0.x

    I am sure it has been done many times over within the JDeveloper community discussion but I felt compelled
    to stop, think and acknowledge the efforts here.
    To Oracle, Sun and others that have contributed to this software and resources a huge THANK YOU!
    I started in this business as a COBOL programmer on the mainframe where the only option for you to learn
    was to use a school or company mainframe to code. if you didn't have either your only
    option was reviewing code in textbooks.
    These tools are amazing for how much power they give those of us interested in furthering our skills but
    limited in financial resources. The effort is staggering to me. Just lookng at the release notes and bug
    fixes for the versions of this tool I am absolutely floored.
    Your efforts are greatly appreciated. I hope that the open source concept continues. I applaud and urge
    you to continue your efforts. You are all doing a wonderful thing really. In a time where the trend is to
    charge charge charge for anything we do on our Droids and Iphones it is good to see a humane effort
    flourish.

    You may think you are connected to the internet, but maybe not. Click on Safari and see if it connects.

    Additional things to try.
    Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

    In under an hour, I had a working Arch system up and running, along side of my main Kubuntu and windows installations.  I consider my linux skills to be very novice, and I did this with no problems and I understood the entire processs.  I want to formally thank you all for the guides and information herer that have helped me do this flawlessly.  Now comes the fun part of configuring and building my system!  One more Kubuntu user on the way out!

  • A heartfelt thank you to Renee and Terry

    My woes began in December, when I first switched to Verizon Fios. My phone number was not ported correctly, so instead of getting a Triple Play rate, I got a Double Play together with an extremely expensive land line rate. After the shock of the first month's bill in January, I called Verizon and spoke to multiple representatives - at least 20 - over the course of the next month, to have my package fixed so that I can get the Triple Play I signed up for. Some were nice and ineffective, some nasty and ineffective. They all said I couldn't get Triple Play because my phone number was not ported over to Verizon. Meanwhile, I am getting billed for this same number that was "not ported over"!!  
    In February, due to some good karma, I got Renee, from the Suffolk County Office. We were on the phone for almost two hours as she tried different ways to get the system to accept the correct information. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the different parts of Verizon's internal systems, very helpful and sympathetic. I think this was probably the first time I encountered true empathy from a staff member and it really made me feel like a person, rather than an annoying buzzing insect. Renee worked on my problem over the course of at least a week, as she had to get another tech department to work with her. Miraculously, she got it fixed, and I was able to get my correct plan rate! Renee deserves a Medal for heroic effort and has my heartfelt thanks!
    Of course, fixing the plan doesn't mean they fixed the payments retroactively. I had been paying the non-plan land line rate, and I felt I deserved adjustments for incorrect billing, so refused to pay the bill of $397 for long distance calls (2 months' worth). After speaking (again) to various reps from billing which did zippo, it was sent to a collection agency (of course). Today, (July 1st)  I lucked out again, and happened to talk to Terry in New York and she was actually able to adjust my bill retroactively to give me the discounts I was entitled to. We were on the phone for more than an hour, and it was actually much more pleasant than I had any reason to expect. Thank you so much, Terry!
    My problem took 6 months and many, many persistent phone calls to resolve, and I am sure there are countless numbers of Verizon customers with a horror story. I guess this is primarily a thank you letter to the representatives out there who are doing their jobs well, but it is also a note of encouragement to all you customers out there who are struggling with your services to not give up!! There is a 1 in 25 chance (from my personal statistics of calling a couple times a week over the course of 3 - 4 months!) that you will finally luck out and get the person who can help you.

  • A Big Thank You too Apple, and Advance Electronics.

    This is a thank you first to Apple, for designing such a great laptop, and secondly to the tech's at my local Apple Tech Shop, Advance Electronics, especially Scott.
    About a week ago, an Apple Laptop users worst nightmare happened to me.
    And it was my own fault.
    I split a FULL cup of three cream, three sugar coffee on the top of my MacBook Pro. I won't go into how; I know I am a GIANT IDIOT for ever allowing this to happen, and I literally felt physically ill after doing this.
    So, I spill this Extra Large cup of Tim Horton's finest directly on the keyboard of my MBP. The screen automatically goes blank. It has powered down. I leap into action.
    I flip the MBP upside down, allowing most of the liquid to drain, while yanking the Magsafe (did I mention I love this connector?) and popping the battery.
    Keeping the MBP upside down, I look for a tool small enough to open the RAM door; no luck.
    I call the local tech shop. They have no Mac Techs there on the weekend, but they do have some other talented techs. I have no choice, I need immediate action or my poor MBP is doomed.
    I bring it to the Tech shop. They make no promises, warn me that by having a non-Apple Certified tech work on it, my warranty is void; I am not deterred; spilling coffee on it has already voided the warranty, and I have nothing to lose at this point.
    One week later I have my MBP back. They had to replace the keyboard (can you imagine trying to clean that sucker out?) and the topcase. That's it. everything else is in working order.
    No doubt my own fast action had something to do with this, but without the design and build quality from Apple, and the skill of the first tech to work on my MBP, Scott, I would have a very expensive hunk of scrap right now, instead of my beloved MBP.

    Just want these forums to now be flooded with praise for Apple's decision. It's not $200, but I never expected that. After all, we stood in line knowing that price drops would come, although we never expected such a drastic drop. A $100 gift card is a nice resolution to this situation, and my faith in Apple has been restored. I've already called customer service, of who I was on the line complaining to for most of the day, and filed a 'compliment' to thank Apple for addressing this issue and listening to their loyal fanbase.     Why should you feel robbed?? You made the mistake of not spending a 100 more for twice the storage space! There is nothing wrong your phone, you made the decision at the counter to save yourself some dough and these are the repercussions . I believe that this by far the best pr contol that i've seen in a long time. The only unfortunate incident that i see is that now all you crybabies are going to expect apple to compensate you for every price drop in the future, causing them lose even more money. Why do you feel robbed? Are you going to expect a price difference when apple inevitably updates your laptops (probably the least expensive macbooks at that)?? If you do than you should not be a consumer of any sort.

    I'm sure some of you heard this story before - I left my iPad on the plane.
    Well, that's my story and after a couple weeks trying to track it down, I was sure it was gone for good. I knew the moment I realized I had left my iPad behind that I was screwed - I had iCloud setup, but my iPad was in airplane mode and it was password locked.
    About several more weeks had passed, I get a phone call from Apple support - "Sir, did you lose an iPad?". I couldn't believe it! Basically, a US Airways employee found my iPad, contacted Apple with the serial number, and Apple tracked me down!
    In an age of digital data and digital people, it's not often you come accross a story where it was the hard work of real people doing "analog" stuff to make a happy ending.
    I wanted to share this with the community because that's the least I can do to help promote the great companies that came through for me. And if there are others that made the same mistake as me, I hope you get good news soon!

    No, it does not.  It transfers purchases from the iDevice to the computer.  The computer must be authorized for the Apple ID that the content was acquired with.

  • Data Guard with Oracle 9i and 10g -- have you done it?

    We have an ERP system (JDEdwards, db size approx 600 GB) and we'd like to copy the data in this system to a database on another computer. We'd use the remote database for reporting, so we need it to be available. We are looking at using Data Guard running in Logical Standby mode.
    The ERP database is Oracle 9i, and we are considering having the Logical Standby database be 10g. Have you done this and if so, what was your experience?
    Here's why we want to do this. There are many tables in the ERP database that contain descending indexes. We can't change this, and it is not supported with Data Guard under Oracle 9.2. Tables with descending indexes do not copy to the logical standby database.
    We were told that this is corrected in a newer release of Oracle, and we were wondering if a 10g database would properly copy tables with descending indexes.

    What you are trying to do might not be possible. Because when you create logical standby you have to create a physical standby first and convert it. Primary and standby have to be same version.
    In furture it might be possible because 10G will support rolling upgrade of logical standby.
    However even it's possible you have to go through a lot of pain to setup and maintain it because Oracle don't support the setup.
    What you could try are Stream and Replication, I will say Stream is very interesting one. Because Oracle say : "Oracle Streams and Oracle Data Guard (including Data Guard SQL Apply) are independent features based on some common underlying infrastructure and technology. "
