Thank You SQL Developer Team

I would like to take a minute to say "Thank You" to everyone who are working on SQL Developer. I use SQL Developer regularly to quickly view database objects and table data.
Since the release of APEX 3.0.1 and SQLDeveloper 1.2, I have been using SQL Developer to move my APEX applications between Development, Test, QA, and Production instances - works like a champ! I have the development pages and administrative pages disabled in Test, QA and Prod, so SQL Developer (in my opinion) has helped plug a security risk in my APEX applications.
I know developers - and project managers - don't get to hear much praise for what they do. Seems like it is too easy for users to point out flaws in applications. But, if users find flaws in applications, they must be using it...
Thanks again for everything you do.
Dan

So did I (for about 50K).
At the end I managed to export in Text format, then opened that with Excel.
Hope that works for you,
K.

In the new SQL Developer Team Announcements sticky note posted a couple of days ago:
<li>Is "SQL Developer Team Announcements" the right title? It appears to be hard enough to get people to read these things anyway, and this suggests that it's either targetted at the SQL Developer Team, or contains information about them.
<li>The SQL Developer Exchange link for Enhancement Requests links to the sticky note, not the Exchange Feature Requests page.
<li>Suggest using "Forum Tips" or some other alternative instead of "Forum Etiquette": "etiquette" too obscure a term?
<li>"When asking a question, provide all the details that someone would need to answer it.": Can these be spelled out? e.g. SQL Developer version, DB version, Java version, OS etc.

Sue, thanks for the prompt attention.
3 sounds good: News, Posting Guidelines, and a FAQ for the rest? (sorry, I'd lump "collateral" in with "etiquette" as clarity goes).
    A FAQ with Qs like:
    <li>How do I report bugs?
    <li>Where do I request enhancements?
    <li>Where can I find extensions?
may be the best way to handle the "collateral" as it can retain the same (easily understood title) whilst being extendable to cover virtually anything.
As an example, I think Mark Drake has handled this well on the {forum:id=34} forum.

  • Congrats to the Sql Developer Team! The Migration tool is SUPER

Just wanted to say "thank-you" for such a great tool. Last week, I was fighting a third party software / MS SQL 2000 database. Finally enough was enough, boot up Sql-Dev, migrated everything from MS SQL to oracle...extracted the data....baba boom baba bing..boss is happy!
    Keep up the great work!

I know that the Spatial and Graph folks have an updated extension in the works for SQL Developer, but I can't speak about particular changes or updates. You could cross post to the Spatial forum as well
    Spatial
As per your request for 'shared queries' for your students - I think that's a request independent of our Spatial support, yes?
Could you elaborate a bit on exactly what you'd like to see here?
Our Reports feature has a 'Shared Reports' interface that might get you what you want. There's also Code Templates and Code Snippets as well...

  • Issue with SQL Developer connect to SQL server

I'm using "SQL Developer 2.1.1.64.45" to work on a migration project which needs to convert a SQL server database to a Oracle 11g database. But I got an issue when I setup the SQL server connection. The SQL Developer let me connect by selecting a SQL server database name (For example: Northwind), but once connected, it always connected to "master" database instead. The "SQL Developer" is running on Windows 7 Professional (x64) platform. My Oracle database is 11g, and SQL server database is SQL 2005. And my SQL server instance name is "SQL2005". Anyone have ever experienced this problem? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for the feedback, lets stick with SQL Developer 3.
    Correct me if I'm wrong,
You attempted to migrate from SQL Server to Oracle including target generation and datamove in one go, by filling in each step of the migration wizard to the end.
    During the datamove you got
    ORA-01000:maximum open cursor exceeded
So it looks like SQL Developer during the migration is not closing cursors fast enough and hits the maximum number of open cursors in your Oracle database.
I think the default max open cursors is 300 in Oracle.
There are a few things we can do here.
You should be able to see the new migration project in your Migration Projects navigator.
By navigating down the project tree to "Converted Database Objects" we can attempt the data move again by right clicking and choosing "Data Move".
But first I would restart SQL Developer so as to free up any lingering open cursors.
That may allow you to complete the data move, as the only cursors being open are being used in the data move and not some cursors which may have been left open from previous steps in the migration.
Now from my perspective I would like to identify where are we leaving open the cursors, so I'm going to setup some testcases my end to see if I can replicate.
From your perspective Id presume you just want to move on with the migration.
So if the above (shutdown and attempt just the data move) doesnt workyou could
    A) Increase the MAX OPEN CURSORs on your Oracle databases so it complete the data move
    or
    B) Use the offline data move technique.
    A) Increase MAX OPEN CURSORs
This wiki explains how to do that, looks like 1000 is fairly common, but even a much larger number is not a problem
    http://wiki.oracle.com/page/OPEN_CURSORS
    ALTER SYSTEM SET OPEN_CURSORS = 10000;
    OR
    B) Offline Data Move
If you are moving large amounts of data (say > 1GB), then the standard data move (we call it online), which just uses JDBC to SELECT * FROM and INSERT INTO may not cut the mustard.
In this case you can try using our offline technique. SQL Developer will generate a set of scripts for you.
unload_script.bat will use SQL Servers BCP tool to dump out the table data into DAT files.
oracle_ctl.bat will load the data in the DAT files into Oracle.
As we know the names of all the tables, columns ,both SQL Server and Oracle, we can generate fairly good scripts.
The benefit of this technique is large amounts of data can be migrated and you get to use tools designed to dump data and load in data, so you have better error logging and tweaking.
To attempt this in the Migration Wizard , Data Move page, select offline.
If you can describe your database a bit (number of tables, number of procedures, amount of data to migrate) I may be able to define my testcase better so I can replicate the issue.
    Thanks

  • SQL Developer / JDK On Windows Server 2008 64 bit R2

Does anyone have the recipe to fix the annoying message:  "Cannot find a J2SE installed at path:  C:\Program Files\Java\jre6"?  I get the same message, when trying to set up and run SQL Developer on a Windows 2008 server with SQL Developer 32 bit, Java 1.6 and Java 1.7 32 bit, and now trying with SQL Developer 64-bit with JDK 64 bit.  Thank-you.

SQL Developer requires a JDK, not a JRE.  When you are asked to select the path you need to into "C:\program files\jdk1.6.0_35\bin" (or whatever) rather the the jre6 directory.
If you are using SQLDeveloper 3.2, then you need to be using the latest JDK 1.6 release.  The bittage of the JDK should match your SQL Developer (and your oracle client if you are using one).

  • Save dataset as .xls in SQL Developer 3.2.2 on MACPRO

    Hi Folks,
I have a question here related to MAC SQL Developer 3.2.2, I need to save a dataset output from a query as .xls and am not able to see the option to save as .xls? and when I enforce to save it as .xls. also, I have no issue when I save as .txt. if I copy from txt to excel sheet then data of some columns will be moved left or right so I won't have an accurate data when I paste in excel. any idea why?
    Thanks

    Hi Mohammed,
I need to save a dataset output from a query as .xlsPlease clarify. Do you mean to say the query is run from the worksheet using Run Statement (Ctrl+Enter), but when you right-click inside the Query Result grid and select Export from the context menu that you cannot select xls from the Format drop-down list on page 1 of the Export Wizard ?
Hope this helps ... it should be there.

  • SQL Developer, SQL Server and the ampersand

    Hello,
I am connected to a SQL Server database (2008) and am having difficulty getting a query to run properly in SQL Developer (3.1.07).
    Simplified Example
    select table_field
    from table
    where table_field <> 'This & That';
    Expected results
    table_field
    Other stuff
    Other stuff
    Other stuff
    Actual results
    table_field
    Other stuff
    This & That
    This & That
I cannot seem to get SQL Developer to recognize the & as a literal ampersand. I've tried escaping it numerous ways, but it always thinks it is a variable.
The query works exactly as expected in MS SQL Management Studio and Toad. Of course, I can just run it in one of those but I'd like to try to get this to work in SQL Developer. Suggestions?
Please let me know if I can provide further information. Thanks.

    Hi,
SQL Developers worksheet is designed for Oracle, but we allow you to run statements against SQL Server and other non Oracle databases.
This can lead to some quirks, like the one you experienced.
Oracles SQL*Plus uses ampersand to define substitution variables.
Oracle SQL Developer has implemented the same concept.
Unfortunately this does not make sense when running something against a non Oracle database.
As a workaround, you can run the following SQL*Plus command in SQL Developer, before your SQL Server query.
    SET DEFINE OFF;
    select 'hello & goodbye';
The following maybe of some help as well.

  • SQL Developer version 3.2.20.09 and Oracle Diff

It is my understanding that from this version onwards this functionality would be available without licensing but it is not available for use actually, maybe I am doing something wrong or just "bad info" ?
I downloaded jre version 32 bits.
    Thanks!

It is my understanding that from this version onwards this functionality would be available without licensing but it is not available for use actually, maybe I am doing something wrong or just "bad info" ?
You need to provide more information than that.
    1. How did you come by this 'understanding'?
    2. What does 'not available for use' mean? It is available to me.
    3. We have no idea if you are "doing something wrong" since you didn't bother to post WHAT you are doing or HOW you are doing it.  You do realize that you have to have at least two DIFFERENT databases open don't you?. You can't do a 'diff' between databases if you don't have two databases open to 'diff'.
    4. As restated in the PL/SQL Packages and Types doc for the DBMS_METADATA_DIFF package
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18283_01/appdev.112/e16760/d_metadiff.htm
Use of the DBMS_METADATA_DIFF package requires a license to the Oracle Enterprise Manager Change Management option.
Someone from the sql developer team will need to confirm whether the product uses that package and if the free sql developer application  waives or alters that license requirement. My own hypothesis would be that the product uses the package but does NOT waive or alter the license requirement.

  • About SQL Developer migration objects

    Hi all,
I'm using the SQL Developer Version 2.1.1.64 for Windows.
I've migrated a SQL Server 2005 database to Oracle.
Well, many objects was created, like triggers to emulate identity sql server, packages, MD* tables, and so on.
Well, I need to use all funcionality of Oracle without use these created objects only to migration.
Can I drop these objects? Any problem with this?
    Thank you very much!!!!

    Hi Tads,
There are two sets of objects created during a migration.
    1) The Migration Repository objects (MD_.... tables, MIGRATION & MD_META packages, MGV_ ... views ) and so on.
These objects are used by SQL Developer to perform the migration.
The tables hold the information about your captured and converted models and the packages perform some of the conversion.
These objects are created automatically for you when you Associate the migration repository with a connection.
Normally you would create a brand new schema (ex: migration_repo) , create a connection for it and Associate with this connection.
Then , after the migration is complete, you can drop that schema and all the repository objects with it.
Alternatively you can right click the connection again and choose, Delete Repository.
    2)Target Oracle objects.
These are the objects you have converted and generated into Oracle.
They include the tables,views,procedures,... that you have converted from your source database.
    They also include
    a) SQLSERVER_UTILITIES package, which helps emulate functions referenced in your stored procedures, triggers and views
    b) Oracle Global Temporary Tables, which replicate the temporary tables found in your SQL Server stored procedures
    c) Triggers and Sequences, used to emulate SQL Server identity columns
Well, I need to use all functionality of Oracle without use these created objects only to migration.
Can I drop these objects? Any problem with this?If you have associated your migration repository with the same schema as you have create your target objects in, then both sets of objects will be mixed.
You can right click on the connection and choose "Delete Migration Repository" to remove these objects.
The remaining objects should be left as is, unless you are confident you do not need them.

    Dermot.

  • 30EA3 SQL Developer 3 error message while migrating SQL sever database

I was mirating a SQL sever 2005 database to Oracle 11g, and got the following error message during the process:
"Migration action have failed. Check the migration reports for Detail. :null".
After the error message, I could see the "Captured Database Objects" and "Converted Database objects" under the "Migration Projects". However, if I open the generated scripts, it only contains the fowlloing, nothing else:
    "SET DEFINE OFF;
    PROMPT Creating User Emulation ...
    CREATE USER Emulation IDENTIFIED BY Emulation DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP;
GRANT CREATE SESSION, RESOURCE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW, CREATE SYNONYM,CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM TO Emulation;"
What's the cause of this problem, please advice. Thanks.
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
The next thing in the generation script should have been the definition of the sqlserver_utilities package.
This package emulates some of the system functions found in SQL Server.
It gets placed into your converted model as the very last step of the conversion.
Building the generation script (where your failure happened) is straight forward and I wouldn't expect an error here.
I would guess something went wrong during the capture or conversion and is only surfacing during the generation phase when it tried to write the sqlserver_utilities package to the generation file.
I could be wrong, but I would manually check that conversion completed successfully first.
    1) Browse you converted model under
    Migration Projects "Nav" : Projects > YourProjectName > YourModelName(default a date)> Converted Database Objects > Procedures > YourProcName
    a) Are there any red crosses on any of these nodes in your navigator ?
    b) If you right click on a converted database name is "reconvert" grayed out or available?
    c) run the following in the SQL Worksheet against the same connection you used for the migration repository
    select * from md_packages;
Is there one row there with the definition of sqlserver_utilities in its package_header and native_sql columns?
Also do you have anything in the capture issues, conversion status or conversion issues reports (double click you project and the migration reports should pop up on the right hand side, each report a separate tab) ?
Just trying to pinpoint what happened here.
    Thanks for your feedback,

  • How to compare two schemas in Oracle sql developer

    Hello,
I need to compare both the data and schemas details (columns etc) between two schemas on different databases (connections).
What is the easiest and most efficient way to do this? Hopefully in Oracle Sql Developer or Sql Plus?
    Thanks.

In SQL Developer go to Tools -> Schema Diff !
in SQL* Plus you will need to write PL/SQL for this.

  • Third Party Database Support in SQL Developer

As a rule I don't (blatantly) advertise my blog on this forum, but I have just had feedback from my recent posting which made realize you might not have stumbled on this new functionality. i.e. Third Party Database Support in SQL Developer. <br>
<p>In the Evaluation Release 3 (1.1.0.22.71) you can connect to and browse MySQL and SQL Server databases. The Getting Started document on OTN, does mention where to get the jdbc drivers and briefly, how to set it up in SQL Developer. This blog entry takes that a step further.
<p>If you have access to either of these databases, please take a whirl and see what you think. For production you will also be able to connect to an MS Access database.
    <p>Regards<br>
    Sue

The great thing, as you see from Donal's reply, is that other teams can take advantage of SQL Developer's framework, so we have a few teams working on extensions to SQL Developer and the product benefits from the work they do.
From the SQL Developer team's side, we have logged and fixed bugs for 8i support in 1.1. since the last evaluation drop, so when you get the next drop for SQL Developer, you should be able to browse more objects using 8i. Also I have logged further 8i bugs and will continue to have more fixed. This is an ongoing project. We also have a number of features that need to be added to support current releases and try to give these a high priority. So the team is focused on addressing as many requests as we can for supported features.
We know we have many customers on unsupported databases and would like to support them too, having said that, we have run a poll on this forum for ages and have had 7.5% (22) responses for databases lower than 9.x. It's a small poll, but based on all our feedback we believe we have the right focus.
    Regards
    Sue
