Thanks a lot Apple...

So here I thought I got a great deal on a 30G iPod from the Apple refurb store. I recieve the package, open it up, and begin to get it ready for use. I found it kinda odd that while the documentation said USB2.0 cable, all I got was a FIREWIRE cable with it. Thinking nothing of it, I plug it all into my shiny new iMac. Much to my surprise, the iPod comes to life and tells me that Firewire isn't supported, please use the 'included' USB cable.
***?! IT DIDN'T COME WITH A USB CABLE! The only cable I got was a Firewire cable!
So thank you very much Apple... Now I have to give you even more of my money (which I'm sure was the plan from the beginning) and purchase a USB2.0 cable just to use my iPod.

Look at the bright side, you can still charge it with a FW cable despite the warning. I use a split cable with USB and FW and when I am done syncing I leave it connected to charge. Or if I don't want to go through the syncing as well. Keep it and pay like $5 for a USB one at Best Buy.

  • Thanks a lot Apple - Try actually testing your software next time.

    I upgraded to v7.0 today.
Once it started up, it said my 5G didn't have the latest software and needed to be updated. So I told it to update. It showed an update window, but after about 10 seconds, I noticed my iPod unmounted. However, the update screen said it was still updating. I let it go, to see what would happen. After 30 minutes, the same.
So I tried to shutdown iTunes. It wouldn't. I had to shut it down through Task Manager, which said it had stopped responding. I disconnected my iPod and rebooted. Once it booted back up, I connected my iPod. Now normally, this would cause iTunes to start up also. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. Instead it was recognized as a drive by windows, showing me the contents. I manually opened iTunes... but it didn't show any iPod connected.
I unplugged my iPod and plugged it back in. Still... no iPod showing in iTunes. I searched the Internet and found this page, that looked like it addressed the exact problem I was having.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I followed EVERY step on that page, in an attempt to get it to work correctly. Nothing worked.
So far I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 3 times. Still no resolution. It won't see my iPod unless I leave it plugged in and then reboot. However, if I eject it and then reconnect it... it won't see the iPod.
So I tried rolling back my software to an earlier version of iTunes. Won't let me do that either, as it says the library was created by a later version.
    Thanks for nothing, Apple.

No, you shouldn't. But things happen. With everything. Including iPods. Like I mentioned earlier, this issue happened to me also. Its not overly complex to reformat an iPod. Also, I wouldn't be so quick to say that 7.0 caused the problem, but possibly exposed one that you already had?
How can any company test for every possibly configuration that everyone has on their machines. As far as updates go, I think Apple has done an excellent job in the past few years. Has everything been perfect? No. Should we expect them to be? Sure. But nothing ever is.
And lastly, as this is a support discussion board, what other kind of posts were you expecting to see here?
So back to you original problem. I am the second person on this topic to suggest reformatting. Did that work for you?

  • Multi-seat Leopard to Lion upgrade... thanks a lot Apple!

So, if I understand Apple's stance that Lion will only be available through the Mac App Store, and that the Mac App Store is only available on the latest version of Snow Leopard, then my job to upgrade my company's 10 Macs has just become a nightmare!
    On EACH Mac, I must:
upgrade to Snow Leopard (about 30 mins?)
download and patch to latest Snow Leopard (another 30 mins?)
download Lion (4gb... on our broadband, that's about 4 hours)
run install (guessing another 30 mins again?)
So, you're seriously telling me that I will have to spend 5.5 hours upgrading EACH Mac individually? That's 55 HOURS!
Unless it's possible to copy the Lion installer, in which case the job becomes a little less onerous... except that Apple's business licensing for the Mac Store says that you can only install on the one Mac, and not all of your Macs like a home licence... so I'm guessing that I will have to download for each Mac.
    ABSOLUTE BLEEDIN’ NIGHTMARE!
THIS IS A JOKE! Come on Apple - you HAVE to release the Lion installer on DVD!

The other thing is, anybody running an organization who decides to update their operating system the day it is released should be advised of known truths of releases:
    1. They almost always are not compatible with every mission critical software, unless they just happened to pick every software that has been keeping up with Apple day to day.
    2. A clone backup of their system is a must prior to any update.  No telling if hardware or software issues might be lurking in the depths of the system that would surface upon an update.
    3. Nobody said you can't do a network install once downloaded to one system, as long as certain licensing terms have been paid for and agreed to.
Wait until the July release before jumping to conclusions.

  • Thanks a LOT!  "Upgrade" should be punctuated with a "?" re Mail!

Why did Apple decide NOT to let us know about their decision to no longer support RSS in Mail!  Do they have folks who just sit and wait for the end users to ***** and complain, and they "magically" fix the problem as if it was their idea all along?  Sounds like they need to get into government service...
    Thanks a LOT Apple...

  • Trying to install a new apple id for my mother in Germany, entering her year of birth 1942, getting the comment that she has not the minimum age for an apple ID? Any idea? Thanks a lot!

    Apologies, first time.
While setting up an old iPad on my Windows PC in Singapore for my mother in Germany, tried to create an Apple ID, giving the birth year with 1942 with Apple commenting that this is under age, wow, need to be above 70 for an Apple ID? Believe I must be stupid somewhere, anybody encountered something similar, any solution? tried 3 times, still same.
    Thanks a lot!

I would simply enter a different year.
As far as i am aware i haven't found any reason it needs to be accurate.

  • I took my iMac 2010 to a "Third Party" company to replace my hdd, they did, but now it will not boot. if i took this to the Apple store, how much would it cost to fix? if i buy my own SSD (£70) Thanks a LOT!

Well, this "third party" is going to put my old hdd back and not charge me any money (as he did not fix it) but i think its better off taking it to an AASP because i have a feeling Apple store will charge way too much.
The way I read that comment – you seem to suggest the Mac was broken before the third party replaced the disk - is that the case or was it working before the HD was replaced?
Since the Mac is out of warranty you will have to pay for any repairs wherever you take it. Authorised Apple service centres will be able to get parts whereas any non certified technicians will have to use 'grey market' parts since Apple will not sell parts to the public. These may be reconditioned or not official parts - it's a risk to use them. Visit the Apple store & ask them - there is no point in lying about it being handled by a third party. An Apple tech may be able to tell when they open the case, depending on how meticulous your third party was.
If you are handy with a screwdriver & have tools and a lot of patience you could use a guide on iFixit.com, but there is no indication of why this Mac not booting up.
It could be that the disk is not formatted correctly.
Are you sure the tech copied an OS onto the disk? Did they install the OS for you or did they clone the old disk?
Can you boot from a backup disk or from an install disk? Does the disk appear in Disk Utility when booted from another OS (either the installer or a backup).
'Not booting' can mean so many things, what does booting do exactly? Grey screen, black screen, any noises or tones, any signs of life at all…?
If you look at the iFixit guides you will see many fiddly connectors, if the tech failed to hook them all back up it could explain the failure, or perhaps you just have a disk that is 'dead on arrival' - sometimes that happens. A properly trained technician should be able to figure that one out.

    Hi people,
I'm typing from Brasil, sorry my English.
I have a iMac 21,5" Intel mid 2011 and I need to know if is possible I change the original 500Gb HD for a 512Gb SSD?
I intend to keep the original DVD driver and install the SSD in the same HD place.
If yes, where I find a tutorial about this?
And I will like to know if the 512GB Solid-State Drive Kit for Mac Pro is compatible with iMac.

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

    Thanks a lot.
P.S: For the iphone 4S. is there any difference for the one from online shop or the actual store?

iPhones purchased from the online Apple Store in Australia will be unlocked. To the best of my knowledge, unlocked iPhone are not available from the physical Apple Stores at this time, though you can call the Apple Store in Melbourne and inquire.
Note that the warranty on iPhones is not international, so if you purchase an iPhone in Australia and it needs service, you would have to ship the iPhone to someone in Australia to take or send to Apple for service and then ship it back to you.

  • 10.6.6 Update Causing Major Problems!!!!!  Thanks for nothing Apple!!!

Strange things have happened to my computer after the 10.6.6 update:
    1) My system already had Snow Leopard installed, but now when I go to "About this Mac" it has mysteriously downgraded to 10.5.8.

    4) Disc drive will not read or boot from my Snow Leopard or Leopard CDs.
    5) Will no longer detect my external hard drive where my Time Machine backups are held.

It didn't do anything to Front Row on my computer. I doubt it did anything on yours, either.
    1) Update wouldn't have done that. There is no code in the update to replace that string with 10.5.8.
    2) Your boot files are messed up or non-existent. Very rarely this can be fixed without reinstalling the system.
    3) There are always a lot of permissions that can't be repaired by DU because they don't need to be repaired. They're not broken, just different. Did you check permissions before you applied the update?
    4) Sounds like you have serious hardware problems. With the Snow Leopard disk installed, can you restart while holding down Option key and get to the startup manager? If so, pick the Snow Leopard disk and boot from it. Use Disk Utility in the Utilities menu (available after selecting a language) and repair the disk. Don't repair permissions from that disk.
If it finds errors and fixes them, try booting from the hard drive. You may have to re-install Snow Leopard.

You can download it for free from the Apple Developer Connection web site, but you have to have a membership. Go to this page:
    http://developer.apple.com/products/
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and the bottom right choice is the free online membership. Once you're signed up, you can log in and Download the Xcode tools. There will probably be several to choose from, including Xcode 3 and Xcode 2.5, so make sure you get the right one.

Thanks a lot for your help ,

What country are you in ? If you are in the US then you can only use the US iTune store, and you can't use a Canadian credit card with the US store - a credit card needs to have been issued by a bank in the country where you are.
If you are in Canada then remove your old credit card from your account and then update your country/region and billing address on your account e.g. by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store on your phone and 'view Apple id' on the popup, or via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes
