Thanks for the advice - mighty mouse is actually quite mighty

so a while ago I started a thread looking for opinions on what mouse to get to replace my HORRIBLE kensington bluetooth optical pilot mouse. incidentally, DO NOT buy one of these mice. they are wrong. I had it for ages because I got it to go with my little PB 12", back then I didn't really know much about what was out there. I liked the small size, it had a good grip and felt good quality. however, it always would drop out of connection, and it was so fickle with tracking, sometimes the pointer would just jump all over the screen, other times it would hardly move at all unless you shook it. I just figured this was the tradeoff for having a wireless mouse and that one was probably just as bad as the next. plus, I wasn't using it with logic, just web browsing and email, so it wasn't really mission critical.
anyway, I didn't really do anything about replacing the mouse till now. I am currently working on a TVC, with a big production sound involving far too many tracks of vocals and so on. and trying to edit takes and just do my thing in logic with this mouse was as close to torture as I am ever going to want to come. a couple of times I nearly threw it across the studio, and I definitely did smash it on the desk a couple of times. then, I also considered plunging my head in a bucket of kerosene and lighting a match. so I figured, no let's not do that. let's get a better mouse. I was actually using the trackpad instead of the mouse out of preference, so I figured this is not a good sign, there must be something better out there by now.
so I looked around on the web, read some reviews. thought about advice I had gotten here and elsewhere. then today, after having some trouble finding a dealer that would actually let me try the mouse before buying it, I went in with my MBP and logic key and sat down to test out the wireless mighty mouse.
one thing I hadn't realised till I started reading reviews was that it is a laser mouse, not an optical one. I had no idea just how much better this meant the tracking would be. to be honest, till now I always thought I'd go with a logitech or something because I just thought I'd hate the scrollball thingy, and the size and shape of the mighty mouse always seemed like it was just about clean apple design and not ergonomics.
I still have to say that in terms of grip, I'd probably prefer one of the more sculpted logitechs or so on, also because I have big hands. but.. after using it for a while, and seeing just how many millions of times better the tracking is on this mouse than on my previous piece of sh*t kensington, I can't tell you how good it feels to actually be in control of the pointer again.. as opposed to feeling like a ******** amputee with a tourette's syndrome twitch, muscle spasms and up/down left/right dyslexia. and I apologize to any logic users who may in fact be ******** amputees with a tourette's syndrome twitch, muscle spasms and up/down left/right dyslexia. that's just the best way I could describe trying to cludge my way through logic using that RUBBISH mouse.
I also downloaded the mouse zoom preference pane because I found the maximum tracking speed in the mac mouse control panel a little too slow.
but anyway.. thanks again to everyone who suggested the mighty mouse. I honestly wasn't really considering it cos it always looked a little too design-ey and not ergonomic enough for me. but, I'm rather pleasantly surprised and no longer feeling like setting fire to my own head.
btw for anyone out there looking for a mouse.. make sure you try out the wireless one, not the wired one, because it has laser tracking as opposed to optical.. and for precision in logic for editing and manipulating miniscule knobs and faders on software synths (CS-80V leaps to mind...) it really does ease your pain.
ok I'm really just procrastinating now. back to work..

ok as I continue working with this mouse.. let me just say.. people: if you haven't used a mouse with laser tracking yet with logic, seriously, try one. the precision and accuracy of these things is alarmingly good. it's one of those didn't even know there was a problem till you tried it kind of things..
unless you are one of those people who has managed to train your brain to use a trackball or whatever, seriously, try out a mouse with laser tracking. night and day.
there are some logitechs that have it, and also the wireless mighty mouse, not the other mighty mice. that is such a stupid name.

    Thanks to those that posted about pre update tasks to make sure things go smoothly.
    I did reboot from the OS disk repairing permissions and the disk before updating, so far the update is working fine on both my G4 desktop and my Powerbook.

  • NumberFormatException problems. Thanks for the help

    Hi,
    Thanks for your help.
    I also tried using parseInt() method from Integer, but came up with the same exception:
    java.lang.NumberFormatException: 8
    from the line sets = sets.valueOf(buffed);
    Here is the code in question:
                                    String buffed;
                                    String cuffed = " ";
                                    Integer sets = new Integer(1);
                                    buffed = in.readLine();
                                    System.out.println(buffed);
                                    sets = sets.valueOf(buffed);
                                    int total = sets.intValue();System.out.println(buffed) pulls the string "8", as it should: the in.readLine() is using a dataOutputSteam type "in", and reads the line, which consists of 8 and ('/n').
    If anyone can offer a reason as to why this is happening, I'd be very grateful. Thanks for your time and consideration.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I confused myself, and I actually used the Buffered Reader object "in" and not the dataOutputStream object. Actually the file I'm reading is a txt file created by a dataOutputStream. This seems to create a buffer around the actual character so that when I do
                                    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader();
                                    String unparsed = in.readLine();and say the txt line was output in the form
                                    DataOutputStream out = new dataOutputStream();
                                    String salsa = " ";
                                    out.writeChars(salsa.valueOf(count));
                                    out.writeChar('\n');, where int count = 8, I get back a string of length 3 such that
                                    char[] twisty;
                                    twisty = unparsed.toCharArray(); returns twisty[0] = "[
    twisty[1] = "8"
    and twisty[2] = "[
    This seems very odd to me. How do I get rid of the borders surrounding "8", and how did they get there in the first place?
    Again, thanks so much for the help, and sorry for the misdirection in the first question. Thanks for your time.

    I am running 10.5.8 and want to make use of the icloud changeover, I understand that I must first buy snow leopard 10.6 and then buy lion 10.7. Do I buy these as upgrade versions or full versions? I am not very techie, thanks for any advice.

    A 10.5 era machine is better left on 10.6.8
    I don't advise upgrading it to 10.7 as you'll have to buy all new versions of software for a older model machine, some are not ready yet and some of your third party driver software may not be available for your other hardware.
    10.7 is slower and requires 4GB of RAM actually.
    10.8 is being released this summer and it won't run on certain older graphic cards, so shortly you will be behind again.
    Save your money for a new 10.8 machine. IMO
    These rapid OS X upgrades are for those who like to be on the cutting edge and can afford to buy new hardware often, you didn't even upgrade to 10.6, so your not that sort of person obviously.
    But you do need to upgrade to 10.6 for security issues and faster video. It will run your 10.5 Rosetta software, but 10.7 will not.

  • Hi, I am interested in upgrading to snow leopard but I've heard in some cases it messed up peoples computers. Is there any advantages in upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard? Thank you in advance for the advice!

    Hi, I am interested in upgrading to snow leopard but I've heard in some cases it messed up peoples computers. Is there any advantages in upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard? Thank you in advance for the advice points will be given to multiple users. Here are my computer specs (Leopard 10.5.8.)
      Model Name:    iMac
      Model Identifier:    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:    2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:    1
      Total Number Of Cores:    2
      L2 Cache:    4 MB
      Memory:    2 GB
      Bus Speed:    800 MHz

    You need not upgrade unless there is something you do that cannot be done unless you upgrade. Upgrading OS X doesn't mess up anyone's computer. Users mess up their computers.
    Your model has 2 GBs of RAM which is adequate for Snow Leopard although 4 GBs would be better. Upgrading to Snow Leopard will cost $29.00. You can order from Apple's Online Store. Here's a good procedure to follow:
    How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
    Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
    Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
    If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
    Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
    Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
    Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
    Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

    Hi,
    Sorry I can't help you. I just wanted to let you know I have the same exact problem. It started three days ago and I've been going back and forth with creative support and nothing has worked. I am beginning to grow really distressed. I feel a little better now because after seeing that it's happening with someone else, it is most likely not the player. I am running windows 98 SE as well. I also have an AMD Duron processor. I have a new computer on the way with windows XP I really hope it works. But now I have a new problem. I listed it on the front page of this forum a few minutes ago. My player froze and now only boots up in rescue mode. I am getting so frustrated with my player. If you figure anything out will you be as kind as to send me a message on how you got your player working again? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

  • HT1473 New to i Tunes. Cant load CD to i Tunes ( wont accept?). 2/3 of my collection from Zune (all my CD downloads) wont load up either.  Whats the trick ?Thanks in advance for the advice. .

    New to iTunes. Have large library entirely from legit CDs purchased. Only about a third of my libabry downloads into i tunes and even new, common CDs dont seem to load up ( example, Real Live Roadrunning- Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris) when I try to transfer in tunes from my CD. Is there some trick to this? Thanks in advance for the advice.

    Both, but that helped. After different tries at one point it prompted a reformat from wma and that did the trick. Deleted the iTunes library and rebuilt from scratch reformated. The cd import had dropped it into a file in neither Zune, nor iTunes, nor "music". I stumbled acorss it hours later..have to figure out how to do that better. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the crappy software that nuked my Curve. My decision to get an iPhone just got easier.

    After the initial sync, my Curve now looks like I just bought it. No more emails on my device, calendar failed to sync, mysterious error messages with no corresponding KB article here, it even forgot my timezone. Thanks for the lip service, but I'm taking my business back to Apple where they have engineers who give a **bleep**.

    I'm having the same issues as the first user and this is now the third time that it appears I am going to have to rebuild/restore my entire berry.  I'm sorry guys, but I don't want to have to do this once a month - if I was a fan of restores and repairs, I'd get a PC.
    When I first restore, syncing works fine.  Then, within a week or so, my syncing only works properly if I do it one way.  (By clicking "Replace all contacts on this Blackberry device" - if I don't select that option, one of two things will happen.  The Blackberry will miraculously have duplicates of every entry in the address book OR the syncs will fail right at the outset.  So for a few weeks, I have to remember to click that little option to replace the contacts.  Inevitably, later that month (3 times now), no syncs will work.  I'll just get repeated 'sync' failed efforts.  No amount of restarts or power cycles will fix anything and essentially, the BB is screwed.  The second time it happened, the BB actually replaced every one of my contacts with a random contact in the list.  I had the same Richard repeated 300+ times.
    It's a good thing I do regular back-ups, except that the back-ups don't remember any of my preferences and I have to redo all my settings and accounts.  Essentially, this is a load of BS.  The berry itself works fine as long as I power cycle it once a day - but the syncing application is a disaster.
    Furthermore, the calendar sync has NEVER worked.  All I ever get is a blank calendar, which is silly since my iCal is packed with events.  Also, the Clear Device Data never works, which is also a bit crap - because that seems to me to be the easiest way to fix this.
    Starting tomorrow, I'm going to be harassing my provider to get me a new handheld because the Desktop Manager Software ruined mine.
    The next time this happens, I imagine I'll be switching to an iPhone.  (Which I absolutely DO NOT want to do because I detest the touch screen keyboard an would much rather prefer to use my Curve's tactile QWERTY.)

    Error 1 or -1
    This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
    The" may need service' meand there is a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    Close ... before going for a specific Cisco app ... lets find out some details:
    Host we need more details:
    What is your server environment (Windows Server, or Mac OS X Server, or Linux)?
    What security is implemented in your environment - as what is restricted (RDP for all or specifc credentials on all machines? Are you part of local admin group to the server you wish to connect)?
    Does your environment Support CISCO IPSec connection? If so use Settings> VPN and IPSec tab to enter VPN details, if not then go with above suggestion. IF your restricted to RSA then either built in VPN settings or 3rd party app for RSA would suffice.
    Finally, there are many RDP applications out there I use "Mocha RDP Light" (free minimal ads when launched not when connecting).
