Thanks to OS X

Question

I do not post much in these various discussion areas, but I just want to say how amazed I am at OS X (my version-Tiger). I just finished configuring my included Apache server for php and cgi. I also installed MySQL and configured it. I have my own web site up and running now, with all the bells and whistles. My perl scripts are functioning great, with the exception of SSI, which I have yet to conquer. I have php scripts that access the MySQL database perfectly. I mean, is the sky the limit? I don't mean to sound like an Apple ad, nor do want to sound like a broken record.
I am just thoroughly pleased. I will buy OS X Server as soon as I can, and even upgrade my Mac down the road.

Hehe, I like the analogy. I think it comes down to what you're used to or what you expect. "Each to their own" I guess.
I can't really argue with you. I don't know linux so I don't really know what other customisable things you're after that can't be done in OSX; things like expanding the window from any side or other such things? I must admit, Finder windows can be customised as much as I've ever needed, although perhaps I just don't know what I'm missing.
I've only every used macs, so I suppose that makes me a supporter of the philosophy behind the Human IG's, although I'm not obsessed enough to moan about dashboard and all the metal changes, etc; that doesn't bother me in the slightest. The point though is that I don't think most of us can truly appreciate the thinking and design behind the guidelines that Apple religiously stick too, best illustrated by the latest 'Mighty Mouse' - how long has it taken Apple to make a two button mouse? And even now they've done it the right button is off by default and an accidental or clumsy random press will always yield a left click.
You're right though, having the option to do something, however hidden, is better than not in most cases but there's half a chance that Apple don't want to spread themselves too thin in this way - the unified menubar , consistency to apps, and other such things are extremely important to OSX. Perhaps we'll see some more of the things you want to do in later versions of the OS.
I must admit that I've never quite grasped 'focus follows mouse'. I remember one of the first times firing up X11 that I was left having to actually click on tool windows first to focus them before being able to select the thing I wanted. I thought it was nonsense and was deeply shocked I guess. Well that got sorted fast, and it was under the guise of a 'focus follows mouse' setting. Thing is, OSX native apps and the Finder don't have that oddity, they do it fine and I can't imagine the situation where any window was focused if the mouse went over it! A nightmare of the highest proportions! I'd have windows flying everywhere, apps coming to the front on any twitch of the mouse. If I was typing in one window and if I accidentally knocked the mouse over another, would I suddenly be typing into that one instead? Surely this isn't what you're on about? Also, what mouse settings are you after that aren't in the prefs? Sorry about these questions but I'm genuinely intrigued!
