Thanks Tuus! -- T61 replacement board

I wanted to make a new thread, not only thanking Tuus, but to let others know that it is possible to get a fix for dead or dying T61s. There are other threads on this but I'd like to share my experience.
I got my T61p about 4 years ago and it had worked like a charm, with only a minor battery issue, for all those years. A few months ago (while abroad in the UK) it just decided to quit on me. The bios beeps on booting said it was a video chip issue, and that's exactly what was up. Thankfully my HD wasn't affected and I waited until I was home to figure out what to do. After loads of searching on the issue (which is prevalent) I saw posts on here thanking Tuus and about the fix. So I sent him a message which he quickly replied to. He explained that these boards (prior to 08/08) have a known faulty nvidia chip and they usually kick it earlier than mine did. I have started PC gaming more in the few months before it died so I assume it was a heat issue, which I now keep an eye on using TPfancontrol.
Through contacting Tuus I got my hands on an 08/08 system board with the entire bottom case along with it. It was a lengthy process to take apart my old machine and put the new bottom on, but if you follow the manual on Lenovo's site for your system, it's a piece of cake. Just set aside an hour or two and you'll be fine. The best advice I can give to stay organized with it all is to print the pages you need from the manual, and then tape the parts/screws to the corresponding paper. Then lay them out on a flat surface in order. When you get to the end of the disassembly, you just go in reverse to put it back and if you kept everything in order and together, it's really easy. Just remember to clean the contact of the old CPU and transfer it to the new system board and put thermal paste on the GPU. Tuus recommend Arctic Silver 5, which I thankfully had and used myself.
My new board works perfectly. This nvidia chip also is known to not be faulty so I have no worries about it dying out soon, and it also fixed my battery issue that I had since I purchased it. It's safe to say my knew board had made my laptop better than when I originally purchased it. It also helps that I used the new bottom case so now my laptop has the 08/08 model sticker and will have a higher sell price. But I'm not going to be doing that anytime soon.
For those interested, by battery issue was with the small backup on the system board. It wouldn't hold power so I would have to unplug the cord, take the battery out, wait a few seconds, put the battery in, turn it on, then put the plug back in every time I was booting from a charge. So if you are having similar issues, that's most likely your problem there.
Thanks again Tuus! You were extremely helpful, answered all my questions and helped me get my hands on a fantastic new system board! You're the best!
I hope this helps a few of you out as well!! There is hope for your T61!

You're very welcome, I'm glad I was able to help, and to find you such a rare board.
I wish you many of years of use from it.

  • Replacement board.

    Hi there,
I got tired of my Asrock ConRoe865GV board - these temp sensors are freaking out of me - long story. And the fan is outta control too, kept whirring like mad. My other board didn't actually do this, so maybe it's the board. Thinking of getting rid of it once and for all, and sell it to a used comp dealer.
So back to MSI - I need replacement board with AGP and DDR slot, but all I get in my stores are PM8M3-V.
I heard that the PM8M2/3-V are only supporting Celerons, but in the CPU support matrix, there are even more Pentium 4s supported.
Btw, is my Pentium 4 531 (specifically 3.0GHz, 1MB cache, Prescott, 90nm) good to sit on that board? ANyone with these boards with P4 sitting on it?
Or I should get a PM8PM-V? Agh, eeed to recycle my beautiful RAM sticks...
p.s: Also I've owned a PM8M2-V, and it's running sweet and nice on my Celeron D 331, but wanted more of it (games, games, games) so I changed the system.

  • T61 replacement screen compatibility?

I managed to break the screen on the laptop that I purchased less than 30 days ago.
I have looked on Ebay and found what I believe to be a reasonably priced replacement screen but I'm not sure if it is compatible with my T61-7658.
As I understand it some of these screens (such as my 7658) are "Widescreen" and some are not.
Can anyone look at this Ebay item and given me advice about compatibility?
Thanks a TON for any advice!

this is your spec, you have the standard 14.1 inch LCD with XGA resolution (non-widescreen model) according to the online spec, the screen you pointed is a widescreen model.
However, i think there is something wrong with the spec listed by Lenovo, since 4 cell battery listed is only available in the 14.1 inch widescreen. I will contact someone for you and see what is going on.
You can post a picture of the laptop?

  • 925XE Neo Platinum-54G - 2nd RMA replacement, board locks up

I would really appreciate any assistance anyone can provide about the problems I'm having with this mobo, I'm ready to toss it. This one is the 3rd RMA replacement; the first one failed within 7 months of purchase and the replacement that MSI sent for that one failed within 3 months after receiving it. The current board locks up my system after boot; the time to lock up is anywhere from 15 seconds to 3 minutes. I have hooked up only bare minimum components to the board to reduce the possibility that it's a compnent issue, but everything else in my system has been working fine. System specs are:
Intel 3.2 ghz single core proc
    Geil DDR2 SDRAM 533 (PC2 4300) 3 x 1gig sticks
Sapphire RADEON 7000 64meg PCI video card
Creative Soundlbaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card
Maxtor DiamondMax 200gig SATA drive (3x)
Let me know what other information you might need to help. Thank you to anyone that can help.

  • Getting a replacement board in the UK (975x Powerup)

    Guys,
I think there is something up with my RAID controller ...
I've been battling for weeks with getting any RAID to work on it ... the lastest is, that after putting in the drivers using the F6 method, during the GUI setup of WinXP, I get
    STOP x 000000F4 (0x00000003, xx,xx,xx)
This looks like a RAID hardware failure ... as if I go with an IDE single drive install, I get no problems at all ... no crashes, memory problems, drive problems, X1900 problems or anything ... sweet as ... can play games all day.
I got this board from Dabs about 2 weeks ago to the day ... I bet I have a NIGHTMARE proving this ... also, I don't see any MSI tech support or phone number for the UK.
    Any advice/thoughts ?
Very disheartened ... gutted about this board.
    S.S.

I am very interested in what you have to say - you might be able to help me solve this problem before I have to send this board back - tomorrow! I really *don't* want to have to send it back, as it's going to take ages to come.
However, I really need you to talk me through it. You say 'read the manual', well, that manual I have is very basic and doesn't actually teach you anything. Yeah, I know how to play with the BIOS and I understand all the basics, but I don't understand why or what you are saying to change ... i'm a novice at these thing.
Perhaps if you could be specific is what you are telling me to try, I could save myself a lot of heartache !
I hope you can help ... many thanks
    S.S.

ok as I continue working with this mouse.. let me just say.. people: if you haven't used a mouse with laser tracking yet with logic, seriously, try one. the precision and accuracy of these things is alarmingly good. it's one of those didn't even know there was a problem till you tried it kind of things..
unless you are one of those people who has managed to train your brain to use a trackball or whatever, seriously, try out a mouse with laser tracking. night and day.

  • T61 replacement fan pre thermal pasted?

I have a T61 7659 1PU with a rattling fan and in hopes of quieting it I bought a Furukawa 44C0825 from IBM online.  It appears to have the thermal paste already applied but I am trying to get confirmation of this before I put it in.  Also if that is the case, is the preapplied paste a decent quality or would I be better off cleaning that off and using the arctic silver arctic alumina that I have?

Well I put in the new fan and went ahead and removed the factory paste and used the Arctic Alumina.  Can you hear the new fan...me either!!

  • Preemptive mobo replacement T61's with Nvidia quadro 140m ?

Have been doing some reading on the Nvidia problems.  I own two T61's (6457-DSU, 8889-26U) which have not had a GPU failure yet.  The dates (next to serial number) on the back of these machines are 08/03 and 08/02 respectively...although the 6457 does have an internal date stamp that is June, 2008 I believe.   My questions are:
    a) what is the failure probability, and b) what is availability of known 'good' replacement boards (intel or newest Nvidia)?  I understand that it's hard to answer the first question.  With OS, memory, wireless, and SSD upgrades, I'm happy with how these computers are performing.   If I'm in there replacing thermal material (thanks TuuS for that suggestion) I wouldn't mind going further with the board replacement if I can find good ones.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are referring to the date on the nVidia chip itself, it uses a different coding system YY/WW  (year/week) instead of YY/MM (year/month) that the laptop uses so an 08/06 would be febuary 2008 not June 2008.
As for availability of boards, I can get the 08/08 boards for your 15.4" model, or the Intel boards. for the 14" standard screen model, they weren't in production when when the updated gpu was used but there are a couple brand new (old stock) boards that were recently uncovered which have gpu chips from 2010. They won't be available long and as far as I know are the only one's availbable anywhere. You can buy them refurbished from ibm still, but they usually have the same problematic gpu chip and come with a shocking price tag. Intel boards are the most cost effective option.
However, if you want to keep your current boards in service as long as possible I recommend you clean and reseat your heatsinks every 1-2 years, get all the dust out and try to avoid unnecessary heat/cool cycling. Don't allow them to go in/out of standby so when they are on they stay at a relatively constant temp. The biggest stress these chips face is the transition from room temp to operating temp and back. Turning the laptop on/off when it's not necessary will take it's toll on the gpu.
I also agree that these are great systems and well worth keeping.

  • Late 2007 MBP Logic Board Replacement (MA896LL/A)

    Hello all,
I have a Late 2007 15" 2.4Ghz MBP (MA896LL/A), and the graphics have just died. I'm considering purchasing a new logic board, and I would like to know where you guys have gone to purchase one. How was your guys' experience with the vendor? How long did your replacement board last? Any suggestions are welcome.
I have done a small amount of research, and I know that there was a 15" 2.6GHz model. The 2.6GHz logic board can fit in my computer, but it looks like it'll be about $100 USD more. Is it worth the upgrade?
    Thank you very much,

  • Replacement Logic Board

I have to replace the logic board on my MBP. It is a 2006 model
    A1150
    SN is W864105CVWW
    2.0 GHz Core Duo
I am seeing a bunch of replacement board options. I don't want to buy one that doesn't fit.
If it is advertised as fitting 1.83/2.0/2.16 A1150 do I have any worries?
I just want to swap boards and move on.
    RDS

    Hi Roger,
If I understand correctly, you're asking if a LB from an A1150 will fit in an A1150? Yes. Do they say/do you care which speed it is? Obviously the 2.0 is going to be exactly the same (if they sell you the right part), and although I suspect there should be no problem with the slower or faster model, it's possible there's a different LB ROM which could have issues with other hardware (but I strongly doubt it). As to the specific unit you get actually functioning, I hope you can get one with a warranty on it. And don't forget the thermal paste.

  • R61I Motherboard Replacement

Afte rmany years my R61I 8918CTO  08/03 has given up the ghost due to the infamous
Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. GARBLED DISPLAY PROBLEM that Lenovo and Nvidia know about and of course refuses to fix now.
I have the 15.4" wide screen with 1900 max resolution, 1394 firewire, bluray writer and T9300 chip so it was a very expensive nice laptop that still does everything I want. I have taken very good care of it over the years and it is in excellent condition. Right now it is brick due to the GPU chip. Now my question is what is the Motherboard number without me taking it apart to get it before I have a replacement board and what motherboards replace it? AFter research I see if I can get the same motherboard after 08/08 it should be good. Or is there another motherboard with a better GPU chip I can use? I know this is an old laptop but it will cost over $1000 to get the same thing now just slightly faster with more memory I do not need so I would like to fix this one.
I have found what I believe is in the laptop either 42W7791 or 42W7882 both with the Nvidia chip. I cannot find a replacement with the Intel chip.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum!

There's the possibility of fitting a T61p planar (Nvidia Quadro FX570M) in your R61i case, but the frame needs modifications and there are other disadvantages. Source (german only): http://thinkwiki.de/R61i#T61-Board_im_R61-Geh.C3.A4use

  • T61 NVIDIA driver not working?

    Hello!
I have a really old T61 (Type 8895) and I updated it to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit from it's original Windows Vista Home Premium recently, which means all the drivers are gone.
So, I went to Lenovo Support and searched for it's drivers, and one of them was a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (v296.88) driver.
Each time I try to install it, it tells me: This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.
I decided to get a newer driver. So, I went to NVIDIA's website, got the newest driver (v320.00) and still, it would give me the same error.
So, I googled the problem, still couldn't find the problem I am having.
What is going on? (I need the laptop for some testing before I decide to get a new laptop and waste money)
    Thanks!
    Sincerly,

    Go to Solution.

Your model 8895 doesn't have nVidia graphics, it has integrated Intel graphics but this is a good thing since the nVidia chips sometimes fail on similar equipped models. You want to install the graphic drivers for the Intel GM965 that matches your windows version.
If you want a more detailed explanation, the nVidia chips used in T61 series built before August 2008 sometimes fail resulting an need to replace the motherboard. Your system is a 14.1" with standard 4:3 screen. This size was phased out starting in the end of 2007 and general production stopped about May or June. We've never seen any of this size manufactured in August 2008 so the only way to get a board with a Good nVidia chip on one of these is an extremely rare new replacement board. The supply of these boards has been exhausted for years but there were recently a few found still sealed in the original IBM boxes. These rare boards generally cost about what the used laptop is worth, but are still a good investment considering this is the last and best Thinkpad made before the switch to the widescreen format, it's also the only standard screen model that supports 8gb of ram. Many users retrofit these T61 boards into T60 models too since they had better screen options.

  • T61 screen flickered for a while, now no backlight

    Hi all,
My T61 widescreen started flickering a couple of weeks back, then a few minutes after startup, the backlight went out. I went to restart, but it still came up dark. A light tap on the side of the cover though brought the backlight back up, but it went out again in few minutes, Also hinging the cover up and down caused the light to flicker on briefly, but not permanently. Tapping and hinging no longer have any effect. I can easily see the desltop with a flashlight and it all looks just as it should.
There hasn't been any "pink screen," which I read here is the symptom for a bad backlight.
Thinking it might be mechanical, a loose connection, (which is what the manul says to check first,) I removed the front monitor bezel and back cover, checked the main connection in the computer, but hesitated to dig into the monitor side further, because of all those "do not touch" stickers.
Any speculation about what's happening? Do bad inverters cause flickering?
I'm considering a new outboard monitor, something larger, because I use the machine for graphics and 1440 x 900 is really kinda small.
Is it any kind of big hassle to connect my T61 to a second monitor? Any constraints on size or other specs ?
    Solved!

Thanks, TuuS, sorry if my message was ambiguous,
The higher prices I was referring to are the ones I've seen for external monitors at the 16:10 resolution, not for replacement screens for my T61. Those external monitors, 1920x1200, not refurbished, do seem to start at higher prices than other resolutions.
That said, I know so little about it that I don't know whether I need to stick with that ratio if I attach an external monitor.
I couldn't agree more about liking the T61, and mine's been great, purchased used for $200, a couple of years ago, and used daily without a hitch since.
The only difficulty I have with the T61 is processing power, which is higher than I expected when I got the machine, but for what I want to do, a hyper-threading quad core, i7 somthing-or-other, is really called for.
Of course, I'd rather not be computer-less for the time it's going to take to afford that i7, and $80 makes sense in the interim. Can you suggest a source for a refurbished screen in the price range you mention?

  • T61 8891-CTO split screen display on startup - nVidia drivers don't work

    Greetings,
I have a T61 model 8891-CTO laptop. The laptop has the following nVidia part - 42X0809SBB NVID Q NVS 140M W/O-WWAN. Whenever I start my laptop I get a split screen display. I tried restoring an old system image and even tried re-installing Windows 7 several times and I still have the same problem. When ever I tried to install the nVidia driver, the OS goes into recovery mode upon startup. The warranty on the machine is expired. I read a few threads in the forum regarding T61 display problems, but was not able to find a solution to my problem. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice for this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help!

    bhaga,
Well, that would tend to unfortunately confirm that you have a problem with the video subsystem - mostly likely the GPU as lead_org suggests above.
If your system is still under warranty, or six months or less outside of warranty, please contact support and they should be able to service the system and replace the system board.
If you are otherwise out of warranty, you may want to check the support site to find the FRU number for your system board and do a bit of searching online for the best price on a replacement board and swap it out.  It's not too hard - will take you about 45-50 mins start to finish.
You will want to pick up some artic silver and clean off all the old thermal paste and use the artic silver on the CPU and GPU when you install the fan / heatsink.
Wish I had some better news for you!
