That Question Mark bug...

Question marks appear after sentences to people I email. In fact, OSX to OSX Mail users are experiencing this.
Has this been fixed yet? And if not, what is an alternative mail client that uses or imports the OSX address book?

In fact, OSX to OSX Mail users are experiencing this.
Haven't heard this yet. If you don't mind, as a test send me an email with several sentences of text - doesn't matter what.
My email address is: allan underscore sampson at mac.com
I don't believe this has been fixed but the reports I've seen indicate this primarily occurs when the recipient uses Windows Outlook which has some known bugs in this regard.

  • Not able to get rid of a Question mark in the Dock

A friend got stuck with a Question Mark in the Dock of his 4 year old iMac that was linked to an app not compatible anymore with his latest 10.8.2 version ( guess it was a Power PC app, before Mountain Lion, he was still on Leopard ). He apparently deleted the app and some dependencies manually ( instead of using App Cleaner & Co. ) and now whenever he is hovering over that Question Mark, even before being even able to pull it out from the Dock, the screen flashes up white and the Finder resets.
Is there a way to access the Dock through an element of his user library to get rid of that Mark, or even through a Terminal command ( not that I like to delve in there, but Terminal commands have helped me personally quite often ) ?
Does the Dock have a dedicated place in the Library's User Folder ? Couldn't find anything on my own Mac.
    Thanks for any clue ....

Right clicking on it is not even an option, just hovering over it seems to induce a "nuclear" reset of the whole desktop and graphic card on the iMac.
Have meanwhile found a possible solution by erasing the dock preference file in the user/library/preferences folder to reset the dock to it's default state. Will try this out through a Skype conversation with that Buddy.

  • Why do i have a question mark on my app store

why  do I have A question mark on my app store?

To delete that question mark, just hold the Command key and drag it off the Finder, so that question mark will be removed. That's caused when the item you had there is deleted, so Finder doesn't find it and it shows the question mark

  • Getting a folder icon with a question mark in it when I start up...

    Hi Guys
I know this isn't a Logic or music-related question, but I trust you guys so I'm asking it here rather than in one of the other Apple forums...!
Sometimes when I start my 2 month old Mac Pro, I get a folder icon in the middle of the screen, with a question mark in it...
This happens approximately one in ten startups...
Does this mean there's something wrong with my boot hard drive? Or some other kind of problem?
If I switch off and start again, it always starts up fine, but I'd be worried if this might indicate my system hard drive is on the way out!
    Any advice?
    Cheers and thanks!
    Mike

You cannot delete (just try it) the Network Startup icon, and I don't think it is the problem. That question mark folder on startup actually tells you that the Mac cannot find a valid system, so if I were you I'ld run a couple of utilities, repair permissions, perform a surface scan of your boot disk etc.
And post the question on the OS X and the Mac Pro forums too.
The question mark in the network startup icon in the Startup Disk Prefpanel simply means that there is no network startup system. I have the same icon. It is not the problem. However, if for some reason your Mac decides on its own to try and start up from it, it would explain your "where's the system" startup ?-folder.
It could mean a lot of things: something almost broken in your system, or maybe a firmware problem or maybe a disk, or even that your keyboard is defective, and that (for example) the letter C hangs 1 in 10 times, making your Mac look for a Boot CD/DVD that isn't there...

  • Question Mark in Finder Windows

All of my Finder windows have a large question mark to the right of the Action icon. When I click on it I get a message saying the item can't be found. What is this?

I also got this reply from another board:
"That would be a file or folder that you had previously dragged to that area. Things that you drag there are like bookmarks, pointing to the actual file or folder. If you have a question mark, that means that the original file or folder has been deleted. So you should just hold down the Command key and then drag that question mark off of that area and it will disappear in a puff of smoke."

  • Blinking grey folder icon with question mark on boot

Hi. Just got my system from the Apple Service center where they have reinstalled a new hard disk for me.
When I come home, and start the machine, it shows me a blinking grey folder icon with a question mark in it.
Only thing I can do in this screen is switch off the power. But when I reboot, it shows me the same icon again.
With google, I discovered that if while rebooting I press the OPTION key, then it boots me into the firmware password mode. How can I automate this? I do not want to have to always boot the laptop with Option key pressed.
    Thanks for any pointers.

That question mark means that your machine can't find a drive with a system installed to boot from. Sounds as if the techs didn't install a system when they replaced the drive... do you still have the installation disc(s) that your MBP might have come with?

  • Why does my imac have a question mark in the doc sayin start osx

my imac has a question mark in my doc. on top of that question mark it say "start osx" how can i fix this

    Your images are "disconnected"
that means they are not in the same place on your hard disk as they were when you imported them into Elements. There are a couple ways this can happen, mostly folks who use Windows to move images to a new location instead of Elements will run into this issue.
To fix it, you either need to move them back using Windows, or Reconnect them using Elements.
You didn't mention waht version you have, but it's done the same in all versions.
Here is a link to the Help doc on how to Reconnect.

  • How to get rid of the question mark on the HP photosmart 7525screen?

I was printing from the HP Paviliondm4 computer to the Photosmart 7525 printer and that page on the computer screen just kept reprinting together with another printing job that I had. It was hard to get rid of it, but eventually it disappeared, the doubling of printing. The problem now is that "question mark" on the printer screen appears, that the "home symbol" on the printer screen has disappeared and can't get it back, as it was the normal screen when I first used the printer. What's the problem that I can't get that "question mark" off?

    Hello @Lester7525,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you only have the question mark on your Photosmart 7525 and cannot get back the home screen back. I will do my best to assist you! Please make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference.
Try performing a hard reset on your printer for more than 60 seconds. Leave the printer turned on> Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
Also, you can try updating the firmware to see if this helps. I will provide the HP Website where you can download this here. (It may not work since this printer is in a different menu.) Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • Menu Bar Time Machine icon displays a Question mark - Problem and Fix

My MacBook over the weekend upon awakening from sleep showed that the Menu Bar Time Machine icon displays a Question mark. The external drive showed as mounted in the finder but repeated tries to Back up Now ended in Latest Backup Failed. Hmmm. Never saw that before. Did a restart and ran Disk Utility Verify Disk on the start up disk and it came out OK. So I then ran Disk Utility on the external FW backup drive and as soon as it reported that the FW disk was fine, Time Machine started up on it's own and did a back up and all is back to normal after leaving the TM drive attached the remainder of the weekend. All backups are back to working fine with no repeat of the problem.

If for some reason the computer has trouble communicating with the drive it will report a failure when TM tries to back up, and will display that question mark. It's good you were able to fix it and get TM running again.

  • Flashing question mark, utilities won't find hard drive

On an iMAC DV 400, 640MB ram running OS10.4.5, I tried to install an OS9 folder, so I could run some classic software. Started install, but a pop-up message gave the impression that the install would write over my OSX, so I aborted the install to re-check the instructions and reassure myself that all would be fine. From that point on, I got the flashing question mark. The computer will boot to OS9 or OSX install disks, but disk first-aid (on 9) does not find the disk and disk utilities (on X) finds it but will not let me repair the disk. Tried resetting PRAM, but it did not help. I am still on the original 10GB harddrive, so am considering an upgrade anyway, but would prefer to save this one if possible.
    Grateful for any suggestions.

    Lemmer,
re: "will eventually boot to X" and "just keeps flashing that questions mark"
A question mark at boot up I believe usually means that the computer is looking for the system folder and cannot find it.
Look here and the last resort.
What happened when you tried holding the "x" key during startup without the cd in? Did it just go to the question mark?

  • Why is there a question mark on my startup disk.

When I go to apple system preferences, there is a question mark on my startup disk. Why? and what should I do to resolve it.
I don't have any problem starting my ocmputer and using it.

    in the system pref.
the top line ... "Show all, Display, Sound, Network,
    Startup disk
my 'startup disk' has a question mark!
Right. That's fine. It's just telling you that you can click that icon to choose a different Startup Disk. That question mark is part of the icon for that preference pane.
I click on it and I get a"select the system.."
It shows my Mac OS 10.3.9 and Network Startup which
    has a question mark
    I do have OS selected.
    and question mark on Network.
    Is that correct?
    Correct.
Now, where do I go to see my startup items?
Click on "Show All" in the System Preferences. Then Accounts down in the System section. Choose your account in the list at the left hand side, then choose the "Startup Items" tab on the right.
To remove an app from that list, select it and use the "-" button below. Unchecking it just means that if the application has a window, it'll be hidden at startup.
    Thanks for all your help.
    You're welcome.
    cheers,
    charlie

You need to use the computer's install disks to repair the hard drive or install a new OS.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.
