That USB/Firewire question again

OK, I've done my research, no converter exists.
Just bought my fiance a 60gb iPod to replace his old white one which had died. But he has been keeping his music on our old blue G3, and both its USB ports are occupied - keyboard and external hard drive with the music on it. So, question is, how on earth do we free up a USB port?
We have a PC and installed iTunes on it, but music imported through this is of very poor quality, with frequent clicks on playback. Anyone else experienced this?
Thought I'd come up with a great birthday present, and am now feeling rather defeated. Maybe the only solution is for him to keep his music on my iMac? But it was handy having a computer each...

So, question is, how on earth do we free up a USB port?
Just purchase a USB hub, which basically turns one USB port into many USB ports. A "splitter" of sorts.
They're very inexpensive and you can pick up a USB hub at just about any electronics or computer retailer.
Something like this one would work just fine. I've even seen them less expensive than this one.

Usb/Firewire question

Ive had my ipod mini for about 4 months and for 2 of these months i had a completely blissfull relationship with it. One day i plugged it in to charge it and all was fine and dandy untill about 20 minutes later when it suddenly stopped charging and wasn't recognised my by computer. Over the next 2 days when i plugged it in nothing happened and on the 4th day the same thing happened as the first day.
Having read though this board and trying all suggestions i could find not helping, i gave up and ordered a firewire card which i'm currently waiting on.
However, i have noticed now that if i plug my ipod in it actually charges, despite the screen being blank and my usb not recognising that anything is plugged into it.
Because of this i was wondering if a firewire card will actually help, i'm hoping it will but i would like to be reassured about this. While its all fine and dandy that my ipod will actually charge, i can't actually do anything to it, i can't use itunes and i can't restore it.
Any answer to this would be greatly appreciated.

No.

Yes, but expensive as this means, basically, replacing the entire Logic board.
If your iMac is older and no longer covered under AppleCare, it's not worth the cost.
Other options?
If your iMac has Bluetooth, use Bluetooth keyboards and mice. Purchase external FireWire peripherals instead of USB ones.
WiFi printers.
Possibly consider new or newer iMac as replacement.

Question about USB & Firewire cards

For years we've been used to the Mac way of combining USB and/or firewire ports on to one bus. Plug in a slower device and the other faster devices on SEPARATE ports may slow down to the slower speed (depending on your Mac model, configuration, etc.).
I am looking at PCI cards for USB, firewire, and esata and non of them I've seen mention this. Is it safe to assume that most of them truly have an individual bus per port? In other words, if I plug a slower device into one port, will the other ports generally continue to operate at higher speeds? For instance, if a card has three FW 800 ports, but I plug a 400 device into one of them, will the other two continue to operate at 800 speeds?
Anyone have any recommendations for a good USB & Firewire 800 & 400 card that will negotiate speed per port like I am asking?

It's not a good assumption. Read the adapter's complete specifications carefully, or if you already have the adapter, you can look at the system profiler to see how many separate buses it has.

That SSID Question Again

The question is not "how do I do it" - because I know the answer to that.
The question is "why is it so difficult to find the answer?"
Just in case anyone is struggling, this is how to do it with OSX 10.9 and an HP Photosmart C4380:
1) Reset wireless settings on the printer (see manual for how to do that).
2) Print the network configuration settings now you have reset them; they should tell you it is in ad-hoc network mode and they should tell you the "URL" and the wireless network name. Mine was "hpsetup". You will need that in a moment.
3) With the controlling computer, join the ad-hoc network using your wireless settings - I am guessing you know how to join different wireless networks with your computer.
4) Open the URL from step 2 in a web browser. You are now in control of the printer.
5) Under "Networking" go to the "Advanced" tab. Enter the SSID you want to use, select "infrastructure" and enter the WEP key or whatever is appropriate for your network.
6) Note that when you press "Apply", the printer changes the nwtwork to which it is connected. That means the page you're looking at appears to crash. Which technically it has, as the server just disappeared from your computer's universe. Don't worry.
7) Print the network configuration settings again and check it has in fact joined your network of choice. If it hasn't, go back to step 1. Nothing else will do - you must go back to step 1 and try again.
8) Presuming you were successful in step 7, rejoin the main network with your computer.
9) Add the newly connected printer to the list of available printers, since it has now become visible. Again I am presuming you know how to do that, but if you don't there are many versions of instructions for that available on Google.
So again, I repeat my question. Why was it so difficult to get instructions on that little dance involving reset - ad-hoc network - enter information - apply? Changing SSID for your home network is very common.

Usb + firewire issues = kernel panic - help needed!!

Hello, and please forgive my english, I'll do my best!
So, i have a 1,25 Ghz MDD G4, with 2 x 256 Mo RAM sticks (at first), running mac OS 10.3.9.
As the original HD is too small, I work with my documents on an external firewire HD. The HD is plugged on a third party/PCI firwire card that went down.
On the same day I bought a new firewire card (trendNet, it was said to be mac compatible form mac OS 8.6) and 4 x 512 Mo of Ram (Hynix).
It worked just fine for a week and suddenly my mouse froze (and keyboard too > the mouse is plugged on the keyboard). Having no control on my mac (which seemed ok despite the usb deconnection) I had to hard reboot on the central Unit.
I unplugged the usb hub that occupied mu 2nd usb port (there was a wacom tablet and a flsh memory key on it). I left just the keyboard plugged (and mouse plugged on keyboard).
It was fine for... 2 or 3 hours and then it started again > mouse + keyboard deconnecting/freezing (the keyboard is a mac one, the mouse a microsoft one -optical-).
As the small red optical light of the mouse turns off when the mouse freezes I first thought the mouse or keyboard itself was the culprit.
I tested both of them them on a macbook and they worked just fine (never had a problem with them).
I ran disk utility, repaired the permissions. And it seemed better for a couple of hours.
When it happened again I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it on the 2nd usb port (which was free since I had unplugged everything else) > the mouse "came back to life" and I didn't have to reboot. But it happened again, like 2-3 times (every hour/half hour) until swapping the usb plug on the UC doesn't solve the problem anymore > hard reboot again...
Then I tried EVERYTHING
booting with techtool CD > everything ok, no pb found
running onyx to empty the cash and rerepair the permissions > ibid, no pb
resetting the PRAM with cmd-alt-p-r
resetting the PMU
resetting the usb and firewire ports after each hard reboot
cleaning the dust
removing my old scsi pci card (not used for ages)
moving my new firewire card on an another slot
installing a firmware update
nothing has solved the problem... it seems to arrive randomly, but mostly (more frequently) when working with several apps open.
The cursor seems to freeze for very very short periods (as a warning!) until it freezes for good > it's exactly as if the usb didn't deliver any electricity for micro laps of time (and it is the case I guess as my optical mouse light turns off).
So I change the usb plug into the other port and it works for a while, just as if only one usb port was functional at a time, but it always ends with a hard reboot (no choice).
It's always scary but it's also very annoying as my Western Digital Mybook external drive refuses to mount on desktop after hard reboots... I have to unplug it, replug it, restart etc... well this HD is a pain but I guess it's because it's in FAT 32 (since I forgot to format it when I bought it). So I don't bother too much about the HD itself, but however it seems that the firewire card suffers from this : I have a lot of trouble mounting 2 disks at a time (but with all this I need to backup!). It's like the fiwewire ports (of the pci card) suffered from the same pain as the usb : one at the time! and when I finally mount both external HDs, if I unplug one (after unmounting it and switching it off) the computer freezes.
Then one day I opened itunes, and... kernel panic...
That was 4 days ago I think and I've had like 3-4 KP since then (one a day). These kernel panic happen just as randomly as my usb deconnexions...
Today I tried my last chance : removing the new Hynix ram and putting back my 2 old 256 rams.
It was ok for a pair of hours and then > mouse freeze and kernel panic again...
I reaaally need help, I don't know what to do anymore. I've spent my last week unplugging usb plugs, opening my UC, repairing permissions etc...
now I feel helpless...

The problems with the card at startup are probably creating an unstable condition, which in turn is causing kernel panics later on.
Basic things first, whenever you change the hardware setup, e.g. RAM and adding cards, it's a really good idea to reset-PRAM. Did you do that? Try that first, it's simple and easy enough to try.
If resetting the PRAM doesn't help, then try the new PCI card. I re-read your post a few times, but I haven't seen whether you tried removing the PCI FW/USB card to see if that helps. Try your mouse and some other devises on the native USB and FW ports. If you're stable, then it very well could be the card.
Of course there's also the question of the RAM, which you pulled without help. Again, after any change of the hardware (adding RAM, pulling RAM, adding/pulling cards, etc.) even during testing, reset the PRAM at startup.
With new RAM it's usually a good idea to test it, with say AHT CD or Rember. If you test, you might want to do this without the new card. It's a little tricky right now because you added 2 new pieces of HW (RAM and FW/USB card) either which or both could cause the problems you're seeing. OS X is picky about RAM, and the MDDs in particular are extremely picky about RAM as far as Apple HW is concerned.
Lots of kernel panics can eventually cause damage to the OS X installation. So in the end, it may be worth re-installing. But, before you take that route. Try the simple things like removing the PCI FW/USB card & testing, and testing the RAM. Take it one step at a time.

USB/FireWire Ports Issue

So before I go into the apple store and ask for this computer to be repaired/replaced, I would like to see if anyone knows if something can be done about this issue I have pinpointed..
Basically when I have more than a few USB/FireWire ports connected, one or more of the devices does not function properly. This has happened with two external hard drives - which should have no problem being connected simultaneously.. When I try to eject one of them, I receive a message stating that it cannot be ejected because one or more programs may be using it.. although all programs are closed, causing me to have to force eject..
Also, I plug in one drive and open the other in finder to back it up, and all of the folders in the drive are suddenly empty.. nothing inside. I go to Get Info.. Zero KB.. I try ejecting, but receive the same message, so I force eject, plug it back in, and wala, all the files are back in the right place..
This has also happened in the past when my cinema display and a printer were plugged in simultaneously.. the computer won't detect the USB of the cinema display -- which only means that the speakers of the display won't work + no brightness control from the keyboard.. so i let it slide.. but now with this external hard drive issue, i need to solve the problem..

Same here. Since a few weeks, my MacPro ejects USB HDD's as soon as I write or read data on it.
(no I haven't installed something new at this time and all HUB's and HDD's have their own power supply, and yes they have been exchanged, so its not a broken cable or so !!!!!!!!)
After a reset of the NVRAM and PRAM its better for an hour or so, then starts to eject again. I've seen a lot of communities with exact the same question, but never a solution for it. There is also nothing in the support tab of apple.
Hope someone here can help me out or due to the fact that this is a AplleSupportCommunity, a Apple-Employee may starts to do his job and help this huge amount (I guess there are hundrets or tousand) of mac-user with exact the same problem....
btw: don't agree with MACATTACK2010 that this is a hardware problem, cause there are a lot of people in the
net that ask the same question with brandnew Hardware. I think it's an OS or an Update Bug, or may both.

Please Help! - Cannot Access Or See External USB/Firewire Drive

Can anyone help or advise me as I’m really at a loss as how to fix a problem I have with my external hard drive and OX 10.4.6.
I had just completed a fresh install of OS X on my PowerPC iMac G5 using the “Erase & Install” feature.
Everything had gone extremely well, all my applications and settings had been re-set as I normally have them (I made backups) and was able to access my external hard disk, which is a Maxtor OneTouch USB/FireWire 250 GB model.
I then setup a second account for my brother, which I setup as a “Standard” account.
When I then went to access some of the files on my external disk and tried to copy them over to my Desktop, it refused me permission and said that I had to ask the permission of the “Owner’ which it said was Steve (my Brother) which was strange because as I said his account was only setup as a standard account whereas I had an administrator account (and am the main user of the computer).
I went into the Steve's account and looked at the Permissions information using the “Get Info” dialogue box. This showed that the owner was indeed Steve, so I changed it to my Name (Andrew) went back to my account, and found could no longer see the external disk at all.
Returning to Steve’s account I checked the permissions again, and asked it to ignore permissions.
But now I cannot see or access the disk at all in either account, it just does not show up on the desktop or in the Finder Sidebar.
The strange thing is I can see it in “Disk Utility” but when I ask it to either verify or Repair the Disk permissions, it reports that they are all or OK and “no repairs were necessary”.
I have tried connecting the disk with both types of connection - USB2 and the Firewire drive, and the results are exactly the same, the drive is not visible on the Desktop or the Finder Sidebar, but is visible to Disk Utility.
The disk is formatted as a ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive
Can anyone please tell me how I can get my external disk to show on my computer again, as ALL my backup documents and programs are on the disk, and most of the data cannot be replaced.
Would doing a complete fresh install of the OS X operating system fix this as a last resort?
I hope someone can advise, as I really am desperate.

Yes, I didn't think it was very good either!
You are correct in I should have said "Repair Disk" - Verify Permissions is not available on the maxtor drive ( it is dimmed) in Repair Disk.
Until now, the drive has worked perfectly, and I did not install any of Maxtors software when I originally connected the drive to this system, I just formatted it as a Mac Extended and it worked great. It was only after the fresh Erase & Install - even then it worked fine. It was only when I created a new account that the problem started.
What I have done is get hold of a demo version of a program called "Mac Drive 6" which allows you to read any Mac formatted disk or drive on a Windows system, - fortunately i still have my Windows XP Pro system which I have also connected to my home network.
So for the next four days (the length of the demo) I can access all of my files on the disk and copy them to my Windows system.
This is really great because I have all my data and images back which were my biggest concern.
I thought I might get another drive anyhow, and when I have everything backed up on a new drive and on the Windows system, I can then reformat the Maxtor drive and start afresh with it.

This has probably been covered before and I didn't find it. So I apologize...
I bought the new Airport Extreme and a firewire/usb combo hub so that I could connect my external HDs (3 are firewire and 1 is USB) - the USB is the only one that is working....
Any Ideas? (Besides putting the Firewire back on the desk top and sucking it up!)

I have a related question. I want to buy a triple interface drive (ethernet, USB, Firewire). The plan is to connect the drive an ethernet port on an Airport Extreme. The question is - can I later 'daisychain' on an additional firewire drive?
So the first drive would be connected via ethernet and the second connected to the first via firewire.
Based on Niel's post, I am guessing this won't work. Comments?
Also, are there certain brands that are known to play particularly nicely with Leopard when hooked up as ethernet network drives?

Iomega eGo 2TB USB/Firewire 800 drive not working with Time Machine.

The drive I had for Time Machine died and I replaced it with an iomega eGo 2 TB USB/Firewire 800 drive. Time Machine finds it and backs up the disk when I first boot up but then it seems like the drive goes off line. At that point, when Time Machine tires to back up it can't get the drive to respond and my system hangs. To fix that, I turn off the iomega that fixes the hang up and I get the disconnect without ejecting warning.
I ran disk utility and disk warrior. Both apps reported the disk is fine.
Can any tell me what's up? I'm running OS X 10.7.2

I am having this exact same error with my new iMac 21.5" connected to a brand new Iomega eGo 2 TB Desktop Firewire 800 External Hard Drive (Mac Edition - 34796).
The TimeMachine backup works fine, but as soon as the iMac goes to sleep and wakes back up, TimeMachine doesn't respond well to any commands and all sorts of errors appear on the screen.
I will try the tip here from Kappy and report back later if this works for me.
Kappy, one thing to note is that I'm using the Firewire connection from the iMac to the eGo and experiencing this problem. The eGo has its own power supply too.

IMac G5 firewire question.

I was wondering is there a reson that when I turn off my iMac G5. That my firewire harddrive,DVD burner and other firewire devises are still powered on and have not turned off along with my iMac G5. Also I have a Canupos 110 video converter box that is or should be turing off when I turn off my computer also. I did e-mail the tech help people for my Canupos 110 and they tell me it should be turing off along with my computer and that I should make shour that my iMac is turned off and not sleeping or hibernatting but I know the iMac is turned off.Thanks.

You know its fuuny you should talk about Lacie You know all of my ext. firewire DVD burners,Harddrive are from Lacie and I got the DVD burner with my Imac G5 Christmas along with other hardware for my computer. I got it all at the Apple store. Now I do know that my harddrive will turn its motor off and it sounds like it shuts down. But the blue light is still on on my ext. firewire harddrive. Also the blue light on my DVD burner dose the same thing but only on my Mac as dose the Canupos 110. But on the other hand it was not so with my PC when I used them with it. Everything from the motor to the lights all turned off along with the PC. But with my Powerbook G4 and now my iMac G5 the lights and sound steel stay on on my Mac's. Now I have got us to them being on but. One day I got to thinking to myself is this right is this safe. Why dose my PC turn them off when my Mac's keep them on. Why would Apple have done this what would be the purpes of this but. From that day on I have been on a qwest to find the reson for this. If nothing more then finding out I have to unplug them I would be happy. Though thats a big hassle to do all the time day in and day out to have to hook and rehook all the time. But If thats what I have to do I will. But you know it would be nice to know why this is. Some were I read and for the life of me I can not seem to find it again. But I read some were about the Apple computers having a always on firewire ports. Now weather this is true or not I do not know. Now I have e-mailed Apple and Canupos about this and from Apple I get. You will just have to unhook them when your done to they do not no about other products that come from difrent places even though they sell them in there stores. Now from Canupos I get info back some what the same about you will just have to unplug them after your done using them. But then I got anther e-mail from Canupos telling me that your Canupos 110 should be turning off when the IMac G5 is turned off. But they just can not seem to tell me why this is. If you have music that was purchased on different iTunes accounts than the one you use, then you must provide the password, otherwise the tunes are not considered yours. You can turn off iCloud and just use the usual USB sync method. But I wonder whether you'll have the same problem?

Solaris 10 x86 USB/Firewire Installation

I tried to install Solaris 10 x86 01/06 edition on an external hard disk.
The connection is via USB in one case and via Firewire in the other case. In both cases, when the installation devices appear for selection and partitioning, the external hard disk does not appear in the panel.
So, is there any method how to get the Solaris system installed on the external disk. Maybe, there is a method by installing Solaris on an internal hard disk first and then copying it onto the external disk?

Have you had any luck getting this to work.
I am attempting an install on a laptop (Dell Latitude D800). I removed the internal drive so all that was available was the USB drive. The drive is recognized, and everything went well through the first portion of the install. However, upon the first reboot, during the install, the reboot fails.
I then searched these forums (should have done that 1st) and it appears that booting from external drives is not possible in Solaris 10 x86.
Does anyone know if anything in the latest release of Solaris 10 (i.e. 06/06) has corrected/enabled USB/firewire booting?

Mount USB/Firewire drive from shell or cron job

Is there a way to mount a USB/Firewire drive from the shell or possibly mount it using a cron job? Here's the situation. I have a user that keeps all of her data on her desktop or in her Documents folder. I have attached a firewire drive to her PowerMac G5 (OS 10.4.6) and successfully created cron jobs to backup her entire user folder every night. The problem is that she logs off of her computer before she leaves work. When she logs of the firewire drive unmounts and the cron job fails because it cannot find the drive. I was hoping there was a way to mount the drive using a script so that it will mount, let the cron job run, and then possibly unmount the drive afterwards. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

You may need to add u and/or w to the command after the a without any additional spaces for the mount to work properly.

Networking a USB/Firewire Drive

I have a USB/Firewire hard drive from Western Digital which I use to backup my PowerBook. I would like to connect this directly to my network so I can use it to backup other machines.
I know that the USB cannot be connected to the USB port on the Airport Extreme Base Station. D-Link sell a Network Storage Enclosure call the DSM-G600 which reports to allow you to connect a USB drive to it an use Bonjour to access it.
Has any done this or got an suggestions of alternatives. I ask as I have purchase D-Link kit before and been disappointed by it.
