The 10.5.1 to 10.5.5 slow down

Hello everyone I haven't been here in a while.
The computer: Mac Mini Late 2005 pre Intel
The issue: When i upgraded to 10.5.1 i was happy because my computer was faster in Leopard than it was in Tiger but after a few updates its now gotten really slow especially at startup which can take up to 10 minutes. I have fixed permissions, no effect. I have tried OnyX but it didn't really help but i tried that several months ago so things might have changed since then. Does anyone know what i need to do to get my startup time down? Btw where did my Startup Window go? xD

for some reason it is giving me a hard time answering this as solved.
So lets recap:
What needed to be fixed:
1. (org.postfix.master) Failed to count the number of files in "/var/spool/postfix/maildrop": No such file or directory
sudo mkdir /var/spool/postfix
<password>
sudo postfix stop
sudo postfix start

  • I downloaded the Apple update yesterday and my computer has slowed down plus I can't move emails to my different mailboxes.

Why has my computer slowed down?  I downloaded the update yesterday and since then the color wheel keeps circling and I can't download or move emails to my different mailboxes.  There is no consistent patern in which emails can be transferred.  There is a consistent patern with the color wheel coming on while I am typing and stoping the recording of the keys.

  • When more than two tabs are open (no matter the content), FireFox (3.6 and 4.0) slows down and the CPU usage value on the Task Manager shoots up to 100%.

The Memory usage also shoots up to about 475k MB. This has happened over two computers, the first being a stock Dell Inspiron 1620 with Windows XP and this one being a stock HP G72 with Windows 7. I used a data transfer cable to transfer all settings from the first computer to this computer. The problem persisted through 2 updates (3.5>3.6>4.0). The only FF add-ons I have downloaded are NoScript and AdBlocker; I also have several unused toolbars downloaded from various other applications (Yahoo, Norton, and AVG) and frequently use the Google toolbar, which in an unrelated matter stopped saving my searches or suggesting searches while typing at the 4.0 upgrade. If you need any more information, I'd be happy to post it.

Try a new Profile in Firefox 4 and see how it is. <br />

  • The spinning beach ball - why has my MacBook slowed down SO much?

My MacBook has become terribly slow. I get the spinning beachball almost every time I hit a key now, and I am just about ready to throw everything out the window. Mainly I use my laptop for internet browsing (Safari only), iTunes and iPhoto. I do have third party stuff on my computer such as the software for my Nike Fuelband, and Jawbone Updater for my Jambox. I have Java too, which I probaby don't need. Oh I also have some card games - but those sorts of things I get from the App Store. I don't muck around with settings or anything, because I don't know anything about that! I just USE my laptop. So having said that, I don't know why I would have the spinning beachball as my new sidekick....
I have followed instructions I found on another discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5303293?start=0&tstart=0) to test my MacBook. My results are good news I think: Logging in as a guest account, everything runs like I would hope - iTunes opens up quickly, same with iPhoto, and when I look up sites on Safari they load up quickly. I then started in safe mode, and logged in as myself. Excusing the "stuttering" of the graphics and such, I would say that in safe mode things moved along much more quickly. I got the beachball in safe mode but not every time I tried opening something, and only briefly when it did appear.
My question is, where do I go from here? How do I "clean up" or fix my MacBook so that it runs like it used to? Like I say, I think it must be good news that in those test scenarios my MacBook performs much more like the good old days. Does this suggest that my own account just has crap on it that needs to go? And if so, the big question is, how on earth would I go about identifying the source(s) of the problem and then getting rid of them?
I have searched some on the forums here but I'm at a bit of a loss because I don't really even know what to search for! As I say, I am a complete user only! I do follow instructions pretty well though, so if anyone could point me to the right help page or give me further advice, I would be oh-so-grateful!
    cheers,
    Lydia

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as certain other aspects of the configuration that may have a bearing on the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode, if possible. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable text output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    P=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; E () { [ "$o" ] && echo $'\n'$1: && echo "$o"; }; F () { o=$($P -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); E "$1"; }; { o=$(kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'); E "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); E "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); E "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); E "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); E "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); E "Per-user launchd configuration"; F "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginwindow.plist Path; F "Per-user login items" L*/P*/com.apple.loginitems.plist Path; F "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); [ "$o" == 0 ] || printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $o; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do $P -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist" | egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" && echo ${d%/Contents}; done); E "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); E "Unsigned shared libraries"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); E "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    E () { [ "$o" ] && echo $'\n'$1: && echo "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'); E "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); E "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); E "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); E "Log check"; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — no typing is involved, apart from your password. Also remember to post the output.

  • Does the most recent OS X v10.6 update slow down your computer?

When I first upgraded to Snow Leopard, it felt like Christmas: I got disk space back and my Mac seemed faster and more responsive.
But after I installed the latest updates (I believe it was OS X v10.6.2 and a firmware upgrade), things have not been so rosy:
    - there is a noticeable delay when I modify the volume via keyboard keys, this used to instantaneous, now it's like a 1 second lag
    - switching applications takes longer, balking at the animation of switching between spaces
    - apps in Fusion jam up much more frequently
As far as I can tell, my usage patterns haven't changed at all, and I really did start noticing it from my first use of new updates.
Is anyone else experiencing something similar? I'm not too sure how to diagnose and fix this. It's too bad, because I was really enjoying the performance improvements from Snow Leopard, and now the responsiveness benefit seems gone.

Here are some fixes for general slowness that have worked for others. Ignore any you already have tried and any you don't want to try. Try the possible fixes in the order you prefer.
    1. If you are running iAntivirus, then uninstall it.
    2. Try [resetting your PRAM/NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US]. If everything isn't fixed, then follow the [steps here including resetting your SMC if necessary|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543].
    3. Look in User > Library > StartupItems and in System > Library > StartupItems. Move whatever you find in them to the desktop to see if your problem is resolved. You can move whatever you want back one at a time to test which, if any, is your problem.
    4. Use [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] to repair your user preferences.
    5.
    a. Create a new user
    b. Test apps to see that they work with no crashing.
    c. Drag your data and other needed things (e.g., mail) (not your whole home folder) into their proper places in your new user home folder. Use [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to know what to drag.
    d. Re-enter your app preferences if you are going to keep using the new user.
    e. If you want to use the old user name, then delete the old account; recreate it; and move everything back to the original locations.
    f. You will need to fix the permissions, app settings, etc.
    6. Go back to 10.6. You can do so simply by reinstalling Snow over Snow as in doing an upgrade install.
    7. Reinstall .6.1 and .6.2 using [only the combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959].

  • How to: The Mix Effect of a vinyl record quick slow down to stop.

Here's an interesting question (to me anyway :))...
One of my Mixes is screaming out for an effect like this.
The same as if a DJ would take a vinyl record and slow it down to a stop.
Has anyone done this in Logic before? My first thought was to use a master tempo on a bus, and all tracks assigned to it.
I was toying around with this last night and it just wasn't right.
    Any thoughts are much appreciated..
    Adam

Also at the Arrange window you can click on View>Global Tracks and then View>Global Tracks components>tempo
There you can draw any tempo changes you want your track to have to speed it up or slow it down.
    Hope this helps

  • Norton anti-virus slows down the start up time in Windows Vista

    Hi,
please help, i am being driven to distraction by the slow start up time of my laptop.
I've only had it for a few weeks and don't use it for anything beyond producing word documents etc.
It has gradually been getting slower on startup and i suspect it has something to do with the Norton anti-virus software on it and the updates for norton that i have downloaded (thinking that this was the right thing to do).
Looking at the problems and solutions log on the computer the date that it really started to slow down coincides with downloading a norton update, which i have been unable to uninstall to check if this really is the problem.
Further i have tried doing a System Restore, my laptop was not able to complete.
I am stuck on the DOS screen for 10 mins with the message:
    PXE-E32 FTFP open timeout
I have no idea what this means but the Problems and Solutions log says something about a system hang?
I have looked on the web for other anti-virus software and they all seem to have one problem or another and slow computers down on startup.
Does anyone know of a solution or do i just have to make a cup of tea when i switch my computer on and lace it with vodka till it has booted up completely!
I am a novice when it comes to using computers so would welcome any non-technical advice.
    thanks

    Hi guys
I would like to add some words about my experience using the Symantec Norton Antivirus software.
I have used this software 3 year long. It was great because it supports one of the best virus filtering options BUT it really slow downs the operating system.
I didnt use it on with Vista preinstalled notebook but on Win XP and I have to say that the notebook boot process was halted for about 30sec-1min till the whole parts of Norton Antivirus software has started It was very annoying
However, I switched to AntiVir. This is software described by marina4000 and Im really happy because the boot performance increased.
So finally I would also recommend removing this Symantec Norton Antivirus software and to switch to the other free AntiVir software ;)
    Bye

  • Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?

Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; I get the "end program" message and have to say "end now"it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?
    - I've used Firefox exclusively for around 2 years.
    - My outlook express has no problems
    - other programs seem unaffected; it seems peculiar to Firefox.
    - my main use is surfing the net, primarily entering competitions on line via specialist competition sites.
    - every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

Sounds like something is keeping Firefox from closing properly. See this: <br />

  • How to get the values returned by a function in a drop down?

    Hi All,
Can anyone please help in getting the values returned by a function into a drop down? I have a java class file where in i have written a function called getWeeks() which give all the week dates and i want to display these week dates in a drop down box in a JSP page.
Please help me in this regard.
    Thanks in Advance!!
    Lakshman.

    Hi Lakshman,
the following code can help you do what you want :
    <hbj:dropdownListBox id="calendar" tooltip="Calendar" selection="<%= selected %>">
    <%
    String[] weeks = myObjectBean.getWeeks();
    for (int i = 0; i < weeks.length; i++) {
    %>
         <hbj:listBoxItem key="<%= i %>" value="<%= weeks<i> %>"/>
    <%
    %>
    </hbj: dropdownListBox>
The <%= selected %> snippet allows you to pre-select one of the options (provided that the variable 'selected' is equal to one of the listBoxItem keys).
You can also add onSelect to the tag (e.g. = "setSelectedItem"). It corresponds to a method in the corresponding JSPDynPage class. This means that when you select another item in the dropdown list, the method in your Java class is performed (allowing you to save the selected value and performing actions with it)
I hope this helped you enough,
    kind regards,
    Frederic
Edited seven times by: Frederic Taes on Nov 5, 2008 11:24 AM -> the onSelect element was in the hbj tag and in the text with "='setSelectedItem'" next to it and when I tried to post my message, I got a 501 error all the time ! Seems like a SDN bug to me ...

I recently bought, from the original website of Adobe, Photoshop elements 13. However, when I go with my mouse pointer over the menu, It hangs or he works very slow. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix it? I have already downloaded updates, both from Adobe and Windows. I have a new pc with window 8.1.

It could be a coincidence, but I rebooted the machine and (knock on wood) PSE13 seems to be working ok.

The new iMacs do not come with a MiniDisplayPort, they have Thunderbolt, so unless you are talking about purchasing one of the previous generation iMacs such as this refurbished model in the online Apple store, it won't work. And yes, if you are going to get the full range of video resolutions you will need the Dual-Link version.
For details see the store's web page on the Dual-Link display adapter.

  • My browser takes minutes to open then when the tab is fully loaded it will start saying "Connecting" and slow down or freeze.

When I open my browser, it takes 3-5 minutes to fully open. When I get to a website, randomly the tab will say 'Connecting' and slow down and take 10-15 minutes to function or freeze completely. This almost always happens on sites that require Flash Player use. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my Flash several times. I've added memory, as someone suggested it was a memory issue. It's so frustrating, please help!

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.
