  • DO NOT user the 2006-01-10 Updater on Windows XP

I tried running the 2006-01-10 Updater on my XP machine and it wreaked havoc with my system AND my iPod.
First running just "Update", and NOT "Restore", yes I made absolutely sure, wiped all of my data off of my 20GB iPod. Then when I tried to restore my data, iTunes (6.0.2.23) wouldn't start, after looking at the crash log I found that Quicktime had gotten corrupted.
I ended up having to uninstall iTunes, reboot, reinstall iTunes and use the 2005-09-06 Updater to get everything working again.
    To the Apple guys:
You guys are doing a great job, but even the best of us goof once in awhile. This updater has some pretty serious problems.

I think you might have something here.
I downloaded the 2006-01-10 updater over the weekend and installed it, at the same time I was also changing my PCs power supply to a more powerful one.
After I'd swapped it over I tried plugging in my LaCie D2 Extreme 250GB external hard disk (using FireWire) but nothing happened.
Well, the light came on but Windows didn't connect to it.
So I tried it over USB 2.0 and it worked!
Then I tried my iPod Mini, exactly the same problem, power is going to the devices (my iPod gets charged) but no communication occurs.
At first I thought it might have been something to do with the fact I'd switched my PSU, now I'm not so sure. See my troubleshooting thread here:
    http://forums.kustompcs.co.uk/showthread.php?t=35034
Odd thing is, my work PC doesn't have the 2006-01-10 updater on it and neither devices work over FireWire on that now (did before the weekend).
But also interesting is the fact that neither work (over FireWire) on the G4 we have in the office (latest version of OS X, and updates are told to happen automatically, so I guess the 2006-01-10 updater is on that too).
I did a diagnostic test on my iPod and it confirms something wrong with the FireWire, here are the results:
    Connection
    Rate=s100 ERROR
    FW Chip OK
    Firewire OK
So, the chip isn't fried (which was my worry) but something low-level has been messed with, as a result of this 2006-01-10 updater by the looks of it.
Gonna try un-installing iTunes, putting the old updater on (if I can find it) and formatting both my iPod and the LaCie drive (got the data off using USB 2.0)
Quesiton is, do these devices store some FireWire settings that causes them to stop working on machines that don't have the possibly offending 2006-01-10 updater on?
    Cheers
    Matt

  • Trouble with the 2006-06-28 updater also.

This is my second ipod after my old one went dumb. Anyway, this is my second time updating my ipod and I updated the latest version of itunes. 6.0.5 and it works perfectly. I also downloaded the newest ipod updater. 2006-06-28. So, I plug my ipod in and click on the updater thing and it gives me the error: "Ipod service error" WHAT ON EARTH DOES THAT MEAN??? This is a totally new ipod and it's not updating. Ok, so, then I open itunes and it says: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall itunes to install the ipod's software." So, I reinstall itunes again. five times to be exact. Does anyone know what's wrong with this thing? HELP ME PLEASE!!! thanks!

not to sound like a d*ck, but if you get an error
message, its more then likely on the website. Apple
acknoledges the problem and created this document. It explaines steps to work
thru to resolve the issue. Try it and see if it
works... the error means there is a software conflict
with the ipod service. it happens.
I have been to "this document" followed all of the steps as well as the 43 steps to uninstall itunes/ipod completely, nothing seems to work so far. Turned off virus protection, viewed hidden files, installed, reinstalled...blah, blah, blah. There have been so many problems on the message boards that itunes needs to do another update and correct these issues. This is my third ipod so I am not new to their software updates, but this 5th generation is somewhat of a disappointment.
Some of you guys have been lucky enough to do the updates and have your ipods noticed by the itunes software, be thankful, for there is always a next time and it may just be your turn to be as frustrated as the rest of us.

  • 2006-007 security update breaks 8192-bit certificates: certtool X509Anchors

Installing the 2006-007 security update has caused Keychain Access and certtool to be unable to use my 8192-bit certificates. This issue hit me severely as it has impacted my entire OS/X Server SSL configuration, including Open Directory and Server Admin.
I have OS/X 10.4.8 clients connected to a 10.4.8 server. All of my server certificates -- including Mail, Open Directory, Apache, and iChat -- are verified by a self-signed X.509 CA certificate with an 8192-bit key.
Now, suddenly, Keychain Access and certtool barf all over the 8192-bit key. In my X509Anchors, the certificate data is now listed as invalid ("Unable to display this certificate"):
    CSSMCLCertGetAllFields: CSPINVALID_ATTR_KEYLENGTH
OpenSSL 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 find it to be a valid certificate, and other applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc) have no problems.
Not only do Mail and Safari fail to function, I can no longer access the OS/X Server Admin. I now receive the error, "There is no server available at the address you entered. All services failed to access the address you provided for <server>. Check the address and try to log on again or contact your network administrator."
Some server certs have 4096- or 2048-bit keys. Certificates with 4096-bit keys or less are not a problem, but they all tie back to the 8192-bit CA cert.
Recreating and distributing new certs and chains to all client machines would be an administrative nightmare, and I'm not sure that I can change the Server certs and keys without access to Server Admin, anyway.
This is a huge problem, and I am stuck in the water. If anyone knows of a solution, or can get a response from Apple, please post it here!
    Thanks,
    dkallan

Update: since I never found a fix, I ultimately and reulctantly created new 4096-bit keys for everything, all the way back to a new CA cert. Has anyone had success with 8192-bit keys since the 2006-007 security update?

  • 2006-01-10 Updater Extreme Fix....Worked For Me....

I too am one of the poor shlobs that downloaded the latest and greatest ipod updater 2006-01-10 from everybodys favorite company..apple. I downloaded the 2006-01-10 updater on my wifes computer profile and her 3rd gen ipod stopped working with itunes but my computer profile still worked with my 4th gen ipod. So while trying to fix hers i too got the new update message on my itunes and not knowing any better i installed it. BIG MISTAKE!! Now my profile stopped reading my ipod in itunes. Error message said "The software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly please reinstall itunes to install the ipod software." So after many hours of grief trying to fix the problem to no avail heres what i did and it worked for me , its a little extreme but i was ready to put them both on ebay or the garbage can whichever was quicker and say the **** with apple. First you might want to save your music from itunes, i exported mine to a folder in my music and it showed back up in itunes when i was done. Go to apple, click on support tab, in ipod support area click on ipod + itunes support, scroll down troubleshooting articles, click on "my ipod shows up in windows but not in itunes", and follow each step for removing itunes and quicktime completely off computer. When it came to emptying my temp directory i could not delete the file so i went into the file and deleted everything that i could, some could not be removed. After removing itunes and quicktime i went to start-my computer-local disc-program files-ipod, clicked on ipod and deleted ipod updater 2006-01-10 file. Then i went to start-my computer-local disc-program files-and scrolled down towards the bottom of the page and deleted anything that said ipod updater or itunes updater or setup. I also did this exact thing up to now on my wifes profile as on my profile just to be certain that there was nothing left on either profile. I then ran disc cleanup and disc defragmenter in start-all programs-accesories-system tools. Restarted computer. I then went to www.soft32.com/download_121872.html and downloaded the ipod updater 2005-03-23. Restarted the computer,(I restarted my computer alot, i would do something and restart and do something else and so on). I then connected my ipod to the computer and clicked start-my computer-right clicked on ipod-clicked on format-started format process. Then i disassembled both ipods and unplugged the batteries for about five to ten minutes and then put them back together.(google "ipod battery replacement" for step by step detailed instructions on how to do this VERY EASY to do) Restart computer. Then on my profile i connected my ipod, clicked start-my computer-local disc-program files-ipod-clicked on 2005-03-23 ipod updater. Restart computer. Then i connected my ipod and downloaded the latest itunes and quicktime sofware and restarted computer again. Then after the restart, when all my programs were up and running, i connected my ipod and VOILA itunes popped up and read my ipod and updated it. i then logged off completely and logged in to my wifes profile and reformatted her ipod, restarted and installed ipod updater, i did not need to reinstall itunes or quicktime because it was already there from when i installed it on my profile. Restarted and when everything was up and running connected her ipod and YIPPEE. Removed both ipods, logged completely off both profiles and again i restarted the computer again...yes i know...after the restart i checked both profiles just to make sure they still read the ipod and they both work WOOHOO!!! I certainly hope this helps someone else because i was literally at the end of my rope and really did not care what happened to it, i think somewhere in there i even smacked it on the table a couple of times just to vent some frustration(some say doing that works too i dont know about that but boy it sure felt good). Anyway hope this helps i tried to remember everything i did step by step to the best of my knowledge and i dont guarantee this will work for you like i said...it worked for me...good luck.

just wanted to know if you still have any problems because sometimes the pod would work right after installation but the problem comes a few days after..but this is really helpful..will try to do this over the weekend

I have an earlier model imac, the 2006 24inch and im running mac os x 10.5.8, i want to update my system to the newest mountain lion, what should i do first?

    To clarify;
    Snow Leopard 10.6;
    Lion 10.7:
    Snow Leopard DVD:
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
When you've installed SL it will be 10.6.3. You need to update that to 10.6.8 with the combo installer from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Lion is only available by phone also - same number and they'll give you a download code to use in the Mac App Store.

  • N80 dies in the middle of Software update

I just started the process of software update.
After it identified the phone, and downloaded the large 70 something MB of update, it started the actual update of the phone... when I got an error that the phone can not be updated. I tried a few time...nothing.
the screen that was blank...styed blank.... and now I am unable to restart the phone...

My phone has the 4.0 firmware installed.

The nokia FAQ for europe states the following:
    15. Will the warranty be void if I update my phone software using Nokia Software Updater?
    No, it will not.
    and
    38. My phone "died" during an update, what should I do?
Take the phone to your nearest Nokia service center. If the phone is within its warranty period, Nokia will repair the phone under the usual warranty terms and conditions. If the phone is not within its warranty period, Nokia is not liable for any loss as defined within the End-User Software Agreement.
I do not know if this is the same for USA, but it would be crazy if it isn't. I think it's really weird a phone bought in another country cannot be repaired it the USA..after all, it's still a nokia. So they have to give you the service for it.
btw: I've flashed my phone to death too last friday :'(.
She's on her way to get repaired now (takes about 3 weeks)...they couldn't fix it directly at the NSC.Message Edited by distel on 05-Nov-2006

  • Why won't the iTunes directory listing update,  yet the subscriptions will?

In the iTunes music store podcast directory, the listing for my podcast says that the most recent podcast is 5 November 2006, even though the podcast has been weekly since (as well as 2 years before that!).
The subscription to the RSS feed through my iTunes automatically updates when a new podcast is released, so I can only assume that the podcast has a valid RSS feed, and that the problem lies elsewhere. That, and the fact we have thousands of listeners downloading each week! Additionally, through feed validator, the rss feed came back as validated.
I tried pinging the iTunes store, and the screen said it was successfully pinged. Nothing in the listing has changed. Some strange thing happened in 2006, when the iTunes store did update the listing, and it stopped as soon as it started again!
    Can anyone help?
    The rss feed is http://www.brasscast.com/feed/rss.xml
    Thanks
    Lucas

One of the main causes of a feed not updating is that it no longer validates. In this case though, everything I can think of checks out, including the category tag (which was unchanged from earlier versions).
Even without pinging the iTunes Store, a feed will at some stage be crawled and have the updated info added to the database.
Sorry I couldn't be of help, this is a mystery.

  • Any thoughts on the new Bluetooth Firmware Update?

First of all, happy 2006 to all.
I just downloaded and installed a Bluetooth Firmware Update upon running the Software Update utility. Right after I decided to see online what should I expect from it. According to Apple's post, such a download is not for our PB model.
Anyway, it's probably too soon to tell, but after brief testing I feel that at least the connection's kept at a larger distance. I hope to be right because sometimes the connection seems to be quite weak. I use my Bluetooth Sony Ericsson k700i as a remote control with many losses in the connection.
    George...

I too downloaded this updater via Software Update. Upon restart the Bluetooth Firmware Updater application launched and I proceed to try and install. After sitting there for about 10 minuntes I clicked the Quit button since it was not finding any device. It asked if I was sure I wanted to quit because the firmware was not updated yet. After quitting the updater, my powerbook's (1.5GHz 15" Aluminum) bluetooth is no longer available. The preference pane is gone, the menu bar item says "Bluetooth is unavailable".
I restarted, deleted all the bluetooth preferences, and still nothing. I now have bluetoothless powerbook.
If anyone has any additional suggestions, please let me know. I am going to try a few other things in the mean time (inlcuding zapping the PRAM).

  • ERROR MESSAGE: The IPOD cannot be updated.

Please help!! Have tried everything can think of including, resetting, retrying, restarting, reinstalling and restoring. ITunes automatically starts downloading when you connect but then only transfers the first 50 or so songs in the library, and then says update complete. When you ask it to then update the IPOD through file menu an error message comes up saying 'The IPOD cannot be updated, the disk could not be read from or written to.' There is no problem with the IPOD, because I have been able to update it via another PC, it just won't update via the laptop even though the ITunes has been set up on the laptop as the ITunes I want to use.

To all concerned: There is a new Apple Support Document regarding this error:

    Maybe this helps.

  • "All of the Playlists Selected for Updating No Longer Exist"

My family has 2 ipod shuffles. After purchasing a Nano recently, I inserted the cd that came with it. Apparently the existing iTunes software was removed and reinstalled. At any rate, the library still shows all the original songs, but when the Nano is plugged in, iTunes immediately gives a prompt stating "Songs on the iPod *** cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist." The library is there, the playlists that were there are there, and I can play the songs on my cpu. Is there anything I can do besides completely uninstalling everything and starting over?
