The 23¢ iPod Screen protection

I've been seeing a whole lot of hubbub in the news about people complaining their nano screens scratch very easily. I've been through a few cases myself, and eventually got sick of the extra bulk around my iPod. It didn't take me too long to develop better habits about carrying mine around, so that I wouldn't need the cases against impacts and scratches.
Then I thought about that screen. I knew I didn't want to take chances with it getting big scratches on it. So I came up with this idea.
You can buy screen protectors for PDA's and such, but they're ungodly expensive. Then I remembered that you can get vinyl at our local sewing supplies store, Joanne's. It comes in varying thickness, I chose the smallest since it was the most I thought I would need, and you can buy it off the 5'-wide roll by the 1/8 of a yard. With tax, the material ended up being around 23¢, less than a quarter!
It's easily cut to size with an exacto knife or a large pair of scissors, just be sure to make it around a millimeter larger than the screen. To put it on and have it adhere a bit, swab a little rubbing alcohol on the screen with a q-tip, then carefully place the vinyl on. Pushing down on the vinyl on the center, and then pulling out (without moving it) to get any air bubble out seems to form a sort of seal that makes it hold down to the screen, as if under tension.
If you don't ram the iPod into your pocket, it stays on for many many months. You get dozens of replacements for it from the piece your purchased (so the actual price is probably less than 1¢!) and it works amazingly well. You may not be able to shove your iPod nano into the change pocket of your jeans anymore, especially for those who wear their pants a little tight, but just dropping it in your front pocket has worked fine for me these last couple of years.
I will say that leaving you iPod in the sun in the car may make this screen protection shrink and peel off a bit, but you shouldn't be doing that to you iPod anyway, right? Hope this helps some people.

Sorry it's taken so long. I haven't had the time to upload some pics until just now.
Here's a shot where I've peeled up a corner of the vinyl so you can see it:
Screen Pic 1
It may look a bit dirty, but that's just because I haven't replaced the vinyl in about 4 months now, and I've grown accustomed to not having to be careful about the screen any more.
Here's a shot of the vinyl stock I've got:

It's reeeaaally thin, so please understand if it's hard to see.
If those links aren't working, let me know and I'll try and work around them.

    Hello sumiko7493,
You could try to work through the potential troubleshooting solutions provided in this extensive post by Mitch751 related to this issue. Otherwise, as he notes in the post, you will more than likely need to have your iPod serviced in order to gain full functionality again.

  • My Ipod touch just downloaded IO6 but when I press the music button it goes to an entirely white screen for about a minute then reverts to the main ipod screen.  I cannot access my music or podcasts.  Have restarted both.  What should I do?

Computer and Ipod have both been restarted.  Video has the same white screen problem.  THIS IS NOT THE WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH - just when I press the music or video button.

    - Try connecting to comutr and then try to restor.
    - If still white screen, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the reset and restore again.

  • Green line down the 120gig ipod screen

need a bit of help here. i didn't do anything with my ipod when suddenly this morning i saw a green line appear from the top to the bottom of the screen. how can i remove it?. any clue......

This is a problem with the screen. Eventually more lines will appear but that is because of those lines failing or one pixel on the line being stuck. It is like not something you caused and can only be fixed by replacement of the screen. You may perhaps try calling apple and seeing what they can do about it for you since applecare was so recent.

  • Can anything get rid of scratches on iPod screen

    Hi there
As there anything on the market that can polish scratches out of the colour iPod screen?
I thought of jeweller's rouge. Any ideas?

Depends on how big the scratches are. If you are talking about just the little tiny scratches you can try a commercial plastic poish and cleaner. These have mild abrasives followed by something that actually temporarily fills the scratches with something with a refractive index similar to the plastic, making them much less visible. In the US, Meguire's has a plastic cleaner and a plastic polish that can accomplish this.
If you are talking about a big scratch (like the piece of chicken wire that scratched mine... don't ask) you will have to sand the scratch out with a more aggressive abrasive, then follow with successively smaller grits until you get back to the gloss of the original screen. There are modeller's sandpapers available in grits like 1200 or 2400. Use them with water to keep the paper from clogging but obviously don't get water in the inner workings of the ipod. 3M also sells a line of automotive abrasive sheets down to 15 microns. They aslo sell an automotive finishing product called Finesse. It is a white paste and fairly aggressive but leaves a gloss finish after you've buffed it out. I would try the Finesse first and if your scratch is too big or deep then try the larger grits. I recommend trying this on a scrap piece of plexiglas before you do it on the iPod. Good luck.

  • WT310 Screen protection and dock question

I own the WT310 with pen accessory and although i'm very satisfied with it i have two questions
1 - Is it possible to remove the Anti-glare screen protection, as i prefer to have a brighten display and it seems to be just a thin removable layer, will it lead to a malfunction display ?
2 - Is it possible to use the Z10T-A keyboard dock on the WT310 model ?
    Many thanks

Yes, I think you can remove the protection foil and this should not affect the display functionality.
    > 2 - Is it possible to use the Z10T-A keyboard dock on the WT310 model?
The WT310 as well as Portege Z10t Ultrabook support the PA5105E-1PRP tablet dock.

Screen protectors are for protection against scratches, not for protection against the iPod being dropped. As to the case, you may wish to take this issue up with the case manufacturer, though again, most claim protection only against scratches and mars, not against being dropped. Either way, such damage is not covered by the devices. warranty.
As to cost, Apple does not repair iPods, but will replace the entire iPod for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here (as also mentioned by Limnos):
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/faq/
There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPod serviced by an unauthorized shop, all further warranty will be void.
    Regards.

  • The best screen protection

What would you all recommend for screen protection which will not distort the image, will not fall off, and does not use glue. I need to cover both a 4g and a 5g. Any suggestions. PLease respond with the brand you are using and why you like it.

I have a leather one that's pretty good. I went digging in my trash looking for the box or whatever but couldn't find it. All i know is that it covers the screen well will clear plastic, and the click wheel(its still easy to spin). The brand name is NE NeuElements. It also has a silky back, so it sorta cleans the silver metal on the back of your ipod.

  • Best screen protecter for iPod touch 5th generation?

What is the best screen protecter for the iPod Touch 5th generation?

Pretty much any of them made for an iPod 5 will protect the screen from scratches, it's more personal preference. I personally use a Survivor case by Griffin. It's a little bulky but it offers protection for the entire iPod not just the screen. The rubberized back and sides protect against drops and falls, (cracked screens) and the port covers keep muck and moisture out of the charging and headphone ports. I have beat the snot out of it and so far so good. Just note some cases are waterproof like the Survivor  (will keep most water off your iPod, spills, rain, snow) and some are watertight like Lifeproof Fre (drop it in the toilet-- happens more than you'd think-- or go swimming with it and it's still dry provided the seals are working). Check around, see what works for you. Hope this helps, Good luck.
