The advantages of Quicktime Pro?

As being new to a Mac, I was just wondering, what are the benefits from upgrading to Quicktime Pro? I understand it allows you to edit and create movies on the fly, but I plan on using iMovieHD once I get a good camera. What I was really wondering about, however, were certain specifics...
For instance, does it allow for better playback and if I were to purchase Pro, would I get a free upgrade to the next Quicktime Pro, or do I have to pay for that as well?

It doesn't make movie play any better than the basic program.
It does allow you to do many things that the basic program can't.
Some of which you have pointed out...
Here read this:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/mac.html
and this:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/tutorials.html
Since you going to get a camera and use iMovie it would be wise to get and worth every penny...$29. And can save you from some headaches down the road when your editing/compressing...

  • Quicktime pro editing vs iMovie HD editing....?

I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to Quicktime Pro.
It seems like the only advantage is full screen mode and capturing clips on the internet. Both of which aren't necessary features for me.
Editing movies and slideshows are listed as features but why would I use quicktime pro if I already have iMovie? Is it better? different? I'm confused...
I use iMovie all the time to edit home movies - would there be any benefit to getting Quicktime Pro?

iMovie is a digital video editing app. If you add a still image to 10 seconds of audio it becomes 300 "copies" (30 fps) of the file.
QuickTime Pro allows you to keep the total file size much lower by using just the data from your source image file (say 30KB's) as it doesn't convert your single image into a "time" like video.
Some examples of my videos made with QuickTime Pro:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/California/index.html
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/03war/
Both of these examples have a total file size lower than the original audio source file.
QuickTime Pro can also create "custom" player windows:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/3woodencrosses/index.html
(hit the escape key while viewing to exit full screen mode)
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/MTV
(text and Flash and MIDI music. Under 150KB's).
It can also use custom video effects that do not render as "video" which also keeps the total file size very small:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/RedneckTexasXmas/index.html
It can use up to 99 "tracks" per movie which allows you to interchange them depending on your audience without having to create a new iMovie "video". As easy as enabling or disabling a track with a mouse click.
You can add text tracks (again, no video rendering) that are very small in file size and are also vector based so they scale in size without distortion:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/Lemon_Trees/index.html
All of my "movies" are made using QuickTime Pro.
Try it. You'll also find it very useful for converting files to other formats.

  • QuickTime Pro 7.1 hangs when trying to export a movie.

    Hi There,
I just installed the Key for QuickTime Pro on my Win XP laptop. Now, whenever I try to export a movie, QT just hangs there, using 99% of the CPU. The buttons in the dialog box seems to be active (change appearance when I hover them) but clicling any of them (including OK or Cancel) does nothing. The only way out is to kill the QT task.
If I just click OK in the first export dialog, CPU usage jumps to 99% and hangs. If I select "Options" in the export dialog, the "options" dialog itself hangs and the CPU usage jumps to 99%.
I did not try all menu options but it looks like the hang and use 99% CPU is pretty general since I was attempting to do an "Update Existing Software..." From the help menu and QT hang there too. But I can open de preferences, set them and close them without problems though.
Looking in the Application even manager, this is the error reported:
"Hanging application QuickTimePlayer.exe, version 7.1.0.210, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000."
Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?
I purchased QT Pro today because I need to convert a sequence of files into a movie. Right now I cannot do that.

Why not try updating your QuickTime software?
    Most current version is 7.4.1

  • Cannot Get Quicktime Pro to work

I am a Windows user who is having difficulty believing there is no technical support for this product.
I have purchased QuicktimePro 3 times, trying to get it to work. It does not. I get my key, and enter it in the Quicktime applet in Control Panel, and when I hit "apply" it says I have QuicktimePro. But when I open the Quicktime player (latest version), it doesn't have any of the Pro features enabled, and includes ads at the bottom trying to get me to buy QuicktimePro (again). Then I go back into Control Panel and look at the Quicktime icon again, and it doesn't say "Pro" and doesn't have my registration information in it. I enter the key again and it takes, but if I close and reopen the applet, the registration info is gone again, and again, I have regular QuickTime player.
I have spent a great deal of money purchasing this update, and because the unlock won't "stick", I've been ripped off, and there is no one to even call to figure out what's going on. I have completely deleted Quicktime and reinstalled it, and that didn't make any difference. All I"ve done is pay for registration keys that don't even work in the program.
Is anyone familiar with this problem and is there any solution? Or, does anyone know how to contact a live customer service person to either solve the problem or get a refund?
    Thanks in advance.

    801greg,
hey greg i went thru the same **** EXACTLY! finally called apple support and some smart fella finally figured it out...
    it took him awhile...
at the point where you hit the 'apply' key instead hit the 'return' key... it will then activate your quicktime into pro...
    very sloppy work apple...
btw, i'm having a dickens of the time trying to learn to edit movies in quicktimepro... do you know where the faq or a learning the basics of quicktime pro online manual can be found?
    thanks,
    tws

  • MPEG2 Video is not smooth in Quicktime Pro Player

    I have a MBP with Core2 2.4Ghz (2GB RAM, 250GB SATA HDD).
I have a bunch of mpeg2 files downloaded from my Canon HV20 HiDef camcorder. When I play the files with Quicktime Pro with MPEG2 Component, the video looks very very jerky. The CPU usage is not too bad, all other applications behave OK.
On the other hand, if I use VLC to play the same file, the video is lot smoother. CPU usage is roughly the same.
    FYI, the video is 1080i.
Can someone suggest some solution? My problem is, I want to watch these videos from Frontrow and VLC is not a solution.
The video plays fine in Windows XP, Vista and even in Linux in any player I tried so far.
This is really killing me, any solution is appreciated. I definitely do not want to go back to Windows for my media.

Quicktime does play DVDs OK. Its not as smooth as VLC, but very acceptable.
However, my MPEG2 video files are Hi-definition files from Hi-definition camcorder. These are 1080i (1920x1080 interlaced) files.
These files play perfectly smoothly on the same Mac when I use VLC player.
When I use Quicktime player, they are very jerky. Its hard to quantify how jerky it is, but just a naked eye guess would be 2 frames out of 5 are vanishing. Sound is smooth though, no hiccups in sound.
I hope that describes my problem better.

  • Image Sequence in Quicktime Pro

Can anyone here please tell me where there is a tutorial on how to import an image sequence and then export it as a quicktime movie for the web? I am overwhemed with all of the settings in QuickTime Pro and I need some help sorting it all out, which settings to choose etc? I can't seem to find any information related to this.
    Thanks in Advance

First it has to be in a format QT. recognizes .. So what format is your source material in?
The most common is .mov .. for QT. If not, it may need to be converted to a format QT. recognizes.
If you read my recent post about MPEG-2 decoder, you will find 'Streamclip' will convert many formats too MPEG-2 for QT. So you can edit in your editing program .. Exporting, using Quicktime for web delivery, it is best, from my experience to use the H264 codec. Experiment with quality, size, frame rate etc. to achieve the best quality for your export constraints .. For YouTube it must be under 10min. & max. 100megs. A really simple method in QT. is just choose 'Export for Web' .. QT. will use H264 and do all the work for you .. it's not the optimal way to do it .. but it does work. Best.Chris

  • Warning QT 7.3 update ruins Quicktime Pro features

Don't install this update, if you own Final Cut Studio 5 and use Quicktime Pro it will ruin your registration. Thanks a lot Apple, way to make my production machine temporarily useless! I'm going to consider buying Premiere before updating to FCP 6 now. I was going to in January, but I'm so disappointed right now you don't even understand. I bet they won't release a fix for this in a timely fashion either.
    Ridiculous!

The fix : I installed Leopard, and it fixed my Quicktime Pro registration. Horray. I'm glad I wasn't forced to purchase/ upgrade to Final Cut Pro 6 before 2008.
The oddity : This quicktime pro registration issue only affected 1 of my macs.
The saving grace : While I was ranting and confused by why compressor kept exporting video @ 320x240 and figuring out that Quicktime Pro had been disabled I was able to export the quicktime videos on the laptop with leopard and Quicktime 7.3 suprisingly. Video was done on time, no biggie.
I checked at work today and noticed that 4 of our macs (ppc, intel) had the 7.3 update and Tiger and they were not affected.
Sorry for posting before doing extensive research, I was nervous because I needed the videos exported. My complaining is over, beware ye updaters. I'd avoid the Quicktime 7.3 update.
    Thanks

In most cases the problem is associated with a failure to follow the installation and activation instructions HERE. However, since you have not really described your problem, it is diffucult to know for sure. Suggest you read these instruction and see if they help. If not, then describe the problem in more detail since "cannot get the upgrade to kick in" could refere to anything from failure to press the "Tab" key to failure to enter a name salutation or suffix to purchasing a key for the wrong system.

  • Is Quicktime Pro for me?

Hi. I am looking for an app that will convert HD video from my new camcorder and allow me to post that video on the web with the assurance that no one can copy or steal it off of my website. I also need to be able to have a watermark on the video. Can I do this with Quicktime Pro?
Also, are there any programs that would allow me to add more features +(for example, special effects)+ to a quicktime video?
    Thanks!

    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/F/index.html
One of my QuickTime "movies" that has been made "un-editable" via an AppleScript droplet. Viewers can save a local copy but not export or edit the file.
QuickTime Pro can easily add an image "watermark" to your videos.
"Special effects" are a little more complex and some third party software may be required. One of my files that uses still images and yet has some motion and effects:

  • Cannot use itunes or quicktime since buying quickTime Pro

Itunes and Quicktime were working great. I purchased the key for QuickTime Pro and input it. Now, whenever I start itunes I get "please wait while windows configures itunes..." but it never configures.
When I click "Quicktime Player" I get "Could not load or find the quicktime active X control".
I have tried running both programs as an administrator, rebooting, reinstalling, etc. The programs are both hosed.
I tried the registry edits suggested. When running AS AN ADMINISTRATOR I get "pcast cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Access is denied"
How do I get this working again? I'm going to challenge the charge on my credit card if I can't get my system back the way it was.

I have the same problem. Is there any soluations?

  • I have purchased Quicktime Pro and can't enter key!

I am using a windows vista PC, I have downloaded Quicktime 7 and then gone on to purchase the key for Quicktime pro. However! I can not find the QuickTime 7 Control Panel within my computer's control panel or anywhere else on the system for that matter! When I checked my windows XP PC to compare, I found the quicktime control panel straight away! Is this problem relating to the PC having Vista as an operating system, and if so is there a way round it as I really need to set up pro on my Vista machine.
thank you in advance for anyone who can help, this is making my head hurt!

Make sure you're entering in both the user name and key code exactly as in the email Apple sent you. Any error in either, including leaving off a salutation (for instance, if the email says "Mr. John Smith") will cause the registration to error.
Also make sure you purchased a key for the correct platform (Windows or Mac). QuickTime keys are not cross-platform.
