The AirPort utility doesn't support my AirPort Express, now what?

The Airport untility set up my new AirPort Express just fine, however, when I try locate my older AirPort Express to extend my network, it says the AirPort Utility doesn't support the older AirPort Express. It's there in the WiFi drop down menu and, trying to confgure it from the existing utility menu bar is fruitless. What now?

Is this another example of Apple's policy of planned obsolesce?

Just bought a brand new airport extreme and having trouble with it being recognized.  My mac is version 10.5.8.  What should I do?

The new AirPort Extreme needs the 6.x version of AirPort Utility, which comes packed in with Lion 10.7.5 or Mountain Lion 10.8.x......or......you can also configure the device using an iPhone or iPad running a recent iOS.
    From Apple's Specifications:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
    A few options.....
Borrow another Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion for 10-15 minutes and set it up. The Mac running 10.5.8 will be able to connect to the wireless....but it will not be able to make any changes to the configuration of the Extreme.
Update to Lion or Mountain Lion.....but check first to make sure that your Mac will support the operating system first.
Use....or borrow an iPhone or iPad to set up the Extreme

  • After recommendations, I have bought a copy of photoshop elements 6 but it is unfortunately on disc and I don't have a drive on my macbook air. How can i download it to my Air as the Adobe site doesn't support download of '6' now

    Any ideas ?

How/where did you buy Elements 6? Adobe has not sold it since 2008.
I don't know of any download links for it.
If you're running Mavericks, I doubt it will even install or run.
Have you tried installing from disc using a Superdive?
A legal version of Elements 12 will cost no more than $100 (possibly less in stores).

  • I have both Apple and Android devices. My Android devices will not stay connected to wireless . I have the Airport Express. The Android devices are a Galaxy S4 and Tab 3. These both worked perfectly on my ancient Linksys WRT 120 N wireless router.

I have called Apple support twice and no one can confrm or deny as to whether Android devices can connect with the Airport Express. I have had the it configured 3 times so far and my Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 are useless with the Airport Express.

BTW what did you mean by using my old wireless router as a AP?
Every Wireless router ever made is actually made of two components..
A router and a wireless AP. (AP = Access Point).
To use any wireless router as a AP you simply bypass or turn off the router..
In an Apple router this is called Bridge mode..
In many routers it is known as AP or WAP mode.
But often they do not have the option..
Set it up manually.. we call this WAN bypass as it will bypass the router.
So what you do is open your wireless router setup page in your browser.. go to the LAN setup page.
You need to do two things.
    1. Turn off the dhcp server.
    2. Set the LAN IP to match the main router..
For instance if your plug it into your apple router and it is at the default IP.. 10.0.1.1 then set the Linksys to 10.0.1.254
The Linksys is then updated.. Plug the ethernet cable from LAN port apple router to LAN port WRT120 (not WAN)
Now with a computer plugged into the apple router or into the Linksys .. by ethernet.. open the IP address you just set.. go to the wireless tab in the setup and give the wireless SSID a suitable name for your other (non-apple) products.. voila.. you have now turned a wireless router into an AP.

  • There is no signal coming from the airport express

There is no signal coming from my airport express. The light is always amber in color.  It would turn green but only for 1-2 seconds and then back to amber again for a long time.  I'm pretty sure there is a signal problem from the airport express.  What could be the solution in this problem?
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, the solid amber light is likely a symptom that the Express has experienced an internal component failure.
Try a Factory Default Reset as follows to see if you can unlock the device.
Power down the Express for at least 15-20 minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in for another 10-12 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
    Release the reset button
If you have a slow, blinking amber light after 40-45 seconds, the Express may be OK. If the light stays solid amber after a several tries on the default reset, I'm afraid that it will need to be replaced.

  • Range of the Airport Express

I am using my Airport Express in an upstairs office.  I can access the internet in a den downstairs at the other end of the house with a second MacBook Pro - BUT I cannot access the internet with my IPad.  What is the range of the Airport Express?

What is the range of the Airport Express?
Apple's specifications of 150 feet don't really mean much since this measurement taken in free air with no other wireless networks around, and no obstructions like walls or ceilings in the signal path.
As you might imagine, it is not possible to predict wireless coverage in a home due to all the unknowns.....how many walls, ceilings, etc. must the signal try to pass through? What is the construction of the walls and ceilings? Are there other wireless networks or camera/security systems in the area?  Cordless phones?
The bottom line here is that the iPad should pickup the signal about as well as your MacBook Pro, so if you've already tried powering down the Express and then restarting it to reset the device and the wireless signal....and the iPad still won't connect...you might want to take it to the Apple store to let them have a  look.

I am trying to hook up my Airport Express to my current network and AirPort Extreme but keep getting the same error message: "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." Any thoughts?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

Is this an older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme? If yes, it is true that AirPort Utility 6.x no longer supports the older AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express models.
A model number......located on the bottom of the Extreme or on the side of the Express would be helpful to confirm what you have.
Apple probably does want you to buy a new AirPort Extreme.
The workaround might be to use a Mac or PC running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
A more complicated workaround would be to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.  This is not supported by Apple......it does work for me.....but may not work for you. See this article for more details:

How can I administer a Gen1 Airport Express from, my MacPro (OS 10.9, Airport Utility 6.3.2). I can see the Express in the WiFi window but from the Airport Utility I get the following message: " This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." Of course there's nothing of value on the support page. Any clues anyone?

Apple has dropped support in Mavericks (10.9) of the AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme models that were discontinued more than six years ago.
You can still administer the older AirPort models if you have a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC.

    What to do?
    Two Options:
    1) Buy a new AirPort Express, which will be supported.
    2) Try a workaround....not supported by Apple.....to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on the Mac using the Mountain Lion operating system and use the 5.6 application to administer the old AirPort Express.  See this thread for more details:

This is the message I have recieved in installing my AirPort Utility... Can anyone help me?

Old AirPort base stations and Time Capsules aren't compatible with AirPort Utility 6.2, so you have to use AirPort Utility 5.6. As you have already updated, you can't install AirPort Utility 5.6 by the normal way.
To install AirPort Utility 5.6 on your MacBook Pro, follow these steps > http://frank.is/mountain-lion-and-the-old-airport-utility/

After updating my Time Capsule, I received this message on my  Airport Express: This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station." How can I fix this?

Per chance is your AirPort Express an 802.11g model? If so, you will need to use AirPort Utility v5.6 to administer it. However, this version will not install under OS X Mountain Lion without a workaround.
The following is one of those workarounds:
Here are the basic steps to install version 5.6 under Mountain Lion using CharlesSoft's Pacifist:
If you haven't already download the AirPort Utility disk image file directly from Apple Support Download
Place the resultant AirPortUtility56.dmg file onto your Mac's Desktop.
    Run Pacifist.
Click on the Open Package option. Find the disk image file that you just placed on your desktop, and then, click on Open.
The utility is located as follows: Contents of AirPortUtility56.dmg > Contents of AirPortUtility56.pkg > Contents of AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6.app
Drag AirPort Utility 5.6.app to your Mac's /Applications/Utilities folder.
You can now run the AirPort Utility from the Utilities folder.

  • Airport utility doesn't support my airport express

I just noticed my Airport Express isn't showing up in the Airport Utility, i mean, it shows up but there's no light on, not green or orange, just no light at all. When i click on the icon in the Airport Utility, it says this version of Airport Utility (v.3.6.1) doesn't support this base station.  The Airport Express is quite old, i've had it for many years, not sure how long, probably first or second generation. It says it's model A1084, 2005.
The Airport Express has always worked fine with my previous computer, MacBook, currently OS 10.6.8, and with my new computer MBP OS 10.8.5. I used it with AirTunes to play music through external speakers on the old computer.  With the new OS, it was using Air Play. The old Airport Express worked fine.  I got the new computer in November.  I was using a very old Airport Extreme as the router.  In late December, i got a new Time Capsule.  Software update was run and after the Time Capsule was installed, the Airport Express still played music. The green light lit up in Airport Utility.  I played music through the external speakers as recently as a couple of weeks ago, both in iTunes and on You Tube.
I don't know why music is not playing through the external speakers now. The device shows up in Airport Utility but it appears dead and i get that message saying the the version of Airport Utility doesn't support the base station.  The green light is on, on the Airport Express. i have not updated the Airport Utility since late December when the Time Capsulre was installed.
The only thing that has happened recently, though i don't know why it would make any difference, is that a few days ago for the first time, i did a backup of my hard drive to the Time Capsule, using Time Machine. I had not done this before since i got the Time Capsule, it was the first time. Other than that, i haven't installed any new software and haven't done anything differently that i know of, although a few days ago, i clicked OK on a box in You Tube and my You Tube account now no longer has any of my favorites or playlists. It's the same account as far as i can tell, i didn't log out, it was still logged in when this happened. While that is a disaster, it doesn't seem related to my external speakers not playing all of a sudden.
Is there anything i can try in order to fix this?  thanks

The Airport Express is quite old, i've had it for many years, not sure how long, probably first or second generation. It says it's model A1084, 2005.
This would be an 802.11g AirPort Express base station. There is only one generation of this version.
When i click on the icon in the Airport Utility, it says this version of Airport Utility (v.3.6.1) doesn't support this base station.
I'm not aware that Apple produced a v3.6.1. Did you mean v5.6.1 instead? If so this version is meant to administer these older 802.11g AirPorts on Macs running OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. More precisely for versions 10.5.7 thru 10.6.8 ... so your MacBook should be able to run this version of the AirPort Utility.
I played music through the external speakers as recently as a couple of weeks ago, both in iTunes and on You Tube.
If you are streaming from YouTube, then you must be using a third-party solution like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil. Is this correct?
The only thing that has happened recently, though i don't know why it would make any difference, is that a few days ago for the first time, i did a backup of my hard drive to the Time Capsule, using Time Machine.
You're right. That should have not made any difference as far as streaming goes.

I assume that your MacBook Pro is running OS X Mountain Lion ... correct? If so, version 5.6 can run just fine on this version of OS X; it just can't be installed in the traditional way.
Here are the basic steps to install version 5.6 under Mountain Lion using CharlesSoft's Pacifist:
If you haven't already download the AirPort Utility disk image file directly from Apple Support Download
