The App Updates in iTunes

Why does the section on the left of iTunes (where library is located) indicate that 2 updates are available and then when I click on updates available it gives me about 16 icons?

It's a bug in iTunes. Do you have the latest version of iTunes? v7.7.1 corrected that issue for me. Download it here:

Have you restarted your phone?
If so, try a reset. Press and hold the home & sleep/wake buttons until the screen goes blank, ignoring the power off slider if it comes up.
Check for the app again after the phone starts back up.

Well, if they have truly disappeared then something is really messed up. For really messed up stuff, you need to set it to factory default condition, and then afterwards, restore it from your backup.

Connect your iPod to any computer with iTunes installed, highlight your device and try syncing the apps only. If it doesn't work might have to restore through iTunes. With the new iTunes and iCloud beta, you can have the iTunes list what apps are missing on your device but if you had previously purchased in the past and then have iTunes install them. You should always get in the habit of backing up your iPhone whenever you do any firmware/OS updating/upgrading or transferring over to new device. I really really really really hope you can get back at least some of your old info. I will tell you this, I have been kicking myself in the butt for not routinely backing up my iPhone when my beautiful special iPhone 4 came up missing and had to revert back to my 3GS. iPhone 5 will be released in a few months so I am holding off on purchasing a new iPhone til then, not that I did so without reservation and a little bit of iPhone 4 withdraw.

I have no more tricks up my sleeve other than maybe it is a firewall issue with your router.

I purchased apps with one Itunes account (hotmail). I then changed my account sign-in to a different email sign-in (ME) because of iCloud. Can I easily convert the apps to an Itunes (ME) account when an update for each app occurrs?

Did you change your existing iTunes account or did you create a new account ? If you updated the existing account then you should be ok. But if you created a new account, then as apps are tied to the account that originally bought/downloaded them and they can't be copied or transferred to a different account, only that original account will be able to download any future updates to them or re-download them on a different device.

The latest update for iTunes 11.1.3, iBooks 1.0.1, Mail 1.0 won't update/install properly.

I recently installed Mavericks. The latest update for iTunes, iBooks and Mail do not install properly. I have tried updating individually and the Appstore indicates that they're installed. However after every restart the Appstore shows that the same update is available. I checked the applications folder and clicked on the 3 apps to "Get Info" and they're all still the old versions. I've repeatedly tried to update and install and the Appstore history has shown that I've tried over and over again. Any solutions would be appreciated please!

I'm having this same issue, except Mail and iBooks are both installed, but showing as need to be updated (to same version already installed several days ago). iTunes was also doing this until I manually installed it, but the other two still won't be recognized as updated. I did a sudo softwareupdate -i -a and that failed as well. So I did a
sudo softwareupdate -v --reset-ignored -l and showed this update is somehow broken

Why do the app updates freeze?

Since last iOS 7.0.4 update the Apps updates will not work. Also I go into settings and tap the App Store and it freezes. Anyone having the same problem or know how to fix it?

Cannot BULK download App Updates after iTunes 9.0.1 Update

I had a bunch of updates sitting there, and I decided to update iTunes before doing them. I thought that would be smart. However, after the iTunes update to 9.0.1 was complete I got this message when I tried to bulk download the app updates:

*Click OK to refresh the page. If you have available updates after refreshing, click Download All Free Updates."*
I don't know what "refresh the page" means; I tried restarting iTunes & restarting the computer and nothing is working. The information is not outdated, as I really do have to download all the updates that are shown. I had to MANUALLY download each update, which is kind of a pain, but at least I was able to get the updates. The "download all free updates" (for a bulk download) button refuses to work though.
Any ideas? I don't want to have to manually update each app every time if I don't have to. Thanks!

All I have to do is select Applications from the Library list - then in the lower right corner select - Check for updates - if there are any then I select Download updates from the page that comes up and iTunes d/l the updates.

Whenever I open iTunes it always says under applications that I have updates but whenever I click on e.g. 9 updates available I'm told there are no updates!!! It's really annoying. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can resolve it? Thanks in advance.

Thanks jlevinson, I appreciate your insight. However, it just so happens that I have "I Say Free", a classic game that brings back memories from my childhood of the electronic version called Simon. The app updated just fine on my iOS4 iphone. However, I ran into the problem you mentioned on my ipad, which does not have iOS4 yet. Contrary to what you say though, itunes does not remove the old I Say Free version from my iPad when syncing but, rather, will not update and leaves the old copy on my iPad so it continues to work...no need to go digging around in the trash for the old version, it automatically stays. A dialogue box comes up saying as much. When iOS4 comes out for iPad in the fall, it will then update automatically. I will have never lost use of I Say Free at any time. I like this automation. So, I respect your opinion, but your understanding of the update process is incorrect. Just as we have the choice in itunes to sync songs automatically or manually, I would like the choice to set the apps to update automatically. I think that is not too much to ask.
And I always click update all without checking the specs. I don't have time to check the specs on each app update nor would I want to. I would really like it to be automatic so I can focus on productivity or consumption. And by the way, if an app that I really need won't work because my device is obsolete, I will be getting the next generation device. I have never had that rare issue though. Your point might be used for this situation though: Using the I Say Free example, if I did not previously have that app on my iPad, I would not be able to get it today because the old version is not available anymore, but that is an entirely different issue than the issue of this thread.
So, yes, I would still want to have automatic updates.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app

    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
