The application "Finder.app" can't be opened. Anyone getting this error after upgrade?

Upgraded to new OS version and getting  "The application “Finder.app” can’t be opened."
The icon in the tray has a small black dot under it. Not sure whether that is relevant

Hi ..
A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help after an OS X upgrade.
Top left corner of your screen click the  Apple   > Shut Down.
After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.
Once you are in Safe Mode, go back to the Apple  menu. From the drop down menu click:  Restart
Then try the Finder.

  • Time machine problem? The application Finder.app can't be opened -10810

I've got a Snow Leopard system with an external FireWire Maxtor drive that has been set to be a Time Machine archive of the internal drive. I'm noticing the following problem (twice so far) which may or may not be TM related. I leave my machine and come in the morning; Time Machine says no backup happened since 7:45pm last night. I notice the file system is acting weird - can't open any of the disks from the desktop. I try to restart the Finder, and it says "The application Finder.app can't be opened -10810" - won't start the Finder! So, I had to reboot (and disconnected the FW drive). I'll try it for a couple of nights without the TM machine and see what happens. The reason I suspect TM is that sometimes I see the icon on the TM disk change from the blue/gray TM icon back to its native FW disk icon, and sometimes I see a message that says "Can't find disk" or something similar for that external drive.
Any ideas? Should I be looking for an external drive from another vendor, or will it be the same thing? Does TM have problems associated with Finder and error -10810? How do I debug?

No, I tried different drives, and it made no difference.
In the end I turned it off, and did backups with SuperDuper!.
funny you should mention SuperDuper. When you had this problem, did you have SuperDuper scheduled to back up other drives? I have a theory, which I'll test eventally. For some reason, this TM problem only happened at night - not all the times it activated (every hour) during the workday. Why?!? Well, one thing that happens at night for me is a scheduled SuperDuper backup of the same drive (the one TM is backing up) onto a mirror drive (not the one TM is writing to).
Maybe that's when the freeze occurs - when they both coincide at night? I'd think that the Unix-base of OS X shouldn't have any problems when two apps are reading one disk and at the same time, but maybe TM and SuperDuper are both doing some sort of low-level reads that can't be done at the same time? What do you think - might this explain your issues also?

  • The application Finder.app can't be opened. (-600)

...After updating to 10.8.2. Anybody else?.

Bob's solution was no solution for me, probably because after trashing those 2 PLISTs I decided to follow critichu's advice of relaunching the Finder rather than logging out or restarting.
Let's face it.  When I have these Finder problems, I can always solve them by restarting.  But the reason I came to this forum in the first place was to find out how to prevent this from either happening again or solve it quickly so I don't need to logout or restart.
What seems to cause Finder problems for me on a regular basis is my Time Capsule, which is connected to my 10.8.4 DuoCore iMac via Gigabit Ethernet (and shared in our office).  For whatever reason, while I am in the midst of copying files to/from the Time Capsule, the Finder will lockup with spinning beachball forever.  I have experienced this often in Adobe Illustrator too.  When saving a file from Illustrator to my Time Capsule, my entire Mac locks up and I am forced to restart.
Anyway, the problem I have today was not caused by a document save to Time Capsule in Illustrator, but by merely copying files from my Time Capsule to my desktop.  The Finder locked up, so I tried to kill it and relaunch.  It wouldn't relaunch.  So I then started quitting all my open apps (including Illustrator and Outlook), and then mysteriously the Finder launched.
Strangeness began though when I clicked on the Downloads folder sitting in my Dock.  I always choose "Show in Finder" when I right-click on that folder in my Dock.  But this time when I do that, I get a "Finder can't be opened" error -600.  But the Finder is already open!  However, when I hit Opt-CMD-ESC, I see two instances of the Finder in the dialog!  But in Activity Monitor, I only see one instance of the Finder.  And quitting that instance (which quits the Finder visually), still leaves one open instance inside the "Force Quit Applications" dialog!
Yes, I've tried "killall Finder" in the Terminal, but that just gives me the following error:
No matching processes belonging to you were found
Is there really no rememdy for this other than to Logout or Restart?  Surely there must be.  This is getting quit painful.
I'm also unsure when this started. I think I was still having this problem even under Lion, although exclusively in Illustrator (when saving to my Time Capsule), rather than in the Finder.
    I'm baffled.

  • The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810

This just happened subsequent to restared after opening an email about free medical apps.  Lately, I've had to go to Finder > Apps to open my homepage, gmail, on Firefox.  I prefer Firefox to Safari.  Thanks in advance for responses.

Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return. Then log out and log back in.
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain user
That's one line, not more than one.
Edit: Unfortunately, the forum software mangles the line by inserting a space in the word "Services." You'll have to copy it into a text editor first, remove the space, then run it in Terminal.

  • Error -10810 (The application Finder.app can't be opened)

    Hello,
My praise: For the first time in 3.5 year that I own a Mac I found this error in one of my account.
My problem: Everybody in our household have a login, last night my wife tried to use hers and got this error. You can not start any application the only thing you can do is switch account but if you do that all other account a stuck. After restarting the machine I can access my login without any problem. I repaired permission and scan the disk. I also used the tips I found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10340873&#10340873 as well as the tool mention. No solution, still doing it.
My question: Did anybody got this message other than Guuz? I'm thinking of deleting the user and recreate one, how do I retrieve the document folder in this user before I delete. Any other idea?
    Thanks
    Thierry

I've seen this errors a few times on my machine. usually restarting makes it go away. but when it happens to me it happens on all accounts so i don't think recreating a user will solve this. I usually repair the startup disk and zap all caches with YASU afterward to be on safe side.

  • I plugged in a USB drive, tried to open Finder, got the message Finder.app can't be opened - 10810, went into terminal.app, messed up, now terminal screen blank.  how do i regain terminal in order to fix finder problem?

With my iMac running, I plugged in a USB drive.  When I clicked on finder, I got the message Finder.app can't be opened - 10810.  I removed the USB drive.  I messed up while in Terminal.app trying to fix Finder problem.  Now my terminal screen is blank, just the cursor, but no action after typing a command & clicking enter.  Help!

I finally figured out a way to Restart (normal way wasn't working...) & that Restart DID FIX both the Terminal problem AND the Finder problem.  So easy, yet so elusive.  Thanks so much.

  • The application iTunes.app can't be opened (-36)

I have just but the latest Macbook Pro installed with Mac OS X v10.7.4. I am alarmed at the many applications that are not compatible. However, iTunes not being able to play an mp3 is a shocking low.
I am getting the error message in the subject line. Can anyone help with resolving this issue?
    Thanks All.

Hi again Kirk. Well, before attempting your solution I thought I would try again to move tracks to the iTunes application without copying the file to the iTunes folder. And guess what? It worked. It seems to be fine now.
The only action I have completed is to restart the computer. Perhaps I should have tried that in the first place, however, with a new Macbook Pro I just didn't expect to encounter such a basic problesm. Nonetheless, thank you for your time and effort.

  • I recently updated to Mac OS 10.6.5 so Firefox will not quit (unless forced to quit), and I get the following error message. "The application Firefox.app can't be opened -600." Same problem with Safari, Google Earth, I-Tunes, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

I have to actually force quit these applications for this to work. How do I fix this. I also upgraded to Firefox 3.6.13.

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
    Nathan

    I have the same issue
    did anybody fixed it ?

A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

  • "Finder.app can't be opened"

I seem to have had finder lockup and have to force quit out of it a number of time recently.
    I then get
    The application finder.app can't be opened -10810
and have to run a restart to get it going again.
how worried should I be about this? Solutions?
Thanks in advance for any experience on this.

These are both simple and could fix it.
    Restart in safe mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    Then restart normally.
    Delete the Finder preferences file.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/finder.html
If both of these fail then you will need to try repair permission etc. Which are more complicated.
edit: You could also try making a new user account and if the problem doesn't persist migrating your files over
