Not clear to me why you want to replace an out of date version of Safari with another out of date version?
If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have) and it is misbehaving:
N.B. Never delete Safari, never run it under Rosetta, don't use proxy settings, and don't change the application's name or move it from the top level of the Applications Folder to a sub-folder.
(If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall. Alternatively you can download Safari directly:
Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
Safari 5.0.5 for Leopard (and Snow Leopard) can be downloaded from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070
Make sure you download the correct version for your system.
Also, observe the recommended procedure for installing software: repair permissions and close all applications, install, then repair permissions again.)
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta and which was updated to v.3.1.2, and now Tiger uses Safari 4.1.3 and Leopard uses Safari 5.0.5, as does Snow Leopard albeit a different version. If these latest versions of Safari are not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to a previous version of Safari  can have repercussions, as previous versions of Safari used a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, but if you really want to do this post back for instructions on the safe way to do so.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-ons that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet, and the dreaded CT Toolbar. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for the latest version of Safari on your current operating system.
You must also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates. These require a restart and a permission repair.
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
Hard Disk/Library/InputManagers
Home/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates and updates to Safari (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Lastly, the Safari updates require a restart of your Mac, and sometimes even a double restart is required.

• Just updated to Mac OS 10.7.3 and each time I attempt to open Firefox I receive the message; "Firefox quit unexpectedly". Can't use FF!

Just updated to Mac OS 10.7.3 and each time I attempt to open Firefox I receive the message; "Firefox quit unexpectedly". Can't use FF! Repeated attempts to open FF result in the same message.
Downloaded FF again and the same message occurs.
Safari, of course, works but that is not my choice.

Hey b00m3r,
Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
There is also a lot of useful stuff in the [[Firefox crashes]] Knowledge Base article. If you've recently upgraded, you might want to check out [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/latest-firefox-issues#w_firefox-crashes-when-i-start-it this article] as well.
Hopefully this helps!

• The application Spotlight quit unexpectedly

Okay, so I got the following message after restarting my laptop after iChat kept crashing (and after I was messing around trying to fix it): "The application Spotlight quit unexpectedly."
I went ahead to reinstall the Mac OS X Leopard software. At the end of my reinstalling of OS X, I went to restart the Mac and received a continuous "You need to restart your computer." message. After some research, and correct me if I'm wrong, this is referred to as a "kernel panic".
After attempting to restart my computer a couple times, I went to restart the computer in Safe Mode. Upon running the start-up in safe mode, I received the very same "The application Spotlight quit unexpectedly." error message.
Please let me know if there are any steps I can take to fix this problem. Thank you, and your replies are appreciated.

Hi tttb2008,
I was able to track down a couple of articles that might be of interest. The first, is the kBase article from Apple's website on how to re-index Spotlight. Be curious to see if you're able to do that, either logged in normally or via Safe Mode.
Rebuild Spotlight Index: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
Another article I found is from X-Lab's site which has some great knowledge resources and goes into some further explanation.
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/stopspotlightindex.html#Anchor-Rebuilding-49575
There is a portion on the page regarding some Terminal commands on how to tool with Spotlight but I recommend a user always exercising caution when moving around in Terminal or digging for files on the root level of the drive.
You indicated that you "went ahead to reinstall the Mac OS X Leopard software." Did you perform an Archive & Install? Did you preserve user and network settings as well? During the reboot process, when did the kernel panic message appear? Pre-Apple logo? Post-Apple logo? Did you ever get the "spinning gear" below the Apple logo?

• The application dotmacsynclient quit unexpectedly...

Recently I started getting a message "The Application dotmacsynclient quit unexpectedly". This pops up every 15 minutes or so. What is this app and why is it doing this?
This is only occuring on my white Macbook with 10.5.8.
Thank you in advance.
Markoman

(A) Just because the spinning ic
ons indicate syncing is done, it isn't - I had a lot of calendar data and it took an hour to sync but by opening the calendar too soon (while it was apparently still syncing in the background even though the spinning icon had stopped) I corrupted the darn thing. I believe the spinning icon only indicates when data is being passed between the device and MobileMe - it still has to merge the data and that may take a very long time in some cases.
(B) You can "test" which data set is causing the problem by unchecking them in turn in the Sync tab of the MobileMe control panel. When it syncs without errors, follow #2 below to replace that particular data set (note: you may need to leave it set to Automatic sync and wait until it tries to sync next to get the error message - I'd budget an hour before being comfortable that no message is coming up).
(C) Use the web client (www.me.com) to see what data is really stored on MobileMe and is being synced with your devices.
1. Using the MobileMe control panel, under the Sync Tab, set Sync to Manual. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on your drive. (You should do this before and after every Apple Software Update also... and twice on Thursdays just for fun.)
2. Replace the data on the machine or MobileMe with the best usable set (this will overwrite one side or the other completely): Using the MobileMe control panel, under the Sync Tab, click Advanced. Click "Reset Sync Data". Choose the individual data services (or ALL) you want to reset and the direction you want the data to flow then click "Replace".
3. Find the iSync Application on your hard drive (it should be inside your Applications folder). Open it. Delete any devices you do not use (I had an old RAZR listed, now I have no devices shown). Open the Preferences for iSync. Choose to Reset Sync History and follow the dialog boxes.
4. Start from scratch! Using the MobileMe control panel, under the Sync Tab, click Advanced. There will be one or more computers listed as Registered and when they were last synced. Click on each one and Unregister it. Swich to the Account Tab and Sign Out. Reboot (just pretend it's Windows). Starting with your primary computer or the one you think has your best, most complete data, open the MobileMe control panel and log into your account. Switch to the Sync Tab in the MobileMe control pane, choose just one service at a time, and Sync it manually. I'd start with the address book and/or calendars and work your way down from there (I'd also stay away from keychains until last). Use the web interface at www.me.com to check your progress. Progress to other computers one-at-a-time until everything is syncing properly.

• "The Application Compressor quit unexpectedly"

I have recently upgraded from G5 to Mac Pro 2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2GB ram, OSX 10.4.9.
I tried to export my timeline from FCP 5.0.4 to Compressor and I get "The Application Compressor quit unexpectedly".
Every single time I try i will get the error. (I pretty much trasnfered the software from G5, and when I open the Final Cut Studio Pro software, I just put my serial number in)
I even tried to open Compressor without FCP open, and I also get the same error.
I looked through this forum and found someone says to delete compressor's preference file.
I looked in library and preference folder, and I just can't find compressor's p-file. I did delete FCP's p-file to see if it would work, but it didn't change anything.
Does anybody has same problem, and know the solution?
or can anyone tell me where else I should look for Compressor's p-file so that i can delete and see if it will fix my problem?
I'm not sure if it matters, but I also upgraded from Adobe CS2 to CS3 (design standard suits).

"I pretty much trasnfered the software from G5, and when I open the Final Cut Studio Pro software, I just put my serial number in"
Copying Pro apps to another machine is never a good thing.
What you will be missing are all the bit and pieces associated with these apps.
Some libraries, plugins and other obscure goodies are not going to be in place in the System folder.
Even if you knew what to copy, you would have to be logged in as "root" to add these.
Your better solution is to reinstall the full FCP suite.
If that doesn't work?
The best solution is to bite the bullet, save any essential files to another drive, wipe your boot drive and start from scratch with a fresh install of OS X and everything else.
As for the Compressor pref file,
com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist
Look in your Home/Library/Preferences/

• The Application has quit unexpectely

While I was trying to play a game on my Macbook before the game even starts I get 'The application has quit unexpectely' error.
My Macbook is just 15 days old and that game previously ran perfectly fine on my Macbook.
Is there anything I can try to make it work?
I know I can upgrade my RAM but I don't have the money quite yet, so is there anything I can do besides upgrade my RAM to make my game run?
Thanks so much,
N/A =)

1. When you updated to 10.4.8, which version did you come from?
2. Did you update using the Combo update, which would include all previous updates? If you used the incremental update, you may have skipped a version. It would not hurt to re-install the Combo update and make certain you use the Intel file.
3. Repair permissions by going to:
Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app
Open the app, select your Hard Drive, make sure the First Aid tab is selected, and click the Repair Permissions button.
4. Click on the Apple Menu > About this Mac and make sure all of your RAM is present.
5. Click on the Apple Menu > Force Quit to see what apps may be running.

Hope to hear from you all soon.
Cheers

Quit Safari then open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go then move the silverlight.plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
Try Safari. See if that made a difference.
The coreclr plug in is in some way related to Silverlight.

• "The application iChat quit unexpectedly"; "Library not loaded"?

Whenever I try to launch iChat, I receive "the application iChat quit unexpectedly" error.
Neither "Relaunch" nor "Reset and Relaunch" fix the issue, and when I click "Report" and view the "Report Details" it gives the output enclosed below.
The gist of the error is "Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework/Versions/A/ScreenShar ing".
It also says "Reason: no suitable image found", but it also says it:
"Did find:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework/Versions/A/ScreenShari ng: unknown file type, first eight bytes: 0x6E 0x61 0x6D 0x65 0x20 0x20 0x48 0x42"
I've removed and reinstalled iChat (when in Safe Boot -- with the Shift key) from Disk 1 of the Mac OS X Install disk 1 by using the "Optional Installs.mpkg" installer and selecting only iChat, but I still receive the same error.
How can I reinstall this "ScreenSharing" library? Would that likely fix the issue?
PS - I just realized that if I go to "System Preferences" and click "Sharing", the options are totally blank! I can't see any options or change any Sharing configuration! All my other System Preferences show up correctly.
So now the question becomes, how do I install just the "Sharing" System Preference?
Or should I try to reset permissions on the Sharing System Preference somehow?
Thanks!!

Note that the first eight bytes of a Universal-Binary Mach-O image should be 0xCAFEBABE, 0x00000002. Since the existing file was so vastly different, after all else is said and done, you may want to make sure your hard drive checks out okay in Disk Utility.

I have a Brother Laser printer working fine but just can't get the Canon to work.
If I try to print a document, it comes up with "Error Number : 311 Printer is in use or an error has occurred. If an error has occurred, eliminate the cause of the error" which is not very helpful:) I'd love to eliminate the cause of the error!
It prints perfectly when connected to my iMac directly via USB cable.
The Canon (and Brother) both print from my wife's Windows XP box that is also connected to the DI-624S Router.
I'm relatively new to mac so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

The 'CIJAutoSetupTool' is used by the system after selecting a USB connected Canon PIXMA printer. It is not something that a user can open - it is called automatically by the Canon driver software and is used to determine the model of printer being added.
I believe your error occurs due to the inability of the Canon software to correctly determine the printer when connected to the D-Link router. This is a limitation of the Canon driver, which is the same problem when you have the printer connected to a Windows computer and shared.
The solution is to use a CUPS based driver, like that offered by Gutenprint and PrintFab. Since Gutenprint is free, this would be the preferred selection. You will need v5.2.3, as this lists your model as a supported printer. You can download the software from Sourceforge (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php).
With the Gutenprint driver installed you will need to remove the Canon driver, because when you select the USB connected printer the Canon software will try to add the printer and possibly cause the same error again. The easiest method is to browse to ./Library/Printers/Canon and delete the BJPrinters folder and then empty the trash. With the Canon software removed, you should be able to select the USB share in the default view, and then browse to the iP4600 Gutenprint driver in the Print Using menu.

• "The application PubSubAgent quit unexpectedly"

Can't open Safari. I get this message every time I try to open it. The application pubsubagent quit unexpectedly. I already tried clearing and deleting pubsubagent and that didn't do anything. I don't have a mobile me .mac account. When I try to open iTunes I get "the application iTunes quit unexpectedly". This is on a MacBook with 10.5.8

In System Preferences>MobileMe or .mac, remove any login info if there.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

• Recently installed Spotify; problems @ startup; trashed all Spotify info; now I only get "The application Safari quit unexpectedly".

I recently installed Spotify, but had nothing but problems every time I did a startup.  So, I deleted everything tied to Spotify.  NOW, when I launch Safari, a window pops up telling me "The application Safari quit unexpectedly".  Has anyone else had this problem.  I cannot get online at all now.

I've got the same problem, and have the same OS (10.5.8)
