The application has unexpectedly quit???

Hello,
I have been using iMovie, and iDVD for a few years now. Nothing fancy, just home videos, but I really enjoy it, and I feel very good when a project is done and I can share it with my family.
My most recent project is a group of iMovies based on the first 4 years of my middle daughter's life. I title each movie by year (1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993). Each movie has titles, transitions, soundtrack music, and "chapters" added, all standard iMovie stuff.
My problem is that this project will not work. The project starts out fine, just like always, with the little sideways barber pole spinning away, but when I come back several hours later to check on it, there is a window stating that the "application has unexpectedly quit" and asking me if I want to submit a report to apple. This has not happened before.
The first time it happened, I did all the things I have learned to do when iMovie tries to act up or give me trouble, specifically: I deleted the iDVDplist, I "repaired permissions", and I even ran "Cacheout X" and restarted my computer. But after all that, when I tried the project again, it "unexpectedly quit" again.
I don't know what to do now? I have read that many people have had trouble with iDVD chapters being placed at transitions. I thought this must be a problem with the new iDVD5, because I have always placed chapters at transitions (and at the very beginning of a project) and I have never had a problem before.
Since I don't know what else to do, I am going to go back and move the chapters around avoiding the beginning, and any transitions, and see if that makes a difference. Other than that, can anyone suggest anything else I could try?
Would upgrading to iLIFE '05 help? I actually own it. I have had the box sitting on my desk for months, but I have been reluctant to load it because of many of the problems that I have read about in these forums. In my case, iDVD4 has been working very reliably for me, and my thought was "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" Well, now it seems to be broken, so, should I try to fix it?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Lincoln

Thank you David,
I appreciate your advise. As you suggested, I went back and moved all the chapters from each of the iMovies. I have never NOT placed a chapter at the very beginning of a project, and it seems strange for the "2nd" chapter to be listed as chapter #1 (since the first chapter "Beginning" is implied), but--- it worked!
It is hard to say exactly what worked, because I also created an entirely new project. It was an exact duplicate of the original project in every way (except for the new chapter locations), but I simply couldn't figure out how to "update" the original project after I made the changes, and I thought that making a new project would be the easiest thing.
So it is probably the chapter changes that fixed it, but perhaps there was some wierd problem with the first project. The other thing I was wondering about was that this project was less than 2 hours long, but not by much. When I looked at the "Status" section, I had used 3.8 of the available 4.0GB for video.
But the bottom-line is that I am very happy that the project is complete, and I continue to be amazed at the high quality movies and DVD's I am able to create with the iLIFE programs.
Now that this crisis is over, what is your opinion of iLIFE '05? Should I take the plunge and load it up, or keep working with programs that I am happy with? I must admit that I would love to have access to the new "THEMES" in iDVD, but as you can plainly see, I am simply not computer saavy enough to handle any of the new problems that I have read so much about in the iMovieHD, and iDVD5 discussion groups.
Thanks again,
Lincoln

  • ITunes 5 - The application has unexpectedly quit.

I kept getting "The application has unexpectedly quit" message when trying to launch iTunes 5. If I logged out and logged back in again, then I could open it, but I'm not gonna do that everytime I want to launch iTunes.
Anyway, I had 2 Scripts in the Library/iTunes/Scripts folder under my user folder, (i.e. Dan/Library/iTunes/Scripts). When I removed the scripts from the folder, iTunes launched without crashing.
Then, to try to determine if that was the cause of the problem, I quit iTunes, put the scripts back in the folder, tried to launch iTunes again, and got the application has unexpectedly quit" message again.
So, I've taken the scripts out of the folder, and it's working again. Then, I noticed that there used to be a little Script icon in the menu bar, but now it's not there. Maybe Apple doesn't want the scripting option there.

I think the problem may be memory. 64mbs of ram with osx is apparently not enough. But any other ideas would still be appreciated. I'll get back once I get more ram in.

Does anyone know this issue? and what can i do about it?
    I really appreciate any help,

    Hi Hugo
    1. Do You have upgraded QuickTime to v.7 if not don't, else downgrade to
        6.5.2
    2. Do You have enough free space on Your hard disk eg 20Gb recommended
    3. Do You start Your projects from within iMovie with the function
Share/Export to iDVD. I don't. I use the ref. movie in the project
folder/icon and close iMovie so that only iDVD is running
    4. Do You do other thing during DVD-processing. Don't.

  • My iPhoto is not working, it quit unexpecly and it shows this message- The application "iPhoto" unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again?

i can't open my iPhoto, it was working very slow and now its not working at all, when i try to open it it shows this message: The application “iPhoto” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again?
how can i fix this problem?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • The application 'Finder' unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.

Hello All.  I solicit your help and advice please.
When I started up on my Macbook Pro (v10.7.5) this morning the Finder icon was flashing along with a flashing message that states "Restore Windows.  The application 'Finder' unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again?"  This has never happened before.
Unfortunately, when I try to select "Restore Windows", it will not respond and keeps flashing.  I shut down and tryed a restart but the same thing has happened and I have now lost my Desktop icons and screensaver.  Can anyone help me?  Thanks very much!
    <Re-Titled By Host>

Hello Brody, and Thank you for responding.
I have been on the phone with Apple Support for awhile and they cannot completely diagnose the problem after many attempts at deleting plist files, etc.  This one has them scratching their heads a bit (I must say they have been Excellent with their time and effort).
We have reesatblished "Finder" operationally and I have been able to restore and access most files but the problem was resident on the Deskstop I may have to visit the "Genius Desk" for follow-up as necessary.
I much appreciate your response and am very glad for the Community.  Thank you again.

  • "The application sed unexpectedly quit"

I keep getting a "The application sed unexpectedly quit" message. Sometimes it's there waiting for me when I quit an app like Photoshop or Final Cut, sometimes it appears after the machine has been idle for a long time. I've run all the diagnostic software I can think of, replaced a pair of RAM sticks after one turned up bad, reinstalled the last combo update, etc. And otherwise, the machine seems to run pretty normally. I've had more crashes in the last month or so than in the previous 5 or 6 years. This also roughly coincides with the 10.4.11 update, but not necessarily from the exact day that I ran the update. I'm no Mac virgin, I've been on the platform since the mid 80's, but also don't mess around with much command line stuff... so the Unix underbelly is pretty foreign to me. Anyone have any insight on a) what sed is, and b) why it crashes?
    Thanks.

I appreciate everyone's investigative help! It's been driving me mad. Whatever it is, it apparently restarts itself after crashing. I get the message, send the report to Apple (a few dozen times so far), and then without rebooting, it eventually pops up again. There doesn't seem to be any loss of functionality that I can trace to it, although all kinds of things have been goofy since the 10.4.11 update. It happens whether there's an application running or not, so I'm assuming it's related to the system itself.

  • Compressor 4 crashes on opening keep getting this warning: The application "Compressor" unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again? Tried Restoring windows. It crashes again.  Tried not = Same r

Compressor 4 crashes on opening keep getting this warning: The application “Compressor” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again? Tried Restoring windows. It crashes again.  Tried not = Same result.  This is the first time I've actually used the app although I purchased it back in April (I think).  I had my first longform project completed in FCPX and tried sending it to Compressor 4 and got this result over and over again.

    Steve,
Sorry to say I've not had any success in getting Compressor 4 to work.  I've tried every suggestion mentioned earlier on this topic to no avail.  Compressor 4 is dead in the water.  On the last two projects I had to go back to Compressor 3.x.xx to complete the projects.  The only hint that I have of wha may have happened concerns something I did early on.  When I bought this computer I decided to replace the hard drive with a larger one.  Since I already had my software up and working on the drive that came with the computer I decided to clone everything to the new larger drive.  As I recall, Compressor 4 worked on the original drive but it doesn't work on this cloned version.  So maybe there is a relationship there.  I haven't had a chance yet to reinstall my old drive and see if C 4 works on it.  If it does work then I know the source of the problem but not how to fix it on the new drive.  Did you do anything like cloning your drive recently too?  It's just a thought and may not lead anywhere but later this week when I catch a break I'll give the old drive a try and will post my results.
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • IDVD wont open. "Application has unexpectantly quit"

This is starting to **** me off. I'm trying to open up iDVD to burn a video. The message "The application iDVD has unexpectantly quit." How can it quit if it's not even open? Any ideas?

May I add to these discussions? I listened to all the hype of changing over to Leopard and am starting to regret falling for it. I have been with macs for many years with very few problems and have, indeed sung its praises, now we have Leopard!!! Prior to upgrading from 10.3 to 10.5 and subsequently 10.5.1, I backed up all my files onto a LaCie 500 ghz (Porsche) external drive.
To begin with my Speedtouch modem ceased to function,, now have a Netgear router, all is restored. 2nd I cannot burn cds or dvds. 3rd iDVD does not work. 4th my remote hard drive does not mount, just clicks away merrily but no icon.
Where do we go from here? Do I have to purchase the latest iLife? Is it coincidental that my remote hard drive doesn't function as it should? (it mounts onto my old fashioned imac G3 OS9!!)
Any answers would be most welcome.
    Cheers

  • Consistent "This Application has Unexpectedly Quit Messages"

I have a 15" Powerbook G4 800MHz with 1gb of RAM (I upgraded from 512 to 1gb a couple of years ago). Recently it has been quitting out of applications consistently. It started when I opened iTunes and was in the store trying to buy an album, everytime I got to the buy now screen it quits with the "Unexpectedly Quit" message. I thought it might be the actual iTunes program so I trashed the existing one and went to apple.com to download the new one. Again, when I got to the DOWNLOAD NOW button, it "Unexpectedly Quit" yet again. On all of these I have shutdown and restarted multiple times, shut down for the night and restarted the next evening, Repaired Disk Permissions, etc. What could be causing it to repeatedly quit? It basically renders the machine useless. I am quite a novice on the "fix it" side so assuming I don't know something is probably safe. I have been out here on this discussion forum looking for the topic that really covered my issue and I haven't found one. So I am posting this.
    thanks in advance!!

  • The application "LibreOffice" unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again?

This seems to be a wellknown problem but I have not been able to find a solution to it on the net. It is impossible to remove the program because it can not be shut down. I'm a new mac user, please help!

Any Mac program can be force quit. 1) if the application appears in the Dock, right click on its icon while holding the option key. 2) hold the option & command key while typing the escape key to get the force quit menu. 3) open the Activity Monitor and select the My Processes tab. Now look for your program by name and click on the force quit button in the top left corner.

  • Iphoto has unexpectedly quit.....!!??

    Hi everyone
Havent needed your help since the last time, but grateful for all your support.
I have to ask for some assistance on a small problem which has been driving me mad!
iPhoto starts up fine and allows me to view, shuffle, amend all the photos as normal, however when I plug in my digital camera and attempt to import photos, it looks like it is trying, says preparing to import but then quits and comes up with the message saying how the application has unexpectedly quit.
Have tried restart, closing all applications, switching off external hard drive etc. but so far have had no luck.
It also seems (off topic for this forum I know) that iDVD has followed the same suit now.
Both these applications have been running smoothly ever since they were installed over a year ago, but have noticed small problems starting to occur about a week ago.
    iPhoto version 5.0.4
    i DVD 5.0.1
Also if I decided to reinstall the application will I lose my photos currently sitting in the library? or is the computer smart enough to store them elsewhere?
Thanks in advance for your help, look forward to getting some helpful advice soon.
    Sincerely
    Brad

    Brad:
You might get more activity if you posted this in the iPhoto 5 forum. If it's a V5 issue you'll get more response there.

  • I have this message appearing "the application finder has unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows"... someone PLEASE help

I have this message appearing "the application finder has unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows"...
So far it doesn't appear to be effecting anything that i can see on my imac BUT it is incredibly annoying and popping up at bad times, and it all happened when my imac automatically updated itself. So annoying. PLEASE help!!!

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem.
