Unresponsive apps can be frustrating. After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning app issues:
OS X Mavericks: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
There are several solutions to try.
If the app is frozen, force quit the app. Press Option-Command (⌘)-Esc, select the app, then click Force Quit.When you force an app to quit, you may lose unsaved changes.
If the app quit, reopen it by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears.
Restart your Mac.Methods for starting up your Mac
Read the app’s documentation to check if it’s compatible with your version of OS X.
Open another file in the app. There may be a problem with the original file.
Check for updates to your software.Keep your Mac up to date

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If you can't make a backup, you only way to get data is to:
- Restore from an existing backup
- A data recovery company

Maximum Project Versions = 5
In the Adobe Premiere Elements AutoSave Folder were:
My new video project-1.prel (first and the oldest)
My new video project-2.prel
My new video project-3.prel
My new video project-4.prel
My new video project-5.prel (last and the newest)
I am OK with the first 5 with the maximum project versions = 5, but.....
Since I have set for only 5 versions, where do the subsequent versions go every 1 minute since you continue to
see only the above file names in the Adobe Premiere Elements AutoSave Folder.
My new video project-1.prel
is now the 6th AutoSave and replaces the original first AutoSave.
My new video project-2 prel
is now the 7th AutoSave and replaces the original second Auto Save.
Since I did 7 AutoSaves, this is the last and the newest.
My new video project-3.prel is still the original third AutoSave.
My new video project-4.prel is still the original fourth AutoSave.
My new video project-5.prel is still the original fifth AutoSave.
So, after the generation of the 10 th AutoSave, all the original 5 AutoSave would be gone,
and the My new video project-5.prel would then again become the last and the newest)
As for the question about

Yes, but review the Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks for the locations of the scratch disc. If same as
project, then those scratch disc will end up in the folder with the AutoSave which has become your project.prel.
A battery failure was at the core of this situation. So you should be OK moving forward.

Several files within a folder on my son's iMac have become unopenable. The error message is...

Here are some details...
1) The suspect files represent approximately half a folder's worth of files.
2) If I list files alphabetically within the folder, the suspect files occupy a contiguous block within the directory (halfway through the m's to the z's).
3) The files all report zero KB size and a Date Modified as 1 January 1970, 01:37.
I have tried the following, but to no avail...
1) Attempt to fix permissions.
2) Attempt to accessing the suscpect files my placing the computer into Target Disk mode and attempt to access from another mac.
3) Play about with the application Onyx (I read somewhere this may help)
4) Attempt to duplicate the files.
5) Attempt remote access from a networked computer.
6) Attempt access as admin and root user.
The computer is an iMac G3 DV 400MHz running 10.4.10.
I would be grateful for any advice on how to access these files.

You might be able to open those files in, say, TextEdit or Terminal, but what is the point? If they are of zero size they aren't going to be bristling with information!
I suggest it would be more fruitful to try to identify what is putting those files there. Which folder is involved? Just that folder, or others as well?
Just a wild guess, to be ignored if not appropriate, but has anything from Adobe been installed recently? Is the folder by any chance ~/Library/Preferences? Are all the file names human readable, in which case does your son recognise the names as connected with anything he created or has been working on, or are the names gobbledegook? Please copy and paste here a couple of samples of the file names. What does Finder 'Get Info' show as the extension? and the "Open with:"?

MP3 files being used by MAC OS X and cannot be opened?

I'm setting up my play lists in ITunes 7.0.2 on my Macbook and I started realizing a few songs where missing. The MP3 files are in my music folder but do not show up in ITunes. When I click on the in the music directory it gives me the following message in a pop up.

I recopied the bad files from my network backup drive and all seems well but I still don't understand why The system told me it was using the files.

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

I feel as though I am forced into repairing the iphone before I can backup the information (photos, videos, contacts). If the apple ID on the device is the same as the one on my iMac I do not understand why I have to unlock the iphone by typing in the 4 digit passcode. This is a little ******** as having the screen break seems to be the usual prpblem with the iphone, I want to be able to backup my files when I feel the obvious need to do so (eg. when it breaks)! Okay folkes, you were right and I was wrong.. I admit it. But I was pretty mad though when I tryed to backup the last few contacts I needed for work and couldn't do so. Worst things are when something gets broken (by me or whatever) when there is an emergency. I needed the contacts off of that phone real fast and couldn't do it, thats what got me real mad. And btw I am a Russian living in Moscow and instead of having an official Apple store we have shopes called ReStore who resell apple devices with ridiculous prices, same thing with the repairs. Yes that what I mean, after the phone has been turned off all night, when I turn it back on the morning the wifi will not turn on by itself. Eventually by turning off and on the main phone switch and the wifi in settings it sometimes come back on! Then I'm ok for the rest of the day even when I leave the house and come back it's ok. Only first thing in the morning, strange that it doesn't wake up like it use too.
