The application Safari can't be opened -1712

Has anyone seen this error message when trying to open the Safari application?
The application Safari can't be opened.
-1712
Thank you

Thanks Carolyn!
Force Quitting within Activity Monitor is a quick and efficient way to handle most Applications "Not Responding" or seeming not to open with error -1712.
It can also work great for an Application that "Freezes" and is giving the spinning beach ball
Just be aware that you may lose any unsaved work by force quitting an application.

  • Just installed os x maverick and updated my version of pages now when I try to open a document stored in pages format from old version get message "The Application "pages" can't be opened -1712  What is wrong?

Just updated to new version of pages.  Now can not open stored documents created under al pages.  Get message "the application pages can' be opened -1712"  hat do I do?

Apple released Pages 5.0 to run on Maverics only. They completely rewrote the program for Maverics and 64 bit compatibility. They failed to explain that this version is missing much of the previous version's capability and that it cannot read older Pages files. When they install it they leave the older Pages 4.3 in place because it is the only way to read the older Pages files and upgrade them to a level that can be read by Pages 5!
If you still have Pages 4.3 on your computer it will tell you what to do. If you do not then go into your backups and retrieve it.
Because of the deficiences of Pages 5 I have removed it from my Mac and gone back to working with Pages 4.3. I have also removed Pages 2 from my iPad and found Pages 1.7 in the Time Machinew backups and brought it forward and droped it onto the iTunes icon to restore it and then synced the iPad to get the Pages 1.7 running again - it is compatible with Pages 4.3 on the Mac so all is back to normal for me.
Apple say that they will fix many of the deficiences in Pages 5 in the next six months. I suggest you wait until then and keep an eye on these communities beforte considering the "upgrade".
Incedentaly Pages 5.0 writes files that cannot be read by anything else including Pages 4.3 - better hope no one sends you one! It does not save RTF either - what where they thinking!

  • How to correct "The application "Safari" can't be opened."

When I try to open Safari, I get this message and then, there is the -600.

    A couple of things.
First off, does this issue persist in another user?
IF THE ISSUE IS SYSTEM WIDE
If the issue DOES persist in another user:
Note: It's okay to use the guest user to test to see if the Safari issue is user specific or system wide, however, the troubleshooting should be performed in a new admin account.
    First, lets check your plug-ins.
To do this, open Finder, hold down command+shift+g, and a "go to the folder" dialogue box appears. Copy paste:
    /library/internet plug-ins
Create a new folder on the desktop, and put any 3rd party add-ons into this.
Restart the computer and try again.
If the issue persists, we may want to look into startup items. To do this, Open Finder, hold down command+shift+g, and a "go to the folder" dialogue box appears. Copy paste:
    /library/startupitems
If you have anything here, do the same as we did for the plug-ins, new folder on the desktop, put them there, restart, try again.
If that still doesn't resolve the issue, it may be that Safari itself is broke and needs reinstalled. To do that, we'd need to reinstall the OS (archive & install would work fine).
IF THE ISSUE IS USER SPECIFIC:
If the issue DOESN'T persist in another user, we have a few things to check.
First thing I would do is dump the Safari .plist, caches, and saved application state. To do this, open Finder, hold down command+shift+g, copy and paste in:
    ~/library/preferences
From here, locate com.apple.safari.plist and drag it into the trash. Immediatly after, hold down command+option+g and copy/paste in:
    ~/library
Locate your caches folder, drag & drop it into the trash. It will ask for your admin password.
Now, launch Safari with the left shift key held down. Does it still crash?
If yes, I would check user-level plug-ins. To do this, open that "go to the window" menu and copy/paste:
    ~/library/internet plug-ins
Do the same as for the system level plug ins. New desktop folder, drag/drop them on in.
    If the issue still persists...
Login items. Open system preferences, go to users and groups, then choose "login items." If you have stuff in here, disable them.
    Restart, try again.

    Hello,
I've already search in forum for this problem, however, I couldn't find an answer.
I've tried the option in the terminal typing: /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder &
But could only use finder while terminal was open, and I can't shut down or restart my iMac.

Force a shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Then reboot and test.

  • When I try to open 'numbers' on my mac air it says the application "numbers" can't be opened - 1712

    How can I fix this?

    Zulu,
Quit (by any means necessary) Numbers.
Move the Numbers preference file from here:
    /Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
replace <your user name> with your user name.
to go to the folder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder..." and enter the path:
"/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/" then locate and move the file:
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    To the Desktop:
    Now Launch Numbers

  • MacBook Pro The application "Preview" can't be opened. -1712

    Hello community,
    My MacBook Pro
    Processor 2.4 GHz
    Memory 4 GB
Storage capacity 19.31 GB free out of 249.2 GB
    OS X.9.4
The application "Preview" can't be opened. -1712
I have gone on line to look up possible fixes.
    1. I did: Go to Applications: Utilities: Disk Utility and ran: Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions. Both fine.
    2. I did: Finder: Go: Library: Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist and deleted that file. I tried to relaunch preview and it is still not working.

Try deleting the com.apple.preview folder from the Containers folder in your /Home/Library.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Error message "the application APPLICATION_NAME can't be opened. -10810"

All of a sudden I started getting the error message "the application APPLICATION_NAME can't be opened. -10810" whenever I attempt to open an application. Sometimes all of the applications will work, but then all of a sudden one or two applications will turn unresponsive and I will get the above message whenever I attempt to open any application. Does anyone know what this error might be, and how I might go about fixing it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
